SUMMARY:Vroman's: Elizabeth Nyamayaro discusses I Am a Girl from Africa
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/7iit4ol9 \nThe inspiring journey of a girl from Africa whose near-death experience sparked a dream that changed the world. \nWhen severe draught hit her village in Zimbabwe\, Elizabeth\, then eight\, had no idea that this moment of utter devastation would come to define her life purpose. Unable to move from hunger\, she encountered a United Nations aid worker who gave her a bowl of warm porridge and saved her life. This transformative moment inspired Elizabeth to become a humanitarian\, and she vowed to dedicate her life to giving back to her community\, her continent\, and the world. \nGrounded by the African concept of ubuntu–“I am because we are”– I Am a Girl from Africa charts Elizabeth’s quest in pursuit of her dream from the small village of Goromonzi to Harare\, London\, New York\, and beyond\, where she eventually became a Senior Advisor at the United Nations and launched HeForShe\, one of the world’s largest global solidarity movements for gender equality. For over two decades\, Elizabeth has been instrumental in creating change in communities all around the world; uplifting the lives of others\, just as her life was once uplifted. The memoir brings to vivid life one extraordinary woman’s story of persevering through incredible odds and finding her true calling–while delivering an important message of hope and empowerment in a time when we need it most. SUMMARY:Vroman's: Sarah Dass discusses Where the Rhythm Takes You
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/7z34nv8m \nInspired by Jane Austen’s Persuasion\, Where the Rhythm Takes You is a romantic\, mesmerizing novel of first love and second chances. \nSeventeen-year-old Reyna has spent most of her life at the Plumeria\, her family’s gorgeous seaside resort in Tobago. But what once seemed like paradise is starting to feel more like purgatory. It’s been two years since Reyna’s mother passed away\, two years since Aiden–her childhood best friend\, first kiss\, first love\, first everything–left the island to pursue his music dreams. \nReyna’s friends are all planning their futures and heading abroad. Even Daddy seems to want to move on\, leaving her to try to keep the Plumeria running. \nAnd that’s when Aiden comes roaring back into her life–as a VIP guest at the resort. \nAiden is now one-third of DJ Bacchanal–the latest\, hottest music group on the scene. While Reyna has stayed exactly where he left her\, Aiden has returned to Tobago with his Grammy-nominated band and two gorgeous LA socialites. And he may (or may not be) dating one of them… (Balzer & Bray/Harperteen) \nSarah Dass was born in Trinidad but has lived in Tobago since she was two years old. She graduated from University College London. She now works in Tobago as an office administrator by day and writes stories about the Caribbean by night. When she’s not writing\, she’s reading or taking walks with her dachshund\, named Stella. Sarah’s debut novel is inspired by her childhood\, spent in a seaside hotel. \nMaika Moulite is a Miami native and the daughter of Haitian immigrants. She earned a bachelor’s in marketing from Florida State University and an MBA from the University of Miami. When she’s not using her digital prowess to help nonprofits and major organizations tell their stories online\, she’s sharpening her skills as a PhD student at Howard University’s Communication\, Culture and Media Studies program. Her research focuses on representation in media and its impact on marginalized groups. She’s the eldest of four sisters and loves young adult novels\, fierce female leads\, and laughing. \nMaritza Moulite graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor’s in women’s studies and the University of Southern California with a master’s in journalism. She’s worked in various capacities for NBC News\, CNN\, and USA TODAY. Maritza is a PhD student at the University of Pennsylvania exploring ways to improve literacy in under-resourced communities after being inspired to study education from her time as a literacy tutor and pre-k teacher assistant. Her favorite song is “September” by Earth\, Wind & Fire.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Anna Sale discusses Let’s Talk About Hard Things
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/2vqde0wc \nAnna Sale wants you to have that conversation. You know the one. The one that you’ve been avoiding or putting off\, maybe for years. The one that you’ve thought “they’ll never understand” or “do I really want to bring that up?” or “it’s not going to go well\, so why even try?” \nSale is the founder and host of WNYC’s popular\, award-winning podcast Death\, Sex\, & Money\, or as the New York Times dubbed her\, “a therapist at happy hour.” She and her guests have direct and thought-provoking conversations\, discussing topics that most of us are too squeamish\, polite\, or nervous to bring up. But Sale argues that we all experience these hard things\, and by not talking to one another\, we cut ourselves off\, leading us to feel isolated and disconnected from the people who can help us most. \nIn Let’s Talk About Hard Things\, Sale uses the best of what she’s learned from her podcast to reveal that when we have the courage to talk about hard things\, we learn about ourselves\, others\, and the world that we make together. Diving into five of the most fraught conversation topics–death\, sex\, money\, family\, and identity–she moves between memoir\, fascinating snapshots of a variety of Americans opening up about their lives\, and expert opinions to show why having tough conversations is important and how to do them in a thoughtful and generous way. She uncovers that listening may be the most important part of a tough conversation\, that the end goal should be understanding without the pressure of reconciliation\, and that there are some things that words can’t fix (and why that’s actually okay). \nTouching\, personal\, and inspiring\, Let’s Talk About Hard Things is a profound meditation on why communication can connect us instead of divide us and how we can all do it better. SUMMARY:Vroman's: Gian Sardar discusses Take What You Can Carry
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/xfabifhg \nAn aspiring photographer follows her dreams and faces her fears in a poignant novel about finding beauty\, promise\, and love amid the chaos of war-torn Kurdistan. \nIt’s 1979. Olivia Murray\, a secretary at a Los Angeles newspaper\, is determined to become a photojournalist and make a difference with her work. When opportunity arrives\, she seizes it\, accompanying her Kurdish boyfriend\, Delan\, to northern Iraq for a family wedding\, hoping to capture an image that lands her a job in the photo department. More important\, though\, the trip is a chance to understand Delan’s childhood and bridge the differences of their pasts. Yet when the return home proves less safe than Delan believed\, Olivia is confronted with a reality she had not expected\, and is awakened to the dangers of a town patrolled by Iraqi military under curfew and constant threat. \nBut in this world torn apart by war\, there are intoxicating sights and scents\, Delan’s loving family\, innocence not yet compromised\, and small acts of kindness that flourish unexpectedly. All of it will be tested when Olivia captures a shattering\, tragic moment on film\, one that upends all their lives and proves that true bravery begins with an open heart. (Lake Union Publishing) \n“Set forth in vivid\, propulsive writing\, Take What You Can Carry is a love story that is also a love song to the Kurdish people and an adventure tale that balances the risks of ambition with the costs of responsibility. Blending romance and near history\, Gian Sardar has produced a tale filled with indelible images and characters one comes to know as family. A rich and satisfying read.” —Meg Howrey\, author of The Wanderers

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Catherine McKenzie discusses Six Weeks to Live
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/patxd893 \nJennifer Barnes never expected the shocking news she received at a routine doctor’s appointment: she has a terminal brain tumor–and only six weeks left to live. \nWhile stunned by the diagnosis\, the forty-eight-year-old mother decides to spend what little time she has left with her family–her adult triplets and twin grandsons–close by her side. But when she realizes she was possibly poisoned a year earlier\, she’s determined to discover who might have tried to get rid of her before she’s gone for good. \nSeparated from her husband and with a contentious divorce in progress\, Jennifer focuses her suspicions on her soon-to-be ex. Meanwhile\, her daughters are each processing the news differently. Calm medical student Emily is there for whatever Jennifer needs. Moody scientist Aline\, who keeps her mother at arm’s length\, nonetheless agrees to help with the investigation. Even imprudent Miranda\, who has recently had to move back home\, is being unusually solicitous. \nBut with her daughters doubting her campaign against their father\, Jennifer can’t help but wonder if the poisoning is all in her head–or if there’s someone else who wanted her dead. (Atria Books) \nCatherine McKenzie was born and raised in Montreal\, Canada. A graduate of McGill in History and Law\, Catherine practiced law for twenty years before leaving the practice to write full time. An avid runner\, skier and tennis player\, she’s the author of numerous bestsellers including HIDDEN\, FRACTURED\, THE GOOD LIAR and I’LL NEVER TELL. Her works have been translated into multiple languages and THE GOOD LIAR\, YOU CAN’T CATCH ME and I’LL NEVER TELL have all been optioned for development into television series. \nRachel Stuhler hails from Rochester\, NY. After working for several years as a script supervisor on film sets\, Rachel sold her first scripts to Lifetime and The Hallmark Channel. In the years since\, Rachel has continued to work in television and published novel “Absolutely True Lies” with Simon & Schuster/Touchstone. Her byline has appeared in publications from Cosmopolitan to Newsweek. Rachel is also a fierce advocate for maternal health\, lobbying Congress and working to reduce the maternal mortality rate in the United States and beyond. Rachel is currently plotting her next move in world domination\, or writing about world domination\, which is more fun and a lot less work.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Ron White discusses Lincoln in Private: What His Most Personal Reflections Tell Us about Our Greatest President
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/5fn91sll \nA deeply private man\, shut off even to those who worked closely with him\, Abraham Lincoln often captured “his best thoughts\,” as he called them\, in short notes to himself. He would work out his personal stances on the biggest issues of the day\, never expecting anyone to see these frank\, unpolished pieces of writing\, which he’d then keep close at hand\, in desk drawers and even in his top hat. The profound importance of these notes has been overlooked\, because the originals are scattered across several different archives and have never before been brought together and examined as a coherent whole. \nNow\, renowned Lincoln historian Ronald C. White walks readers through twelve of Lincoln’s most important private notes\, showcasing our greatest president’s brilliance and empathy\, but also his very human anxieties and ambitions. We look over Lincoln’s shoulder as he grapples with the problem of slavery\, attempting to find convincing rebuttals to those who supported the evil institution (“As I would not be a slave\, so I would not be a master. This expresses my idea of democracy.”); prepares for his historic debates with Stephen Douglas; expresses his private feelings after a defeated bid for a Senate seat (“With me\, the race of ambition has been a failure–a flat failure”); voices his concerns about the new Republican Party’s long-term prospects; develops an argument for national unity amidst a secession crisis that would ultimately rend the nation in two; and\, for a president many have viewed as not religious\, develops a sophisticated theological reflection in the midst of the Civil War (“it is quite possible that God’s purpose is something different from the purpose of either party”). Additionally\, in a historic first\, all 111 Lincoln notes are transcribed in the appendix\, a gift to scholars and Lincoln buffs alike. \nThese are notes Lincoln never expected anyone to read\, put into context by a writer who has spent his career studying Lincoln’s life and words. The result is a rare glimpse into the mind and soul of one of our nation’s most important figures. (Random House)

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Nicholas Schmidle\, in conversation with Buzz Bissinger
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/s4tl8u4n \nIn the spirit of The Right Stuff\, updated for the 21st century\, Test Gods is an epic story about extreme bravery and sacrifice\, about the thin line between lunacy and genius. Most of all\, it is a story about the pursuit of meaning in our lives–and the fulfillment of our dreams. \nWorking from exclusive inside reporting\, New Yorker writer Nicholas Schmidle tells the remarkable story of the test pilots\, engineers\, and visionaries behind Virgin Galactic’s campaign to build a space tourism company. Schmidle follows a handful of characters–Mark Stucky\, Virgin’s lead test pilot; Richard Branson\, the eccentric billionaire funding the venture; Mike Moses\, the grounded\, unflappable president; Mike Alsbury\, the test pilot killed in a fatal crash; and others–through personal and professional dramas\, in pursuit of their collective goal: to make space tourism a reality. \nAlong the way\, Schmidle weaves his relationship with his father–a former fighter pilot and decorated war hero–into the tragedies and triumphs that Branson’s team confronts out in the Mojave desert as they design\, build\, and test-fly their private rocket ship. Gripping and novelistic\, Test Gods leads us\, through human drama\, into a previously unseen world–and beyond. (Henry Holt & Co.) \n“It’s hard to know where to begin: Test Gods is unique\, fascinating\, compulsively readable\, brilliantly reported with unprecedented access\, a kick-ass adventure story of the last of the great swashbucklers addicted to speed and altitude. It is a journey unlike any I have ever read\, as pulsating as it is poignant and personal. What makes a man routinely risk his life for a living umpteen miles above the clouds? What does he leave behind on earth? Cosmic questions that Schmidle answers with elegance and beauty and pace. Just strap yourself in and get ready for one helluva ride.”—Buzz Bissinger\, author of Friday Night Lights

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Charles Seife discusses Hawking Hawking: The Selling of a Scientific Celebrity
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/tzzkxy76 \nStephen Hawking was widely recognized as the world’s best physicist and even the most brilliant man alive-but what if his true talent was self-promotion? \nWhen Stephen Hawking died\, he was widely recognized as the world’s best physicist\, and even its smartest person. \nHe was neither. \nIn Hawking Hawking\, science journalist Charles Seife explores how Stephen Hawking came to be thought of as humanity’s greatest genius. Hawking spent his career grappling with deep questions in physics\, but his renown didn’t rest on his science. He was a master of self-promotion\, hosting parties for time travelers\, declaring victory over problems he had not solved\, and wooing billionaires. Confined to a wheelchair and physically dependent on a cadre of devotees\, Hawking still managed to captivate the people around him–and use them for his own purposes. \nA brilliant exposé and powerful biography\, Hawking Hawking uncovers the authentic Hawking buried underneath the fake. It is the story of a man whose brilliance in physics was matched by his genius for building his own myth. (Basic Books) \nCharles Seife is a professor of journalism at NYU’s Arthur L. Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/kvspvazt \nEnough About Me equips you with practical tools to find meaning and compassion in even the smallest of everyday choices. \nWhat if your path to a more successful\, healthy\, and satisfying life is actually not about you? \nWhen his father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease\, Richard Lui did something tough. The award-winning news anchor decided to set aside his growing career to care for family. Selflessness\, however\, did not come easily. So\, Richard set out to explore why he struggled. \nIn every decision\, big and small\, Lui discovered hidden opportunities to put others ahead of himself. Similar to training physical muscles\, we must train our decision-making muscles to choose others over ourselves in order to have unexpected smiles and renewed balance in our lives. \nFrom a journalist’s point of view\, he digs into and shares stories from his seven-year “selfless” exploration and ultimately shares how small choices toward selflessness are not a compromise\, but instead a way to a more satisfying life. Choice by choice\, step by step\, the path to a more satisfying and fulfilling journey is right here in the people around us. (Zondervan) \nRichard Lui has more than 30 years in television\, film\, technology\, and business. Currently working for MSNBC / NBC News and previously with CNN Worldwide\, he is a team Emmy and Peabody winning journalist. SUMMARY:Vroman's: Chris Gardner discusses Permission to Dream
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINKL: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/akcjsjrl \nOn a winter’s day\, Chris Gardner set off with his nine-year-old granddaughter Brooke to find the harmonica of her dreams. The search sends them North “beyond the wall” into a foreboding Chicago neighborhood and\, soon\, on a harrowing adventure that will change both of their lives–and ours. \nChris is still mourning the loss of his girlfriend to brain cancer. Her question haunts him: “Now that we know how short life can be\, what will you do with the time you have left?” After five years\, he feels an urgency–what he calls\, “Atomic Time” in which every second counts–to find an answer\, but is stuck. Even while giving Brooke permission to aspire to one day become President of the United States\, he knows it’s time to reclaim his own permission to dream. \nLost\, Chris and his granddaughter board a bus\, reminding him of earlier rides through dark times when dreams of a better life kept him alive. As the two wind through a changing cityscape\, Chris reflects on past lessons that offer powerful guidance for dreaming your way to monumental success. \nAt its heart\, this book lays out a blueprint for building a dream-come-true life–even during uncertainty. Gardner delivers the secrets to achieving a prosperous career–from a method for identifying your ultimate dream to a playbook for becoming world class at it. His tools include the “new 3 R’s”–or the Rep\, the Rap and the Rolodex–which reveal how to earn a stellar reputation\, develop a rap for marketing yourself\, and amass a Rolodex of rewarding relationships. No matter how much wealth you achieve\, Chris notes\, true success comes from enriching the lives of others–so all can still have access to the American Dream. \nToward the end\, Brooke observes that in Atomic Time it’s never too late for anyone to reinvent themselves and change their fortune. Chris\, hearing her\, realizes what his next pursuit will be–to go back to high school and give permission to dream to the next generation of problem solvers and change makers. \nA true fable\, Permission to Dream is a timeless and timely manifesto for turning dreams into action–beginning right now. (Amistad Press) \nChris Gardner is the Chief Executive of Gardner Rich & Company\, a multimillion-dollar brokerage with offices in New York\, Chicago\, and San Francisco. An avid philanthropist and motivational speaker\, Gardner is committed to many organizations—particularly those related to education—and was recently the recipient of the “Father of the Year Award” from the National Fatherhood Initiative. A Milwaukee native\, Gardner has two children and resides in Chicago and New York.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Andrew Morton discusses Elizabeth & Margaret: The Intimate World of the Windsor Sisters
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/0suj0aug  \nThey were the closest of sisters and the best of friends. But when\, in a quixotic twist of fate\, their uncle Edward Vlll decided to abdicate the throne\, the dynamic between Elizabeth and Margaret was dramatically altered. Forever more Margaret would have to curtsey to the sister she called ‘Lillibet.’ And bow to her wishes.  Elizabeth would always look upon her younger sister’s antics with a kind of stoical amusement\, but Margaret’s struggle to find a place and position inside the royal system–and her fraught relationship with its expectations–was often a source of tension. Famously\, the Queen had to inform Margaret that the Church and government would not countenance her marrying a divorcee\, Group Captain Peter Townsend\, forcing Margaret to choose between keeping her title and royal allowances or her divorcee lover. \nFrom the idyll of their cloistered early life\, through their hidden war-time lives\, into the divergent paths they took following their father’s death and Elizabeth’s ascension to the throne\, this book explores their relationship over the years. Andrew Morton’s latest biography offers unique insight into these two drastically different sisters–one resigned to duty and responsibility\, the other resistant to it–and the lasting impact they have had on the Crown\, the royal family\, and the ways it adapted to the changing mores of the 20th century. (Grand Central Publishing) \nAndrew Morton studied history at the University of Sussex\, England\, with a focus on aristocracy and the 1930s. Morton has written extensively on celebrity including biographies of Tom Cruise\, Angelina Jolie\, and Madonna\, as well as the British royal family. His #1 New York Times bestselling biography Diana: Her True Story won international acclaim\, described by critics as a “modern classic” and “the closest we will ever come to her autobiography.” \nDiana Nixon is a USA Today & International Bestselling Author who writes sweet and spicy romance reads. A book addict and a Master of Law in the past\, she knows how to weave plots that will keep you hooked from start to finish. He fills the pages with all the things and people he dislikes . . . \nNext thing he knows\, he’s wandering an anti-world\, one in which everything and everyone familiar is gone. Or are they? His sister soon reappears–but she’s only four inches tall. A tiny talking house with wings looks strangely familiar\, as does the mysterious half-invisible boy who seems to think that he and Mickey are best buds. The boy persuades Mickey to go find the Bubble Gum King–the king\, who resides at the top of a mountain\, is the only one who might be able help Mickey fix the mess he’s made. \nFull of humor and surprise\, and slyly meaningful\, this is a Wizard of Oz for today’s generation–a fantastical quest for comfort and belonging that will resonate with many\, many readers.  (Dial Books) \nRaphael Simon is an author who lives in Pasadena\, CA\, with his husband and twin daughters. He is definitely not the alter ego of infamously anonymous author Pseudonymous Bosch\, writer of the New York Times bestselling Secret Series and the Bad Books. \nAdam Gidwitz is the bestselling author of A Tale Dark and Grimm\, In A Glass Grimmly\, and The Grimm Conclusion\, as well as The Empire Strikes Back: So You Want To Be  A Jedi?\, Newbery Honored novel The Inquisitor’s Tale and brand new series\, The Unicorn Rescue Society. SUMMARY:Vroman's: Courtney Zoffness\, in conversation with Edan Lepucki\, discusses Spilt Milk
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/yatxjin4 \nWhat role does a mother play in raising thoughtful\, generous children? In her literary debut\, internationally award-winning writer Courtney Zoffness considers what we inherit from generations past–biologically\, culturally\, spiritually–and what we pass on to our children. Spilt Milk is an intimate\, bracing\, and beautiful exploration of vulnerability and culpability. Zoffness relives her childhood anxiety disorder as she witnesses it manifest in her firstborn; endures brazen sexual advances by a student in her class; grapples with the implications of her young son’s cop obsession; and challenges her Jewish faith. Where is the line between privacy and secrecy? How do the stories we tell inform who we become? These powerful\, dynamic essays herald a vital new voice. (McSweeney’s) \nCourtney Zoffness won the Sunday Times Short Story Award\, an Emerging Writers Fellowship from the Center for Fiction\, residency fellowships from the MacDowell Colony\, and the Susan Atefat Prize in Creative Nonfiction from Arts & Letters. SUMMARY:Vroman's: Chris Whitaker discusses We Begin at the End
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/33jfivrn \nThere are two kinds of families: the ones we are born into and the ones we create. \nWalk has never left the coastal California town where he grew up. He may have become the chief of police\, but he’s still trying to heal the old wound of having given the testimony that sent his best friend\, Vincent King\, to prison decades before. Now\, thirty years later\, Vincent is being released. \nDuchess is a thirteen-year-old self-proclaimed outlaw. Her mother\, Star\, grew up with Walk and Vincent. Walk is in overdrive trying to protect them\, but Vincent and Star seem bent on sliding deeper into self-destruction. Star always burned bright\, but recently that light has dimmed\, leaving Duchess to parent not only her mother but her five-year-old brother. At school the other kids make fun of Duchess–her clothes are torn\, her hair a mess. But let them throw their sticks\, because she’ll throw stones. Rules are for other people. She’s just trying to survive and keep her family together. \nA fortysomething-year-old sheriff and a thirteen-year-old girl may not seem to have a lot in common. But they both have come to expect that people will disappoint you\, loved ones will leave you\, and if you open your heart it will be broken. So when trouble arrives with Vincent King\, Walk and Duchess find they will be unable to do anything but usher it in\, arms wide closed. \nChris Whitaker has written an extraordinary novel about people who deserve so much more than life serves them. At times devastating\, with flashes of humor and hope throughout\, it is ultimately an inspiring tale of how the human spirit prevails and how\, in the end\, love–in all its different guises–wins. (Henry Holt & Company) \nChris Whitaker lives in the United Kingdom with his wife and three young children. When not writing he works part-time at a local library\, where he gets to surround himself with books.

DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/8q04o6bt \nIn Kathy Fiscus: A Tragedy that Transfixed the Nation historian William Deverell tells the heartbreaking story of a young girl trapped in a well–a story that transfixed the nation in what would become the first live\, breaking-news TV spectacle in history. \nAt dusk on a spring evening in 1949\, a three-year old girl fell down an abandoned well shaft in the backyard of her family’s home in Southern California. Across more than two full days of a fevered rescue attempt\, the fate of Kathy Fiscus remained unknown. Thousands of concerned Southern Californians rushed to the scene. Jockeys hurried over from the nearby racetracks\, offering to be sent down the well after Kathy. 20th Century Fox sent over the studio’s klieg lights to illuminate the scene. Rescue workers-ditch diggers\, miners\, cesspool laborers\, World War II veterans-dug and bored holes deep into the aquifer below\, hoping to tunnel across to the old well shaft that the little girl had somehow tumbled down. \nThe region\, the nation\, and the world watched and listened to every moment of the rescue attempt by way of radio\, newsreel footage\, and wire service reporting. They also watched live television. Because of the well’s proximity to the radio towers on nearby Mount Wilson\, the rescue attempt because the first breaking-news event to be broadcast live on television. The Kathy Fiscus event invented reality television and proved that real-time television news broadcasting could work and could transfix the public. (Angel City Press) \nWilliam Deverell is professor of history and director of the Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West at the University of Southern California. He is the author of numerous studies of the nineteenth- and twentieth-century American West\, including Whitewashed Adobe: The Rise of Los Angeles and the Remaking of Its Mexican Past. \nRobin Abcarian is an opinion columnist at the Los Angeles Times. Richard Kasparov was handsome and charismatic; his younger associate\, Jerry Schneiderman\, brilliant and nerdy. When the pair hired a veteran contractor to oversee construction\, the space planning firm they operated out of a hip mansion in LA’s Miracle Mile district appeared poised to transform the boundless skyline into their jackpot. \nAfter the promising team imploded\, however\, the orderly lines on their blueprints succumbed to treachery and secrets. To get even\, one of the ex-partners launched a murder-for-profit corporation using\, among other peculiar sorts\, a bantam-sized epileptic with a deadeye shot and a cross-dressing sidekick. The hapless criminals required a comical number of attempts to execute their first target. Once they did\, on a rainy night in the San Fernando Valley\, the surviving founder of Space Matters was thrown into a pressure cooker existence out of a Coen Brothers movie. Threatened for money he didn’t have\, he donned a disguise\, survived a heart-pounding encounter at the La Brea Tar Pits\, and relied on an ex-Israeli mercenary for protection. In the end\, he had to outfox a glowering murderer\, while asking if you can ever really know anyone in a town where dirty deals send men to their graves. \nIn The Darkest Glare\, Chip Jacobs recounts a spectacular\, noir-ish\, true-crime saga from one of the deadliest eras in American history. You’ll never gaze out windows into the dark again. (Rare Bid Books) \nChip Jacobs is a bestselling author and journalist. Kelly. He has also contributed pieces to anthologies\, among them the bestselling Los Angeles in the 1970s: Weird Scenes Inside the Goldmine and Go Further: Literary Appreciation of Power Pop. DESCRIPTION:This virtual event is ticketed. (Scroll down to purchase tickets) \nLuvvie Ajayi Jones is known for her trademark wit\, warmth\, and perpetual truth-telling. But even she’s been challenged by the enemy of progress known as fear. She was once afraid to call herself a writer\, and nearly skipped out on doing a TED talk that changed her life because of imposter syndrome. As she shares in Professional Troublemaker\, she’s not alone. \nWe’re all afraid. We’re afraid of asking for what we want because we’re afraid of hearing no. We’re afraid of being different\, of being too much or not enough. We’re afraid of leaving behind the known for the unknown. But in order to do the things that will truly\, meaningfully change our lives\, we have to become professional troublemakers: people who are committed to not letting fear talk them out of the things they need to do or say to live free. \nWith humor and honesty\, and guided by the influence of her professional troublemaking Nigerian grandmother\, Funmilayo Faloyin\, Luvvie walks us through what we must get right within ourselves before we can do the things that scare us; how to use our voice for a greater good; and how to put movement to the voice we’ve been silencing–because truth-telling is a muscle. \nThe point is not to be fearless\, but to know we are afraid and charge forward regardless. It is to recognize that the things we must do are more significant than our fears. This book is about how to live boldly in spite of all the reasons we have to cower. Let’s go! (Penguin Life) \nThis event ticket includes a signed hardcover copy of Professional Troublemaker along with a “Judgey Pop”\, as well as online access to the event for your household. You will receive a link and password to attend the Crowdcast event on the afternoon of Tuesday\, March 2nd. \nQuestions? Email us at email@vromansbookstore.com
