SUMMARY:Vroman's: Elizabeth Nyamayaro discusses I Am a Girl from Africa
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/7iit4ol9 \nThe inspiring journey of a girl from Africa whose near-death experience sparked a dream that changed the world. \nWhen severe draught hit her village in Zimbabwe\, Elizabeth\, then eight\, had no idea that this moment of utter devastation would come to define her life purpose. Unable to move from hunger\, she encountered a United Nations aid worker who gave her a bowl of warm porridge and saved her life. This transformative moment inspired Elizabeth to become a humanitarian\, and she vowed to dedicate her life to giving back to her community\, her continent\, and the world. \nGrounded by the African concept of ubuntu–“I am because we are”– I Am a Girl from Africa charts Elizabeth’s quest in pursuit of her dream from the small village of Goromonzi to Harare\, London\, New York\, and beyond\, where she eventually became a Senior Advisor at the United Nations and launched HeForShe\, one of the world’s largest global solidarity movements for gender equality. For over two decades\, Elizabeth has been instrumental in creating change in communities all around the world; uplifting the lives of others\, just as her life was once uplifted. The memoir brings to vivid life one extraordinary woman’s story of persevering through incredible odds and finding her true calling–while delivering an important message of hope and empowerment in a time when we need it most. They can grant immediate and sustained relief from everyday suffering. Shapes of Truth unveils this remarkable discovery and provides step-by-step instructions for encountering them yourself. With parallels in Platonism philosophy and Sufi mysticism\, these eternal body-forms are trippy and wondrous. \nNeal Allen is a coach and writer who studies and practices traditional and contemporary spiritual paths. His private coaching practice blends standard psychodynamics with spirituality methods. Earlier careers included newspaper journalism and corporate marketing for large public companies. He lives in Northern California with his wife\, the author Anne Lamott. \nAnne Lamott is the New York Times best-selling author of Dusk Night Dawn: On Revival and Courage\, published in March. She is the author of 18 more books of essays\, novels including Rosie and Imperfect Birds\, and long-form non-fiction including the classic writing manual Bird by Bird and childrearing memoir Operating Instructions. She is a past recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and an inductee to the California Hall of Fame.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Jill & Dave Henry present The Greatest College Health Guide You Never Knew You Needed
DESCRIPTION:This event was originally scheduled for April 22nd. \nThis is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/a3mk67o6 \nEvery fall\, around eight million young adults crash into college fired up for the best four years of their lives\, ready to experience campus life\, take classes about things they’re interested in\, and meet people from all over the world. Most students\, however\, are better prepared to pick their major or talk to strangers than they are to take care of themselves in the college setting. College students today are more depressed\, anxious\, and stressed than previous waves of students; they’re also more sedentary\, not really exercising\, and living in a meal-plan limbo supplemented with ramen and coffee. \nIn this comprehensive field guild\, high school coaches Jill and Dave Henry break down the facts and deliver doable\, no-BS strategies for managing physical and mental health on campus. In addition to helpful\, interactive graphics\, the coaches share their relatable true stories–ranging from the ridiculous to the serious–to discuss the five biggest health obstacles students face in college. On top of research-backed tips\, The Greatest College Health Guide You Never Knew You Needed also features raw and personal advice from current students on college campuses across the country. \nWhile simply figuring out what to eat and how to exercise can be completely overwhelming\, this guide goes beyond a basic crash course on how to be healthy. Jill and Dave cover everything from crucial time-management skills to the complex sensitivity of self-doubt\, sexual assault\, and depression with humor\, humility\, and heart. The Greatest College Health Guide You Never Knew You Needed is a complete road map for how to take care of your mind and body that will not only set students up to crush the next four years\, but will also provide a foundation they can carry with them for the rest of their lives. (Skyhorse Publishing) \nJill and Dave Henry have been coaching\, entertaining\, and educating teens in Los Angeles for more than twenty years combined. With every graduating class\, they’ve fielded their student-athletes’ concerns about the transition to college\, particularly the dreaded freshman fifteen. Determined to help\, the Henrys decided to leverage their professional backgrounds (Jill is an award-winning statistics teacher; Dave is an Emmy-nominated editor and television producer) and create a resource to help young adults enjoy college without sacrificing their health.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Michael Punke with Michael Hampton discusses Ridgeline
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK:  https://www.crowdcast.io/e/pwbeo6v5 \n  \nIn 1866\, with the country barely recovered from the Civil War\, new war breaks out on the western frontier–a clash of cultures between a young\, ambitious nation and the Native tribes who have lived on the land for centuries. Colonel Henry Carrington arrives in Wyoming’s Powder River Valley to lead the US Army in defending the opening of a new road for gold miners and settlers. Carrington intends to build a fort in the middle of critical hunting grounds\, the home of the Lakota. Red Cloud\, one of the Lakota’s most respected chiefs\, and Crazy Horse\, a young but visionary warrior\, understand full well the implications of this invasion. For the Lakota\, the stakes are their home\, their culture\, their lives. \nAs fall bleeds into winter\, Crazy Horse leads a small war party that confronts Colonel Carrington’s soldiers with near constant attacks. Red Cloud\, meanwhile\, seeks to build the tribal alliances that he knows will be necessary to defeat the soldiers. Colonel Carrington seeks to hold together a US Army beset with internal discord. Carrington’s officers are skeptical of their commander’s strategy\, none more so than Lieutenant George Washington Grummond\, who longs to fight a foe he dismisses as inferior in all ways. The rank-and-file soldiers\, meanwhile\, are still divided by the residue of civil war\, and tempted to desertion by the nearby goldfields. \nThroughout this taut saga–based on real people and events–Michael Punke brings the same immersive\, vivid storytelling and historical insight that made his breakthrough debut so memorable. As Ridgeline builds to its epic conclusion\, it grapples with essential questions of conquest and justice that still echo today. (Henry Holt & Co.) \nMichael Hampton is the Vice President for Development at Appian Way Films.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Andrew McCarthy with Michael Oates Palmer discusses Brat: An 80’s Story
DESCRIPTION:This virtual event is ticketed. Scroll down to purchase.\nFans of Patti Smith’s Just Kids and Rob Lowe’s Stories: I Only Tell My Friends will love this beautifully written\, entertaining\, and emotionally honest memoir by an actor\, director\, and author who found his start as an 80s Brat pack member.\nMost people know Andrew McCarthy from his movie roles in Pretty in Pink\, St. Elmo’s Fire\, Weekend at Bernie’s\, and Less than Zero\, and as a charter member of Hollywood’s Brat Pack. That iconic group of ingenues and heartthrobs included Rob Lowe\, Molly Ringwald\, Emilio Estevez\, and Demi Moore\, and has come to represent both a genre of film and an era of pop culture. In his memoir Brat: An ’80s Story\, McCarthy focuses his gaze on that singular moment in time. The result is a revealing look at coming of age in a maelstrom\, reckoning with conflicted ambition\, innocence\, addiction\, and masculinity. New York City of the 1980s is brought to vivid life in these pages\, from scoring loose joints in Washington Square Park to skipping school in favor of the dark revival houses of the Village where he fell in love with the movies that would change his life. Filled with personal revelations of innocence lost to heady days in Hollywood with John Hughes and an iconic cast of characters\, Brat is a surprising and intimate story of an outsider caught up in a most unwitting success. (Grand Central Publishing) \n  \nThis event ticket includes a signed hardcover copy of Brat: An 80’s Story\, as well as online access to the event for your household. You will receive a link and password to attend the Crowdcast event on the afternoon of Tuesday\, June 8th.    \n  \nPlease note: Ticket options include event access only (free ticket); in-store pick up; shipped domestically (allow up to 3 weeks for delivery); or shipped internationally (allow 4-5 weeks for delivery). SUMMARY:Vroman's: Daisy Hernández in conversation with Alex Espinoza discusses The Kissing Bug
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/dwg7ypio \n  \nGrowing up in a New Jersey factory town in the 1980s\, Daisy Hernández believed that her aunt had become deathly ill from eating an apple. No one in her family\, in either the United States or Colombia\, spoke of infectious diseases. Even into her thirties\, she only knew that her aunt had died of Chagas\, a rare and devastating illness that affects the heart and digestive system. But as Hernández dug deeper\, she discovered that Chagas–or the kissing bug disease–is more prevalent in the United States than the Zika virus. \nAfter her aunt’s death\, Hernández began searching for answers. Crisscrossing the country\, she interviewed patients\, doctors\, epidemiologists\, and even veterinarians with the Department of Defense. She learned that in the United States more than three hundred thousand people in the Latinx community have Chagas\, and that outside of Latin America\, this is the only country with the native insects–the “kissing bugs”–that carry the Chagas parasite. \nThrough unsparing\, gripping\, and humane portraits\, Hernández chronicles a story vast in scope and urgent in its implications\, exposing how poverty\, racism\, and public policies have conspired to keep this disease hidden. A riveting and nuanced investigation into racial politics and for-profit healthcare in the United States\, The Kissing Bug reveals the intimate history of a marginalized disease and connects us to the lives at the center of it all. SUMMARY:Vroman's: An Evening with Alice Waters with Eric Schlosser discussing We Are What We Eat!
DESCRIPTION:Join Vroman’s Bookstore\, in partnership with the Elliott Bay Book Company and Third Place Books for an evening with Alice Waters! \nFrom chef and food activist Alice Waters\, an impassioned plea for a radical reconsideration of the way each and every one of us cooks and eats. \nIn We Are What We Eat\, Alice Waters urges us to take up the mantle of slow food culture\, the philosophy at the core of her life’s work. When Waters first opened Chez Panisse in 1971\, she did so with the intention of feeding people good food during a time of political turmoil. Customers responded to the locally sourced organic ingredients\, to the dishes made by hand\, and to the welcoming hospitality that infused the small space–human qualities that were disappearing from a country increasingly seduced by takeout\, frozen dinners\, and prepackaged ingredients. Waters came to see that the phenomenon of fast food culture\, which prioritized cheapness\, availability\, and speed\, was not only ruining our health\, but also dehumanizing the ways we live and relate to one another. \nOver years of working with regional farmers\, Waters and her partners learned how geography and seasonal fluctuations affect the ingredients on the menu\, as well as about the dangers of pesticides\, the plight of fieldworkers\, and the social\, economic\, and environmental threats posed by industrial farming and food distribution. So many of the serious problems we face in the world today–from illness\, to social unrest\, to economic disparity\, and environmental degradation–are all\, at their core\, connected to food. Fortunately\, there is an antidote. Waters argues that by eating in a “slow food way\,” each of us–like the community around her restaurant–can be empowered to prioritize and nurture a different kind of culture\, one that champions values such as biodiversity\, seasonality\, stewardship\, and pleasure in work. \nThis is a declaration of action against fast food values\, and a working theory about what we can do to change the course. As Waters makes clear\, every decision we make about what we put in our mouths affects not only our bodies but also the world at large–our families\, our communities\, and our environment. We have the power to choose what we eat\, and we have the potential for individual and global transformation–simply by shifting our relationship to food. All it takes is a taste. \nAlice Waters is the executive chef\, founder\, and owner of Chez Panisse Restaurant and Café in Berkeley\, California. The vice president of Slow Food International\, she founded the Edible Schoolyard and has received the French Legion of Honor\, the WSJ Magazine Humanitarian Innovator Award\, and three James Beard Awards. \nEric Schlosser is an investigative journalist and the author of Fast Food Nation\, Reefer Madness\, and\, most recently\, Command and Control\, which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. He has written for Rolling Stone\, The Atlantic\, and The New Yorker\, among others\, and has received a number of journalism honors\, including a National Magazine Award. Schlosser previously worked as a playwright for an independent film company. Two of his plays\, Americans (2003) and We the People (2007)\, have been produced in renowned London theaters. \nEvent tickets include a hardcover copy of WE ARE WHAT WE EAT!. \nTicket options include in-store pick up\, shipped domestically (allow up to 3 weeks for delivery)\, or shipped internationally (allow 4-5 weeks for delivery). But when he is called to the scene of a school shooting\, the professional and personal become intertwined\, and he suspects that whoever is behind the crime may be connected to his own family tragedy. \nAs Marsh and his partner Remy investigate the shooting\, they discover that it is far from straightforward\, and their search for answers leads them to a conspiracy at the highest levels of local government–including within the police force. The stakes in the case become increasingly high\, culminating in a showdown that has Marsh questioning everything he knows\, and wondering if some secrets are better left undiscovered. (G.P. Putnam’s Sons) \nKaren Dionne is the USA Today and #1 internationally bestselling author of the award-winning psychological suspense novel The Marsh King’s Daughter and The Wicked Sister\, published by G.P. Putnam’s Sons in the U.S. and in 25 other countries. She enjoys nature photography and lives with her husband in Detroit’s northern suburbs.
