SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Simone Gorrindo discusses The Wives: A Memoir
DESCRIPTION:When her new husband joins an elite Army unit\, Simone Gorrindo is uprooted from New York City and dropped into Columbus\, Georgia–a town so foreign she might as well have landed on the moon. With her husband frequently deployed\, Simone is left to find her place in this new world\, alone–until she meets the wives. \nGorrindo gives us an intimate look into the inner lives of a remarkable group of women and a tender\, unflinching portrait of a marriage. A love story\, an unforgettable coming-of-age tale\, and a bracing tour of the intractable divisions that plague our country today\, The Wives offers a rare and powerful gift: a hopeful stitch in the fabric of a torn America.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Darcie Little Badger discusses Sheine Lende
DESCRIPTION:Shane works with her mother and their ghost dogs\, tracking down missing persons even when their families can’t afford to pay. Their own family was displaced from their traditional home years ago following a devastating flood – and the loss of Shane’s father and her grandparents. They don’t think they’ll ever get their home back. \nThen Shane’s mother and a local boy go missing\, after a strange interaction with a fairy ring. Shane\, her brother\, her friends\, and her lone\, surviving grandparent – who isn’t to be trusted – set off on the road to find them. But they may not be anywhere in this world – or this place in time. \nNevertheless\, Shane is going to find them. \nDarcie Little Badger’s Elatsoe launched her career and in the years since has become a beloved favorite. This prequel to Elatsoe\, centered on Ellie’s grandmother\, deepens and expands Darcie’s one-of-a-kind world and introduces us to another cast of characters that will wend their way around readers’ hearts.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Matt Strassler discusses Waves in an Impossible Sea
DESCRIPTION:In Waves in an Impossible Sea\, physicist Matt Strassler tells a startling tale of elementary particles\, human experience\, and empty space. He begins with a simple mystery of motion. When we drive at highway speeds with the windows down\, the wind beats against our faces. Yet our planet hurtles through the cosmos at 150 miles per second\, and we feel nothing of it. How can our voyage be so tranquil when\, as Einstein discovered\, matter warps space\, and space deflects matter? \nThe answer\, Strassler reveals\, is that empty space is a sea\, albeit a paradoxically strange one. Much like water and air\, it ripples in various ways\, and we ourselves\, made from its ripples\, can move through space as effortlessly as waves crossing an ocean. Deftly weaving together daily experience and fundamental physics–the musical universe\, the enigmatic quantum\, cosmic fields\, and the Higgs boson–Strassler shows us how all things\, familiar and unfamiliar\, emerge from what seems like nothing at all.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Yulin Kuang\, in conversation with Candice Lim\, discusses How to End a Love Story
DESCRIPTION:Helen Zhang hasn’t seen Grant Shepard once in the thirteen years since the tragic accident that bound their lives together forever. \nNow a bestselling author\, Helen pours everything into her career. She’s even scored a coveted spot in the writers’ room of the TV adaptation of her popular young adult novels\, and if she can hide her imposter syndrome and overcome her writer’s block\, surely the rest of her life will fall into place too. LA is the fresh start she needs. After all\, no one knows her there. Except… \nGrant has done everything in his power to move on from the past\, including building a life across the country. And while the panic attacks have never quite gone away\, he’s well liked around town as a screenwriter. He knows he shouldn’t have taken the job on Helen’s show\, but it will open doors to developing his own projects that he just can’t pass up. \nGrant’s exactly as Helen remembers him–charming\, funny\, popular\, and lovable in ways that she’s never been. And Helen’s exactly as Grant remembers too–brilliant\, beautiful\, closed off. But working together is messy\, and electrifying\, and Helen’s parents\, who have never forgiven Grant\, have no idea he’s in the picture at all. \nWhen secrets come to light\, they must reckon with the fact that theirs was never meant to be any kind of love story. And yet… the key to making peace with their past–and themselves–might just lie in holding on to each other in the present. (Avon Books) \nCandice Lim is the co-host of ICYMI\, Slate’s podcast about internet culture. She comes to Slate from NPR\, where she was an assistant producer and occasional panelist on Pop Culture Happy Hour. She graduated from Boston University and hails from Orange County\, California.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: A Group Poetry event featuring Senator Anthony Portantino\, Linda Ravenswood\, and Brian Sonia Wallace
DESCRIPTION:Political instability\, poverty\, climate change\, and the insatiable appetite for cheap labor all fuel clandestine movement across borders. As those borders harden\, the demand for smugglers who aid migrants across them increases every year. Yet the real lives and work of smugglers–or coyotes\, or guides\, as they are often known by the migrants who hire their services–are only ever reported on from a distance\, using tired tropes and stereotypes\, often depicted as boogie men and violent warlords. In an effort to better understand this essential yet extralegal billion dollar global industry\, internationally recognized anthropologist and expert Jason De León embedded with a group of smugglers moving migrants across Mexico over the course of seven years. \nThe result of this unique and extraordinary access is SOLDIERS AND KINGS: the first ever in-depth\, character-driven look at human smuggling. It is a heart-wrenching and intimate narrative that revolves around the life and death of one coyote who falls in love and tries to leave smuggling behind. In a powerful\, original voice\, De León expertly chronicles the lives of low-level foot soldiers breaking into the smuggling game\, and morally conflicted gang leaders who oversee rag-tag crews of guides and informants along the migrant trail. SOLDIERS AND KINGS is not only a ground-breaking up-close glimpse of a difficult-to-access world\, it is a masterpiece of narrative nonfiction.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Lian Dolan discusses The Marriage Sabbatical
DESCRIPTION:After twenty-three years of building careers and raising kids together\, Jason and Nicole Elswick are ready for a break from their daily lives. Jason has spent years planning his dream sabbatical–ditching work for a nine-month-long motorcycle trip through South America. The problem is\, that’s Jason’s dream\, not Nicole’s. After years of working retail and parenting in Portland\, Nicole craves the sun of the Southwest and the artistic community in Santa Fe\, where she wants to learn jewelry design. \nA chance encounter at a dinner party presents a surprising–and intriguing–way out of their dilemma. Over a little too much wine\, Jason and Nicole’s married neighbors sing the praises of the 500 Mile Rule: their policy of enjoying themselves however they wish–and with whomever they wish–when they’re temporarily far apart. It seems like the perfect solution: nine months pursuing their own adventures–with a bit of don’t-ask-don’t-tell–and then a return to their shared lives. It’ll be a sabbatical from their marriage as well as their day jobs. \nAs Jason bikes his way across a continent and Nicole reclaims the art she’s long neglected\, they discover the pleasures and pitfalls of the 500 Mile Rule\, confronting temptations of all kinds\, uncomfortable truths about themselves\, and gaining new perspectives on their partnership.\nBut all sabbaticals come to an end…then what?

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Nicholas George\, in conversation with Cody Sisco\, discusses A Deadly Walk in Devon
DESCRIPTION:After a long career as a detective in San Diego\, Rick “Chase” Chasen has traded in his badge for a change of scenery in the coastal comforts of Devon\, England\, until a local murder takes him on a deadly detour. \nStill grieving the death of his long-time partner\, Chase reunites with his dear friend and fellow Anglophile Billie Mondreau for a seacoast holiday of historic sightseeing. Assigned a pair of guides from the tour company Wanderers\, Chase and Billie join seven other like-minded Americans looking forward to an English getaway. All except for Ronald Gretz. The wealthy entrepreneur behind the international Golden Sunset nursing home chain doesn’t like anything about walking\, touring\, or England. Coarse and opinionated\, Gretz’s complaints get on the nerves of his fellow Wanderers–and his long-suffering trophy wife. \nBut Gretz’s gripes are tied to his own nerves being frayed. He has been receiving threatening texts and emails signed “An Avenger.” Convinced someone means him harm\, Gretz asks Chase to watch his back. Soon\, Gretz falls afoul of several “accidents\,” leading to more friction with the other walkers. Until one final “accident” results in Gretz dead at the bottom of a cliff. \nChase\, whose investigative instincts remain sharp\, knows Gretz’s death was no accident. While helping the police investigate\, he discovers that members of the tour group not only disliked the victim but had legitimate motives for wanting him dead. Now\, he just has to uncover who among them is willing to kill.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Katie Gee Salisbury discusses Not Your China Doll
DESCRIPTION:Set against the glittering backdrop of Los Angeles during the gin-soaked Jazz Age and the rise of Hollywood\, this debut book celebrates Anna May Wong\, the first Asian American movie star\, to bring an unsung heroine to light and reclaim her place in cinema history. \nBefore Constance Wu\, Sandra Oh\, Awkwafina\, or Lucy Liu\, there was Anna May Wong. In her time\, she was a legendary beauty\, witty conversationalist\, and fashion icon. Plucked from her family’s laundry business in Los Angeles\, Anna May Wong rose to stardom in Douglas Fairbanks’s blockbuster The Thief of Bagdad. Fans and the press clamored to see more of this unlikely actress\, but when Hollywood repeatedly cast her in stereotypical roles\, she headed abroad in protest. \nAnna May starred in acclaimed films in Berlin\, Paris\, and London. She dazzled royalty and heads of state across several nations\, leaving trails of suitors in her wake. She returned to challenge Hollywood at its own game by speaking out about the industry’s blatant racism. SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Jonna Mendez discusses In True Face: A Woman's Life in the Cia\, Unmasked
DESCRIPTION:Jonna Hiestand Mendez began her CIA career as a “contract wife” performing secretarial duties for the CIA as a convenience to her husband\, a young officer stationed in Europe. She needed his permission to open a bank account or shut off the gas to their apartment. Yet Mendez had a talent for espionage\, too\, and she soon took on bigger and more significant roles at the Agency. She parlayed her interest in photography into an operational role overseas\, an unlikely area for a woman in the CIA. Often underestimated\, occasionally undermined\, she lived under cover and served tours of duty all over the globe\, rising first to become an international spy and ultimately to Chief of Disguise at CIA’s Office of Technical Service. \nIn True Face recounts not only the drama of Mendez’s high-stakes work–how this savvy operator parlayed her “everywoman” appeal into incredible subterfuge–but also the grit and good fortune it took for her to navigate a misogynistic world. This is the story of an incredible spy career and what it took to achieve it.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Daniel Lewis discusses Twelve Trees: The Deep Roots of our Future
DESCRIPTION:A compelling global exploration of nature and survival as seen via a dozen species of trees that represent the challenges facing our planet\, and the ways that scientists are working urgently to save our forests and our future. \nThe world today is undergoing the most rapid environmental transformation in human history–from climate change to deforestation. Scientists\, ethnobotanists\, indigenous peoples\, and collectives of all kinds are closely studying trees and their biology to understand how and why trees function individually and collectively in the ways they do. In Twelve Trees\, Daniel Lewis\, curator and historian at one of the world’s most renowned research libraries\, travels the world to learn about these trees in their habitats. \nLewis takes us on a sweeping journey to plant breeding labs\, botanical gardens\, research facilities\, deep inside museum collections\, to the tops of tall trees\, underwater\, and around the Earth\, journeying into the deserts of the American west and the deep jungles of Peru\, to offer a globe-spanning perspective on the crucial impact trees have on our entire planet. When a once-common tree goes extinct in the wild but survives in a botanical garden\, what happens next? How can scientists reconstruct lost genomes and habitats? How does a tree store thousands of gallons of water\, or offer up perfectly preserved insects from millions of years ago\, or root itself in muddy swamps and remain standing? How does a 5\,000-year-old tree manage to live\, and what can we learn from it? And how can science account for the survival of one species at the expense of others? To study the science of trees is to study not just the present\, but the story of the world\, its past\, and its future.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Caroline Frost\, in conversation with Amy Nicholson\, discusses The Last Verse
DESCRIPTION:When aspiring musician Twyla Finch arrives in Nashville\, Tennessee\, in 1977\, the nineteen-year-old Texan is dazzled by the fringe-and-rhinestones country music scene. Live music flows from bars\, open mic nights tempt with the chance of stardom\, and record label execs seek the next hot new act. As Twyla finds her way in this vibrant town\, she soon falls for Chet Wilton\, country music hopeful and son of blue-blooded Nashvillians. When a night out with Chet goes terribly wrong\, Twyla finds herself involved in a shocking crime. Hoping to process what happened that fateful night\, she composes a haunting ballad that she performs only once in an empty bar. But weeks later\, when she turns on the radio\, she hears another woman singing her song. Twyla must decide: Should she claim her ballad and secure the fame she’s always wanted? Or stay quiet and avoid implicating herself in the terrible crime she’s desperate to put in the past? (William Morrow & Company) \nAmy Nicholson is a film critic in Los Angeles and host of the podcast “Unspooled.” Her credits include the New York Times\, LA Weekly\, Variety\, Rolling Stone\, MTV News\, and the Guardian. Her first book\, “Tom Cruise: Anatomy of an Actor\,” was published by Cahiers du Cinema\, and her second\, “Extra Girls\,” will be published by Simon & Schuster.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Cara Black discusses Murder at La Villette
DESCRIPTION:Parisian private investigator Aimée Leduc doesn’t know that her life is about to be upended. Her ex\, Melac\, has been hounding her to move their daughter\, Chloé\, to Brittany. Aimée is fed up with his threats to take her to court and has stopped answering his calls. She doesn’t know he’s waiting for her by the Bassin de la Villette as she leaves a client’s office late one night. When she finds him there\, bleeding in the canal\, he has just been stabbed by an assailant\, who knocks Aimée unconscious and plants the bloody knife in her hands. \nNow Aimée is in police custody\, debilitated by a concussion\, with overwhelming evidence pointing to her as Melac’s killer. She must figure out who murdered Melac–not an easy job\, given the target on his back as a former homicide investigator. Cut off from her typical network and forced to operate under multiple layers of cover\, Aimée must go deep into the underbelly of Paris’s 19th arrondissement\, where she rubs shoulders with biker gangs\, paranoid journalists\, grieving parents\, and frustratingly tight-lipped ex-cops on her hunt for justice.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Jeffrey Siger discusses At Any Cost
DESCRIPTION:Chief Inspector Kaldis is initially dismayed to be asked to investigate a series of suspicious forest fires that took place last summer. In Greece\, forest fires are an inevitability\, and he fears he and his team are being set up to take the political blame for this year’s blazes. \nHe quickly becomes suspicious\, though\, that the forests were torched for profit – and for a project on a far grander scale than the usual low-level business corruption. There are whispers on the wind that shadowy foreign powers intend to establish a surreptitious mega-internet presence on the island of Syros\, with the intent to weaponize the digital world to their own dark ends. \nCan Kaldis and his team stop the hostile foreign takeover of the idyllic island – or will the rise of the metaverse set not just Greece\, but the whole world\, on fire?

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Kate Anthony discusses The D Word
DESCRIPTION:From the host of the critically acclaimed The Divorce Survival Guide Podcast comes a book that provides the clarity\, peace\, and answers women need to make empowered decisions about their marriages\, break unhealthy patterns\, and build the life they truly want. \nEvery year\, close to a million women struggle to decide whether to divorce their partners. Some are in relationships they know to be unsalvageable\, yet they’re terrified that divorce will hurt their kids. Others feel guilt-ridden and confused over their unhappiness with a spouse who seems\, to the outside world at least\, to be perfectly fine. And then there are those in between\, restless and aware of problems that may or may not be fixable\, with no idea how to tell the difference. \nThe D Word is the definitive yet accessible guide for everyone who wants to take control of their lives\, either by ending or repairing their marriage. Written in Kate Anthony’s signature straight-talking\, empowering style\, The D Word is more than a practical handbook for those considering divorce. It also reveals how cultural and societal influences negatively affect our relationships and expectations\, stacking the odds against women.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Phillip B. Williams discusses Ours
DESCRIPTION:In this ingenious\, sweeping novel\, Phillip B. Williams introduces us to an enigmatic woman named Saint\, a fearsome conjuror who\, in the 1830s\, annihilates plantations all over Arkansas to rescue the people enslaved there. She brings those she has freed to a haven of her own creation: a town just north of St. Louis\, magically concealed from outsiders\, named Ours. \nIt is in this miraculous place that Saint’s grand experiment–a truly secluded community where her people may flourish–takes root. But although Saint does her best to protect the inhabitants of Ours\, over time\, her conjuring and memories begin to betray her\, leaving the town vulnerable to intrusions by newcomers with powers of their own. As the cracks in Saint’s creation are exposed\, some begin to wonder whether the community’s safety might be yet another form of bondage. \nSet over the course of four decades and steeped in a rich tradition of American literature informed by Black surrealism\, mythology\, and spirituality\, Ours is a stunning exploration of the possibilities and limitations of love and freedom by a writer of capacious vision and talent.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Cory Doctorow discusses The Bezzle: A Martin Hench Novel
DESCRIPTION:The year is 2006. Martin Hench is at the top of his game as a self-employed forensic accountant\, a veteran of the long guerrilla war between people who want to hide money\, and people who want to find it. He spends his downtime on Catalina Island\, where scenic\, imported bison wander the bluffs and frozen\, reheated fast food burgers cost 25$. Wait\, what? When Marty disrupts a seemingly innocuous scheme during a vacation on Catalina Island\, he has no idea he’s kicked off a chain of events that will overtake the next decade of his life. \nMartin has made his most dangerous mistake yet: trespassed into the playgrounds of the ultra-wealthy and spoiled their fun. To them\, money is a tool\, a game\, and a way to keep score\, and they’ve found their newest mark–California’s Department of Corrections. Secure in the knowledge that they’re living behind far too many firewalls of shell companies and investors ever to be identified\, they are interested not in the lives they ruin\, but only in how much money they can extract from the government and the hundreds of thousands of prisoners they have at their mercy. \nA seething rebuke of the privatized prison system that delves deeply into the arcane and baroque financial chicanery involved in the 2008 financial crash\, The Bezzle is a sizzling follow-up to Red Team Blues.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Alex Michaelides discusses The Fury
DESCRIPTION:A masterfully paced thriller about a reclusive ex–movie star and her famous friends whose spontaneous trip to a private Greek island is upended by a murder — from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Silent Patient. \nThis is a tale of murder. \nOr maybe that’s not quite true. At its heart\, it’s a love story\, isn’t it? \nLana Farrar is a reclusive ex–movie star and one of the most famous women in the world. Every year\, she invites her closest friends to escape the English weather and spend Easter on her idyllic private Greek island. \nI tell you this because you may think you know this story. You probably read about it at the time ― it caused a real stir in the tabloids if you remember. It had all the necessary ingredients for a press sensation: a celebrity; a private island cut off by the wind…and a murder.\nWe found ourselves trapped there overnight. Our old friendships concealed hatred and a desire for revenge. What followed was a game of cat and mouse ― a battle of wits\, full of twists and turns\, building to an unforgettable climax. The night ended in violence and death\, as one of us was found murdered. \nBut who am I? \nMy name is Elliot Chase\, and I’m going to tell you a story unlike any you’ve ever heard. (Celadon Books) \nAlex Michaelides was born and raised in Cyprus. He has an M.A. in English Literature from Trinity College\, Cambridge University\, and an M.A. in Screenwriting from the American Film Institute in Los Angeles. The Silent Patient was his first novel\, debuting at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list\, and has sold more than 6.5 million copies worldwide. The rights have been sold in a record-breaking 51 countries\, and the book has been optioned for film by Plan B. His second novel\, The Maidens\, was an instant New York Times bestseller and has been optioned for television by Miramax Television and Stone Village. \nThis is a ticketed in-store event. Tickets include one seat/entry and one copy of The Fury which will be handed out at check-in. A book signing will follow the conversation.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Laurie R. King discusses The Lantern’s Dance
DESCRIPTION:Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes\, hoping for a respite in the French countryside\, are instead caught up in a case that turns both bewildering and intensely personal. \nAfter their recent adventures in Transylvania\, Russell and Holmes look forward to spending time with Holmes’ son\, the famous artist Damian Adler\, and his family. But when they arrive at Damian’s house\, they discover that the Adlers have fled from a mysterious threat. \nHolmes rushes after Damian while Russell\, slowed down by a recent injury\, stays behind to search the empty house. In Damian’s studio\, she discovers four crates packed with memorabilia related to Holmes’ granduncle\, the artist Horace Vernet. It’s an odd mix of treasures and clutter\, including a tarnished silver lamp with a rotating shade: an antique yet sophisticated form of zoetrope\, fitted with strips of paper whose images dance with the lantern’s spin. \nIn the same crate is an old journal written in a nearly impenetrable code. Intrigued\, Russell sets about deciphering the intricate cryptograph\, slowly realizing that each entry is built around an image–the first of which is a child\, bundled into a carriage by an abductor\, watching her mother recede from view. \nRussell is troubled\, then entranced\, but each entry she decodes brings more questions. Who is the young Indian woman who created this elaborate puzzle? What does she have to do with Damian\, or the Vernets–or the threat hovering over the house? \nThe secrets of the past appear to be reaching into the present. And it seems increasingly urgent that Russell figure out how the journal and lantern are related to Damian–and possibly to Sherlock Holmes himself.
