SUMMARY:Pasadena Heritage: Historic Preservation: Then & Now
DESCRIPTION:Founded in 1977\, Pasadena Heritage emerged at a pivotal moment for the city. Efforts to revive a struggling local economy brought sweeping redevelopment plans that threatened historic buildings\, neighborhoods\, and the character of the original downtown. In response\, residents organized at the grassroots level\, advocating for a more thoughtful approach and ultimately helping to redefine Pasadena’s future. \nToday\, similar questions around growth\, density\, and identity have reemerged\, carrying even greater urgency. As Pasadena Heritage approaches its 50th anniversary\, this moment offers an opportunity to reflect on how past advocacy shaped the city as it exists today—and what those lessons reveal about the path forward. Preservation extends beyond protecting structures; it centers on continuity\, collective memory\, and ensuring that the stories carried forward reflect the full breadth of the community\, including those historically underrepresented. \nThese themes—what unfolded in the 1970s\, how a new vision took hold\, and what preservation means for Pasadena today—will be explored in a talk led by Executive Director Dr. Bridget Lawlor on Monday\, May 4.

SUMMARY:Pasadena Heritage: The Living Spirit of the Arts & Crafts Movement
DESCRIPTION:Pasadena Heritage presents an exploration of the Arts & Crafts movement through the work of Julie Leidel\, a Roycroft Master Artisan and founder of The Bungalow Craft. This talk considers the movement not only as a historical moment\, but as a living philosophy still unfolding today. Beginning with the legacy of Roycroft and Elbert Hubbard—tracing its ideals\, influence\, and enduring spirit—Leidel reflects on her own path as a Roycroft Artisan within this lineage. \nThe presentation also delves into a quieter dimension of the Arts & Crafts movement: the often-unspoken thread of symbolism and inner resonance found in historical works. Through her own body of work\, Leidel illustrates how these principles continue to evolve\, offering a contemporary harmony within the Arts & Crafts tradition and inviting audiences to experience art not just as something seen\, but something felt and remembered.

SUMMARY:Pasadena Heritage: Botanical Blueprints: The Pioneering Heritage of Anna Atkins
DESCRIPTION:Pasadena Heritage invites the public to step back into the Victorian era for a hands-on exploration of the “blueprints of nature.” This immersive heritage workshop celebrates the groundbreaking work of Anna Atkins (1799–1871)\, the English botanist and photographer who transformed scientific documentation through art and innovation. Atkins produced the first book illustrated entirely with photographs\, Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions (1843)\, using a revolutionary cameraless printing process that continues to captivate audiences today. \nWhat Participants Will Experience\nThe HistoryGuests will discover how Atkins used the cyanotype process—developed in 1842 by her family friend Sir John Herschel—to carefully document delicate botanical specimens such as ferns and algae. Her work beautifully bridged science\, art\, and early photography. \nThe ScienceThe workshop explores the chemistry behind the iconic “sun print.” Paper treated with iron salts reacts to ultraviolet light\, producing the rich Prussian blue tones that define cyanotypes. This elegant process reveals the powerful intersection of natural light and scientific discovery. \nThe CraftParticipants will create their own botanical cyanotype using locally gathered plant materials. By arranging specimens on light-sensitive paper and harnessing the power of sunlight\, each guest will produce an archival-quality print to take home—experiencing the timeless practice of preserving nature through handmade heritage\, just as Atkins did nearly two centuries ago. \nIdeal for artists\, nature lovers\, history enthusiasts\, and anyone curious about early photography\, this workshop offers a thoughtful opportunity to slow down\, observe closely\, and create something beautiful rooted in the past.

SUMMARY:Pasadena Heritage: Dr. Robert Winter Memorial Lecture and Reception
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, January 13\, 2024 | 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM\nLecture & Reception Tickets: $30 Members / $35 Nonmembers\nVirtual Lecture (Zoom) Tickets: $15 Members / $20 Nonmembers / (Students are free) \nPasadena Heritage presents Dr. Robert Winter Memorial Lecture and Reception with feature speaker\, Ted Ellison\, who will delight guests with his illustrated talk\, From Hand to Hearth: Glass Mosaic from the Prairie School. \nFine craftsman and designer Ted Ellison brings a historical perspective to the introduction of mosaics to the buildings of progressive American architects around the turn of the twentieth century. The Chicago firm Giannini & Hilgart is among those whose works of art stand among the highest achievements of this ancient art form\, yet they remain nearly forgotten in homes across the country. In collaboration with the celebrated architects of their day\, Giannini & Hilgart approached the language of mosaic with fresh experiments in material and decorative design\, exemplified by their installations at the historic Blinn House (the headquarters of Pasadena Heritage). In light of his study of leaded glass and mosaic fireplaces nationwide\, Ted will also share his observations on the decorative furnishings of this Pasadena landmark. This lecture is a rare chance to view exquisitely photographed interiors and newly discovered installations from around the country. \nYou are invited to join us in person or virtually for this special program! The lecture will be livestreamed via Zoom and a recording will be made available to ticket holders shortly after the event. Free admission to the Zoom lecture will be made available to students upon request. Current students may email Kristen Norton at knorton@pasadenaheritage.org to receive the Zoom connection info. \nFor those joining us in person\, we will host a cocktail reception following the lecture to toast the late Dr. Robert Winter. Martinis (Dr. Winter’s cocktail of choice) and light hors d’oeuvres will be served from 5:00 to 6:30 PM. \nABOUT OUR SPEAKER \nTed Ellison\, founder of Theodore Ellison Designs\, studied art and apprenticed in a glass studio before starting his leaded glass and mosaic company in 1998. Honoring the artistic integrity of the Arts & Crafts tradition he’s created original glass\, mosaic and lighting designs for homes all over the country. His work is based on the firm belief that thoughtfully designed and carefully crafted artworks enhance the lives of those who encounter them. His work has appeared in Fine Homebuilding\, Style 1900 and Old House Journal. He’s written on the history of glass for American Bungalow and presented on the history of American mosaic at the National Arts & Crafts Conference in Asheville\, Historic Seattle\, The Gamble House\, and Chicago’s Driehaus Museum. \nDR. ROBERT WINTER \nDr. Robert Winter was a gift to us and to the cause of historic preservation nationwide – his teaching\, writing\, critical eye and witty commentary still influence what we do and how we look at historic places. He led the way in creating Pasadena’s preservation ordinance and commission and supported us\, educated us and urged us to be a strong voice for the architectural legacy that surrounds us. The first Dr. Robert Winter Memorial Lecture was held during Craftsman Weekend in 2019 after his passing\, and is a lasting tribute to his impact on historic preservation communities both near and far. He would be thrilled to know that Pasadena Heritage now resides in the historic Blinn House designed by Chicago architect George Washington Maher. Celebrate with us as we learn about the stunning mosaic fireplace in the Dr. Robert Winter Lounge of the Blinn House (shown above). \nDonations in support of the program are very welcome. All those who donate to the Dr. Robert Winter lecture will receive a link to view the recording of this year’s Dr. Robert Winter Memorial Lecture.
