Our Daily Bread Ministries VOICES team has launched a campaign to help churches\, civic organizations\, and individuals learn and celebrate the holiday! VOICES has produced a documentary\, devotionals (print and digital options available)\, podcasts\, and an album to equip you with all you need to appreciate Juneteenth\, revealing how it’s a celebration of freedom and faith amid struggle. \nJuneteenth Day reflects dynamic truths about faith and freedom\, particularly relevant to the African American experience. The holiday was first celebrated in churches\, revealing a deep connection between faith and freedom. The Scriptures teach of Jubilee (Leviticus 25)\, the time prescribed for justice and freedom to be restored throughout Israel. Jesus\, in his inaugural sermon\, announced that his kingdom would consummate God’s kingdom of righteousness and justice\, through the church and throughout the world. When people are freed from injustice\, Earth becomes a little more like Heaven. \nThese resources offer an opportunity to tell the story of Juneteenth for those seeking to understand the holiday and find inspiration in its significance. Juneteenth is a story that highlights how hope has endured from 1865 to the present. In doing so\, it offers an important story for the discouraged and the hopeful\, Black and White\, skeptics and saints.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Laurie R. King discusses The Lantern’s Dance
DESCRIPTION:Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes\, hoping for a respite in the French countryside\, are instead caught up in a case that turns both bewildering and intensely personal. \nAfter their recent adventures in Transylvania\, Russell and Holmes look forward to spending time with Holmes’ son\, the famous artist Damian Adler\, and his family. But when they arrive at Damian’s house\, they discover that the Adlers have fled from a mysterious threat. \nHolmes rushes after Damian while Russell\, slowed down by a recent injury\, stays behind to search the empty house. In Damian’s studio\, she discovers four crates packed with memorabilia related to Holmes’ granduncle\, the artist Horace Vernet. It’s an odd mix of treasures and clutter\, including a tarnished silver lamp with a rotating shade: an antique yet sophisticated form of zoetrope\, fitted with strips of paper whose images dance with the lantern’s spin. \nIn the same crate is an old journal written in a nearly impenetrable code. Intrigued\, Russell sets about deciphering the intricate cryptograph\, slowly realizing that each entry is built around an image–the first of which is a child\, bundled into a carriage by an abductor\, watching her mother recede from view. \nRussell is troubled\, then entranced\, but each entry she decodes brings more questions. Who is the young Indian woman who created this elaborate puzzle? What does she have to do with Damian\, or the Vernets–or the threat hovering over the house? \nThe secrets of the past appear to be reaching into the present. And it seems increasingly urgent that Russell figure out how the journal and lantern are related to Damian–and possibly to Sherlock Holmes himself.
