SUMMARY:Vroman's: Local Author Day featuring David W. Reed\, Lin Nelson Benedek\, and Louise Wannier
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/njp3kh5b \nDavid W. Reed presents Uphill and Into the Wind\nIt’s 1973. Our nation is torn apart by the Vietnam War\, and the massacre of unarmed students at Kent State. The Vice President has resigned for bribery and tax evasion. The President is being investigated for engaging in criminal activity.\nAt twenty-three\, David Reed has become embittered by political strife and corruption. Disenchanted with his future\, he wants out. Along with new friends Rusty and Susie\, David leaves everything he knows to cross the United States with little more than his bicycle and camera.\nThe trio gets more than they bargain for\, with menacing animals\, extreme weather\, and astonishing encounters. Uphill and Into the Wind recounts an odyssey that spans 5420 miles on bicycles. It chronicles the sudden and surprising glories of nature\, the raw beauty of the land\, and the majesty of the mountains. But that is just the start. Through it all\, the three are changed forever\, in ways they did not expect\, by their long journey into the unknown. \nLin Nelson Benedek presents Singing Lessons\nLin Benedek crafts a poetic score\, both grand and intimate\, in her latest collection\, Singing Lessons. I’m awed by her meticulous eye for detail\, and what a testament to her powers of recall and observation that she’s able to weave an opulent tapestry of examined gesture\, dialogue\, and mise en sc ne with brief philosophical turns that ground her handiwork in a richly\, dark terrain. This book is sumptuous repast for ear and imagination as Benedek pulls us in close to her contemplated world of things and sings us through. – Michelle Bitting\, Broken Kingdom \nLouise Wannier presents Tree Spirits\n“What do you see when you look up at this tree?” TREE SPIRITS is a book written in rhyme which encourages children to develop their imagination\, creativity and emotional intelligence. “How do you imagine they/he/she is feeling today?” For parents and grandparents and friends and family it is a fun book to read with the children in their lives. It includes an interactive drawing section. (ages 3-8)

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Simon Van Booy with Roda Ahmed\, discusses Night Came with Many Stars
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/g28ks90q \nIn Kentucky\, back in 1933\, Carol’s daddy lost his 13-year-old daughter in a game of cards. Award-winning author Simon Van Booy’s spellbinding novel spans decades as he tells the story of Carol and the people in her life. Incidents intersect and lives unexpectedly change course in this masterfully interwoven story of chance and choice that leads home again to a night blessed with light. \n“What you give in this world\,” an old man tells his grandson\, “will be given back to you.” Those words illuminate the actions within this unforgettable novel and its connected characters. A young man survives two nearly fatal accidents. A Black family saves an orphaned white boy. A pregnant teenager is rescued by the side of the road. A teenager with developmental disabilities is given his first job. Each incident grows in meaning and power over many decades as we see connections sometimes felt but not always apparent to the people themselves. “Everything was moving\,” observes Samuel (Carol’s grandson) in the Kentucky woods. “An invisible force that was everywhere\, and made everything touch.” \nTold by a master storyteller\, Night Came with Many Stars is a rare novel that reveals how wondrous\, mysterious\, and magically connected life can be–the light Simon Van Booy creates illuminates our own lives. SUMMARY:Vroman's: Tom Nichols discusses Our Own Worst Enemy: The Assault from Within on Modern Democracy
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/w96oq60q \nOver the past three decades\, citizens of democracies who claim to value freedom\, tolerance\, and the rule of law have increasingly embraced illiberal politicians and platforms. Democracy is in trouble–but who is really to blame? \nIn Our Own Worst Enemy\, Tom Nichols challenges the current depictions of the rise of illiberal and anti-democratic movements in the United States and elsewhere as the result of the deprivations of globalization or the malign decisions of elites. Rather\, he places the blame for the rise of\nilliberalism on the people themselves. Nichols traces the illiberalism of the 21st century to the growth of unchecked narcissism\, rising standards of living\, global peace\, and a resistance to change. Ordinary citizens\, laden with grievances\, have joined forces with political entrepreneurs who thrive\non the creation of rage rather than on the encouragement of civic virtue and democratic cooperation. While it will be difficult\, Nichols argues that we need to defend democracy by resurrecting the virtues of altruism\, compromise\, stoicism\, and cooperation–and by recognizing how good we’ve actually\nhad it in the modern world. \nTrenchant\, contrarian\, and highly engaging\, Our Own Worst Enemy reframes the debate about how democracies have ended up in this dire state of affairs and what to do about it. SUMMARY:Vroman's: Dr. Leana Wen with Lisa See\, discusses Lifelines: A Doctor's Journey in the Fight for Public Health
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! You don’t know it because good public health is invisible. It becomes visible only in its absence\, when it is underfunded and ignored\, a bitter truth laid bare as never before by the devastation of COVID-19. \nLeana Wen–emergency physician\, former Baltimore health commissioner\, CNN medical analyst\, and Washington Post contributing columnist–has lived on the front lines of public health\, leading the fight against the opioid epidemic\, outbreaks of infectious disease\, maternal and infant mortality\, and COVID-19 disinformation. Here\, in gripping detail\, Wen lays bare the lifesaving work of public health and its innovative approach to social ills\, treating gun violence as a contagious disease\, for example\, and racism as a threat to health. \nWen also tells her own uniquely American story: an immigrant from China\, she and her family received food stamps and were at times homeless despite her parents working multiple jobs. That child went on to attend college at thirteen\, become a Rhodes scholar\, and turn to public health as the way to make a difference in the country that had offered her such possibilities. \nUltimately\, she insists\, it is public health that ensures citizens are not robbed of decades of life\, and that where children live does not determine whether they live. SUMMARY:Vroman's: Tracy Swinton Bailey discusses Forever Free: A True Story of Hope in the Fight for Child Literacy
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/1jj3dopq \nAt the root of every important problem we face\, from mass incarceration to income inequality\, is an education system influenced by our nation’s fraught history. Just as past generations fought to ensure that all Americans could enjoy the right to fully participate in our democracy\, so must we rally tirelessly to advance an educational agenda that promotes equity and inclusion. With the gap between white academic achievement and that of students of color widening\, now is the time to turn our attention to the basics\, and few would argue with the fact that the single most essential aspect of a good education is literacy. Beyond reading and writing\, literacy encompasses a whole host of skills that allow us to develop our potential and succeed in society\, including critical thinking\, self-discipline\, curiosity\, leadership\, and motivation. Helping all our nation’s young people\, especially those who live in low-income communities\, improve their literacy skills should be a top priority. \nNumerous programs are operating around the country to address the issue of underperformance in light of the shortcomings of our public school system. In Forever Free\, Tracy Swinton Bailey charts the journey of one such program\, her nonprofit Freedom Readers. From a childhood shaped by books to a career promoting the love of reading\, she describes the hurdles and rewards of academia\, teaching\, mobilizing\, and fundraising. Bailey outlines clearly and persuasively how Freedom Readers’ one-to-one tutoring model has worked in the rural South\, and how it can work across the US. This book will inspire and empower readers\, and should be placed in the hands of educators and organizers at every level. (Other Press)

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Alvy Ray Smith discusses A Biography of the Pixel
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/9fio0ay8\nThe Great Digital Convergence of all media types into one universal digital medium occurred\, with little fanfare\, at the recent turn of the millennium. The bit became the universal medium\, and the pixel–a particular packaging of bits–conquered the world. Henceforward\, nearly every picture in the world would be composed of pixels–cell phone pictures\, app interfaces\, Mars Rover transmissions\, book illustrations\, videogames. In A Biography of the Pixel\, Pixar cofounder Alvy Ray Smith argues that the pixel is the organizing principle of most modern media\, and he presents a few simple but profound ideas that unify the dazzling varieties of digital image making. \nSmith’s story of the pixel’s development begins with Fourier waves\, proceeds through Turing machines\, and ends with the first digital movies from Pixar\, DreamWorks\, and Blue Sky. Today\, almost all the pictures we encounter are digital–mediated by the pixel and irretrievably separated from their media; museums and kindergartens are two of the last outposts of the analog. Smith explains\, engagingly and accessibly\, how pictures composed of invisible stuff become visible–that is\, how digital pixels convert to analog display elements. Taking the special case of digital movies to represent all of Digital Light (his term for pictures constructed of pixels)\, and drawing on his decades of work in the field\, Smith approaches his subject from multiple angles–art\, technology\, entertainment\, business\, and history. A Biography of the Pixel is essential reading for anyone who has watched a video on a cell phone\, played a videogame\, or seen a movie. Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/iojgrnjk \nSummer\, 1976. Jesse and his brother\, Edgar\, are on the road in search of victims. They’re rovers\, nearly indestructible nocturnal beings who must consume human blood in order to survive. For seventy years they’ve lurked on the fringes of society\, roaming from town to town\, dingy motel to dingy motel\, stalking the transients\, addicts\, and prostitutes they feed on. \nThis hard-boiled supernatural hell ride kicks off when the brothers encounter a young woman who disrupts their grim routine\, forcing Jesse to confront his past and plunging his present into deadly chaos as he finds himself scrambling to save her life. The story plays out through the eyes of the brothers\, a grieving father searching for his son’s murderer\, and a violent gang of rover bikers\, coming to a shattering conclusion in Las Vegas on the eve of America’s Bicentennial. \nGripping\, relentless\, and ferocious\, Rovers demonstrates once again why Richard Lange has been hailed as an “expert writer\, his prose exact\, his narrative tightly controlled” (Steph Cha\, Los Angeles Times). Another overfilled\, ill-equipped\, dilapidated ship has sunk under the weight of its too many passengers: Syrians\, Ethiopians\, Egyptians\, Lebanese\, Palestinians\, all of them desperate to escape untenable lives back in their homelands. But miraculously\, someone has survived the passage: nine-year-old Amir\, a Syrian boy who is soon rescued by Vänna. Vänna is a teenage girl\, who\, despite being native to the island\, experiences her own sense of homelessness in a place and among people she has come to disdain. And though Vänna and Amir are complete strangers\, though they don’t speak a common language\, Vänna is determined to do whatever it takes to save the boy. \nIn alternating chapters\, we learn about Amir’s life and how he came to be on the boat\, and we follow him and the girl as they make their way toward safety. What Strange Paradise is the story of two children finding their way through a hostile world. But it is also a story of empathy and indifference\, of hope and despair–and about the way each of those things can blind us to reality. (Knopf Publishing Group)

But a Black man with cops at the door knows to be afraid. \nThe last thing he expects to hear is that his son Isiah has been murdered\, along with Isiah’s white husband\, Derek. Ike had never fully accepted his son but is devastated by his loss. \nDerek’s father Buddy Lee was almost as ashamed of Derek for being gay as Derek was ashamed his father was a criminal. Buddy Lee still has contacts in the underworld\, though\, and he wants to know who killed his boy. \nIke and Buddy Lee\, two ex-cons with little else in common other than a criminal past and a love for their dead sons\, band together in their desperate desire for revenge. In their quest to do better for their sons in death than they did in life\, hardened men Ike and Buddy Lee will confront their own prejudices about their sons and each other\, as they rain down vengeance upon those who hurt their boys. \nProvocative and fast-paced\, S. A. Cosby’s Razorblade Tears is a story of bloody retribution\, heartfelt change – and maybe even redemption. (Flatiron Books)

Nearly thirty years later\, her sister\, Peg\, is still haunted by her sister’s disappearance. Their mother\, on her deathbed\, is desperate to find out what happened to Dee so the family hires a psychic to help find Dee’s body and bring them some semblance of peace. \nThe appearance of the psychic plunges Peg back to the past\, to those final carefree months when she last saw Dee–the summer the Journal Sentinel called “the deadliest . . . in the history of Milwaukee.” Serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer’s heinous crimes dominated the headlines and overwhelmed local law enforcement. The disappearance of one girl was easily overlooked. \nPeg’s hazy recollections are far from easy for her to interpret\, assess\, or even keep clear in her mind. And now digging deep into her memory raises doubts and difficult–even terrifying–questions. Was there anything Peg could have done to prevent Dee’s disappearance? Who was really to blame for the family’s loss? How often are our memories altered by the very act of voicing them? And what does it mean to bear witness in a world where even our own stories are inherently suspect? \nA heartbreaking page-turner\, Willa C. Richards’ debut novel is the story of a broken family looking for answers in the face of the unknown\, and asks us to reconsider the power and truth of memory. (Harper)

DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/rp4ez2xs  \nIt’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all of the injustices that we see in the world. We don’t know what to do and might think that we don’t have anything to offer. But by using our gifts in collaboration with others\, we can do more together than we ever could on our own. Activist Terence Lester knows it’s hard to change the world. But mobilizing and acting together empowers us to do what we can’t do as isolated individuals. Lester looks at the obstacles that prevent us from getting involved\, and he offers practical ways that we can accomplish things together as groups\, families\, churches\, and communities. He helps us find our place in the larger picture\, discerning the unique ways we can contribute and make a difference. By connecting with our neighbors and discovering our own paths of service\, we can drastically change how we follow Christ and see God moving in the world. Togetherness and community give visible testimony of the power of the gospel. In this broken world\, the body of Christ can transform society–when we stand together. (IVP)

But then we never think about food more than when we are hungry and we never think about life rafts more than when we are thrown overboard.” \nThe Comfort Book is Haig’s life raft: it’s a collection of notes\, lists\, and stories written over a span of several years that originally served as gentle reminders to Haig’s future self that things are not always as dark as they may seem. Incorporating a diverse array of sources from across the world\, history\, science\, and his own experiences\, Haig offers warmth and reassurance\, reminding us to slow down and appreciate the beauty and unpredictability of existence. SUMMARY:Vroman's: Michael Pollan discusses This is Your Mind on Plants
DESCRIPTION:Co-presented by Vroman’s Bookstore\, The Elliott Bay Book Company\, Changing Hands Bookstores\, and Boulder Bookstore hosted by Changing Hands Bookstores. \nMichael Pollan will be joined in conversation by Rick Doblin\, Ph.D. \nIn This Is Your Mind on Plants (Penguin Press) Michael Pollan dives deep into three plant drugs–opium\, caffeine\, and mescaline–and throws the fundamental strangeness\, and arbitrariness\, of our thinking about them into sharp relief. In this unique blend of history\, science\, and memoir\, as well as participatory journalism\, Michael Pollan examines and experiences these plants from several very different angles and contexts\, and shines a fresh light on a subject that is all too often treated reductively–as a drug\, whether licit or illicit. . Based in part on an essay published almost twenty-five years ago\, this groundbreaking and singular consideration of psychoactive plants\, and our attraction to them through time\, holds up a mirror to our fundamental human needs and aspirations\, the operations of our minds\, and our entanglement with the natural world. \nMichael Pollan is the author of eight books\, including How to Change Your Mind\, Cooked\, Food Rules\, In Defense of Food\, The Omnivore’s Dilemma\, and The Botany of Desire\, all of which were New York Times bestsellers. He is also the author of the audiobook Caffeine: How Coffee and Tea Made the Modern World. A longtime contributor to The New York Times Magazine\, Pollan teaches writing at Harvard University and the University of California\, Berkeley. In 2010\, Time magazine named him one of the one hundred most influential people in the world. \nRick Doblin\, Ph.D.\, is the founder and executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). He received his doctorate in Public Policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government\, where he wrote his dissertation on the regulation of the medical uses of psychedelics and marijuana and his Master’s thesis on a survey of oncologists about smoked marijuana vs. the oral THC pill in nausea control for cancer patients. Rick studied with Dr. Stanislav Grof and was among the first to be certified as a Holotropic Breathwork practitioner. His professional goal is to help develop legal contexts for the beneficial uses of psychedelics and marijuana\, primarily as prescription medicines but also for personal growth for otherwise healthy people\, and eventually to become a legally licensed psychedelic therapist. \n  \nEvent tickets include access to the event and a hardcover copy of This Is Your Mind On Plants. \n  \nZoom links will be sent out via Eventbrite Email 48 hours before the event. Books will be sent after the event. Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/fewh7jlb \nIn Sanskrit\, yoga means to “yoke.” To yoke mind and body\, movement and breath\, light and dark\, the good and the bad. This larger idea of “yoke” is what Jessamyn Stanley calls the yoga of the everyday–a yoga that is not just about perfecting your downward dog but about applying the hard lessons learned on the mat to the even harder daily project of living.\nIn a series of deeply honest\, funny autobiographical essays\, Jessamyn explores everything from imposter syndrome to cannabis to why it’s a full-time job loving yourself\, all through the lens of yoke. She calls out an American yoga complex that prefers debating the merits of cotton versus polyblend leggings rather than owning up to its overwhelming Whiteness. She questions why the Western take on yoga so often misses–or misuses–the tradition’s spiritual dimension. And reveals what she calls her own “whole-ass problematic” Growing up Baháí\, loving astrology\, learning to meditate\, finding prana in music.\nAnd in the end\, Jessamyn invites every reader to find the authentic spirit of yoke–linking that good and that bad\, that light and that dark. DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Beginning with the harrowing early years of her life as a Japanese American child navigating a fearful west coast during World War II\, Miyamoto leads readers into the landscapes that defined the experiences of twentieth-century America and also foregrounds the struggles of people of color who reclaimed their histories\, identities\, and power through activism and art. \nMiyamoto vividly describes her early life in the racialized atmosphere of Hollywood musicals and then her turn toward activism as an Asian American troubadour with the release of A Grain of Sand–considered to be the first Asian American folk album. Her narrative intersects with the stories of Yuri Kochiyama and Grace Lee Boggs\, influential in both Asian and Black liberation movements. She tells how her experience of motherhood with an Afro-Asian son\, as well as a marriage that intertwined Black and Japanese families and communities\, placed her at the nexus of the 1992 Rodney King riots–and how she used art to create interracial solidarity and conciliation. \nThrough it all\, Miyamoto has embraced her identity as an Asian American woman to create an antiracist body of work and a blueprint for empathy and praxis through community art. Her sometimes barbed\, often provocative\, and always steadfast story is now told. (University of California Press)

Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/nst4il4j \n  \nIn this full-color middle grade graphic memoir for fans of Raina Telgemeier and Jerry Craft\, Yehudi Mercado draws inspiration from his childhood struggle with his weight while finding friendship with his imaginary mascot\, Chunky\, as he navigates growing up in a working class Mexican-Jewish family. \nHudi needs to lose weight\, according to his doctors. Concerned about the serious medical issue Hudi had when he was younger\, his parents push him to try out for sports. Hudi would rather do anything else\, but then he meets Chunky\, his imaginary friend and mascot. Together\, they decide to give baseball a shot. \nAs the only Mexican and Jewish kid in his neighborhood\, Hudi has found the cheerleader he never had. Baseball doesn’t go well (unless getting hit by the ball counts)\, but the two friends have a great time drawing and making jokes. While Hudi’s parents keep trying to find the right sport for Hudi\, Chunky encourages him to pursue his true love–comedy. \nBut when Hudi’s dad loses his job\, it gets harder for Hudi to chart his own course\, even with Chunky’s guidance. Can Chunky help Hudi stay true to himself or will this friendship strike out? (Katherine Tegen Books)

Talk different. Eat different. \nAnd the word on the playground is: they have fleas. \nBut\, one of their classmates wonders\, what if we got to know the new kid? Visited their home (wolves’ den)? Met their parents (wolves)? Shared a snack (squirrels)? \nMaybe then the new kid wouldn’t be so bad after all. \nSchool’s in session for a howlingly fun “lesson” in preconceptions\, differences\, rumors\, karma\, and not just being the new kid\, but befriending them. SUMMARY:Vroman's: Jonathan Evison with Tod Goldberg discusses Legends of the North Cascades
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/v6d65ux9 \n  \nDave Cartwright used to be good at a lot of things: good with his hands\, good at solving problems\, good at staying calm in a crisis. But on the heels of his third tour in Iraq\, the fabric of Dave’s life has begun to unravel. Gripped by PTSD\, he finds himself losing his home\, his wife\, his direction. Most days\, his love for his seven-year-old daughter\, Bella\, is the only thing keeping him going. When tragedy strikes\, Dave makes a dramatic decision: the two of them will flee their damaged lives\, heading off the grid to live in the wilderness of the Pacific Northwest. \nAs they carve out a home in a cave in that harsh\, breathtaking landscape\, echoes of its past begin to reach them. Bella retreats into herself\, absorbed by visions of a mother and son who lived in the cave thousands of years earlier\, at the end of the last ice age. Back in town\, Dave and Bella themselves are rapidly becoming the stuff of legend–to all but those who would force them to return home. \nAs winter sweeps toward the North Cascades\, past and present intertwine into a timeless odyssey. Poignant and profound\, Legends of the North Cascades brings Jonathan Evison’s trademark vibrant\, honest voice to bear on an expansive story that is at once a meditation on the perils of isolation and an exploration of the ways that connection can save us.
