SUMMARY:Pasadena Heritage: Explore Historic Architecture in the Playhouse Village
DESCRIPTION:The Pasadena Playhouse Historic District includes approximately 34 buildings that tell the story of Pasadena’s eastward growth in the 1920s and 1930s\, as the city shifted from its agricultural roots into a center of tourism\, culture\, and design. This period of development brought a mix of architectural styles that still define the district today\, most notably Art Deco\, Spanish Colonial Revival\, and Mediterranean Revival. \nThis walking tour takes a closer look at how these styles came together during a moment of real growth and change in Pasadena. Along the way\, we’ll stop at landmarks like the Scottish Rite Cathedral\, the United Artists Theatre\, and the Warner Building\, along with other buildings that reflect the energy and optimism of the period. \nJoin Pasadena Heritage as they explore how architecture and development shaped this district\, looking at both the original vision for the area and how it continues to evolve today.

SUMMARY:Pasadena Heritge: Historic Preservation: Then & Now
DESCRIPTION:Pasadena Heritage invites the community to mark the start of National Historic Preservation Month with a reflection on the role preservation continues to play in shaping Pasadena. \nEstablished in 1977\, Pasadena Heritage was born during a critical turning point for the city. Ambitious redevelopment plans sought to revive the local economy\, but often at the expense of historic buildings\, established neighborhoods\, and the character of the original downtown. In response\, residents organized at the grassroots level\, advocating for preservation and ultimately helping to reshape Pasadena’s trajectory. \nToday\, those same tensions around growth\, density\, and identity are resurfacing with renewed urgency. As Pasadena Heritage approaches its 50th year\, this moment offers an opportunity to examine how past advocacy efforts shaped the city as it exists today—and what those lessons reveal about the challenges ahead. Preservation is not only about protecting buildings; it is about continuity\, collective memory\, and ensuring that the stories carried forward reflect the full diversity of the community\, including those that have historically been overlooked. \nThe events of the 1970s\, the emergence of a new vision for Pasadena\, and the evolving role of preservation today will be explored in a talk by Executive Director Dr. Bridget Lawlor on Monday\, May 4.

SUMMARY:Pasadena Heritage: The Museum of Me: Learning to Talk About Ourselves for Posterity
DESCRIPTION:Joshua Goode is a Professor of History who has also managed a museum studies program and has worked internationally with museums to contemplate how they tell their stories and to whom.  He will lead an exercise in all of us becoming the Curator and Director of the Museum of Me\, putting on a show about us. \nMuseums generally rely on objects to convey stories\, ideas\, knowledge\, a sense of culture and belonging\, and meaning.  Museums can tell collective stories of a people\, a nation\, a small group\, a family\, a time\, and a place.  Museums are also meant to hold collections and tell their stories in perpetuity\, to stand the test of time.  But they also have to think about the audience.  What do they know? How might they react?  Who is walking in the front door?  Who isn’t visiting?  So\, in this hands-on activity driven evening\, we are going to wear a lot of museum hats to talk about ourselves.  We are going to be curators\, thinking about how we present ourselves through objects.  We are going to be museum directors who want to make sure their audiences are served by the exhibition.  And\, we will be collections managers who want to know what objects are going to be used and make sure they don’t break! \n  \n

SUMMARY:Pasadena Heritage: Printing a Legacy: Arroyo Culture and the Rise of California Printmakers
DESCRIPTION:Pasadena Heritage is proud to host this year’s Dr. Robert Winter Memorial Lecture\, exploring the rise of printmaking in California at the dawn of the twentieth century. \nThe program will highlight how prints made art accessible to turn of the century homeowners\, and how the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco sparked a turning point for artists throughout the state. \nThe lecture presented by author and researcher Susan Futterman will feature a discussion of Pasadena artists Benjamin Brown\, Frances Gearhart\, and Harold Doolittle\, and their role in forming the Print Makers Society of California. Through an examination of the artists who inspired them\, their work\, and the organization they created\, the program will highlight the profound impact this group had in spreading printmaking throughout the Western United States and shaping California’s artistic legacy. \nThe lecture will be followed by a reception featuring Martinis (Dr. Robert Winter’s drink of choice) and an array of California casual style Hors d’oeuvres\, as well as an exhibition of original artwork of the period by Frances Gearhart\, Harold Doolittle\, and others to enjoy. \nA special keepsake will be available for in-person attendees\, graciously provided by Andre Chaves

SUMMARY:Pasadena Heritage: 200 Years of Black Pioneers in Pasadena and Los Angeles
DESCRIPTION:Pasadena Heritage happily presents 200 Years of Black Pioneers in Pasadena and Los Angeles\, \nMany don’t realize just how deep the roots of the African American community run in Southern California. This talk brings those stories to the forefront\, exploring the lives and legacies of pioneering Black individuals and communities whose impact shaped Los Angeles and Pasadena from the very beginning. \nWe’ll look at: \n\nThe Pobladores\, the original 1781 settlers of the Pueblo of Los Angeles — more than half of whom had African ancestry.\nPío Pico\, the last Mexican governor of California\, of African and mestizo heritage.\nBiddy Mason\, a midwife who went from newly freed slave to one of the largest commercial landowners in Los Angeles within just two decades.\nPaul R. Williams\, the first licensed African American architect west of the Mississippi\, who designed more than a thousand buildings across Southern California.\nJackie Robinson\, who excelled in four sports at John Muir High School\, Pasadena City College\, and UCLA before breaking Major League Baseball’s color barrier.\nTom Bradley\, Los Angeles’s first African American mayor\, who led the city for two decades\, from 1973 to 1993.\nThis hybrid program will be presented by Dave Nufer\, Pasadena Heritage docent and Board member\, and Steven McCall\, docent and recent Board Chair of the Los Angeles Conservancy.

SUMMARY:Pasadena Heritage: Women's Work: The Art and Craft of Weaving in Rural Morocco
DESCRIPTION:Morocco is a country known for the intricacy and breadth of its craftsmanship. While men produce many of the country’s artisanal goods\, rug weaving has\, for centuries\, been the domain of women. Across Morocco’s tribal regions\, distinct weaving styles reflect local histories\, outside influences\, and the aesthetics of the Amaizgh\, indigenous weavers. As stewards of cultural knowledge\, these artisans hold a respected place within their communities. \nThis lecture examines the history of weaving in rural Morocco\, tracing the transformation of the woven rug from a domestic practice to a global commodity. It concludes by considering the most significant changes that have shaped the Moroccan rug weaving industry over the past two decades.
