USC PAM: Conversation@PAM: Collection Highlight- Pacific Art

Celebrate the USC Pacific Asia Museum’s 50th anniversary by exploring its permanent collection in-depth with unique talks and lectures presented by the museum’s curator, docents, and scholars.

Join Dr. Nancy Lutkehaus, USC professor, as she examines the art of the Pacific Islands in our permanent collection. Her conversation will highlight masks and statues from Papua New Guinea as well as the magnificently decorated sailing canoes from the Trobriand Islands.

More about the Speaker:

Nancy Lutkehaus is Professor of Anthropology in the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences and co-director of the USC Center for Visual Anthropology. Her research focuses on the cultures of the Pacific Islands with an emphasis on the people and arts of the Sepik region of Papua New Guinea. She is currently working on a book about the Michael C. Rockefeller Wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the history of the display of the arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas. Her recent article about the artist Miguel Covarrubias appears in the Anales del Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas.
