SUMMARY:Vroman's: Terence Lester discusses When We Stand: The Power of Seeking Justice Together
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/rp4ez2xs  \nIt’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all of the injustices that we see in the world. We don’t know what to do and might think that we don’t have anything to offer. But by using our gifts in collaboration with others\, we can do more together than we ever could on our own. Activist Terence Lester knows it’s hard to change the world. But mobilizing and acting together empowers us to do what we can’t do as isolated individuals. Lester looks at the obstacles that prevent us from getting involved\, and he offers practical ways that we can accomplish things together as groups\, families\, churches\, and communities. He helps us find our place in the larger picture\, discerning the unique ways we can contribute and make a difference. By connecting with our neighbors and discovering our own paths of service\, we can drastically change how we follow Christ and see God moving in the world. Togetherness and community give visible testimony of the power of the gospel. In this broken world\, the body of Christ can transform society–when we stand together. (IVP)

DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/mko0dop6  \nIn the summer of 1991\, a teenage girl named Dee McBride vanished in the city of Milwaukee. Nearly thirty years later\, her sister\, Peg\, is still haunted by her sister’s disappearance. Their mother\, on her deathbed\, is desperate to find out what happened to Dee so the family hires a psychic to help find Dee’s body and bring them some semblance of peace. \nThe appearance of the psychic plunges Peg back to the past\, to those final carefree months when she last saw Dee–the summer the Journal Sentinel called “the deadliest . . . in the history of Milwaukee.” Serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer’s heinous crimes dominated the headlines and overwhelmed local law enforcement. The disappearance of one girl was easily overlooked. \nPeg’s hazy recollections are far from easy for her to interpret\, assess\, or even keep clear in her mind. And now digging deep into her memory raises doubts and difficult–even terrifying–questions. Was there anything Peg could have done to prevent Dee’s disappearance? Who was really to blame for the family’s loss? How often are our memories altered by the very act of voicing them? And what does it mean to bear witness in a world where even our own stories are inherently suspect? \nA heartbreaking page-turner\, Willa C. Richards’ debut novel is the story of a broken family looking for answers in the face of the unknown\, and asks us to reconsider the power and truth of memory. (Harper)

But a Black man with cops at the door knows to be afraid. \nThe last thing he expects to hear is that his son Isiah has been murdered\, along with Isiah’s white husband\, Derek. Ike had never fully accepted his son but is devastated by his loss. \nDerek’s father Buddy Lee was almost as ashamed of Derek for being gay as Derek was ashamed his father was a criminal. Buddy Lee still has contacts in the underworld\, though\, and he wants to know who killed his boy. \nIke and Buddy Lee\, two ex-cons with little else in common other than a criminal past and a love for their dead sons\, band together in their desperate desire for revenge. In their quest to do better for their sons in death than they did in life\, hardened men Ike and Buddy Lee will confront their own prejudices about their sons and each other\, as they rain down vengeance upon those who hurt their boys. \nProvocative and fast-paced\, S. A. Cosby’s Razorblade Tears is a story of bloody retribution\, heartfelt change – and maybe even redemption. (Flatiron Books)

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Omar El Akkad discusses What Strange Paradise
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/727sz19p \nMore bodies have washed up on the shores of a small island. Another overfilled\, ill-equipped\, dilapidated ship has sunk under the weight of its too many passengers: Syrians\, Ethiopians\, Egyptians\, Lebanese\, Palestinians\, all of them desperate to escape untenable lives back in their homelands. But miraculously\, someone has survived the passage: nine-year-old Amir\, a Syrian boy who is soon rescued by Vänna. Vänna is a teenage girl\, who\, despite being native to the island\, experiences her own sense of homelessness in a place and among people she has come to disdain. And though Vänna and Amir are complete strangers\, though they don’t speak a common language\, Vänna is determined to do whatever it takes to save the boy. \nIn alternating chapters\, we learn about Amir’s life and how he came to be on the boat\, and we follow him and the girl as they make their way toward safety. What Strange Paradise is the story of two children finding their way through a hostile world. But it is also a story of empathy and indifference\, of hope and despair–and about the way each of those things can blind us to reality. (Knopf Publishing Group)

DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/jhus7mge \nChicago\, 1944: Twenty-year-old Aki Ito and her parents have just been released from Manzanar\, where they have been detained by the US government since the aftermath of Pearl Harbor\, together with thousands of other Japanese Americans. The life in California the Itos were forced to leave behind is gone; instead\, they are being resettled two thousand miles away in Chicago\, where Aki’s older sister\, Rose\, was sent months earlier and moved to the new Japanese American neighborhood near Clark and Division streets. But on the eve of the Ito family’s reunion\, Rose is killed by a subway train. \nAki\, who worshipped her sister\, is stunned. Officials are ruling Rose’s death a suicide. Aki cannot believe her perfect\, polished\, and optimistic sister would end her life. Her instinct tells her there is much more to the story\, and she knows she is the only person who could ever learn the truth. \nInspired by historical events\, Clark and Division infuses an atmospheric and heartbreakingly real crime fiction plot with rich period details and delicately wrought personal stories Naomi Hirahara has gleaned from thirty years of research and archival work in Japanese American history. SUMMARY:USC PAM: Conversation@PAM: Reimagining the USC PAM Courtyard- Session II
DESCRIPTION:The USC Pacific Asia Museum is looking for the community’s support in reimagining its beloved courtyard through a two-session conversation panel with local specialists in the fields of historic gardens and architecture. Constructed in 1925\, the courtyard has transformed over the past 90 years to become an intercultural hub in Pasadena\, California\, transitioning from a private residence into a community-utilized space. \nAs USC PAM celebrates its 50th anniversary\, it is looking for ways to evolve in its accessibility and community service. These sessions are intended for conversations about the different ways in which this particular space in the museum can serve that goal. We hope to work with the public and our panel of urbanists\, architects\, and botanists to explore ways of increasing accessibility while preserving the courtyard’s treasured classical Chinese garden style. \nThursday\, July 8th\, 4:00 PM \nSession I: \nJoin preservation architect Kelly Sutherlin McLeod\, FAIA and Phillip Bloom\, the Huntington Libraries Curator of the Chinese Garden & Director of the Center for East Asian Studies as they talk about the history of the USC PAM courtyard and Chinese gardens. \n  \nThursday\, August 5th\, 4:00 PM \nSession II: \nJoin our panel of experts for an interactive conversation to explore ways USC PAM can honor the courtyard’s past while making necessary changes for inclusivity and accessibility in the future. \nPanelist include: \nBethany Montagano\, Director\, Pacific Asia Museum \nKelly Sutherlin McLeod\, FAIA \nPhillip Bloom\, Curator of the Chinese Garden at The Huntington Library\, Art Collections\, and Botanical Gardens \nDon Waston\, USC  Pacific Asia Museum Docent \nDiscussion moderated by Vinayak Bharne\, Adjunct Associate Professor of Urbanism\, USC \n  \nFor questions or to request accommodations for this event please contact Cristina Hernandez-Guerrero at ch45852@usc.edu . SUMMARY:Vroman's: Richard Lange with Ed Komenda\, discusses Rovers
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/iojgrnjk \nSummer\, 1976. Jesse and his brother\, Edgar\, are on the road in search of victims. They’re rovers\, nearly indestructible nocturnal beings who must consume human blood in order to survive. For seventy years they’ve lurked on the fringes of society\, roaming from town to town\, dingy motel to dingy motel\, stalking the transients\, addicts\, and prostitutes they feed on. \nThis hard-boiled supernatural hell ride kicks off when the brothers encounter a young woman who disrupts their grim routine\, forcing Jesse to confront his past and plunging his present into deadly chaos as he finds himself scrambling to save her life. The story plays out through the eyes of the brothers\, a grieving father searching for his son’s murderer\, and a violent gang of rover bikers\, coming to a shattering conclusion in Las Vegas on the eve of America’s Bicentennial. \nGripping\, relentless\, and ferocious\, Rovers demonstrates once again why Richard Lange has been hailed as an “expert writer\, his prose exact\, his narrative tightly controlled” (Steph Cha\, Los Angeles Times).
