Four dogs accompanied by their handlers will be on site! All activities are included with general admission. \nAbout Guide Dogs of America: \nLocated on a beautiful 7.5-acre campus in Los Angeles\, Guide Dogs of America serves a diverse range of individuals from the U.S. and Canada. Our mission is to transform lives through partnerships with service dogs. At Guide Dogs of America\, we transform lives through partnerships with service dogs. We breed\, raise\, and train guide dogs for individuals who are blind/visually impaired and service dogs for veterans and children with autism. We also place facility dogs with professionals in hospitals\, schools\, and courtrooms. Our highly skilled canines become trusted companions that increase people’s confidence\, mobility\, and independence. All programs and services\, including transportation\, personalized training\, room/board\, and postgraduate support\, are provided at no cost to the recipient. \nAbout Play for All Abilities: \nSCCM welcomes children and families of all abilities. Play for All Abilities hours take place the last Thursday of every month from 12:30-3:30 PM. These are dedicated play hours when we welcome families and children with developmental differences. DESCRIPTION:Join Pasadena Heritage for a walking tour of the Playhouse District. \nPasadena\, settled by a group of farmers from Indiana in the 1870s\, developed initially along the Arroyo Seco. The Pasadena Playhouse Historic District contains approximately 34 buildings\, which represent the eastward growth of the City’s urban core during the 1920s and 1930s after Pasadena’s economy had changed from agriculture to tourism. The development of this area was spurred by the construction of Pasadena’s grand and imposing Civic Center in the 1920s\, prompting the construction of residential\, religious\, and cultural facilities in the district. This walking tour includes the Scottish Rite Temple\, the United Artist Theater\, the Pasadena Playhouse\, the Professional Building (Pasadena’s only example of Gothic revival office building architecture)\, and the Bank of the West building\, to name a few. \nTours last approximately 1.5 hours with a walking distance of approximately 1 mile.

SUMMARY:Pasadena Heritage: Lecture with Graham Larkin "Lessons from the Daylight Factory"  Swanson & Peterson's Furniture Works
DESCRIPTION:In 1929\, a red brick building with a dramatic expanse of windows was constructed on the eastern edge of Pasadena\, just west of Eaton Wash and south of the Santa Fe railway. Built to the design of McNeal Swasey\, architect of the Hotel Constance and other local landmarks\, this facility served for more than forty years as the Swanson & Peterson workshop and showroom. Swedish émigrés David Swanson and Erik Peterson were makers of fine custom furniture and cabinetry throughout LA County\, and Swasey’s building is a testament to their own high standards of design and fabrication. Modest on the outside\, it opens onto a surprisingly vast and well-lit factory floor\, beneath a sawtooth roof cleverly hidden from the street. This is a highly evolved example of a daylight factory\, complete with passive lighting and ventilation systems — not to mention resistance to fire and vibrations. A prime example of the golden age of sustainable design and a repository of local history\, Swasey’s building has held up for almost a century. A potential project could demolish the building\, but it is one worthy of saving! \nAbout the Speaker\nGraham Larkin is a Pasadena-based historian\, curator\, and advocate for livable streets. After a decade in the US\, studying and teaching art and architectural history (PhD Harvard\, 2003; postdoc Stanford\, 2003-2005)\, he returned to his native Canada. There he worked at various federal agencies\, including six years as Curator of European & American Art at the National Gallery of Canada. An interest in sustainable urbanism led him to found Vision Zero Canada\, advocating for the elimination of traffic harm and the promotion of active mobility. During the pandemic\, he moved back to California\, where he is working as an architectural historian.

DESCRIPTION:PASADENA\, Calif.— The ribbon cutting ceremony for the Union Street Protected Bikeway project along Union Street between Arroyo Parkway and Hill Avenue and along Holliston Avenue between Union Street and Cordova Street is scheduled for Saturday\, September 9\, 2023\, in front of City Hall from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. \nThe Union Street Protected Bikeway is a 1.5-mile-long two-way protected bike lane along Union Street and a 0.3-mile-long bike boulevard along Holliston Avenue with traffic signal and curb ramp improvements along both streets. This project is an opportunity for residents and visitors to reach Pasadena destinations such as Old Pasadena\, Playhouse Village\, Pasadena City College\, and CalTech on a bike. \nA ribbon-cutting ceremony and resource fair will take place on Saturday\, September 9\, 2023\, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in Centennial Square. Local\, state\, and federal elected officials and dignitaries have been invited to speak at the event and join us in an inaugural bike ride. The morning’s events will begin at 8:30 a.m.\, with dignitaries speaking at 9:30 a.m. and a short inaugural bike ride on Union Street from City Hall to Playhouse Village Park and back\, immediately to follow. \n\n\n\nThe Playhouse House Village team will be set up at Playhouse Village Park\, offering a community water station to all ride participants.
