SUMMARY:Boston Court Pasadena: WANDER/WONDER Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:Wander/Wonder features the work of two Los Angeles-based artists: Jeanne Dunn and Sonja Schenk. Both artists depict natural elements in their works that speak volumes about the wondrous and terrifying interconnectedness of humanity and our environment. \nIn paintings by Jeanne Dunn\, the subject is monumental\, awe-inspiring trees and forests. Both large-scale paintings are from her Tangle Tree Painting series\, in which the artist writes “I use a paintbrush like a dowser uses a divining rod.” Using a lustrous color palette\, her works create portals through which we can experience our natural environment e. Dunn’s trees feel like unique individuals who form connections with one another similar to human relationships. These connections are rendered in the way each trunk or branch bends towards one another and in the reaching out of their roots. \nAlthough the work of Sonja Schenk similarly represents the artist’s intense engagement with the environment around her\, these particular bodies of work investigate man-made structures unique to Los Angeles. Schenk’s inspiration for the suspended sculpture titled The End was imagining what kind of ruins would remain in the West once humanity is no longer on Earth. The paintings on view from the New Mountain series are at once serenely beautiful and unnerving–– the saturated hues of the skies hinting at the intense smog in the Southern California air. \nIn presenting the works of Jeanne Dunn and Sonja Schenk\, Wander/Wonder inspires a deeper connection with the world around us\, acknowledges the journey we’re all on together\, and reminds us to be gentle with one another and with the Earth.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Cory Doctorow discusses The Bezzle: A Martin Hench Novel
DESCRIPTION:The year is 2006. Martin Hench is at the top of his game as a self-employed forensic accountant\, a veteran of the long guerrilla war between people who want to hide money\, and people who want to find it. He spends his downtime on Catalina Island\, where scenic\, imported bison wander the bluffs and frozen\, reheated fast food burgers cost 25$. Wait\, what? When Marty disrupts a seemingly innocuous scheme during a vacation on Catalina Island\, he has no idea he’s kicked off a chain of events that will overtake the next decade of his life. \nMartin has made his most dangerous mistake yet: trespassed into the playgrounds of the ultra-wealthy and spoiled their fun. To them\, money is a tool\, a game\, and a way to keep score\, and they’ve found their newest mark–California’s Department of Corrections. Secure in the knowledge that they’re living behind far too many firewalls of shell companies and investors ever to be identified\, they are interested not in the lives they ruin\, but only in how much money they can extract from the government and the hundreds of thousands of prisoners they have at their mercy. \nA seething rebuke of the privatized prison system that delves deeply into the arcane and baroque financial chicanery involved in the 2008 financial crash\, The Bezzle is a sizzling follow-up to Red Team Blues.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Phillip B. Williams discusses Ours
DESCRIPTION:In this ingenious\, sweeping novel\, Phillip B. Williams introduces us to an enigmatic woman named Saint\, a fearsome conjuror who\, in the 1830s\, annihilates plantations all over Arkansas to rescue the people enslaved there. She brings those she has freed to a haven of her own creation: a town just north of St. Louis\, magically concealed from outsiders\, named Ours. \nIt is in this miraculous place that Saint’s grand experiment–a truly secluded community where her people may flourish–takes root. But although Saint does her best to protect the inhabitants of Ours\, over time\, her conjuring and memories begin to betray her\, leaving the town vulnerable to intrusions by newcomers with powers of their own. As the cracks in Saint’s creation are exposed\, some begin to wonder whether the community’s safety might be yet another form of bondage. \nSet over the course of four decades and steeped in a rich tradition of American literature informed by Black surrealism\, mythology\, and spirituality\, Ours is a stunning exploration of the possibilities and limitations of love and freedom by a writer of capacious vision and talent.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Kate Anthony discusses The D Word
DESCRIPTION:From the host of the critically acclaimed The Divorce Survival Guide Podcast comes a book that provides the clarity\, peace\, and answers women need to make empowered decisions about their marriages\, break unhealthy patterns\, and build the life they truly want. \nEvery year\, close to a million women struggle to decide whether to divorce their partners. Some are in relationships they know to be unsalvageable\, yet they’re terrified that divorce will hurt their kids. Others feel guilt-ridden and confused over their unhappiness with a spouse who seems\, to the outside world at least\, to be perfectly fine. And then there are those in between\, restless and aware of problems that may or may not be fixable\, with no idea how to tell the difference. \nThe D Word is the definitive yet accessible guide for everyone who wants to take control of their lives\, either by ending or repairing their marriage. Written in Kate Anthony’s signature straight-talking\, empowering style\, The D Word is more than a practical handbook for those considering divorce. It also reveals how cultural and societal influences negatively affect our relationships and expectations\, stacking the odds against women.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Jeffrey Siger discusses At Any Cost
DESCRIPTION:Chief Inspector Kaldis is initially dismayed to be asked to investigate a series of suspicious forest fires that took place last summer. In Greece\, forest fires are an inevitability\, and he fears he and his team are being set up to take the political blame for this year’s blazes. \nHe quickly becomes suspicious\, though\, that the forests were torched for profit – and for a project on a far grander scale than the usual low-level business corruption. There are whispers on the wind that shadowy foreign powers intend to establish a surreptitious mega-internet presence on the island of Syros\, with the intent to weaponize the digital world to their own dark ends. \nCan Kaldis and his team stop the hostile foreign takeover of the idyllic island – or will the rise of the metaverse set not just Greece\, but the whole world\, on fire?

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Gian Sardar discusses When the World Goes Quiet
DESCRIPTION:In the final days of World War I\, an aspiring artist’s courageous journey is just beginning in a powerful novel about love\, danger\, and survival by the author of Take What You Can Carry. \nIt’s 1918 in German-occupied Bruges\, Belgium. With luck\, Evelien will make it to the end of the war and be given what she was promised: a prized painting in exchange for safeguarding her employer’s possessions. Until then\, Evelien knows to keep her head down and stay out of trouble. But life never goes to plan\, especially in war. \nA member of the Resistance approaches Evelien: steal a list of names hidden in her employer’s home. In return\, she’ll get a letter from her long-missing husband\, Emiel. She’d lost hope of Emiel’s survival\, but the promised letter puts her certainty of his death in question. Evelien begins her mission and soon forms a friendship with a soldier who is struggling with the devastating demands of battle. Their shared passion for art deepens the bond\, and Evelien faces a heart-wrenching truth: she longs for Emiel’s safe return…but not necessarily to her. \nAs the final days of the war loom closer\, Evelien has never been in more danger. And should she survive the war’s bitter end\, what choices will she make for a life beyond liberation?

SUMMARY:Boston Court Pasadena: Click\, Clack\, Moosic with Collective
DESCRIPTION:This delightful music programming for ages 3-7 is a live musical storytime event featuring the Click Clack Moo! book by Doreen Cronin set to original music by Helix Collective resident composer\, Phil Popham. Come meet musicians\, explore an instrument petting zoo\, and hear Click Clack Moo come to life! \nABOUT THE PROJECT \nAn educational concert featuring the Click Clack Moo! book set to original music by Helix Collective resident composer\, Phil Popham. This original musical work set to the popular book Click Clack Moo by Doreen Cronin was commissioned by the West Michigan Symphony. This popular concert for children (ages 3 – 7) has been performed by that symphony for ten years running with enormous success. \nHelix Collective will bring this delightful educational concert to children in the Pasadena area with a performance in the Spring of 2024. \nThis high-quality music programming for young children is a live musical-story time event. Children will meet musicians\, learn about basic music concepts\, interact with the narrator throughout the story and hear live music performed\, specifically written for the Click Clack Moosic program. \nThe program introduces one instrument from each instrument family (brass\, string\, piano\, percussion\, woodwind). Each character is represented by an instrument so the young audience can get to know each instrument through the character’s personality. Each character has a featured section to highlight what that instrument does best. This updated version of the classic programs like Peter and the Wolf covers more diverse styles of music including salza\, a ho down\, waltz\, and blues. \nThrough the story\, children learn about working together\, collective action\, and how one small voice can make a big difference. \n  \nPRE-CONCERT LEARNING PROGRAM \nOur primary goal with this first concert in the series is to engage young learners with an introduction to the instruments and learning about how music expresses emotion. The instrument petting zoo before the performance allows each child to see and touch instruments up close and interact with the musicians that make music through each instrument. \nAt the start of the program\, the narrator and conductor will lead the children through a series of exercises where they learn to recognize and name emotions through the tone of voice and word emphasis they hear. They then each get to try this themselves using their own voice. Then the program brings this concept to storytelling through music. \nWe will engage with young audiences in deep learning with the musical story. Young attendees will gain a firm understanding of the different instrument families and be able to recognize the nine instruments by ear. They will understand the role of the conductor and how different types of music express different moods and moments in the character’s journey. They will discover how music can be used to tell a story\, celebrate\, express emotions\, and bring people (or farm animals) together. \nABOUT THE KEY PROJECT PARTICIPANT  \nPhil Popham\, Music Director \nClick Clack Moosic Music Director Phil Popham is a co-founder of Helix Collective. He composed the music for and conducted the world premieres of his Click\, Clack\, Moosic children’s concerts with the West Michigan Symphony Orchestra.
