SUMMARY:Vroman's: Local Author Day featuring Jared Seide and José L. Recio
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast.\nRegister for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/jared-seide-jose-recio \nJared Seide presents Where Compassion Begins\nCompassion is sometimes confused with empathy\, or even sympathy. It is neither\, though it includes some aspects of both. Compassion begins when we allow ourselves to really hear and attune to suffering\, that of others\, as well as ourselves. And hearing and perceiving this anguish\, we are moved to do something about it. What takes compassion beyond sympathy or empathy is that it includes action\, action that is considered\, skillful and beneficial.\nCouncil is a foundational practice that builds our capacity to perceive the experience of others and invites us to pay attention. When we listen differently to someone’s story\, without judging\, we create the conditions for compassion to arise. Council asks us to lean in\, to learn ways we can skillfully attend to the pain we recognize in ourselves and others\, and to do something helpful in response. This book is an invitation to build the muscle of compassion\, through exercises and practices that enhance our capacity to listen from the heart and\, in so doing\, take care of ourselves and those around us. \nJosé L. Recio presents Transitions\nTransitions is a book of mainstream fiction\, written in the tradition of the short stories classics. Like Joseph Conrad\, the author of “Transitions” put fictional characters in situations different from his own experiences but suitable to trigger the same or very similar set of emotions when dealing with those situations.

SUMMARY:Boston Court Pasadena: Hocket
DESCRIPTION:HOCKET: COMPOSER/PERFORMER\nOCT 30\, 8PM\n\n\nSarah Gibson and Thomas Kotcheff\, pianists \nHocket presents Composer/Performer\, a program featuring newly written works performed and written by some of Los Angeles’s most exciting composer/performers. \nIt takes a unique ability to compose music and then perform it for the world. This intimate relationship between music and musician furthers the artist’s self-expression and deepens the audience’s understanding. Violinist Cornelius Dufallo once said\, “you don’t really know a phrase until you really feel that you wrote it yourself.” \nThis concert is being presented for FREE as part of Boston Court’s commitment to make these awful 18 months just a little bit better. \n\nTHE PROGRAM\nThis program will feature the world premiere of two of these commissions by electric guitarist Alexander Elliott Miller and violinist Nick Bentz. Additionally the concert will feature works by Sarah Gibson\, Thomas Kotcheff\, and others. \nThis program is in conjunction with Hocket’s Composer/Performer Initiative\, a biennial commissioning project focused on cultivating new trios from composer/performers to write pieces that feature the commissioned composers on their instruments\, plus Hocket. \n\nTHE ARTISTS\nHocket is a cutting edge piano duo based in Los Angeles. Lauded as “brilliant” by Mark Swed in the Los Angeles Times and as an “adventurous young ensemble” by The New Yorker\, members Sarah Gibson and Thomas Kotcheff are both pianist-composers dedicated to commissioning and performing contemporary music. \nThey have performed in some of the most exciting festivals and venues across the country including The Bang on Can Summer Music Festival at MASS MoCA\, MATA Festival in New York City\, The Center for New Music in San Francisco\, the Carlsbad Music Festival\, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s “Noon to Midnight” Festival. Together\, they have premiered over one hundred chamber and solo works and have collaborated with the premier\, new music ensembles Eighth Blackbird and the Bang on a Can All-Stars. They have performed concerti with the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble\, USC Thornton Edge\, Oberlin Sinfonietta\, and Kaleidoscope Chamber Orchestra. HOCKET has received grants from the Presser Foundation and The Earle Brown Music Foundation and has been a selected artist in Firebird Ensemble’s Outstanding Young Artists Initiative and Eighth Blackbird’s Blackbird Creative Lab. HOCKET is a Piano Spheres core artist and a performing artist on the Schoenhut Piano Company Artist Roster. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Wil Haygood discusses Colorization: One Hundred Years of Black Films in a White World
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast.\nRegister for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: TBA \nThis unprecedented history of Black cinema examines 100 years of Black movies–from Gone with the Wind to Blaxploitation films to Black Panther–using the struggles and triumphs of the artists\, and the films themselves\, as a prism to explore Black culture\, civil rights\, and racism in America. From the acclaimed author of The Butler and Showdown. \nBeginning in 1915 with D. W. Griffith’s The Birth of a Nation–which glorified the Ku Klux Klan and became Hollywood’s first blockbuster–Wil Haygood gives us an incisive\, fascinating\, little-known history\, spanning more than a century\, of Black artists in the film business\, on-screen and behind the scenes. \nHe makes clear the effects of changing social realities and events on the business of making movies and on what was represented on the screen: from Jim Crow and segregation to white flight and interracial relationships\, from the assassination of Malcolm X\, to the O. J. Simpson trial\, to the Black Lives Matter movement. He considers the films themselves–including Imitation of Life\, Gone with the Wind\, Porgy and Bess\, the Blaxploitation films of the seventies\, Do The Right Thing\, 12 Years a Slave\, and Black Panther. And he brings to new light the careers and significance of a wide range of historic and contemporary figures: Hattie McDaniel\, Sidney Poitier\, Berry Gordy\, Alex Haley\, Spike Lee\, Billy Dee Willliams\, Richard Pryor\, Halle Berry\, Ava DuVernay\, and Jordan Peele\, among many others. \nAn important\, timely book\, Colorization gives us both an unprecedented history of Black cinema and a groundbreaking perspective on racism in modern America.
