SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Books Search Search for your next favorite book Search Gus Krieger\, in conversation with Lian Dolan\, discusses & signs The Seventh Ribbon
DESCRIPTION:A moving\, whimsical debut love story of ‘what if’ about a grieving widow who attempts to rewrite her past with magical typewriter ribbons to try to save her husband from his unfortunate fate\, for readers of In Five Years and Me Before You . \n“A wholly original tale of love\, fate\, and second (and third and fourth) chances that will leave your jaw on the floor. I’ll be thinking about this book for a long time.” –Colleen Oakley\, USA Today bestselling author of Jane and Dan at the End of the World \nAlone in her snowbound oceanfront cottage\, Caroline Ora mourns the loss of her beloved husband Forest\, killed earlier that year in a violent hit-and-run. Once a celebrated poet\, Caroline now spends her days drowning in grief … until an unlikely discovery changes everything. \nBuried deep in her attic in a dusty wooden case\, Caroline finds several ancient typewriter ribbons. Spontaneously using one to write a story –a simple “what if” wherein her anguish has loosened its grip–Caroline wakes to find it’s miraculously come true. \nMoment by moment\, word by word\, Caroline sets about rewriting her life\, resurrecting her husband through ink and memories. But as the lines between fiction and reality begin to blur\, Caroline learns that every wish has its cost\, and every miracle has its reckoning. \nRiveting\, funny and heartbreaking by turns\, The Seventh Ribbon is an inventive and unforgettable love story.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Sophia de Reeder discusses & signs Callow
DESCRIPTION:An enchanting\, sapphic fantasy adventure for fans of Rachel Gillig and Stephanie Garber. \nWitchcraft is a death sentence in the Kingdom of Scheragen. The ancient art of sorcery has been rooted out\, and the women who practiced it have been either executed or banished to a remote continent. Only one witch remains: Ulyana\, a prisoner of war kept alive for the sole purpose of aiding the King as his spymaster. An immortal temptress who\, before the war\, earned the nasty reputation of eating the hearts of men who had scorned her. \nFor twenty-three year old Evelynn Callow\, a member of one of the wealthiest families in the Kingdom\, cautionary tales of witches have long been the subject of her nightmares. So when Evelynn discovers that her younger sister has gone missing\, she can’t help but assume that she has been abducted by the Kingdom’s enemies. But only Ulyana has the power to track down Evelynn’s lost sister\, a fact that leads Evelynn into a desperate and potentially lethal bargain: in exchange for the witch’s magic\, Ulyana will periodically feed on Evelynn’s blood. As they travel together into the unknown\, Evelynn begins to question the reality for which her illustrious life has depended\, as well as whether or not Ulyana may actually desire the contents of Evelynn’s heart rather than her veins. \n“In a novel of witchcraft\, heroism\, and drop-dead romance\, the real sorcery behind Callow is de Reeder’s storytelling. Once you’re under her spell\, days melt\, time blurs… de Reeder is a true enchantress of prose.” – Jane Lockwood\, Former Editor in Chief of Love & Squalor

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore Truong Tran reads from & signs How to Exi(s)T: A Poet's Memoir\, in celebration with fellow poets Prageeta Sharma and Mimi Tempestt
DESCRIPTION:A neurodivergent gay war refugee navigates academia\, racism\, and indeed life itself as a poet\, artist\, and teacher \nHow to Exi(s)t: A Poet’s Memoir is an experiment in nonlinear autobiography by the author of the American Book Award-winning Book of the Other\, Truong Tran. Beginning in the present–at a writing residency in the aftermath of this success–How to Exi(s)t moves back and forth in time\, in bursts of brief poetic essays grouped by theme. The duality of the title thematizes a dilemma at the heart of the book: how does a poet separate himself from the academic career to which he’s devoted his professional life and what does being a teacher mean outside of it? \nUnpeeling the layers between present and past\, Tran proceeds in reverse as he explores crucial events and figures in his life\, including the reaction to the publication of Book of the Other\, the dynamics of whiteness and power framing his repeated rejection for a tenure track position\, the profound effect of his dyslexia on his evolution as a writer and artist\, the repercussions of being outed by a newspaper after winning an undergrad poetry prize\, traumatic episodes growing up in the Vietnamese diaspora in San Jose\, and complicated relationships with both his family and his chosen family. Attempting to fathom these experiences and connect them to his present self\, Tran examines and reexamines key details rather than dispensing with them in neat anecdotes\, reflecting the volatile process of imagination and memory. \nUnsparing\, even caustic in its instance on racism as a dominant note of American life\, but marked by surprising tenderness and humor\, How to Exi(s)t is a compelling portrayal of Tran’s pedagogical philosophy as well as an interrogation of a poetic language that conceals as much as it reveals.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Saira Mohamed\, in conversation with Ted Braun\, discusses & signs What a Country Owes Its Soldiers
DESCRIPTION:A clarion call to recognize soldiers’ rights\, arguing that volunteering to fight and die for one’s country does not mean consenting to exploitation in the process. \nAmerican leaders endlessly profess their admiration for military service members. But these effusive declarations hardly comport with reality. Soldiers receive shoddy equipment and inadequate medical care; they are ordered to commit crimes and deployed to illegal wars. Such treatment is rarely recognized for what it is: a violation of the duty owed to soldiers by their government. When American service members are injured or killed during training\, for example\, they and their families are barred from suing the military for negligence or malfeasance. And when the torture of detainees at Abu Ghraib came to light\, the subsequent proceedings focused just on low-ranking perpetrators. The psychological harm done to the soldiers themselves by commanders who ordered them to commit torture in the first place went unacknowledged. \nExamining statutes\, treaties\, court cases\, and congressional hearings\, Saira Mohamed shows how the law encourages the treatment of soldiers as mere instruments\, to be used and abused however the government wishes. She also unearths overlooked laws that point in the other direction\, suggesting the possibility of robust protections for service members. Paradoxically\, these get ignored in part because of the popular adulation of the military–the vision of service members as heroes who selflessly endure unlimited sacrifice. The all-volunteer nature of the force also promotes the misguided notion that soldiers have willingly accepted whatever mistreatment they might experience. \nWhat a Country Owes Its Soldiers shows how laws and mindsets can change\, enabling genuine respect for soldiers’ humanity. Acknowledging their rights can transform our understanding of those who fight America’s wars\, and of American warmaking itself.

DESCRIPTION:When Mommy’s heart overflows with love and dreams of sharing life’s magic\, she begins a hopeful journey with the guidance of thoughtful people at the Baby Bank\, an IVF clinic. This is the tender story of how you came to be\, through a mother’s unwavering vision and the miracle of love itself. \nYou and Me\, Meant to Be is a heartfelt celebration of modern families and the courage often necessary to create them. SUMMARY:Vroman Bookstore: Matt O’Hara\, in conversation with Edan Lepucki\, discusses & signs The Flying Death: Poison\, Plunder\, and the Quest for a Miracle Medicine in the Amazon
DESCRIPTION:A dramatic tale of explorers of the 1930s racing to find and harvest a poisonous Amazon vine\, and how their work plundered local tribes and spurred the invention of new medicines. \nIn the fall of 1938\, a young\, frail American explorer set off down a river in the western Amazon in search of curare\, a poison he thought might save his life. Richard Gill had learned that local tribes used curare-laced blow darts to kill animals\, but it was also potentially a cure for many ailments\, including his own. He also thought he could make a fortune by connecting the knowledge of two worlds. Obsessed with curare\, he raced to make deals with Indigenous poison masters in the Amazon and pharmaceutical companies back home\, even as his Russian-born rival Boris Krukoff sought to do the same. \nIn The Flying Death\, the historian Matt O’Hara asks who and what we are willing to sacrifice in the name of discovery and profit. O’Hara brings to life Gill’s epic quest\, a stranger-than-fiction true story that moves from unexplored territory in the Amazon to rogue medical trials and cutthroat corporate boardrooms in the United States. Navigating treacherous terrain and politics\, Gill and Krukoff successfully created a veritable curare-industrial complex\, as the plant became a key element in shock therapy\, transformed surgery in the United States and across the globe\, and eventually led to a Nobel Prize. The Flying Death offers a thrilling ride across Indigenous knowledge\, scientific exploration\, and exploitation\, unearthing a story of discovery that poses searching questions about the price of progress\, who pays it\, and who gets credit.
