Sibylline Records

In “New in the Village,” we invite you to explore the stories behind Playhouse Village‘s emerging small businesses, celebrating the entrepreneurial spirit that continues to shape the character of our neighborhood. Allow us to introduce you to Sibylline Records, a haven for the eclectic world of record collecting and a space designed for artists to commune and engage in conversations about music. Located at 15 S El Molino Ave, this vibrant establishment joins a stacked block that includes the Tony Award-winning Pasadena Playhouse, Bar Chelou, and Monopole by Wine RX. Sibylline Records is eager to activate the community with a hip music scene, featuring special events, DJs, live music, and poetry nights. We got the opportunity to speak with owners Shane Butler and Caity Shaffer about music, life, and of course Pasadena.

What story or message do you want to convey to the visitors of Playhouse Village about your business?

Sibylline Records is an artist-owned and operated record shop that offers a curated selection of records, including international releases, rare original pressings, and experimental, and new music. We have records for everyone, and our motto is ‘music for all sorts’ because we have a bit of everything! It’s important to us that customers feel at home in our store. We love it when folks ask us for recommendations or explore new sounds at our listening stations. As musicians, affordability is also a top priority for us, so we try our best not to overprice. More than anything, we strive to be a community hub in this increasingly fractured, digital world.

Tell us about your unique products or services that set your business apart.

We carry hard-to-find original pressings, international records from around the world (Nigeria, Ghana, India, Brazil, Mexico, etc.), and current music from smaller-run independent labels. We also carry local artists from the community, and will be hosting events in our shop this upcoming year; namely poetry readings, listening parties, and acoustic performances.

How do you believe you will contribute to the community in Playhouse Village?

Sibylline now occupies a space that was once a beloved coffee spot called Zona Rosa, and our customers have fond memories of hanging out there. Like Zona Rosa, we hope to establish ourselves as a place where folks can spend an afternoon exploring new music, meeting music lovers, and engaging in meaningful conversations; a respite for all. We think Pasadena has an incredible arts scene, and we’re grateful to be part of it!

We look forward to the positive impact your business will have on our community. Learn more about Sibylline Records from our Playhouse Village business directory. And, thanks for shopping locally!
