SUMMARY:Vroman's: A Special Story Time with Michelle Garcia Andersen presenting The Owl Who Asks Why
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Please register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/bcnl789m \nLittle Owl and Little Wolf have so many questions for their parents. “Why can’t we move our eyes?” “When will I no longer be a pup?” But owls don’t ask “Why?” They ask “Whooo?” And wolves don’t ask “When?” They ask “Hoooow?” Mom and Dad say it’s silly to even consider asking those sorts of questions. \nFeeling teased and misunderstood\, Little Owl and Little Wolf decide to run away from home for good. After straying too far from the path\, the pair discovers that they’re lost in the forest and begin to wonder if they’ve made the right decision by leaving the pack. Little Owl and Little Wolf realize that the only way to make it back to their families is to not be afraid to ask the right questions\, their own way. \nThis heartwarming tale of friendship from author Michelle Garcia Andersen and artist Ayesha Rubio will remind young readers that by staying true to yourself and embracing what makes you unique\, good things come to you. (Page Street Kids) \nMichelle Garcia Andersen wrote this story after being inspired by the owls that live in the trees alongside her writing studio. She is delighted to be writing picture books for children; it has been a lifelong dream of hers. When she’s not reading and writing\, she enjoys hiking\, mountain biking\, kayaking\, walking her dogs\, gardening and anything else that gets her outdoors. Michelle and her husband have three teenage kids and live in a home full of laughter.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Andromeda Romano-Lax discusses Annie and the Wolves
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Please register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/bqz5fige \nRuth McClintock is obsessed with Annie Oakley. For nearly a decade\, she has been studying the legendary sharpshooter\, convinced that a scarring childhood event was the impetus for her crusade to arm every woman in America. This search has cost Ruth her doctorate\, a book deal\, and her fiancé–but finally it has borne fruit. She has managed to hunt down what may be a journal of Oakley’s midlife struggles\, including secret visits to a psychoanalyst and the desire for vengeance against the “Wolves\,” or those who have wronged her. \nWith the help of Reece\, a tech-savvy senior at the local high school\, Ruth attempts to establish the journal’s provenance\, but she’s begun to have jarring out-of-body episodes parallel to Annie’s own lived experiences. As she solves Annie’s mysteries\, Ruth confronts her own truths\, including the link between her teenage sister’s suicide and an impending tragedy in her Minnesota town that Ruth can still prevent. (Soho Press) \nAndromeda Romano-Lax was born in Chicago and is now a resident of Vancouver Island\, Canada. She worked as a freelance journalist and travel writer before turning to fiction. Her first novel\, The Spanish Bow\, was translated into eleven languages and was chosen as a New York Times Editors’ Choice\, BookSense pick\, and one of Library Journal’s Best Books of the Year. Her novels reflect her diverse interest in the arts\, history\, science and technology\, as well as her love of travel and her time spent living abroad. Andromeda co-founded and continues to blog for 49 Writers\, a nonprofit organization. She has taught fiction in the University of Alaska Anchorage low-residency MFA in Creative Writing program and currently works with novelists and memoirists as a freelance book coach. \nGayle Brandeis is the author of The Book of Dead Birds\, the winner of Barbara Kingsolver’s Bellwether Prize\, an award in support of a literature of social change. Reviewers have highly praised this\, her first novel\, and Toni Morrison said: It has an edgy beauty that enhances perfectly the seriousness of its contents. She is also the author. SUMMARY:Vroman's: Friends In Deed Pasadena present Katherine Seligman discusses At the Edge of the Haight
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Please register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/10cqtgvm \nMaddy Donaldo\, homeless at twenty\, has made a family of sorts in the dangerous spaces of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. She knows whom to trust\, where to eat\, when to move locations\, and how to take care of her dog. It’s the only home she has. When she unwittingly witnesses the murder of a young homeless boy and is seen by the perpetrator\, her relatively stable life is upended. Suddenly\, everyone from the police to the dead boys’ parents want to talk to Maddy about what she saw. As adults pressure her to give up her secrets and reunite with her own family before she meets a similar fate\, Maddy must decide whether she wants to stay lost or be found. Against the backdrop of a radically changing San Francisco\, a city which embraces a booming tech economy while struggling to maintain its culture of tolerance\, At the Edge of the Haight follows the lives of those who depend on makeshift homes and communities. \nAs judge Hillary Jordan says\, “This book pulled me deep into a world I knew little about\, bringing the struggles of its young\, homeless inhabitants–the kind of people we avoid eye contact with on the street–to vivid\, poignant life. The novel demands that you take a close look. If you knew\, could you still ignore\, fear\, or condemn them? And knowing\, how can you ever forget?” (Algonquin Books) \nKatherine Seligman is a journalist and author in San Francisco. As a reporter\, she’s focused on social issues\, from homelessness\, mental health and end of life issues to the city’s boom and bust cycles. But she’s also written about everything else\, from self-appointed graffiti curators\, urban coyotes and embryonic sex selection to what her kids learned growing up in Haight Ashbury. She has been a staff writer at the San Francisco Chronicle Magazine and a reporter for the San Francisco Examiner and USA Today. Her stories have appeared in Redbook\, Life\, Time\, California Magazine\, PBS Next Avenue\, CALmatters\, Al Jazeera America\, and the anthology “Fresh Takes.” She is a member of the San Francisco Writers’ Grotto and loves working in clay. \nHillary Jordan is the author of the novels Mudbound (2008) and When She Woke (2011)\, as well as the digital short “Aftermirth.” Her stories have been translated into 15 languages. When she’s not scribbling away\, Hillary teaches the occasional writing workshop and gives talks at colleges\, literary festivals\, and community libraries. She has a BA from Wellesley College and an MFA in Creative Writing from Columbia University. She grew up in Dallas\, TX and Muskogee\, OK and currently lives in Brooklyn\, along with half the writers in America. \nFriends in Deed is an interfaith organization that provides supportive services to meet basic human needs\, so our homeless and at-risk neighbors can rebuild their lives. “Celebrating more than 120 years of service\, we meet the needs of our clients by leveraging our small\, but dedicated staff\, with many volunteers. Friends In Deed meets people where they are\, without judgment or restrictions that deny people the help they need. We bring dignity to homelessness and poverty. Our staff’s smiling faces and helping hands ensure that individuals in need are safe and fed and find a vision of hope for their futures.” Find out more about Friends in Deed on their website.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Rucker Moses & Theo Gangi discuss Kingston and the Magician’s Lost and Found
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Please register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/5e31r18m \nMagic has all but disappeared in Brooklyn\, but one tenacious young magician is determined to bring it back in this exciting middle grade mystery. \nKingston has just moved from the suburbs back to Echo City\, Brooklyn–the last place his father was seen alive. Kingston’s father was King Preston\, one of the world’s greatest magicians. Until one trick went wrong and he disappeared. Now that Kingston is back in Echo City\, he’s determined to find his father. \nSomehow\, though\, when his father disappeared\, he took all of Echo City’s magic with him. Now Echo City–a ghost of its past–is living up to its name. With no magic left\, the magicians have packed up and left town and those who’ve stayed behind don’t look too kindly on any who reminds them of what they once had. \nWhen Kingston finds a magic box his father left behind as a clue\, Kingston knows there’s more to his father’s disappearance than meets the eye. He’ll have to keep it a secret–that is\, until he can restore magic to Echo City. With his cousin Veronica and childhood friend Too Tall Eddie\, Kingston works to solve the clues\, but one wrong move and his father might not be the only one who goes missing. (G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young Readers) \nRucker Moses is the pen name of Craig S. Phillips and Harold Hayes Jr. They both hail from Atlanta and started telling stories together at the University of Georgia. Together\, they’ve been nominated for three Emmys for writing in a children’s program and have written for TV shows based on books by R. L. Stine and Christopher Pike. They also make virtual reality experiences and own a production company named SunnyBoy Entertainment. In no particular order\, their favorite things to write about are ninjas\, magic\, space\, and abandoned amusement parks. When not doing all that\, they are hanging with their wonderful families at home in Los Angeles. \nTheo Gangi is a novelist and writing teacher based in Brooklyn. He’s written several acclaimed novels and short stories\, and he’s worked on shows for Netflix. He writes far-out adventures that happen right next door. He directs the MFA program at St. Francis College and lives with his wife\, young son\, and their dog. Kingston and the Magician’s Lost and Found is his first book for young readers.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Nicole LaPorte and Jeff Selingo discuss Guilty Admissions & Who Gets In and Why: A Year Inside College Admissions
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Please register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/k9qs7ugk \nGuilty Admissions: The Bribes\, Favors\, and Phonies Behind the College Cheating Scandal weaves together the story of an unscrupulous college counselor named Rick Singer\, and how he preyed on the desperation of some of the country’s wealthiest families living in a world defined by fierce competition\, who function under constant pressure to get into the “right” schools\, starting with pre-school; non-stop fundraising and donation demands in the form of multi-million-dollar galas and private parties; and a community of deeply insecure parents who will do anything to get their kids into name-brand colleges in order to maintain their own A-list status.  Investigative reporter Nicole LaPorte lays bare the source of this insecurity–that in 2019\, no special “hook” in the form of legacy status\, athletic talent\, or financial giving can guarantee a child’s entrance into an elite school. The result is paranoia\, deception\, and true crimes at the peak of the American social pyramid. \nWith a glittering cast of Hollywood actors–including Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin–hedge fund CEOs\, sales executives\, and media titans\, Guilty Admissions is a soap-opera-slash-sneak-peek-behind-the-curtains at America’s richest social circles; an examination of the cutthroat world of college admissions; and a parable of American society in 2019\, when the country is run by a crass tycoon and all totems of status and achievement have become transactional and removed from traditions of ethical restraint.  A world where the rich get whatever they want\, however they want it. (Twelve) \nGetting into a top-ranked college has never seemed more impossible\, with acceptance rates at some elite universities dipping into the single digits. In Who Gets In and Why\, journalist and higher education expert Jeffrey Selingo dispels entrenched notions of how to compete and win at the admissions game\, and reveals that teenagers and parents have much to gain by broadening their notion of what qualifies as a “good college.” Hint: it’s not all about the sticker on the car window. \nSelingo\, who was embedded in three different admissions offices–a selective private university\, a leading liberal arts college\, and a flagship public campus–closely observed gatekeepers as they made their often agonizing and sometimes life-changing decisions. He also followed select students and their parents\, and he traveled around the country meeting with high school counselors\, marketers\, behind-the-scenes consultants\, and college rankers.  While many have long believed that admissions is merit-based\, rewarding the best students\, Who Gets In and Why presents a more complicated truth\, showing that “who gets in” is frequently more about the college’s agenda than the applicant. In a world where thousands of equally qualified students vie for a fixed number of spots at elite institutions\, admissions officers often make split-second decisions based on a variety of factors–like diversity\, money\, and\, ultimately\, whether a student will enroll if accepted. \nOne of the most insightful books ever about “getting in” and what higher education has become\, Who Gets In and Why not only provides an usually intimate look at how admissions decisions get made\, but guides prospective students on how to honestly assess their strengths and match with the schools that will best serve their interests. SUMMARY:Vroman's: Ioan Grillo discusses Blood Gun Money
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Please register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/yc89s51l \nThe gun control debate is revived with every mass shooting. But far more people die from gun deaths on the street corners of inner city America and across the border as Mexico’s powerful cartels battle to control the drug trade. Guns and drugs aren’t often connected in our heated discussions of gun control–but they should be. In Ioan Grillo’s groundbreaking new work of investigative journalism\, he shows us this connection by following the market for guns in the Americas and how it has made the continent the most murderous on earth. \nGrillo travels to gun manufacturers\, strolls the aisles of gun shows and gun shops\, talks to FBI agents who have infiltrated biker gangs\, hangs out on Baltimore street corners\, and visits the ATF gun tracing center in West Virginia. Along the way\, he details the many ways that legal guns can cross over into the black market and into the hands of criminals\, fueling violence here and south of the border. Simple legislative measures would help close these loopholes\, but America’s powerful gun lobby is uncompromising in its defense of the hallowed Second Amendment. Perhaps\, however\, if guns were seen not as symbols of freedom\, but as key accessories in our epidemics of addiction\, the conversation would shift. Blood Gun Money is that conversation shifter. (Bloomsbury Publishing) \nIoan Grillo is a contributing writer at the New York Times specializing in crime and drugs. Based in Mexico City\, he has also worked for Time magazine\, the History Channel\, CNN\, Reuters\, the Associated Press\, and Esquire. He is the author of El Narco\, a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Award\, and Gangster Warlords\, a New York Times Book Review Editor’s Choice and a Guardian Book of the Year.
