SUMMARY:Vroman's: Friends In Deed Pasadena present Katherine Seligman discusses At the Edge of the Haight
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Please register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/10cqtgvm \nMaddy Donaldo\, homeless at twenty\, has made a family of sorts in the dangerous spaces of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. She knows whom to trust\, where to eat\, when to move locations\, and how to take care of her dog. It’s the only home she has. When she unwittingly witnesses the murder of a young homeless boy and is seen by the perpetrator\, her relatively stable life is upended. Suddenly\, everyone from the police to the dead boys’ parents want to talk to Maddy about what she saw. As adults pressure her to give up her secrets and reunite with her own family before she meets a similar fate\, Maddy must decide whether she wants to stay lost or be found. Against the backdrop of a radically changing San Francisco\, a city which embraces a booming tech economy while struggling to maintain its culture of tolerance\, At the Edge of the Haight follows the lives of those who depend on makeshift homes and communities. \nAs judge Hillary Jordan says\, “This book pulled me deep into a world I knew little about\, bringing the struggles of its young\, homeless inhabitants–the kind of people we avoid eye contact with on the street–to vivid\, poignant life. The novel demands that you take a close look. If you knew\, could you still ignore\, fear\, or condemn them? And knowing\, how can you ever forget?” (Algonquin Books) \nKatherine Seligman is a journalist and author in San Francisco. As a reporter\, she’s focused on social issues\, from homelessness\, mental health and end of life issues to the city’s boom and bust cycles. But she’s also written about everything else\, from self-appointed graffiti curators\, urban coyotes and embryonic sex selection to what her kids learned growing up in Haight Ashbury. She has been a staff writer at the San Francisco Chronicle Magazine and a reporter for the San Francisco Examiner and USA Today. Her stories have appeared in Redbook\, Life\, Time\, California Magazine\, PBS Next Avenue\, CALmatters\, Al Jazeera America\, and the anthology “Fresh Takes.” She is a member of the San Francisco Writers’ Grotto and loves working in clay. \nHillary Jordan is the author of the novels Mudbound (2008) and When She Woke (2011)\, as well as the digital short “Aftermirth.” Her stories have been translated into 15 languages. When she’s not scribbling away\, Hillary teaches the occasional writing workshop and gives talks at colleges\, literary festivals\, and community libraries. She has a BA from Wellesley College and an MFA in Creative Writing from Columbia University. She grew up in Dallas\, TX and Muskogee\, OK and currently lives in Brooklyn\, along with half the writers in America. \nFriends in Deed is an interfaith organization that provides supportive services to meet basic human needs\, so our homeless and at-risk neighbors can rebuild their lives. “Celebrating more than 120 years of service\, we meet the needs of our clients by leveraging our small\, but dedicated staff\, with many volunteers. Friends In Deed meets people where they are\, without judgment or restrictions that deny people the help they need. We bring dignity to homelessness and poverty. Our staff’s smiling faces and helping hands ensure that individuals in need are safe and fed and find a vision of hope for their futures.” Find out more about Friends in Deed on their website.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Andromeda Romano-Lax discusses Annie and the Wolves
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Please register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/bqz5fige \nRuth McClintock is obsessed with Annie Oakley. For nearly a decade\, she has been studying the legendary sharpshooter\, convinced that a scarring childhood event was the impetus for her crusade to arm every woman in America. This search has cost Ruth her doctorate\, a book deal\, and her fiancé–but finally it has borne fruit. She has managed to hunt down what may be a journal of Oakley’s midlife struggles\, including secret visits to a psychoanalyst and the desire for vengeance against the “Wolves\,” or those who have wronged her. \nWith the help of Reece\, a tech-savvy senior at the local high school\, Ruth attempts to establish the journal’s provenance\, but she’s begun to have jarring out-of-body episodes parallel to Annie’s own lived experiences. As she solves Annie’s mysteries\, Ruth confronts her own truths\, including the link between her teenage sister’s suicide and an impending tragedy in her Minnesota town that Ruth can still prevent. (Soho Press) \nAndromeda Romano-Lax was born in Chicago and is now a resident of Vancouver Island\, Canada. She worked as a freelance journalist and travel writer before turning to fiction. Her first novel\, The Spanish Bow\, was translated into eleven languages and was chosen as a New York Times Editors’ Choice\, BookSense pick\, and one of Library Journal’s Best Books of the Year. Her novels reflect her diverse interest in the arts\, history\, science and technology\, as well as her love of travel and her time spent living abroad. Andromeda co-founded and continues to blog for 49 Writers\, a nonprofit organization. She has taught fiction in the University of Alaska Anchorage low-residency MFA in Creative Writing program and currently works with novelists and memoirists as a freelance book coach. \nGayle Brandeis is the author of The Book of Dead Birds\, the winner of Barbara Kingsolver’s Bellwether Prize\, an award in support of a literature of social change. Reviewers have highly praised this\, her first novel\, and Toni Morrison said: It has an edgy beauty that enhances perfectly the seriousness of its contents. She is also the author. SUMMARY:Vroman's: A Special Story Time with Michelle Garcia Andersen presenting The Owl Who Asks Why
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Please register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/bcnl789m \nLittle Owl and Little Wolf have so many questions for their parents. “Why can’t we move our eyes?” “When will I no longer be a pup?” But owls don’t ask “Why?” They ask “Whooo?” And wolves don’t ask “When?” They ask “Hoooow?” Mom and Dad say it’s silly to even consider asking those sorts of questions. \nFeeling teased and misunderstood\, Little Owl and Little Wolf decide to run away from home for good. After straying too far from the path\, the pair discovers that they’re lost in the forest and begin to wonder if they’ve made the right decision by leaving the pack. Little Owl and Little Wolf realize that the only way to make it back to their families is to not be afraid to ask the right questions\, their own way. \nThis heartwarming tale of friendship from author Michelle Garcia Andersen and artist Ayesha Rubio will remind young readers that by staying true to yourself and embracing what makes you unique\, good things come to you. (Page Street Kids) \nMichelle Garcia Andersen wrote this story after being inspired by the owls that live in the trees alongside her writing studio. She is delighted to be writing picture books for children; it has been a lifelong dream of hers. When she’s not reading and writing\, she enjoys hiking\, mountain biking\, kayaking\, walking her dogs\, gardening and anything else that gets her outdoors. Michelle and her husband have three teenage kids and live in a home full of laughter.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Jedidiah Jenkins in conversation with Nicole Richie
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event  ticketed event and will take place on Crowdcast. Tickets available below. \nThe New York Times bestselling author of To Shake the Sleeping Self delivers a moving reflection on the hidden\, sometimes difficult topics we must consider in order to live an authentic life–ego\, love\, family\, work–for anyone seeking a companion on the road to understanding. \nWe wake up atop the dirt of our childhoods with a shovel in our hands. In our pocket is a crumpled note with conspicuously familiar handwriting. It says\, “Good luck.” \nWe aren’t born into a self. It is created without our consent\, built out of our childhoods\, our circumstances\, and chance. But in the busyness of adult life\, we rarely have time to think clearly about the questions that matter most: Who am I? What am I made of? How much of how I act boils down to avoiding the things that make me feel small? We bury these questions\, but they drive our behavior far more than we give them credit for. They are our puppet masters. \nWriting with the passion and clarity that made his debut\, To Shake the Sleeping Self\, a national bestseller\, Jedidiah Jenkins brings together new and old writings to explore the eight themes all of us face as we find our way in life: ego\, family\, home\, friendship\, love\, work\, death\, the soul. \nAs he examines the experiences that shape us into who we are\, Jenkins leads readers in a wide-ranging conversation about finding fulfillment in the people and places around us and discovering the courage to show our deepest selves to the world. (Convergent Books) \nThis event ticket includes a hardcover copy of Like Streams to the Ocean\, mailed to you after the event\, as well as online access to the event for your household. You will receive a link and password to attend the Crowdcast event on the afternoon of Monday\, February 1st. \nPlease note: The shipping amount included in the ticket price is for domestic shipping only. There is an additional $17.00 charge required if shipping internationally.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Matt Coyle discusses Blind Vigil
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Please register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/zkw0xxxy \nA friend arrested for murder. A vicious killer lurking in the shadows. A world of darkness. \nBlinded by a gunshot wound to the face while working as a private investigator nine months ago\, Rick Cahill is now sure of only one thing: he has to start a new life and leave his old one behind. \nHe’s still trying to figure out what that life is when his onetime partner\, Moira MacFarlane\, asks for his help on a case she’s taken for Rick’s former best friend. The case is simple and Moira only needs Rick for one interview\, but Rick is wary of waking sleeping demons. \nUltimately\, he goes against his gut and takes the case which quickly turns deadly. Rick’s old compulsion of finding the truth no matter the cost–the same compulsion that cost him his eyesight and almost his life–battles against his desire to escape his past. \nThe stakes are raised when Rick’s friend is implicated in murder and needs his help. Can he help the friend he no longer trusts while questioning his own lessened capabilities? His life depends on the answer as a shadowy killer lurks in the darkness. (Oceanview Publishing) \nMatt Coyle is the award-winning author of the best-selling Rick Cahill crime novels. He knew he wanted to be a crime writer when he was fourteen and his father gave him the simple art of murder by Raymond Chandler. But his foray into crime fiction was delayed for thirty years as he spent time managing a restaurant\, selling golf clubs for various golf companies\, and in national sales for a sports licensing company. Matt lives in San Diego with his yellow Lab\, Angus\, where he is writing his eighth crime novel. \nEditor Gary Phillips is a critically acclaimed author of mystery and graphic novels (The Darker Mask\, Bangers\, Violent Spring). Raised in South Central Los Angeles\, Phillips draws on his experiences from anti-police abuse community organizing and anti-apartheid activism in his work. He was the chair of the Eleanor Taylor Bland Crime Fiction Writers of Color committee\, and was president of the Private Eye Writers of America.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Alexi Pappas in conversation with Tara Schuster\,
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Please register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/q9peqfci \nWhen “Renaissance runner” ( New York Times) Alexi Pappas–Olympic athlete\, actress\, filmmaker\, and writer–was four years old\, her mother died by suicide\, drastically altering the course of Pappas’s life and setting her on a search for female role models. When her father signed his bereaved daughter up for sports teams as a way to keep her busy\, female athletes became the first women Pappas looked up to\, and her Olympic dream was born. At the same time\, Pappas had big creative dreams\, too: She wanted to make movies\, write\, and act. Despite setbacks and hardships\, Pappas refused to pick just one lane. She put in a tremendous amount of hard work and wouldn’t let anything stand in her way until she achieved all of her dreams\, however unrelated they may seem to outsiders. In a single year\, 2016\, she made her Olympic debut as a distance runner and wrote\, directed\, and starred in her first feature film. \nBut great highs are often accompanied by deep lows; with joy comes sorrow. In Bravey\, Pappas fearlessly and honestly shares her battle with post-Olympic depression and describes how she emerged on the other side as a thriving and self-actualized woman. Unflinching\, exuberant\, and always entertaining\, Bravey showcases Pappas’s signature\, charming voice as she reflects upon the touchstone moments in her life and the lessons that have powered her career as both an athlete and an artist–foremost among them\, how to be brave. \nPappas’s experiences reveal how we can all overcome hardship\, befriend pain\, celebrate victory\, relish the loyalty found in teammates\, and claim joy. In short: how every one of us can become a bravey. (Dial Press) \nAlexi Pappas is an award-winning writer\, filmmaker\, and Olympic athlete. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times\, Runner’s World\, Women’s Running\, Sports Illustrated\, The Atlantic\, and Outside\, among other publications\, and she has been profiled in The New York Times\, Sports Illustrated\, New York\, and Rolling Stone. Pappas co-wrote\, co-directed\, and starred in the feature film Tracktown with Rachel Dratch and Andy Buckley. Most recently\, she co-wrote and starred alongside Nick Kroll in Olympic Dreams\, the first non-documentary-style movie to ever be filmed at the Olympic Games. A Greek American\, Pappas holds the Greek national record in the 10\,000-meters and competed for Greece in the 2016 Olympics. She lives in Los Angeles\, California. \nTara Schuster served as Vice President of Talent and Development at Comedy Central where she was the Executive in Charge of the Emmy® and Peabody Award-winning Key & Peele\, the Emmy® Award winning @Midnight\, and Lights Out with David Spade. For her work on Key & Peele\, Jordan Peele remarked that Schuster is “ahead of her time…she sees the future a little bit.” Her book\, Buy Yourself The F*cking Lilies\, debuted as the #1 New Release in Humor Essays and Self-Help on both Audible and Kindle. InStyle\, People Magazine\, Cosmopolitan\, Goodreads\, BuzzFeed\, Goop\, and many others have chosen Buy Yourself The F*cking Lilies as one of the best new books of 2020.
