With sincerity and transparency\, she recounts every anonymous fellowship she has joined (including but not limited to: Debtors Anonymous\, Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous\, and Overeaters Anonymous)\, every hypomanic episode (from worrying about selling out under capitalism to enforcing union rules on her Netflix TV show set to protect her health)\, and every easy 1-to-3-step recipe for fudge in between.\nSingular and inimitable\, Bamford’s memoir explores what it means to keep going and to be a member of society (or any group she’s invited to) despite not being very good at it. In turn\, she hopes to transform isolating experiences into comedy that will make you feel less alone (without turning into a cult following). \nThis ticketed event is a signing only and tickets include a copy of Sure\, I’ll Join Your Cult\, to be picked up and check in the night of the event.

DESCRIPTION:Hong Kong was an experiment in governance. Handed back to China in 1997 after 156 years of British rule\, it was meant to be a carve-out between hostile systems: a bridge between communism and capitalism\, authoritarianism and liberal democracy. “One country\, two systems” kept its media free\, its courts independent and its protests boisterous\, designed also to convince Taiwan of a peaceful solution to Beijing’s desire for reunification. \nYet this formulation excluded Hong Kong’s own people\, their future negotiated by political titans in faraway capitals. In 2019\, an ill-conceived law spear-headed by a sycophantic leader pushed millions to take to the streets in one of the most enduring protest movements the world has ever seen. Xi Jinping responded with a draconian national security law that sought not only to end the demonstrations but quash the “problem” of Hong Kongers’ identity and desire for freedom. \nReverend Chu\, who believed Hong Kong had to carry the spirit of students at Tiananmen Square\, saw his silver-haired comrades who birthed the city’s modern pro-democracy movement handcuffed and taken from their homes. Tommy\, an art student radicalized into throwing Molotov cocktails\, watched “braves” like him brutalized by police before his own arrest prompted him to flee. Finn epitomized the decentralized nature of the movement and its internet-fueled victories\, but online anonymity couldn’t stop his life from unravelling. Gwyneth could predict her eventual fate when she chose to give up her career as a journalist to stand for election as an opposition candidate\, and did it anyway. \nIn Among the Braves\, Shibani Mahtani and Timothy McLaughlin tell the story of Hong Kong’s past\, and what the sacrifices of its people mean for global democracy’s shaky foundation.

Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from them about the ancestral lands that we occupy\, native culture\, and language in this native-led storytelling and craft series for families with children 8 years and younger. \nBio: Joseph Bodle is a member of the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians. He descends from the Tujunga and Quissaunga villages. Joseph has sat on the Senate of the Tribe for District 1 since 2018. He has been a part of the TV and Motion Picture industry for 25 years. \nAbout the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians:\nThe citizens of the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians (Tribe) are the people of northern Los Angeles County. After thousands of years\, foreign powers began colonization in the late 1770s with the arrival of the Spanish followed by the establishment of Mexico and the United States. Despite settler colonization\, the Tribe continues to operate as a tribal community. \nThe Tribe originates in the lineages\, villages\, and cultures of the period that came before the establishment of Mission San Fernando in 1797\, from which their ancestors received the name Fernandeño during enslavement by the Spanish. The Native Americans that were taken to the Mission originally inhabited the villages originating in the Simi\, San Fernando\, Santa Clarita\, and Antelope Valleys. After the Mission period\, they became known as the Fernandeño historical Indian tribe. The Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians is comprised of the descendants of that historical tribe of Fernandeños.
