But a Black man with cops at the door knows to be afraid. \nThe last thing he expects to hear is that his son Isiah has been murdered\, along with Isiah’s white husband\, Derek. Ike had never fully accepted his son but is devastated by his loss. \nDerek’s father Buddy Lee was almost as ashamed of Derek for being gay as Derek was ashamed his father was a criminal. Buddy Lee still has contacts in the underworld\, though\, and he wants to know who killed his boy. \nIke and Buddy Lee\, two ex-cons with little else in common other than a criminal past and a love for their dead sons\, band together in their desperate desire for revenge. In their quest to do better for their sons in death than they did in life\, hardened men Ike and Buddy Lee will confront their own prejudices about their sons and each other\, as they rain down vengeance upon those who hurt their boys. \nProvocative and fast-paced\, S. A. Cosby’s Razorblade Tears is a story of bloody retribution\, heartfelt change – and maybe even redemption. (Flatiron Books)

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Willa C. Richards\, in conversation with Chia-Chia Lin
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/mko0dop6  \nIn the summer of 1991\, a teenage girl named Dee McBride vanished in the city of Milwaukee. Nearly thirty years later\, her sister\, Peg\, is still haunted by her sister’s disappearance. Their mother\, on her deathbed\, is desperate to find out what happened to Dee so the family hires a psychic to help find Dee’s body and bring them some semblance of peace. \nThe appearance of the psychic plunges Peg back to the past\, to those final carefree months when she last saw Dee–the summer the Journal Sentinel called “the deadliest . . . in the history of Milwaukee.” Serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer’s heinous crimes dominated the headlines and overwhelmed local law enforcement. The disappearance of one girl was easily overlooked. \nPeg’s hazy recollections are far from easy for her to interpret\, assess\, or even keep clear in her mind. And now digging deep into her memory raises doubts and difficult–even terrifying–questions. Was there anything Peg could have done to prevent Dee’s disappearance? Who was really to blame for the family’s loss? How often are our memories altered by the very act of voicing them? And what does it mean to bear witness in a world where even our own stories are inherently suspect? \nA heartbreaking page-turner\, Willa C. Richards’ debut novel is the story of a broken family looking for answers in the face of the unknown\, and asks us to reconsider the power and truth of memory. (Harper)

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Terence Lester discusses When We Stand: The Power of Seeking Justice Together
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/rp4ez2xs  \nIt’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all of the injustices that we see in the world. We don’t know what to do and might think that we don’t have anything to offer. But by using our gifts in collaboration with others\, we can do more together than we ever could on our own. Activist Terence Lester knows it’s hard to change the world. But mobilizing and acting together empowers us to do what we can’t do as isolated individuals. Lester looks at the obstacles that prevent us from getting involved\, and he offers practical ways that we can accomplish things together as groups\, families\, churches\, and communities. He helps us find our place in the larger picture\, discerning the unique ways we can contribute and make a difference. By connecting with our neighbors and discovering our own paths of service\, we can drastically change how we follow Christ and see God moving in the world. Togetherness and community give visible testimony of the power of the gospel. In this broken world\, the body of Christ can transform society–when we stand together. (IVP)

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Matt Haig discusses The Comfort Book
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/eci3tb8r \nAn essential book from Matt Haig\, the New York Times bestselling author of The Midnight Library\, for anyone in search of hope\, looking for a path to a more meaningful life\, or in need of a little encouragement. \n“It is a strange paradox\, that many of the clearest\, most comforting life lessons are learnt while we are at our lowest. But then we never think about food more than when we are hungry and we never think about life rafts more than when we are thrown overboard.” \nThe Comfort Book is Haig’s life raft: it’s a collection of notes\, lists\, and stories written over a span of several years that originally served as gentle reminders to Haig’s future self that things are not always as dark as they may seem. Incorporating a diverse array of sources from across the world\, history\, science\, and his own experiences\, Haig offers warmth and reassurance\, reminding us to slow down and appreciate the beauty and unpredictability of existence. SUMMARY:Vroman's: Michael Pollan discusses This is Your Mind on Plants
DESCRIPTION:Co-presented by Vroman’s Bookstore\, The Elliott Bay Book Company\, Changing Hands Bookstores\, and Boulder Bookstore hosted by Changing Hands Bookstores. \nMichael Pollan will be joined in conversation by Rick Doblin\, Ph.D. \nIn This Is Your Mind on Plants (Penguin Press) Michael Pollan dives deep into three plant drugs–opium\, caffeine\, and mescaline–and throws the fundamental strangeness\, and arbitrariness\, of our thinking about them into sharp relief. In this unique blend of history\, science\, and memoir\, as well as participatory journalism\, Michael Pollan examines and experiences these plants from several very different angles and contexts\, and shines a fresh light on a subject that is all too often treated reductively–as a drug\, whether licit or illicit. . Based in part on an essay published almost twenty-five years ago\, this groundbreaking and singular consideration of psychoactive plants\, and our attraction to them through time\, holds up a mirror to our fundamental human needs and aspirations\, the operations of our minds\, and our entanglement with the natural world. \nMichael Pollan is the author of eight books\, including How to Change Your Mind\, Cooked\, Food Rules\, In Defense of Food\, The Omnivore’s Dilemma\, and The Botany of Desire\, all of which were New York Times bestsellers. He is also the author of the audiobook Caffeine: How Coffee and Tea Made the Modern World. A longtime contributor to The New York Times Magazine\, Pollan teaches writing at Harvard University and the University of California\, Berkeley. In 2010\, Time magazine named him one of the one hundred most influential people in the world. \nRick Doblin\, Ph.D.\, is the founder and executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). He received his doctorate in Public Policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government\, where he wrote his dissertation on the regulation of the medical uses of psychedelics and marijuana and his Master’s thesis on a survey of oncologists about smoked marijuana vs. the oral THC pill in nausea control for cancer patients. Rick studied with Dr. Stanislav Grof and was among the first to be certified as a Holotropic Breathwork practitioner. His professional goal is to help develop legal contexts for the beneficial uses of psychedelics and marijuana\, primarily as prescription medicines but also for personal growth for otherwise healthy people\, and eventually to become a legally licensed psychedelic therapist. \n  \nEvent tickets include access to the event and a hardcover copy of This Is Your Mind On Plants. \n  \nZoom links will be sent out via Eventbrite Email 48 hours before the event. Books will be sent after the event. A limited number of books will include a bookplate signed by Michael Pollan. \n  \nTicket options include in-store pick up\, shipped domestically (allow up to 3 weeks for delivery)\, or shipped internationally (allow 4-5 weeks for delivery). Books will be mailed to you shortly after the event\, via USPS Media Mail. For those who choose in-store pick up\, you will be contacted by Vroman’s via email shortly after the event and alerted as to when your book will be ready for pick up. \n  \nPLEASE NOTE: This is not a Vroman’s Live event\, we have partnered with The Elliott Bay Book Company\, Changing Hands Bookstores\, and Boulder Bookstore for this virtual event to be held via Zoom Webinar hosted by Changing Hands Bookstores.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Jessamyn Stanley discusses Yoke: My Yoga of Self-Acceptance
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/fewh7jlb \nIn Sanskrit\, yoga means to “yoke.” To yoke mind and body\, movement and breath\, light and dark\, the good and the bad. This larger idea of “yoke” is what Jessamyn Stanley calls the yoga of the everyday–a yoga that is not just about perfecting your downward dog but about applying the hard lessons learned on the mat to the even harder daily project of living.\nIn a series of deeply honest\, funny autobiographical essays\, Jessamyn explores everything from imposter syndrome to cannabis to why it’s a full-time job loving yourself\, all through the lens of yoke. She calls out an American yoga complex that prefers debating the merits of cotton versus polyblend leggings rather than owning up to its overwhelming Whiteness. She questions why the Western take on yoga so often misses–or misuses–the tradition’s spiritual dimension. And reveals what she calls her own “whole-ass problematic” Growing up Baháí\, loving astrology\, learning to meditate\, finding prana in music.\nAnd in the end\, Jessamyn invites every reader to find the authentic spirit of yoke–linking that good and that bad\, that light and that dark. Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/e2yv6fik \n  \nA mold-breaking memoir of Asian American identity\, political activism\, community\, and purpose. \nNot Yo’ Butterfly is the intimate and unflinching life story of Nobuko Miyamoto–artist\, activist\, and mother. Beginning with the harrowing early years of her life as a Japanese American child navigating a fearful west coast during World War II\, Miyamoto leads readers into the landscapes that defined the experiences of twentieth-century America and also foregrounds the struggles of people of color who reclaimed their histories\, identities\, and power through activism and art. \nMiyamoto vividly describes her early life in the racialized atmosphere of Hollywood musicals and then her turn toward activism as an Asian American troubadour with the release of A Grain of Sand–considered to be the first Asian American folk album. Her narrative intersects with the stories of Yuri Kochiyama and Grace Lee Boggs\, influential in both Asian and Black liberation movements. She tells how her experience of motherhood with an Afro-Asian son\, as well as a marriage that intertwined Black and Japanese families and communities\, placed her at the nexus of the 1992 Rodney King riots–and how she used art to create interracial solidarity and conciliation. \nThrough it all\, Miyamoto has embraced her identity as an Asian American woman to create an antiracist body of work and a blueprint for empathy and praxis through community art. Her sometimes barbed\, often provocative\, and always steadfast story is now told. (University of California Press)

But on the heels of his third tour in Iraq\, the fabric of Dave’s life has begun to unravel. Gripped by PTSD\, he finds himself losing his home\, his wife\, his direction. Most days\, his love for his seven-year-old daughter\, Bella\, is the only thing keeping him going. When tragedy strikes\, Dave makes a dramatic decision: the two of them will flee their damaged lives\, heading off the grid to live in the wilderness of the Pacific Northwest. \nAs they carve out a home in a cave in that harsh\, breathtaking landscape\, echoes of its past begin to reach them. Bella retreats into herself\, absorbed by visions of a mother and son who lived in the cave thousands of years earlier\, at the end of the last ice age. Back in town\, Dave and Bella themselves are rapidly becoming the stuff of legend–to all but those who would force them to return home. \nAs winter sweeps toward the North Cascades\, past and present intertwine into a timeless odyssey. SUMMARY:Vroman's: An Evening with Alice Waters with Eric Schlosser discussing We Are What We Eat!
DESCRIPTION:Join Vroman’s Bookstore\, in partnership with the Elliott Bay Book Company and Third Place Books for an evening with Alice Waters! \nFrom chef and food activist Alice Waters\, an impassioned plea for a radical reconsideration of the way each and every one of us cooks and eats. \nIn We Are What We Eat\, Alice Waters urges us to take up the mantle of slow food culture\, the philosophy at the core of her life’s work. When Waters first opened Chez Panisse in 1971\, she did so with the intention of feeding people good food during a time of political turmoil. Customers responded to the locally sourced organic ingredients\, to the dishes made by hand\, and to the welcoming hospitality that infused the small space–human qualities that were disappearing from a country increasingly seduced by takeout\, frozen dinners\, and prepackaged ingredients. Waters came to see that the phenomenon of fast food culture\, which prioritized cheapness\, availability\, and speed\, was not only ruining our health\, but also dehumanizing the ways we live and relate to one another. \nOver years of working with regional farmers\, Waters and her partners learned how geography and seasonal fluctuations affect the ingredients on the menu\, as well as about the dangers of pesticides\, the plight of fieldworkers\, and the social\, economic\, and environmental threats posed by industrial farming and food distribution. So many of the serious problems we face in the world today–from illness\, to social unrest\, to economic disparity\, and environmental degradation–are all\, at their core\, connected to food. Fortunately\, there is an antidote. Waters argues that by eating in a “slow food way\,” each of us–like the community around her restaurant–can be empowered to prioritize and nurture a different kind of culture\, one that champions values such as biodiversity\, seasonality\, stewardship\, and pleasure in work. \nThis is a declaration of action against fast food values\, and a working theory about what we can do to change the course. As Waters makes clear\, every decision we make about what we put in our mouths affects not only our bodies but also the world at large–our families\, our communities\, and our environment. We have the power to choose what we eat\, and we have the potential for individual and global transformation–simply by shifting our relationship to food. All it takes is a taste. \nAlice Waters is the executive chef\, founder\, and owner of Chez Panisse Restaurant and Café in Berkeley\, California. The vice president of Slow Food International\, she founded the Edible Schoolyard and has received the French Legion of Honor\, the WSJ Magazine Humanitarian Innovator Award\, and three James Beard Awards. \nEric Schlosser is an investigative journalist and the author of Fast Food Nation\, Reefer Madness\, and\, most recently\, Command and Control\, which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. He has written for Rolling Stone\, The Atlantic\, and The New Yorker\, among others\, and has received a number of journalism honors\, including a National Magazine Award. Schlosser previously worked as a playwright for an independent film company. Two of his plays\, Americans (2003) and We the People (2007)\, have been produced in renowned London theaters. \nEvent tickets include a hardcover copy of WE ARE WHAT WE EAT!. \nTicket options include in-store pick up\, shipped domestically (allow up to 3 weeks for delivery)\, or shipped internationally (allow 4-5 weeks for delivery). Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/dwg7ypio \n  \nGrowing up in a New Jersey factory town in the 1980s\, Daisy Hernández believed that her aunt had become deathly ill from eating an apple. No one in her family\, in either the United States or Colombia\, spoke of infectious diseases. Even into her thirties\, she only knew that her aunt had died of Chagas\, a rare and devastating illness that affects the heart and digestive system. But as Hernández dug deeper\, she discovered that Chagas–or the kissing bug disease–is more prevalent in the United States than the Zika virus. \nAfter her aunt’s death\, Hernández began searching for answers. Crisscrossing the country\, she interviewed patients\, doctors\, epidemiologists\, and even veterinarians with the Department of Defense. She learned that in the United States more than three hundred thousand people in the Latinx community have Chagas\, and that outside of Latin America\, this is the only country with the native insects–the “kissing bugs”–that carry the Chagas parasite. \nThrough unsparing\, gripping\, and humane portraits\, Hernández chronicles a story vast in scope and urgent in its implications\, exposing how poverty\, racism\, and public policies have conspired to keep this disease hidden. A riveting and nuanced investigation into racial politics and for-profit healthcare in the United States\, The Kissing Bug reveals the intimate history of a marginalized disease and connects us to the lives at the center of it all. SUMMARY:Vroman's: Andrew McCarthy with Michael Oates Palmer discusses Brat: An 80’s Story
DESCRIPTION:This virtual event is ticketed. Scroll down to purchase.\nFans of Patti Smith’s Just Kids and Rob Lowe’s Stories: I Only Tell My Friends will love this beautifully written\, entertaining\, and emotionally honest memoir by an actor\, director\, and author who found his start as an 80s Brat pack member.\nMost people know Andrew McCarthy from his movie roles in Pretty in Pink\, St. Elmo’s Fire\, Weekend at Bernie’s\, and Less than Zero\, and as a charter member of Hollywood’s Brat Pack. That iconic group of ingenues and heartthrobs included Rob Lowe\, Molly Ringwald\, Emilio Estevez\, and Demi Moore\, and has come to represent both a genre of film and an era of pop culture. In his memoir Brat: An ’80s Story\, McCarthy focuses his gaze on that singular moment in time. The result is a revealing look at coming of age in a maelstrom\, reckoning with conflicted ambition\, innocence\, addiction\, and masculinity. New York City of the 1980s is brought to vivid life in these pages\, from scoring loose joints in Washington Square Park to skipping school in favor of the dark revival houses of the Village where he fell in love with the movies that would change his life. Filled with personal revelations of innocence lost to heady days in Hollywood with John Hughes and an iconic cast of characters\, Brat is a surprising and intimate story of an outsider caught up in a most unwitting success. (Grand Central Publishing) \n  \nThis event ticket includes a signed hardcover copy of Brat: An 80’s Story\, as well as online access to the event for your household. Colonel Henry Carrington arrives in Wyoming’s Powder River Valley to lead the US Army in defending the opening of a new road for gold miners and settlers. Carrington intends to build a fort in the middle of critical hunting grounds\, the home of the Lakota. Red Cloud\, one of the Lakota’s most respected chiefs\, and Crazy Horse\, a young but visionary warrior\, understand full well the implications of this invasion. For the Lakota\, the stakes are their home\, their culture\, their lives. \nAs fall bleeds into winter\, Crazy Horse leads a small war party that confronts Colonel Carrington’s soldiers with near constant attacks. Red Cloud\, meanwhile\, seeks to build the tribal alliances that he knows will be necessary to defeat the soldiers. Colonel Carrington seeks to hold together a US Army beset with internal discord. Carrington’s officers are skeptical of their commander’s strategy\, none more so than Lieutenant George Washington Grummond\, who longs to fight a foe he dismisses as inferior in all ways. The rank-and-file soldiers\, meanwhile\, are still divided by the residue of civil war\, and tempted to desertion by the nearby goldfields. \nThroughout this taut saga–based on real people and events–Michael Punke brings the same immersive\, vivid storytelling and historical insight that made his breakthrough debut so memorable. As Ridgeline builds to its epic conclusion\, it grapples with essential questions of conquest and justice that still echo today. Most students\, however\, are better prepared to pick their major or talk to strangers than they are to take care of themselves in the college setting. College students today are more depressed\, anxious\, and stressed than previous waves of students; they’re also more sedentary\, not really exercising\, and living in a meal-plan limbo supplemented with ramen and coffee. \nIn this comprehensive field guild\, high school coaches Jill and Dave Henry break down the facts and deliver doable\, no-BS strategies for managing physical and mental health on campus. In addition to helpful\, interactive graphics\, the coaches share their relatable true stories–ranging from the ridiculous to the serious–to discuss the five biggest health obstacles students face in college. On top of research-backed tips\, The Greatest College Health Guide You Never Knew You Needed also features raw and personal advice from current students on college campuses across the country. \nWhile simply figuring out what to eat and how to exercise can be completely overwhelming\, this guide goes beyond a basic crash course on how to be healthy. Jill and Dave cover everything from crucial time-management skills to the complex sensitivity of self-doubt\, sexual assault\, and depression with humor\, humility\, and heart. The Greatest College Health Guide You Never Knew You Needed is a complete road map for how to take care of your mind and body that will not only set students up to crush the next four years\, but will also provide a foundation they can carry with them for the rest of their lives. (Skyhorse Publishing) \nJill and Dave Henry have been coaching\, entertaining\, and educating teens in Los Angeles for more than twenty years combined. With every graduating class\, they’ve fielded their student-athletes’ concerns about the transition to college\, particularly the dreaded freshman fifteen. Determined to help\, the Henrys decided to leverage their professional backgrounds (Jill is an award-winning statistics teacher; Dave is an Emmy-nominated editor and television producer) and create a resource to help young adults enjoy college without sacrificing their health.
