SUMMARY:Vroman's: Janeane Bernstein discusses Better Humans
DESCRIPTION:When a global pandemic exacerbated a pre-existing mental health crisis\, the US was left with a mental health pandemic. This opened a Pandora’s box revealing what was long denied–we must prioritize mental health in all aspects of society\, eliminate disparities and stigma\, and become better humans. \nThe world was turned upside down in March 2020 by a virus no one expected to turn into a global pandemic. While millions experienced loss and disruption of life\, the pandemic put lives on pause\, making the nation turn inward to question the life Americans were living pre-pandemic and examine who and what really mattered in this time of financial\, emotional\, and interpersonal upheaval. Depression\, anxiety\, violence\, substance abuse\, and mental health illnesses soared in what became a mental health pandemic. Children lost parents\, millions lost jobs\, and thousands of teachers and health and wellness professionals abandoned their fields. \nThis has been a tremendous time of reflection on how to be better to ourselves\, and to humanity as a whole. What can we learn from this global disruption and how can we become better humans? To start\, we can’t look away anymore. The suffering is vast\, and the stakes are high. The voices of the pandemic have insightful lessons to teach each and every one of us. It’s time to silence our distractions\, listen\, and create transformative\, sustainable strategies that prioritize the health and well-being of humanity.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Yunte Huang in conversation with Paula Yoo\, discusses Daughter of the Dragon
DESCRIPTION:Born into the steam and starch of a Chinese laundry\, Anna May Wong (1905-1961) emerged from turn-of-the-century Los Angeles to become Old Hollywood’s most famous Chinese American actress\, a screen siren who captivated global audiences and signed her publicity photos–with a touch of defiance–“Orientally yours.” Now\, more than a century after her birth\, Yunte Huang narrates Wong’s tragic life story\, retracing her journey from Chinatown to silent-era Hollywood\, and from Weimar Berlin to decadent\, prewar Shanghai\, and capturing American television in its infancy. As Huang shows\, Wong’s rendezvous with history features a remarkable parade of characters\, including a smitten Walter Benjamin and (an equally smitten) Marlene Dietrich. Challenging the parodically racist perceptions of Wong as a “Dragon Lady\,” “Madame Butterfly\,” or “China Doll\,” Huang’s biography becomes a truly resonant work of history that reflects the raging anti-Chinese xenophobia\, unabashed sexism\, and ageism toward women that defined both Hollywood and America in Wong’s all-too-brief fifty-six years on earth.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Alex Brown\, in conversation with Justine Pucella Winans\, discusses 'Damned If You Do'
DESCRIPTION:Queer Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Filipino folklore in this horror comedy about a high school stage manager who accidentally sells her soul to a demon. \nSeven years ago\, Cordelia Scott’s abusive father left without a word\, and life has been normal ever since. The seventeen-year-old spends her days stage managing the school play (which is going great\, if anyone asks)\, pining over her best friend\, Veronica\, and failing one too many pop quizzes. \nShe’s never been sad that her father left\, but she knows something is…missing. When her school guidance counselor\, Fred\, reveals during a session that he’s actually a demon\, she learns that something is indeed missing: a piece of her actual soul. Why? She unwittingly made a deal with him to make her father disappear – then bargained to have the memory erased. To make matters worse\, Fred is here to make another bargain: Help him with a “little” demonic problem\, or she’s doomed to spend eternity in Hell with her father.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Thomas Vozzo discusses the Homeboy Way: A Radical approach to Business and Life
DESCRIPTION:Leading with heart\, authenticity and purpose\, Thomas Vozzo provides a clear path to a new bottom line–including 55 rules to break–bringing the Homeboy Way to life as the perfect anecdote to the massive tidal currents of social injustice and inequities. \nBy every traditional measurement of success\, Vozzo was a clear winner. In his world of billion-dollar revenues and million-dollar profits\, he knew exactly what shareholders wanted and how to get it for them. \nThen\, through a series of fateful events\, Vozzo landed as CEO of Homeboy Industries\, the most successful gang intervention\, rehabilitation\, and re-entry program in the country\, founded by Jesuit priest Greg Boyle. “I arrived at Homeboy at a time when I needed to learn more about myself and my life’s journey\,” Vozzo writes. “And after 8 years of working with the poor\, forgotten\, and demonized people of our society\, I’ve come to learn that I didn’t really know as much about life as I thought.” \nVozzo’s enlightening journey leads to his recognition that a radical approach is needed in business and in life: “What Homeboy has taught me is that we need to do business differently . . . . We need to bust up the system\, swim upstream\, avoid herd mentality.” \nBlending personal stories of his day-to-day with Fr. Greg and the Homies along with counterintuitive business ideas that are changing lives for the better\, Vozzo shows you how you can live\, lead\, and shake things up with toughness\, determination\, compassion\, and grit. \nThat’s the Homeboy Way.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Special Storytime featuring Mirelle Ortega\, in conversation with Danielle Davis\, presenting River of Mariposas
DESCRIPTION:From the author of Magic: Once Upon a Faraway Land comes a story of imagination and the determination of a child to bring back the butterflies–even if she has to make them herself \nCan you imagine a time when the land and the sky belonged to the mariposas? SUMMARY:Vroman's: Andrew Leland\, in conversation with Rachel Khong\, discusses the Country of the Blind
DESCRIPTION:We meet Andrew Leland as he’s suspended in the liminal state of the soon-to-be blind: he’s midway through his life with retinitis pigmentosa\, a condition that ushers those who live with it from sightedness to blindness over years\, even decades. He grew up with full vision\, but starting in his teenage years\, his sight began to degrade from the outside in\, such that he now sees the world as if through a narrow tube. Soon–but without knowing exactly when–he will likely have no vision left. \nFull of apprehension but also dogged curiosity\, Leland embarks on a sweeping exploration of the state of being that awaits him: not only the physical experience of blindness but also its language\, politics\, and customs. He negotiates his changing relationships with his wife and son\, and with his own sense of self\, as he moves from his mainstream\, “typical” life to one with a disability. Part memoir\, part historical and cultural investigation\, The Country of the Blind represents Leland’s determination not to merely survive this transition but to grow from it–to seek out and revel in that which makes blindness enlightening. \nThought-provoking and brimming with warmth and humor\, The Country of the Blind is a deeply personal and intellectually exhilarating tour of a way of being that most of us have never paused to consider–and from which we have much to learn. SUMMARY:Vroman's: Spencer Quinn discuss Mrs. Plansky's revenge
DESCRIPTION:Mrs. Loretta Plansky\, a recent widow in her seventies\, is settling into retirement in Florida while dealing with her 98-year-old father and fielding requests for money from her beloved children and grandchildren. Thankfully\, her new hip hasn’t changed her killer tennis game one bit. \nOne night Mrs. Plansky is startled awake by a phone call from a voice claiming to be her grandson Will\, who desperately needs ten thousand dollars to get out of a jam. Of course\, Loretta obliges–after all\, what are grandmothers for\, even grandmothers who still haven’t gotten a simple “thank you” for a gift sent weeks ago. Not that she’s counting. \nBy morning\, Mrs. Plansky has lost everything. Law enforcement announces that Loretta’s life savings have vanished\, and that it’s hopeless to find the scammers behind the heist. First humiliated\, then furious\, Loretta Plansky refuses to be just another victim. \nIn a courageous bid for justice\, Mrs. Plansky follows her only clue on a whirlwind adventure to a small village in Romania to get her money and her dignity back–and perhaps find a new lease on life\, too.

SUMMARY:Vroman’s: Dr. Aomawa Shields discusses Life on Other Planets
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Aomawa Shields discusses Life on Other Planets: A Memoir of Finding My Place in the Universe \nA stunning and inspiring memoir charting a life as an astronomer\, classically-trained actor\, mother\, and Black woman in STEM\, searching for life in the universe while building a meaningful life here on Earth \nAs a kid\, Aomawa Shields was always bumping into things\, her neck craned up at the sky\, dreaming of becoming an astronaut. A year into an astrophysics PhD program\, plagued by self-doubt and discouraged by a white male professor who suggested that she–a young Black woman who also loved fashion\, makeup\, and the arts–didn’t belong\, she left astronomy and pursued acting professionally for a decade\, before a day job working for NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope drew her back to the stars. She was the oldest and the only Black student in her PhD cohort. This time\, no professor\, and no voice in her own head\, would stop her. Now an astronomer and astrobiologist at the top of her field\, Dr. Shields studies the universe outside our Solar System\, researching and uncovering the planets circling distant stars with just the right conditions that could support life–while also using her theater education to communicate the wonder and magic of the universe with those of us here on Earth. But it’s been a journey as winding and complex as the physics she has mastered. \nLife on Other Planets is a journey of discovery on this world and on others\, a story of creating a life that makes space for joy\, love\, and wonder while being driven by one of our biggest questions: Is anybody else out there? It is about the possibility of living between multiple worlds and not choosing–but instead charting a new path entirely. SUMMARY:Vroman’s: Bruce Borgos discusses The Bitter Past
DESCRIPTION:Bruce Borgos discusses The Bitter Past: A Mystery \nIn the tradition of Craig Johnson and C. J. Box\, Bruce Borgos’s The Bitter Past begins a compelling series set in the high desert of Nevada featuring Sheriff Porter Beck. \nPorter Beck is the sheriff in the high desert of Nevada\, north of Las Vegas. Born and raised there\, he left to join the Army\, where he worked in Intelligence\, deep in the shadows in far off places. Now he’s back home\, doing the same lawman’s job his father once did\, before his father started to develop dementia. All is relatively quiet in this corner of the world\, until an old\, retired FBI agent is found killed. He was brutally tortured before he was killed and clues at the scene point to a mystery dating back to the early days of the nuclear age. If that wasn’t strange enough\, a current FBI agent shows up to help Beck’s investigation. \nIn a case that unfolds in the past (the 1950s) and the present\, it seems that a Russian spy infiltrated the nuclear testing site and now someone is looking for that long-ago\, all-but forgotten person\, who holds the key to what happened then and to the deadly goings on now. SUMMARY:Vroman’s: Sonali Kolhatkar discusses Rising Up
DESCRIPTION:Sonali Kolhatkar discusses Rising Up: The Power of Narrative in Pursuing Racial Justice \nRising Up offers a timely exploration of how truthful narratives by and about people of color can be used to advance social justice in the United States. \nWhile people of color are fast becoming the majority population in the United States\, the perspectives of white America still dominate the vast majority of the media created and consumed every day. Media makers of color\, long shut out of the decision-making process\, are rising up to advance a set of different narratives\, offering stories and perspectives to counter the racism and disinformation that have long dominated America’s political and cultural landscape. \nIn Rising Up\, award-winning journalist Sonali Kolhatkar delivers a guide to racial justice narrative-setting. With a focus on shifting perspectives in news media\, entertainment\, and individual discourse\, she highlights the writers\, creators\, educators\, and influencers who are successfully building a culture of affirmation and inclusion. \n“Sonali Kolhatkar reminds us we are the stories we tell. Our stories can cast a spell of hate\, division\, and fear\, or they can break the powerful grip of racial injustices that have held us since our country’s beginning. With personal and collective wisdom\, Kolhatkar guides us in the storytelling that liberates.”–Luis J. Rodríguez\, author of Always Running: La Vida Loco/Gang Days in L.A. \nPurchase your book at Vroman’s Bookstore or online at vromansbookstore.com.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Brando Skyhorse\, in conversation with Jaime Paglia\, discusses 'My Name Is Iris'
DESCRIPTION:  \nIris Prince is starting over. After years of drifting apart\, she and her husband are going through a surprisingly drama-free divorce. She’s moved to a new house in a new neighborhood and has plans for gardening\, coffee clubs\, and spending more time with her nine-year-old daughter Melanie. It feels like her life is finally exactly what she wants it to be. \nThen\, one beautiful morning\, she looks outside her kitchen window–and sees that a wall has appeared in her front yard overnight. Where did it come from? What does it mean? And why does it seem to keep growing? \nMeanwhile\, a Silicon Valley startup has launched a high-tech wrist wearable called “the Band.” Pitched as a convenient\, eco-friendly tool to help track local utilities and replace driver’s licenses and IDs\, the Band is available only to those who can prove parental citizenship. Suddenly\, Iris\, a proud second-generation Mexican American\, is now of “unverifiable origin\,” unable to prove who she is\, or where she\, and her undocumented loved ones\, belong. Amid a climate of fear and hate-fueled violence\, Iris must confront how far she’ll go to protect what matters to her most. \nMy Name Is Iris is an all-too-possible story about family\, intolerance\, and hope\, offering a brilliant and timely look at one woman’s journey to discover who she can’t–and can–be. SUMMARY:Vroman’s: Chang Sheng presents Oldman Part 3
DESCRIPTION:Chang Sheng\, in conversation with Wan-Chun Alex Ma\, presents Oldman Part 3 \nA beautiful queen rules her country with an iron fist. Unmarried and without an heir\, she adopts orphans as a way to prove that even commoners can reign as kings. Yet\, as the years progress\, she shows no sign of aging. Only one man knows the dark secret to her eternal youth: Oldman\, a bearded magician the queen has locked in her darkest dungeon. One night\, Oldman steps through the bars of his prison and disappears before the queen’s very eyes. Enraged\, she sends her army after him in a desperate campaign to keep her secret hidden. \nStaging his escape\, Oldman appears to step through the bars of his cell and vanish as if by magic\, cleverly misleading the guards. He rescues a neighboring prisoner\, an outlaw sword maiden who has had her arms and legs amputated. Upon taking her to a brilliant doctor who fits her with mechanical limbs\, Oldman and the sword maiden vow to take revenge on the queen that wronged them\, all the while evading the queen’s army as she launches a desperate campaign to keep her secret hidden. \nThe story continues as Oldman and his companions have escaped the palace after a failed peace negotiation\, but they’re being pursued by the full force of the queen’s army. The queen no longer treats Oldman’s resistance lightly; her orders for her soldiers are to capture his companions dead or alive… and send Oldman straight to her to face the queen’s wrath. (Eigomanga) \nHaving read comics from a young age\, Chang Sheng has always preferred science fiction stories best. He admits to having been deeply influenced by the work of Yukinobu Hoshino\, and his training in drawing and oil painting while studying at the Fu-Hsin Trade and Arts School is likewise reflected in his exquisitely detailed and extremely realistic video game-like style. Chang Sheng has represented Taiwan at the Angoulême International Comics Festival three times and has won several prizes overseas. Oldman was a finalist in the 2013 International Manga Award in Japan. \nModerator Wan-Chun Alex Ma is Academy Sci-Tech Award Recipient in 2019. His work on facial performance capture contributed to many recent motion pictures\, including the Hobbit trilogy\, Iron Man 3\, the reboot Planet of the Apes series. \n  \nPurchase your book at Vroman’s Bookstore or online at vromansbookstore.com.
