DESCRIPTION:Known throughout his lifetime as the “undisputed\, unofficial Asian American photographer laureate\,” the late photojournalist Corky Lee documented Asian American and Pacific Islander communities for fifty years\, breaking the stereotype of Asian Americans as docile\, passive\, and\, above all\, foreign to this country. Corky Lee’s Asian America is a stunning retrospective of his life’s work–a selection of the best photographs from his vast collection\, from his start in New York’s Chinatown in the 1970s to his coverage of diverse Asian American communities across the country until his untimely passing in 2021. \nCorky Lee’s Asian America traces Lee’s decades-long quest for photographic justice\, following Asian American social movements for recognition and rights alongside his artistic development as an activist social photographer. Iconic photographs feature protests against police brutality in New York in the 1970s\, a Sikh man draped in an American flag after 9/11\, and a reenactment of the completion of the transcontinental railroad of 1869 featuring descendants of Chinese railroad workers\, and his last photos of community life and struggle during the coronavirus pandemic. \nAsian American writers\, artists\, activists\, and friends of Lee reflect on his life and career and provide rich historical and cultural context to his photographs\, including a foreword from writer Hua Hsu and contributions from artist Ai Weiwei\, filmmaker Renée Tajima-Peña\, writer Helen Zia\, photographer Alan Chin\, historian Gordon Chang\, playwright David Henry Hwang\, and more. \nFeaturing never-before-seen photographs alongside his best-known images\, Corky Lee’s Asian America represents Lee’s mission to chronicle a history of inclusion\, resistance\, ethnic pride\, and patriotism. DESCRIPTION:When Michael Ramos enlisted in the Navy and was assigned to serve as a chaplain’s bodyguard thirteen days before 9/11\, he had no idea he would soon be sent to Iraq. But he embraced the posting\, combat service\, and career for a decade\, until\, at age thirty-four\, the military told him his skill set was no longer relevant. Through divorce and remarriage\, his son’s choice to enlist in the Marines\, the loss of friends to war and suicide\, and his inability to sleep or rest\, Michael struggled with the return to civilian life\, and particularly with civilian attitudes toward veterans. \nIn twenty-four concussive\, embodied\, and nonlinear essays\, Michael creates a challenging and complex portrait of what it means to be a warrior\, civilian\, veteran\, father\, husband\, and teacher–for he ultimately uses the skills he developed in the military to help others find meaning in their lives. While this may sound like a redemption story\, it is instead a brutally honest portrayal that refuses easy answers and seeks to help other war veterans realize they’re not alone as they search for their place in the world.

SUMMARY:SCCM: Connections Exhibits and Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Connections is a public project produced for the Southern California Children’s Museum by the nonprofit Drawing Together in collaboration with four artists: Karen Godfrey and Mary Duman from Wrightwood and Amy Bauer and Emily Gallagher from Los Angeles. The exhibit and workshops aim to explore our connection to each other and the planet and address social isolation. Research has found that nearby nature can help us feel connected by offering socially isolated people an alternative way of feeling connected and overcoming the effect of low social connectedness. \nJoin Southern California Children’s Museum for several workshops and an exhibit that brings nature\, imagination\, and connection for little ones together! This project is made possible by an Impact Grant from the California Arts Council\, a state granting agency. \nWorkshop: April 27th at 11:30 – Interconnected Wonders \nThe Interconnected Wonders workshop offers cooperative activities to experience a felt sense of our place in the larger web of life on Earth. Children will be invited to connect through a community connection action and imaginative play dress-up activity. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nKaren Godfrey: As a mixed media artist\, I am richly inspired and intrigued by the raw wild beauty inherent in the immense and minute wonders of Life itself. I am informed by the vast sensuality of the rhythmic seasons and cycle of Nature: The Spiral Dance of Birth\, Life\, Death\, and Rebirth. \nAmy Bauer: A lifelong maker\, Amy Bauer is an artist\, designer\, educator\, creator of Fun-A-Day-LA\, and Creative Corps Grantee 23-24. Amy explores environmental themes and ties them into an investigation of the likenesses and frictions between her urban life and her folk art aesthetic. \nEmily Gallagher: Emily Gallagher is a soprano and community-based artist living in Los Angeles. She has performed in the United States and Europe and works to unite communities through the arts through programming that is accessible and engaging for a diverse audience. \nMary Duman: Mary Duman is an experienced ceramics instructor and artist for over 30 years\, who currently serves as a resident artist at Cobb Mountain Art and Ecology. Drawing inspiration from nature\, ancient Celtic symbols\, and the Wheel of the Year\, her sculptures act as portals to ancestral wisdom.
