SUMMARY:Vroman's: Naomi Hirahara discuss Evergreen
DESCRIPTION:A Japanese American nurse’s aide navigates the dangers of post-WWII and post-Manzanar life as she attempts to find justice for a broken family in this follow-up to the Mary Higgins Clark Award-winning Clark and Division. \nIt’s been two years since Aki Ito and her family were released from Manzanar detention center and resettled in Chicago with other Japanese Americans. Now the Itos have finally been allowed to return home to California–but nothing is as they left it. The entire Japanese American community is starting from scratch\, with thousands of people living in dismal refugee camps while they struggle to find new houses and jobs in overcrowded Los Angeles. \nAki is working as a nurse’s aide at the Japanese Hospital in Boyle Heights when an elderly Issei man is admitted with suspicious injuries. When she seeks out his son\, she is shocked to recognize her husband’s best friend\, Babe Watanabe. Could Babe be guilty of elder abuse? \nOnly a few days later\, Little Tokyo is rocked by a murder at the low-income hotel where the Watanabes have been staying. When the cops start sniffing around Aki’s home\, she begins to worry that the violence tearing through her community might threaten her family. What secrets have the Watanabes been hiding\, and can Aki protect her husband from getting tangled up in a murder investigation? (Soho Crime)

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Spencer Quinn discuss Mrs. Plansky's revenge
DESCRIPTION:Mrs. Loretta Plansky\, a recent widow in her seventies\, is settling into retirement in Florida while dealing with her 98-year-old father and fielding requests for money from her beloved children and grandchildren. Thankfully\, her new hip hasn’t changed her killer tennis game one bit. \nOne night Mrs. Plansky is startled awake by a phone call from a voice claiming to be her grandson Will\, who desperately needs ten thousand dollars to get out of a jam. Of course\, Loretta obliges–after all\, what are grandmothers for\, even grandmothers who still haven’t gotten a simple “thank you” for a gift sent weeks ago. Not that she’s counting. \nBy morning\, Mrs. Plansky has lost everything. Law enforcement announces that Loretta’s life savings have vanished\, and that it’s hopeless to find the scammers behind the heist. First humiliated\, then furious\, Loretta Plansky refuses to be just another victim. \nIn a courageous bid for justice\, Mrs. Plansky follows her only clue on a whirlwind adventure to a small village in Romania to get her money and her dignity back–and perhaps find a new lease on life\, too.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Adam Rex\, in conversation with Racquel Marie\, discusses 'A little Like Waking'
DESCRIPTION:Zelda is stuck in a dream. A very strange dream\, where people can fly\, bears sneeze money\, and her childhood cat\, Patches\, is somehow alive – despite being run over years ago. Things only get stranger when Zelda meets Langston\, a sweet if overly timid guy who feels more real to her than anyone she’s ever met. \nAs Zelda and Langston explore the far reaches of the dreamscape together\, they find themselves growing closer and closer. But what they uncover along the way pushes them towards a truth neither of them wants to face. Will it turn out that he’s the guy of her dreams\, or is she the girl of his? \nFull of mind-bending artwork\, Adam Rex’s A Little Like Waking is a tender\, insightful read that defies time\, space\, and expectation that’s perfect for fans of Every Day and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.(Roaring Brook Press) \n  \nRacquel Marie grew up in Southern California\, where her passion for storytelling of all kinds was encouraged by her friends and big family. She received a BA in English with an emphasis in creative writing and a minor in gender and sexuality studies from the University of California\, Irvine. She is the author of Ophelia After All\, You Don’t Have a Shot\, and many unfinished first drafts.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Andrew Leland\, in conversation with Rachel Khong\, discusses the Country of the Blind
DESCRIPTION:We meet Andrew Leland as he’s suspended in the liminal state of the soon-to-be blind: he’s midway through his life with retinitis pigmentosa\, a condition that ushers those who live with it from sightedness to blindness over years\, even decades. He grew up with full vision\, but starting in his teenage years\, his sight began to degrade from the outside in\, such that he now sees the world as if through a narrow tube. Soon–but without knowing exactly when–he will likely have no vision left. \nFull of apprehension but also dogged curiosity\, Leland embarks on a sweeping exploration of the state of being that awaits him: not only the physical experience of blindness but also its language\, politics\, and customs. He negotiates his changing relationships with his wife and son\, and with his own sense of self\, as he moves from his mainstream\, “typical” life to one with a disability. Part memoir\, part historical and cultural investigation\, The Country of the Blind represents Leland’s determination not to merely survive this transition but to grow from it–to seek out and revel in that which makes blindness enlightening. \nThought-provoking and brimming with warmth and humor\, The Country of the Blind is a deeply personal and intellectually exhilarating tour of a way of being that most of us have never paused to consider–and from which we have much to learn. (Penguin Press) \n

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Doug McIntyre and Penny Peyser present Frank's Shadow and Sonnets from Suburbia: More Candles than Cake
DESCRIPTION:Frank’s Shadow: Newlywed Danny McKenna’s honeymoon ends abruptly when he learns his father has died\, uncannily\, on the same day as his hero\, Frank Sinatra. Returning home to his knotty Irish American family\, Danny is confronted with a painful truth–while he knows everything about the famous singer\, his own father is a mystery. Tasked with giving a eulogy for a man he hardly knows\, Danny sets out to uncover his dad’s past–an immigrant’s tale of mid-twentieth-century America and the harsh realities of WWII lived in stark contrast to Frank Sinatra’s famously extravagant life. \nAlong the way\, Danny’s own demons nearly destroy him as he struggles to accept his father’s deepest secret–a journey that takes him into the heart of darkness before he learns to live in the light. \nFame\, family\, and forgiveness are among the many themes in Doug McIntyre’s debut novel\, a story full of vibrant scenery\, gripping characters\, humor\, and profound moments of self-realization. Frank’s Shadow is a deeply (sometimes darkly) human story wrapped in the trappings of a delightfully gritty love letter to New York City’s less glamorous neighborhoods. (Greenleaf Book Group Press) \nSonnets From Suburbia: If Shakespeare Were a lady… A cross between humorous poetry and memoir\, Sonnets from Suburbia features Lady Penelope (aka actress Penny Peyser) serving up a funny take on modern day life in Shakespearean sonnet form. \nFrom the foibles of friendship to sexual relationships gone awry\, to aging bodies that misbehave\, to the woes of social media and confounding familial tussles\, she has the uncanny ability to make us smile out loud and chuckle with recognition. This is definitely one of those books for when you need a good laugh. \nThe clever\, compassionate sonnets inside this book make a perfect gift for birthdays\, anniversaries\, and Valentine’s Day and are sure to delight women over 40 (all female readers actually) and the men who love them. \nThink Shakespeare at the mall. \nFor fans of Judith Viorst\, Amy Sedaris and Dorothy Parker. Sonnets from Suburbia is long-time actress Penny Peyser’s first foray into poetry and sonnets\, and she couldn’t be more thrilled about this new venture. \n

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Mark Shrager discusses 'The First Kentucky Derby'
DESCRIPTION:Today’s Kentucky Derby is a multimillion-dollar spectacle involving corporate sponsorship\, worldwide media coverage\, and an annual citywide festival in Louisville. Over its nearly century-and-a-half history\, the Kentucky Derby has grown to be one of the biggest sporting events of the year\, attracting 150\,000 spectators at the track and nearly 15 million television viewers on the first Saturday each May. But 1875\, the year of the first Derby\, was a different time. The Louisville Jockey Club track\, which would one day bear the name “Churchill Downs\,” was a small structure that might\, on its best day\, provide seating and standing room for 12\,000 spectators. The grandstand was plain and functional and included a section reserved for bookmakers\, whose trade was legal and who operated in the open. Perhaps most significantly\, the majority of jockeys in the race were Black\, in stark contrast to the present-day Derby\, where participation by African-American jockeys is rare. In The First Kentucky Derby\, racing historian Mark Shrager examines the events leading up to the first “Run for the Roses\,” the unsuccessful effort that the winning owner might have made to rig the race for his preferred horse\, and the prominent role played by African Americans in Gilded Age racing culture–a holdover from pre-emancipation days\, when slaves were trained from birth to ride for their wealthy owners and grew up surrounded by the horses that would be their life’s work. SUMMARY:Vroman's: Special Storytime featuring Mirelle Ortega\, in conversation with Danielle Davis\, presenting River of Mariposas
DESCRIPTION:From the author of Magic: Once Upon a Faraway Land comes a story of imagination and the determination of a child to bring back the butterflies–even if she has to make them herself \nCan you imagine a time when the land and the sky belonged to the mariposas? I can . . . \nA young girl dreams of the land’s historic mariposas amarillas and is determined to re-create their glory\, even if her butterflies are made of paper. But when nature thwarts her plans\, life\, magic\, and yes\, even the rain\, bring something more beautiful than she ever could have crafted. Based on the author’s own memories of a hurricane that diverted the migration of thousands of butterflies through her hometown near Veracruz\, Mexico\, this beautiful story captures the essence of imagination and the beauty of the unexpected. SUMMARY:Vroman's Live: Sophie Diener and Lang Leav
DESCRIPTION:Register early for an email reminder!\nCROWDCAST LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/c/diener-leav \nPoets Sophie Diener and Lang Leav present their latest releases\, Someone Somewhere Maybe and Others Were Emeralds\, respectively. \nSomeone Somewhere Maybe – For fans of Rupi Kaur\, Cleo Wade\, and Amanda Lovelace\, Someone Somewhere Maybe speaks to the joys and sorrows of finding your way as a young woman today. Poignant and beautifully written\, TikTok fan favorite Sophie Diener’s debut poetry collection takes readers on an introspective journey through first love\, first heartbreak\, first loss\, identity\, and self-worth. Filled with honesty and warmth\, each poem reveals something new about the human condition\, and brilliantly captures what growing up feels like\, in a way that is both relatable and affirming. Someone Somewhere Maybe is the perfect companion for a rainy day\, curling up in bed with a cup of tea\, sitting on the porch with a glass of lemonade\, or laying on the beach watching the waves. It offers readers hope\, healing\, understanding\, and the certainty that they are not alone. (St. Martin’s Griffin) \nOthers Were Emeralds – The daughter of Cambodian refugees\, Ai grew up in the small Australian town of Whitlam populated by Asian immigrants who once fled war-torn countries to rebuild their shattered lives. It is now the late 90’s and despite their parent’s harrowing past\, Ai and her tightknit group of school friends: charismatic Brigitte\, sweet\, endearing Bowie\, shy\, inscrutable Tin\, and politically minded Sying\, lead seemingly ordinary lives\, far removed from the unimaginable horrors suffered by their parents. But that carefree innocence is shattered in their last year of school when Ai and her friends encounter a pair of racist men whose cruel acts of intimidation spiral into senseless violence. Grappling with the magnitude of her grief at such a young age\, Ai leaves Whitlam for college before her trauma has a chance to fully resolve. In her second year of college Ai suffers a mental health crisis\, driving her back home to Whitlam\, a place she swore never to return. There\, she reconnects with those she left behind and together they are compelled to look back on the tragedy that shaped their adolescence and examine the role they may have unwittingly played.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Thomas Vozzo discusses the Homeboy Way: A Radical approach to Business and Life
DESCRIPTION:Leading with heart\, authenticity and purpose\, Thomas Vozzo provides a clear path to a new bottom line–including 55 rules to break–bringing the Homeboy Way to life as the perfect anecdote to the massive tidal currents of social injustice and inequities. \nBy every traditional measurement of success\, Vozzo was a clear winner. In his world of billion-dollar revenues and million-dollar profits\, he knew exactly what shareholders wanted and how to get it for them. \nThen\, through a series of fateful events\, Vozzo landed as CEO of Homeboy Industries\, the most successful gang intervention\, rehabilitation\, and re-entry program in the country\, founded by Jesuit priest Greg Boyle. “I arrived at Homeboy at a time when I needed to learn more about myself and my life’s journey\,” Vozzo writes. “And after 8 years of working with the poor\, forgotten\, and demonized people of our society\, I’ve come to learn that I didn’t really know as much about life as I thought.” \nVozzo’s enlightening journey leads to his recognition that a radical approach is needed in business and in life: “What Homeboy has taught me is that we need to do business differently . . . . We need to bust up the system\, swim upstream\, avoid herd mentality.” \nBlending personal stories of his day-to-day with Fr. Greg and the Homies along with counterintuitive business ideas that are changing lives for the better\, Vozzo shows you how you can live\, lead\, and shake things up with toughness\, determination\, compassion\, and grit. \nThat’s the Homeboy Way.
