SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Gian Sardar discusses When the World Goes Quiet
DESCRIPTION:In the final days of World War I\, an aspiring artist’s courageous journey is just beginning in a powerful novel about love\, danger\, and survival by the author of Take What You Can Carry. \nIt’s 1918 in German-occupied Bruges\, Belgium. With luck\, Evelien will make it to the end of the war and be given what she was promised: a prized painting in exchange for safeguarding her employer’s possessions. Until then\, Evelien knows to keep her head down and stay out of trouble. But life never goes to plan\, especially in war. \nA member of the Resistance approaches Evelien: steal a list of names hidden in her employer’s home. In return\, she’ll get a letter from her long-missing husband\, Emiel. She’d lost hope of Emiel’s survival\, but the promised letter puts her certainty of his death in question. Evelien begins her mission and soon forms a friendship with a soldier who is struggling with the devastating demands of battle. Their shared passion for art deepens the bond\, and Evelien faces a heart-wrenching truth: she longs for Emiel’s safe return…but not necessarily to her. \nAs the final days of the war loom closer\, Evelien has never been in more danger. And should she survive the war’s bitter end\, what choices will she make for a life beyond liberation?

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Soyoung Park discusses Snowglobe
DESCRIPTION:Enclosed under a vast dome\, Snowglobe is the last place on Earth that’s warm. Outside Snowglobe is a frozen wasteland\, and every day\, citizens face the icy world to get to their jobs at the power plant\, where they produce the energy Snowglobe needs. Their only solace comes in the form of twenty-four-hour television programming streamed directly from the domed city. \nThe residents of Snowglobe have everything: fame\, fortune\, and above all\, safety from the desolation outside their walls. In exchange\, their lives are broadcast to the less fortunate outside\, who watch eagerly\, hoping for the chance to one day become actors themselves. \nChobahm lives for the time she spends watching the shows produced inside Snowglobe. Her favorite? Goh Around\, starring Goh Haeri\, Snowglobe’s biggest star–and\, it turns out\, the key to getting Chobahm her dream life. \nBecause Haeri is dead\, and Chobahm has been chosen to take her place. Only\, life inside Snowglobe is nothing like what you see on television. Reality is a lie\, and truth seems to be forever out of reach. \nTranslated for the first time into English from the original Korean\, Snowglobe is a groundbreaking exploration of personal identity\, and the future of the world as we know it. It is the winner of the Changbi X Kakaopage Young Adult Novel Award. (Delacorte Press) \nDedicated to Expanding Knowledge of Korea\, the Korean Cultural Center is the axis of Korean heritage in Los Angeles. The Korean Cultural Center welcomes the general public to experience the rich traditions and history of Korea through specialized programs\, sponsored events\, and multiple learning resources. Operated by the Korean government’s Ministry of Culture\, Sports and Tourism\, the Korean Cultural Center is dedicated to providing insights into the rich cultural heritage of Korea. \nSoyoung Park majored in communication and media at university. She is a winner of the Original Story Award and the Changbi X Kakaopage Young Adult Novel Award. She is the author of the Snowglobe duology. \nJoungmin Lee Comfort is a Korean-English translator. Her translations have appeared in Clarkesworld Magazine and Best of World SF. Her recent cotranslation of Kim Bo-young’s On the Origin of Species and Other Stories was longlisted for the National Book Award for translated literature

SUMMARY:Boston Court Pasadena: Click\, Clack\, Moosic with Collective
DESCRIPTION:This delightful music programming for ages 3-7 is a live musical storytime event featuring the Click Clack Moo! book by Doreen Cronin set to original music by Helix Collective resident composer\, Phil Popham. Come meet musicians\, explore an instrument petting zoo\, and hear Click Clack Moo come to life! \nABOUT THE PROJECT \nAn educational concert featuring the Click Clack Moo! book set to original music by Helix Collective resident composer\, Phil Popham. This original musical work set to the popular book Click Clack Moo by Doreen Cronin was commissioned by the West Michigan Symphony. This popular concert for children (ages 3 – 7) has been performed by that symphony for ten years running with enormous success. \nHelix Collective will bring this delightful educational concert to children in the Pasadena area with a performance in the Spring of 2024. \nThis high-quality music programming for young children is a live musical-story time event. Children will meet musicians\, learn about basic music concepts\, interact with the narrator throughout the story and hear live music performed\, specifically written for the Click Clack Moosic program. \nThe program introduces one instrument from each instrument family (brass\, string\, piano\, percussion\, woodwind). Each character is represented by an instrument so the young audience can get to know each instrument through the character’s personality. Each character has a featured section to highlight what that instrument does best. This updated version of the classic programs like Peter and the Wolf covers more diverse styles of music including salza\, a ho down\, waltz\, and blues. \nThrough the story\, children learn about working together\, collective action\, and how one small voice can make a big difference. \n  \nPRE-CONCERT LEARNING PROGRAM \nOur primary goal with this first concert in the series is to engage young learners with an introduction to the instruments and learning about how music expresses emotion. The instrument petting zoo before the performance allows each child to see and touch instruments up close and interact with the musicians that make music through each instrument. \nAt the start of the program\, the narrator and conductor will lead the children through a series of exercises where they learn to recognize and name emotions through the tone of voice and word emphasis they hear. They then each get to try this themselves using their own voice. Then the program brings this concept to storytelling through music. \nWe will engage with young audiences in deep learning with the musical story. Young attendees will gain a firm understanding of the different instrument families and be able to recognize the nine instruments by ear. They will understand the role of the conductor and how different types of music express different moods and moments in the character’s journey. They will discover how music can be used to tell a story\, celebrate\, express emotions\, and bring people (or farm animals) together. \nABOUT THE KEY PROJECT PARTICIPANT  \nPhil Popham\, Music Director \nClick Clack Moosic Music Director Phil Popham is a co-founder of Helix Collective. He composed the music for and conducted the world premieres of his Click\, Clack\, Moosic children’s concerts with the West Michigan Symphony Orchestra. The four programs (Click Clack Moosic\, Giggle Giggle Quack\, Dooby Dooby Moo\, and Click\, Clack\, Ho! Ho! Ho!) include his original music accompanying the narration of the stories. \nHe has conducted the Los Angeles Live Score Film Festival for 8 years and has conducted the scores for over 30 films. Dr. Popham holds graduate degrees in both Composition and Performance with studies in Music Industry and Production Music from the University of Southern California and the Peabody Conservatory of Music. \nSarah Robinson\, Co-founder\, Administrator\, and Flutist \nSarah Robinson is the flutist and co-founder of Helix Collective.
She is the author of Clubbing for Classical Musicians\, a guide to presenting music in alternative venues which has been called “enlightening\, instructional\, and inspiring.” As a flutist she has recorded scores for television\, video games\, commercials\, and several albums. She holds degrees in flute performance from the Royal Northern College of Music (UK)\, the University of Illinois\, the University of South Carolina\, and the Chicago College of Performing Arts. Dr. Robinson has been a panelist and presenter at several conferences on the future of classical music including the 21CMPosium at DePauw University and “Are We Listening – a symposium on music\, change\, and challenge” at Boston University. Recent speaking engagements and workshops include visits to the Curtis Institute of Music and the Peabody Conservatory. \nDoreen Cronin\, Author \nDoreen Cronin is author of the Click Clack Moo which will be narrated during the Click Clack Moosic performance. Doreen Cronin is the author of the Click\, Clack series\, The Duck Squad Series\, the Bug Diaries\, and many more books for kids and middle graders. Nine of Cronin’s books are Junior Library Guild selections: Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type\, Diary of a Worm\, Diary of a Spider\, Diary of a Fly\, Smick\, Click\, Clack\, Quack to School\, Click\, Clack\, Peep\,  Click\, Clack\, Surprise\,  and Click\, Clack Rainy Day.  In 2015\, The Chicken Squad was named one of the best books of the year by Bank Street College of Education. \nKathryn Eames\, Piano \nHelix Collective core member and faculty at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music\, Kathryn Eames will serve as pianist for the Click Clack Moosic concerts. Dr. Kathryn Eames earned her DMA in Piano Performance at the University of Southern California and enjoys an active career in Los Angeles as a soloist\, collaborative pianist\, and orchestral keyboardist.  She has performed under the baton of conductors such as John Williams\, James Conlon\, David Newman\, Gerard Schwarz\, and Carl St. Clair. She is principal pianist for the L.A. Opera’s educational outreach series. Dr. Eames has been on the faculty of the Pasadena Conservatory of Music since 2014\, where she teaches piano and music theory. \nMatt Ordaz\, Percussionist \nMatt keeps a busy schedule performing as a freelance musician in many venues throughout Southern California\, including The Disneyland Resort and The Ahmanson Theatre. When not performing\, he is often recording in his home studio for clients worldwide. SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Daniel A. Olivas discusses Chicano Frankenstein
DESCRIPTION:An unnamed paralegal\, brought back to life through a controversial process\, maneuvers through a near-future world that both needs and resents him. As the United States president spouts anti-reanimation rhetoric and giant pharmaceutical companies rake in profits\, the man falls in love with lawyer Faustina Godínez. His world expands as he meets her network of family and friends\, setting him on a course to discover his first life history\, which the reanimation process erased. SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Cara Black discusses Murder at La Villette
DESCRIPTION:Parisian private investigator Aimée Leduc doesn’t know that her life is about to be upended. Her ex\, Melac\, has been hounding her to move their daughter\, Chloé\, to Brittany. Aimée is fed up with his threats to take her to court and has stopped answering his calls. She doesn’t know he’s waiting for her by the Bassin de la Villette as she leaves a client’s office late one night. When she finds him there\, bleeding in the canal\, he has just been stabbed by an assailant\, who knocks Aimée unconscious and plants the bloody knife in her hands. \nNow Aimée is in police custody\, debilitated by a concussion\, with overwhelming evidence pointing to her as Melac’s killer. She must figure out who murdered Melac–not an easy job\, given the target on his back as a former homicide investigator. Cut off from her typical network and forced to operate under multiple layers of cover\, Aimée must go deep into the underbelly of Paris’s 19th arrondissement\, where she rubs shoulders with biker gangs\, paranoid journalists\, grieving parents\, and frustratingly tight-lipped ex-cops on her hunt for justice.
