SUMMARY:USC PAM: Conversation@PAM: Reimagining the USC PAM Courtyard- Session I
DESCRIPTION:The USC Pacific Asia Museum is looking for the community’s support in reimagining its beloved courtyard through a two-session conversation panel with local specialists in the fields of historic gardens and architecture. Constructed in 1925\, the courtyard has transformed over the past 90 years to become an intercultural hub in Pasadena\, California\, transitioning from a private residence into a community-utilized space. \nAs USC PAM celebrates its 50th anniversary\, it is looking for ways to evolve in its accessibility and community service. These sessions are intended for conversations about the different ways in which this particular space in the museum can serve that goal. We hope to work with the public and our panel of urbanists\, architects\, and botanists to explore ways of increasing accessibility while preserving the courtyard’s treasured classical Chinese garden style. \nThursday\, July 8th\, 4:00 PM \nSession I: \nJoin preservation architect Kelly Sutherlin McLeod\, FAIA and Phillip Bloom\, the Huntington Libraries Curator of the Chinese Garden & Director of the Center for East Asian Studies as they talk about the history of the USC PAM courtyard and Chinese gardens. \n  \nThursday\, August 5th\, 4:00 PM \nSession II: \nJoin our panel of experts for an interactive conversation to explore ways USC PAM can honor the courtyard’s past while making necessary changes for inclusivity and accessibility in the future. \nPanelist include: \nBethany Montagano\, Director\, Pacific Asia Museum \nKelly Sutherlin McLeod\, FAIA \nPhillip Bloom\, Curator of the Chinese Garden at The Huntington Library\, Art Collections\, and Botanical Gardens \nDon Waston\, USC  Pacific Asia Museum Docent \nDiscussion moderated by Vinayak Bharne\, Adjunct Associate Professor of Urbanism\, USC \n  \nFor questions or to request accommodations for this event please contact Cristina Hernandez-Guerrero at ch45852@usc.edu . SUMMARY:Vroman's: Michael Pollan discusses This is Your Mind on Plants
DESCRIPTION:Co-presented by Vroman’s Bookstore\, The Elliott Bay Book Company\, Changing Hands Bookstores\, and Boulder Bookstore hosted by Changing Hands Bookstores. \nMichael Pollan will be joined in conversation by Rick Doblin\, Ph.D. \nIn This Is Your Mind on Plants (Penguin Press) Michael Pollan dives deep into three plant drugs–opium\, caffeine\, and mescaline–and throws the fundamental strangeness\, and arbitrariness\, of our thinking about them into sharp relief. In this unique blend of history\, science\, and memoir\, as well as participatory journalism\, Michael Pollan examines and experiences these plants from several very different angles and contexts\, and shines a fresh light on a subject that is all too often treated reductively–as a drug\, whether licit or illicit. . Based in part on an essay published almost twenty-five years ago\, this groundbreaking and singular consideration of psychoactive plants\, and our attraction to them through time\, holds up a mirror to our fundamental human needs and aspirations\, the operations of our minds\, and our entanglement with the natural world. \nMichael Pollan is the author of eight books\, including How to Change Your Mind\, Cooked\, Food Rules\, In Defense of Food\, The Omnivore’s Dilemma\, and The Botany of Desire\, all of which were New York Times bestsellers. He is also the author of the audiobook Caffeine: How Coffee and Tea Made the Modern World. A longtime contributor to The New York Times Magazine\, Pollan teaches writing at Harvard University and the University of California\, Berkeley. In 2010\, Time magazine named him one of the one hundred most influential people in the world. \nRick Doblin\, Ph.D.\, is the founder and executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). He received his doctorate in Public Policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government\, where he wrote his dissertation on the regulation of the medical uses of psychedelics and marijuana and his Master’s thesis on a survey of oncologists about smoked marijuana vs. the oral THC pill in nausea control for cancer patients. Rick studied with Dr. Stanislav Grof and was among the first to be certified as a Holotropic Breathwork practitioner. His professional goal is to help develop legal contexts for the beneficial uses of psychedelics and marijuana\, primarily as prescription medicines but also for personal growth for otherwise healthy people\, and eventually to become a legally licensed psychedelic therapist. \n  \nEvent tickets include access to the event and a hardcover copy of This Is Your Mind On Plants. \n  \nZoom links will be sent out via Eventbrite Email 48 hours before the event. Books will be sent after the event. A limited number of books will include a bookplate signed by Michael Pollan. \n  \nTicket options include in-store pick up\, shipped domestically (allow up to 3 weeks for delivery)\, or shipped internationally (allow 4-5 weeks for delivery). Books will be mailed to you shortly after the event\, via USPS Media Mail. For those who choose in-store pick up\, you will be contacted by Vroman’s via email shortly after the event and alerted as to when your book will be ready for pick up. \n  \nPLEASE NOTE: This is not a Vroman’s Live event\, we have partnered with The Elliott Bay Book Company\, Changing Hands Bookstores\, and Boulder Bookstore for this virtual event to be held via Zoom Webinar hosted by Changing Hands Bookstores.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Matt Haig discusses The Comfort Book
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/eci3tb8r \nAn essential book from Matt Haig\, the New York Times bestselling author of The Midnight Library\, for anyone in search of hope\, looking for a path to a more meaningful life\, or in need of a little encouragement. \n“It is a strange paradox\, that many of the clearest\, most comforting life lessons are learnt while we are at our lowest. But then we never think about food more than when we are hungry and we never think about life rafts more than when we are thrown overboard.” \nThe Comfort Book is Haig’s life raft: it’s a collection of notes\, lists\, and stories written over a span of several years that originally served as gentle reminders to Haig’s future self that things are not always as dark as they may seem. Incorporating a diverse array of sources from across the world\, history\, science\, and his own experiences\, Haig offers warmth and reassurance\, reminding us to slow down and appreciate the beauty and unpredictability of existence. (Penguin Life) \n  \nPlease note that this will be a pre-recorded event. Register at the Crowdcast link for access.

SUMMARY:USC PAM: Nick Dong: Mendsmith Project
DESCRIPTION:The USC Pacific Asia Museum and artist Nick Dong invite you to participate in an intimate and healing artistic endeavor as part of Divine Immersion: The Experiential Art of Nick Dong. \nThis project emerged after a close friend of Dong’s lost her husband and all that remained was his wedding ring. Dong wanted to do something more meaningful and lasting than offering his sympathies. Given his background in metalsmithing\, Dong offered to craft their rings together\, forging a newly fashioned piece\, bringing positivity and healing to her grief. \nAs part of USC PAM’s special exhibition\, selected participants will be asked to bring two sentimental jewelry pieces or other personal objects to be “mended” together. Working collaboratively with the participant\, Dong will use the stories and memories of their relationship to guide the final design\, marrying the two pieces together to form a new personal item. Participants will be able to keep the newly mended pieces free of charge. \nTo apply to participate\, please RSVP and fill out the following google form before July 5\, 2021. \nApply here to google form \nPlease note that not all RSVP’s/applications will be selected to participate. \nNick Dong will be working on each piece in the gallery during the museum’s open hours. \nMore information on Dong’s work can be found on his website: \nhttps://www.studiodong.com/ \nMore information on Divine Immersion: The Experiential Art of Nick Dong can be found on the USC Pacific Asia Museum website: \nhttps://pacificasiamuseum.usc.edu/exhibitions/upcoming/ \n\nCost: FREE

SUMMARY:USC PAM: Conversation@PAM: Artist Talk - Nick Dong
DESCRIPTION:Join exhibited artist Nick Dong as he discusses his immersive show Divine Immersion: The Experiential Art of Nick Dong\, in an intimate virtual conversation via Zoom. \nThe exhibition journeys us past the loss and pain of the last year caused by COVID-19 into an immersive experience rooted in the ethos of healing. Inspired by a meditative experience at a Buddhist retreat\, the Oakland-based Taiwanese artist\, Nick Dong\, designed a series of immersive installations to recapture our personal and collective spirit. Learn about the artist’s practice and influences before experiencing the work for yourself. \n  \nFor questions or to request accommodations for this event please contact Cristina Hernandez-Guerrero at ch45852@usc.edu . For additional information please visit https://pacificasiamuseum.usc.edu/ \nPlease note that the zoom URL will be shared a week before the event. \n  \nMore about the Artist: \nDong is a conceptual metalsmith\, mixed-media sculptor\, and socio-commodity engineer. From a multidisciplinary maker/craftsman practice he founded studioDONG and leads a team to produce experiential sculptures\, objects\, and installations that combine an advanced knowledge of materials and techniques to engage an audience’s experience beyond the optical. As a Taiwanese-American\, Dong identifies himself as a 21st-century continuation of Wen-ren\, the Chinese cultural lineage of intellect-scholars\, in which each work is a quest of self-evolution\, a vehicle of sharing philosophy. By carefully integrating scientific and handcrafted components\, supernatural movements\, light\, sound\, and various interactive or situational strategies\, Dong’s work produces a fully immersive event\, only complete once a viewer steps into space and the encounter is experienced. \n  \nMore information on Dong’s work can be found on his website: https://www.studiodong.com/
