SUMMARY:Vroman's: Courtney Zoffness\, in conversation with Edan Lepucki\, discusses Spilt Milk
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/yatxjin4 \nWhat role does a mother play in raising thoughtful\, generous children? In her literary debut\, internationally award-winning writer Courtney Zoffness considers what we inherit from generations past–biologically\, culturally\, spiritually–and what we pass on to our children. Spilt Milk is an intimate\, bracing\, and beautiful exploration of vulnerability and culpability. Zoffness relives her childhood anxiety disorder as she witnesses it manifest in her firstborn; endures brazen sexual advances by a student in her class; grapples with the implications of her young son’s cop obsession; and challenges her Jewish faith. Where is the line between privacy and secrecy? How do the stories we tell inform who we become? These powerful\, dynamic essays herald a vital new voice. (McSweeney’s) \nCourtney Zoffness won the Sunday Times Short Story Award\, an Emerging Writers Fellowship from the Center for Fiction\, residency fellowships from the MacDowell Colony\, and the Susan Atefat Prize in Creative Nonfiction from Arts & Letters. Her work has appeared in the Paris Review Daily\, The Southern Review\, Longreads\, Los Angeles Review of Books\, and elsewhere\, and she had Notable Best American Essays in 2018 and 2019. She teaches at Drew University and lives with her family in Brooklyn\, New York. \nEdan Lepucki is the author of the novella If You’re Not Yet Like Me and the novels California and Woman No. 17. Edan created the popular Instagram “Mothers Before”\, and she has edited a book inspired by the project\, published by Abrams Press in 2020. Edan is a graduate of Oberlin College and the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop\, and her fiction and nonfiction have been published in Esquire\, Narrative Magazine\, The New York Times\, The Cut\, and McSweeney’s\, among others. The Los Angeles Times named her a Face to Watch for 2014. She is contributing editor to The Millions and the founder of Writing Workshops Los Angeles.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Wendy Heard discusses She’s Too Pretty to Burn
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/hf8x5iuj \nThe summer is winding down in San Diego. Veronica is bored\, caustically charismatic\, and uninspired in her photography. Nico is insatiable\, subversive\, and obsessed with chaotic performance art. They’re  artists first\, best friends second. But that was before Mick. Delicate\, lonely\, magnetic Mick: the perfect  subject\, and Veronica’s dream girl. The days are long and hot–full of adventure–and soon they are falling in love. Falling so hard\, they never imagine what comes next. One fire. Two murders. Three drowning bodies. One suspect . . . one stalker. This is a summer they won’t survive. \nInspired by The Picture of Dorian Gray\, this sexy psychological thriller explores the intersections of love\, art\, danger\, and power. (Henry Holt & Co.) \nWendy Heard is the author of two adult thrillers: The Kill Club and Hunting Annabelle\, which Kirkus Reviews praised as “a diabolically plotted creep show from a writer to watch.” She’s Too Pretty To Burn\, which Kirkus called “a wild and satisfying romp” in a starred review\, marks her YA debut. She is a member of Sisters in Crime\, International Thriller Writers\, and Mystery Writers of America\, and is a contributor at Crimereads.com and Writer’s Digest. Wendy lives in Los Angeles\, California. \nAiden Thomas is a New York Times Bestselling Author with an MFA in Creative Writing from Mills College. Originally from Oakland\, California\, they now make their home in Portland\, OR. As a queer\, trans Latinx\, Aiden advocates strongly for diverse representation in all media. Aiden’s special talents include: quoting The Office\, useless trivia\, Jenga\, finishing sentences with “is my FAVORITE”\, and killing spiders. Aiden is notorious for not being able to guess the endings of books and movies\, and organizes their bookshelves by color. Aiden’s debut novel\, Cemetery Boys is a Dia de Muertos paranormal romance about Yadriel (a gay\, trans brujo) who accidentally summons the wrong ghost (Swoon Reads/Macmillan\, September 1st\, 2020).

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Raphael Simon (aka Pseudonymous Bosch) & Adam Gidwitz discuss The Anti-Book
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/ztnils1y \nWith nods to The Phantom Tollbooth and Coraline\, this darkly funny fantasy is a classic-in-the-making–the story of a boy who wants the world to disappear . . . and what happens when it does. \nMickey is angry all the time: at his divorced parents\, at his sister\, and at his two new stepmoms\, both named Charlie. And so he can’t resist the ad inside his pack of gum: “Do you ever wish everyone would go away? Buy The Anti-Book! Satisfaction guaranteed.” He orders the book\, but when it arrives\, it’s blank–except for one line of instruction: To erase it\, write it. He fills the pages with all the things and people he dislikes . . . \nNext thing he knows\, he’s wandering an anti-world\, one in which everything and everyone familiar is gone. Or are they? His sister soon reappears–but she’s only four inches tall. A tiny talking house with wings looks strangely familiar\, as does the mysterious half-invisible boy who seems to think that he and Mickey are best buds. The boy persuades Mickey to go find the Bubble Gum King–the king\, who resides at the top of a mountain\, is the only one who might be able help Mickey fix the mess he’s made. \nFull of humor and surprise\, and slyly meaningful\, this is a Wizard of Oz for today’s generation–a fantastical quest for comfort and belonging that will resonate with many\, many readers.  (Dial Books) \nRaphael Simon is an author who lives in Pasadena\, CA\, with his husband and twin daughters. SUMMARY:Vroman's: Andrew Morton discusses Elizabeth & Margaret: The Intimate World of the Windsor Sisters
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/0suj0aug  \nThey were the closest of sisters and the best of friends. But when\, in a quixotic twist of fate\, their uncle Edward Vlll decided to abdicate the throne\, the dynamic between Elizabeth and Margaret was dramatically altered. Forever more Margaret would have to curtsey to the sister she called ‘Lillibet.’ And bow to her wishes.  Elizabeth would always look upon her younger sister’s antics with a kind of stoical amusement\, but Margaret’s struggle to find a place and position inside the royal system–and her fraught relationship with its expectations–was often a source of tension. Famously\, the Queen had to inform Margaret that the Church and government would not countenance her marrying a divorcee\, Group Captain Peter Townsend\, forcing Margaret to choose between keeping her title and royal allowances or her divorcee lover. \nFrom the idyll of their cloistered early life\, through their hidden war-time lives\, into the divergent paths they took following their father’s death and Elizabeth’s ascension to the throne\, this book explores their relationship over the years. Andrew Morton’s latest biography offers unique insight into these two drastically different sisters–one resigned to duty and responsibility\, the other resistant to it–and the lasting impact they have had on the Crown\, the royal family\, and the ways it adapted to the changing mores of the 20th century. (Grand Central Publishing) \nAndrew Morton studied history at the University of Sussex\, England\, with a focus on aristocracy and the 1930s. Morton has written extensively on celebrity including biographies of Tom Cruise\, Angelina Jolie\, and Madonna\, as well as the British royal family. He has written bestselling biographies of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor\, Prince Andrew\, and Meghan Markle. His #1 New York Times bestselling biography Diana: Her True Story won international acclaim\, described by critics as a “modern classic” and “the closest we will ever come to her autobiography.” \nDiana Nixon is a USA Today & International Bestselling Author who writes sweet and spicy romance reads. A book addict and a Master of Law in the past\, she knows how to weave plots that will keep you hooked from start to finish. Her stories can be funny or tragic\, but her characters are strong\, rebellious\, and passionate about everything they do. When Diana isn’t busy writing\, she spends her time reading books or watching historical dramas. A mom of two\, she can’t live without coffee and chocolate\, and she believes that writing is the best cure for everything that can be healed with words. Her books have been published internationally\, in seven languages: English\, Spanish\, Italian\, German\, Russian\, French\, and Portuguese.Diana Nixon is the founder of the literary magazine Inks & Scratches.
