SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Dana L. Davis discusses Roman and Jewel
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Please register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/ifwl6pqh \nIf Romeo and Juliet got the Hamilton treatment…who would play the leads? This vividly funny\, honest\, and charming romantic novel by Dana L. Davis is the story of a girl who thinks she has what it takes…and the world thinks so\, too. \nJerzie Jhames will do anything to land the lead role in Broadway’s hottest new show\, Roman and Jewel\, a Romeo and Juliet inspired hip-hopera featuring a diverse cast and modern twists on the play. But her hopes are crushed when she learns mega-star Cinny won the lead…and Jerzie is her understudy. \nFalling for male lead Zeppelin Reid is a terrible idea–especially once Jerzie learns Cinny wants him for herself. Star-crossed love always ends badly. But when a video of Jerzie and Zepp practicing goes viral and the entire world weighs in on who should play Jewel\, Jerzie learns that while the price of fame is high\, friendship\, family\, and love are priceless. (Inkyard Press) \nDana L. Davis is a novelist and Hollywood actress with previous series regular roles as: Carmen Phillips on TNT’s Franklin and Bash and modern day mimic Monica Dawson on NBC’s cult series Heroes. She currently stars on the animated series Star Vs. the Forces of Evil\, Craig of the Creek\, and She-Ra. She made her film debut in Coach Carter with Samuel Jackson. In addition to her work on screen\, Dana has become a motivational speaker for teens. Her stirring assemblies empower and encourage youth\, helping them to redefine what it means to win and lose. She volunteers for nonprofits like Empowering Lives International\, an organization which provides training\, resources\, and encouragement to underprivileged East African children. Dana also created her own nonprofit organization Culture For Kids\, LA\, an organization which gifts inner city children tickets and transportation to see performing arts shows around the Los Angeles area. \nDr. Gregory Schwartz grew up in southern California\, the son of two former Nebraska farmers. He received his degree in Geography\, graduating near the top of his class from UC Berkeley and his Masters of Science in Geography and Sociology from the University of Wisconsin\, Madison. He eventually returned to graduate school and completed his PhD in Geography (political ecology) at the University of Texas\, Austin. His research focused on “payment for ecosystem services”  in Costa Rica where he consulted President Luis Solis and his cabinet about national-level environmental policies. Having taught for three years at California State University\, Northridge\, and currently at Laney College\, Greg is also a frequent podcast contributor and appears in the Netflix original series\, Last Chance U\, Season 5. Greg\, a.k.a. the planet doctor\, is an environmental activist\, a competitive track and field athlete\, and he eats a vegan\, organic diet. One of his true joys is zipping around town with his wife and two sons in their electric car.

DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Please register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot. \nEVENT LINK: www.crowdcast.io/e/outside-inside \nFrom Caldecott honoree LeUyen Pham\, Outside\, Inside is a moving picture book celebrating essential workers and the community coming together to face the challenges of the global COVID-19 pandemic. \nSomething strange happened on an unremarkable day just before the season changed. \nEverybody who was outside . . . \n. . . went inside. \nOutside\, it was quieter\, wilder\, and different. Inside\, we laughed\, we cried\, and we grew. \nWe remembered to protect the ones we love and love the ones who protect us. \nWhile the world changed outside\, we became stronger on the inside and believed that someday soon spring would come again. (Roaring Brook Press) \nLeUyen Pham worked in animation before turning to children’s books. She wrote and illustrated Big Sister\, Little Sister and The Bear Who Wasn’t There\, and is the illustrator of numerous other picture books. SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Alexi Pappas in conversation with Tara Schuster\,
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Please register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/q9peqfci \nWhen “Renaissance runner” ( New York Times) Alexi Pappas–Olympic athlete\, actress\, filmmaker\, and writer–was four years old\, her mother died by suicide\, drastically altering the course of Pappas’s life and setting her on a search for female role models. When her father signed his bereaved daughter up for sports teams as a way to keep her busy\, female athletes became the first women Pappas looked up to\, and her Olympic dream was born. At the same time\, Pappas had big creative dreams\, too: She wanted to make movies\, write\, and act. Despite setbacks and hardships\, Pappas refused to pick just one lane. She put in a tremendous amount of hard work and wouldn’t let anything stand in her way until she achieved all of her dreams\, however unrelated they may seem to outsiders. In a single year\, 2016\, she made her Olympic debut as a distance runner and wrote\, directed\, and starred in her first feature film. \nBut great highs are often accompanied by deep lows; with joy comes sorrow. In Bravey\, Pappas fearlessly and honestly shares her battle with post-Olympic depression and describes how she emerged on the other side as a thriving and self-actualized woman. Unflinching\, exuberant\, and always entertaining\, Bravey showcases Pappas’s signature\, charming voice as she reflects upon the touchstone moments in her life and the lessons that have powered her career as both an athlete and an artist–foremost among them\, how to be brave. \nPappas’s experiences reveal how we can all overcome hardship\, befriend pain\, celebrate victory\, relish the loyalty found in teammates\, and claim joy. In short: how every one of us can become a bravey. (Dial Press) \nAlexi Pappas is an award-winning writer\, filmmaker\, and Olympic athlete. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times\, Runner’s World\, Women’s Running\, Sports Illustrated\, The Atlantic\, and Outside\, among other publications\, and she has been profiled in The New York Times\, Sports Illustrated\, New York\, and Rolling Stone. Pappas co-wrote\, co-directed\, and starred in the feature film Tracktown with Rachel Dratch and Andy Buckley. Most recently\, she co-wrote and starred alongside Nick Kroll in Olympic Dreams\, the first non-documentary-style movie to ever be filmed at the Olympic Games. A Greek American\, Pappas holds the Greek national record in the 10\,000-meters and competed for Greece in the 2016 Olympics. She lives in Los Angeles\, California. \nTara Schuster served as Vice President of Talent and Development at Comedy Central where she was the Executive in Charge of the Emmy® and Peabody Award-winning Key & Peele\, the Emmy® Award winning @Midnight\, and Lights Out with David Spade. For her work on Key & Peele\, Jordan Peele remarked that Schuster is “ahead of her time…she sees the future a little bit.” Her book\, Buy Yourself The F*cking Lilies\, debuted as the #1 New Release in Humor Essays and Self-Help on both Audible and Kindle. InStyle\, People Magazine\, Cosmopolitan\, Goodreads\, BuzzFeed\, Goop\, and many others have chosen Buy Yourself The F*cking Lilies as one of the best new books of 2020.

Perfect for fans of The Book with No Pictures. \nWait–are you reading this book? Even though the cover asked you not to? \nWell\, if you’re going to read it\, then you’ll have to follow the rules\, or you’re going to have WAY too much fun. And you don’t want to have FUN\, do you? DO YOU?! \nThat’s what I thought. So definitely\, positively\, DO NOT read this book! \nJoin along for zany antics\, silly sounds\, and endless fun in this breaks-the-fourth-wall book that will have readers coming back time and time again–regardless of what the title says. (Philomel Books) \nDeanna Kizis is very silly and would definitely read a book that said she shouldn’t. Her favorite things include pretending her daughter’s toothbrush can talk\, dipping warm chocolate cookies in cold milk\, and throwing dance parties with the dog. Deanna is so silly\, in fact\, that she once went to the grocery story wearing two different shoes by mistake\, and she always makes up silly songs that her kid thinks are kinda weird — but funny! So definitely DO NOT write to Deanna Kizis at hello@deannakizis.com so she can send you something kinda silly. And absolutely DO NOT follow her on Instagram\, @dkizis\, where you can see more of the silly stuff she does. And no matter what — please don’t read her book! \nSam Boughton (samboughton.co.uk) is an award-winning British artist and illustrator with degrees in illustration from Bristol UWE and the Cambridge School of Art. SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Matt Coyle discusses Blind Vigil
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Please register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/zkw0xxxy \nA friend arrested for murder. A vicious killer lurking in the shadows. A world of darkness. \nBlinded by a gunshot wound to the face while working as a private investigator nine months ago\, Rick Cahill is now sure of only one thing: he has to start a new life and leave his old one behind. \nHe’s still trying to figure out what that life is when his onetime partner\, Moira MacFarlane\, asks for his help on a case she’s taken for Rick’s former best friend. The case is simple and Moira only needs Rick for one interview\, but Rick is wary of waking sleeping demons. \nUltimately\, he goes against his gut and takes the case which quickly turns deadly. Rick’s old compulsion of finding the truth no matter the cost–the same compulsion that cost him his eyesight and almost his life–battles against his desire to escape his past. \nThe stakes are raised when Rick’s friend is implicated in murder and needs his help. Can he help the friend he no longer trusts while questioning his own lessened capabilities? His life depends on the answer as a shadowy killer lurks in the darkness. (Oceanview Publishing) \nMatt Coyle is the award-winning author of the best-selling Rick Cahill crime novels. He knew he wanted to be a crime writer when he was fourteen and his father gave him the simple art of murder by Raymond Chandler. But his foray into crime fiction was delayed for thirty years as he spent time managing a restaurant\, selling golf clubs for various golf companies\, and in national sales for a sports licensing company. Matt lives in San Diego with his yellow Lab\, Angus\, where he is writing his eighth crime novel. \nEditor Gary Phillips is a critically acclaimed author of mystery and graphic novels (The Darker Mask\, Bangers\, Violent Spring). Raised in South Central Los Angeles\, Phillips draws on his experiences from anti-police abuse community organizing and anti-apartheid activism in his work. He was the chair of the Eleanor Taylor Bland Crime Fiction Writers of Color committee\, and was president of the Private Eye Writers of America.
