SUMMARY:Vroman's: Laurence Leamer discusses Hitchcock’s Blondes
DESCRIPTION:Alfred Hitchcock was fixated–not just on the dark\, twisty stories that became his hallmark\, but also by the blond actresses who starred in many of his iconic movies. The director of North by Northwest\, Rear Window\, and other classic films didn’t much care if they wore wigs\, got their hair coloring out of a bottle\, or were the rarest human specimen–a natural blonde–as long as they shone with a golden veneer on camera. The lengths he went to in order to showcase (and often manipulate) these women would become the stuff of movie legend. But the women themselves have rarely been at the center of the story\, until now. \nIn Hitchcock’s Blondes\, bestselling biographer Laurence Leamer offers an intimate journey into the lives of eight legendary actresses whose stories helped chart the course of the troubled\, talented director’s career–from his early days in the British film industry to his triumphant American debut\, to his Hollywood heyday and beyond. Through the stories of June Howard-Tripp\, Madeleine Carroll\, Ingrid Bergman\, Grace Kelly\, Janet Leigh\, Kim Novak\, Eva Marie Saint\, and Tippi Hedren–who starred in fourteen of Hitchcock’s most notable films and who bore the brunt of his fondness and sometimes fixation–we can finally start to see the enigmatic man himself. After all\, “his” blondes (as he thought of them) knew the truths of his art\, his obsessions and desires\, as well as anyone. \nFrom the acclaimed author of Capote’s Women comes an intimate\, revealing\, and thoroughly modern look at both the enduring art created by a man obsessed…and the private toll that fixation took on the women in his orbit. SUMMARY:Vroman's: Daniel Sweren-Becker discusses Kill Show: A True Crime Novel
DESCRIPTION:Sara Parcell disappeared without a trace on a crisp April morning in Frederick\, Maryland. Her tragic story was a national obsession and the centerpiece of a controversial television docuseries that followed her disappearance in real-time. But is it possible that everyone missed the biggest secret of all? \nTen years after these events\, the people who knew Sara best were finally ready to talk. In this genre-bending novel\, Daniel Sweren-Becker fashions an oral history around the seemingly familiar crime of a teenage girl gone missing. Yet Kill Show\, filled with diabolical twists and provocative social commentary\, is no standard mystery. Through “interviews” with family members\, neighbors\, law enforcement\, television executives\, and a host of other compelling characters\, Sweren-Becker constructs a riveting tale about one family’s tragedy–and Hollywood’s insatiable desire to exploit it. \nBy revealing the seedy underbelly of the true-crime entertainment machine\, Kill Show probes literary territory beyond the bounds of the standard whodunit; it’s a thoughtful exploration into America’s obsession with the mysteries\, cold cases\, and violent tales we turn to for comfort. Groundbreaking\, fast-moving\, and informed\, this is a novel about who’s really responsible for the tragedies we love to consume. (Harper) \n

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Louis Friedman discuss Alone But Not Lonely
DESCRIPTION:Humans have always been fascinated by the possibility of extraterrestrial life\, often wondering if we are alone in the universe. Drawing on nearly fifty years as a leader in planetary exploration\, Louis Friedman brings into focus the subject of extraterrestrial life\, separating knowledge from conjecture\, fact from fiction\, to draw scientific and technical conclusions that answer this enduring question. \nFriedman argues that intelligent life is probably rare in the universe (maybe even uniquely on Earth) but that simple life is likely abundant on millions or billions of planets waiting now to be discovered. He asserts that studying and searching for extraterrestrial life cannot be done by interstellar probes–due to the vastness of space and the comparative brevity of human lifespans–but it can be done remotely by a new technique involving the solar gravity lens that can magnify exoplanets by tens of billions. This technique will allow humankind to explore exoplanets and open up an exciting new field of comparative astrobiology. \nWide-ranging in scope\, this book discusses the history of searching for extraterrestrial life\, the scientific evidence thereof\, and finally his own conclusions on what’s next. Included in the book are three appendices: an explanation of interstellar messaging\, a reprint of a debate between Carl Sagan and Ernst Mayr on extraterrestrial intelligence\, and an opinion essay on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. SUMMARY:Steve Searles\, in conversation with Chris Erskine\, discusses What the Bears Know
DESCRIPTION:In this wondrous and eye-opening exploration\, Steve Searles\, the renowned and respected “Bear Whisperer” of Mammoth Lakes\, takes the reader on a journey into the lives of these remarkable creatures and the world we share. \nIn the late 1990s\, the town of Mammoth Lakes\, California hired Steve Searles as a hunter to cull half its troublesome bear population. But as he began to prepare for the grim task\, the bears soon won him over\, and Searles realized there had to be a better way. He soon developed non-lethal tactics to control their behavior and overpopulation which heralded a landmark moment in the care and handling of the American black bear. \nBut change was not without its challenges. To some\, his success was dismissed due to his lack of formal academic training. Yet Searles never wavered in his commitment and eventually became not just a local folk hero but a nationally recognized expert. This high school dropout saved not just the bears\, but\, in many ways\, his community. \nIn a tradition that runs from John Muir to Bear Grylls\, Searles finds a fellowship with nature and a deeper meaning in the world of bears. Do bears understand things we don’t? Are they dialed into some greater natural force? \nUnlike us\, bears waste little time on unreasonable fears. The bears are fully in the moment. They have an inner peace that seems to offset their power and strength. That may explain why no other animal on the planet is as revered as the bear. \nAs Searles shares his remarkable knowledge and we become immersed in the ursine world\, you’ll never look at bears or nature the same way again. Warm and poignant\, and perfect for anyone who has been fascinated by the natural world\, What the Bears Know shows that wisdom and fulfillment can come from unexpected places. (Pegasus Books)

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Ticketed - Chloe Gong\, in conversation with Racquel Marie\, discussing Foul Heart Huntsman
DESCRIPTION:Winter is drawing thick in 1932 Shanghai\, as is the ever-nearing threat of a Japanese invasion. \nRosalind Lang has suffered the worst possible fate for a national spy: she’s been exposed. With the media storm camped outside her apartment for the infamous Lady Fortune\, she’s barely left her bedroom in weeks\, plotting her next course of action after Orion was taken and his memories of Rosalind wiped. Though their marriage might have been a sham\, his absence hurts her more than any physical wound. She won’t rest until she gets him back. \nBut with her identity in the open\, the task is near impossible. The only way to leave the city and rescue Orion is under the guise of a national tour. It’s easy to convince her superiors that the countryside needs unity more than ever\, and who better than an immortal girl to stir pride and strength into the people? \nWhen the tour goes wrong\, however\, everything Rosalind once knew is thrown up in the air. Taking refuge outside Shanghai\, old ghosts come into the open and adversaries turn to allies. To save Orion\, they must find a cure to his mother’s traitorous invention and take this dangerous chemical weapon away from impending foreign invasion–but the clock is ticking\, and if Rosalind fails\, it’s not only Orion she loses\, but her nation itself. (Margaret K. McElderry Books) \nRacquel Marie grew up in Southern California\, where her passion for storytelling of all kinds was encouraged by her friends and big family. She received a BA in English with an emphasis in creative writing and a minor in gender and sexuality studies from the University of California\, Irvine. She is the author of Ophelia After All\, You Don’t Have a Shot\, and many unfinished first drafts.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Evelyn McoDonnell discusses The World According To Joan Didion
DESCRIPTION:Joan Didion was a writer’s writer; not only a groundbreaking journalist\, essayist\, novelist and screenwriter\, but a keen observer who honed her sights on life’s telling details. Her insights continue to influence creatives and admirers\, encouraging them to become close observers of the world\, unsentimental critics\, and meticulous stylists. \nAn antidote to a global view that narrows our vision to the smallest screens\, The World According to Joan Didion is a meditation on the people\, places\, and objects that propelled Didion’s prose and an invitation to journalists\, storytellers\, and life adventurers to “throw themselves into the convulsions of the world\,” as she once said. \nEvelyn McDonnell\, the acclaimed journalist\, essayist\, critic\, feminist\, native Californian\, and university professor who regularly teaches Didion’s work\, is attuned to interpret Didion’s vision for readers today. Inspired by Didion’s own words–from her works both published and unpublished–and informed by the people who knew Didion and those whose lives she shaped\, The World According to Joan Didion is an illustrated journey through her life\, tracing the path she carved from Sacramento\, Portuguese Bend\, Los Angeles\, and Malibu to Manhattan\, Miami\, and Hawaii. McDonnell reveals the world as it was seen through Didion’s eyes and explores her work in chapters keyed to the singular physical motifs of her writing: Snake. Typewriter. Hotel. Notebook. Girl. Etc. \nOne of the first books to be published after the revered writer’s death in 2021\, The World According to Joan Didion is a literary companion for those embarking on new journeys and a guide to innovative ways of being. It will radically transform the way you explore the world\, and will help you answer the question as you sit in a café\, or on a plane or train\, pondering the future: What would Joan Didion have seen?

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Sara Kuburic discusses It's On Me
DESCRIPTION:So many of us feel lonely\, unfulfilled\, or trapped–in our roles and relationships\, in cycles of self-sabotage and bad decisions\, by our patterns and misguided attempts to feel happy or to feel something. According to existential psychotherapist Sara Kuburic\, it doesn’t have to be so difficult. Really. \nThe answer is found in facing ourselves–whatever version that might be\, regardless of whether we like the person we see reflected back to us. It’s about accepting full responsibility for the choices and actions that create our reality. It’s about finally taking ownership of this person we call our “Self.” It’s about realizing that it’s on us to figure out the two most essential questions: “Who am I” and “Why am I here?” and then to live accordingly. \nIn It’s on Me\, Kuburic unpacks “self-loss\,” giving us new vocabulary to understand this rarely talked about experience and offers tools she’s used for years to help clients recover. Self-loss becomes apparent when we do not recognize ourselves in our actions\, words\, or relationships; when we lose sight of who we truly are\, and feel the pain and emptiness from performing or observing life\, rather than living it. \nRevelatory and empowering\, Kuburic shows how we can stop sleepwalking our way through the lives we don’t want and step into our most vibrant\, authentic\, and meaningful Self. In doing so\, we unlock a deep sense of connection to our innermost being\, and to those around us.

Once she makes it north\, she puts aside her dream of being a model to do what she has to do to survive as a woman with little money and no mooring: get married and have a family of her own. When secrets start to spill out and she and her family slowly begin to unravel\, Lolo is willing to do whatever it takes to keep her dream intact and those she loves together. \nMeet Rae: when Lolo’s headstrong daughter\, Rae discovers that she is adopted\, it’s just one secret among others that her family is keeping. When Rae finds out that she’s about to become a mother herself\, she knows that there is an important reckoning that must be faced about herself and her two mothers. \nPotent\, poetic\, powerful\, told with deep love\, and spanning from the Great Migration to the civil unrest of the 1960s to the quest for women’s equality in early 2000s\, Denene Millner’s beautifully wrought novel explores three women’s intimate\, and often complicated\, struggle with what it truly means to be to be family.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Marcie Bianco Discusses Breaking Free
DESCRIPTION:For more than a century\, women have fought for equality. Yet\, time and again\, their battles have fallen short. Even so-called constitutionally-protected equal rights can be withdrawn by judges and undermined by legislators. But the greater problem is in the notion of equality itself. \nIn Breaking Free\, culture writer Marcie Bianco persuasively argues that the very concept of equality is a fallacy\, an illusory goal that cannot address historic forms of discrimination and oppression. Starting with the campaign for women’s suffrage and traveling through modern history\, she shows us how equality has been designed to keep women and disenfranchised communities chasing an unobtainable goal. Conditioned for generations to want equality\, it has become an insidious mindset locking us into the gender binary and reductive identity politics. Bianco calls upon a long-overlooked lineage to argue that only freedom can liberate feminism from these constraints and proposes three freedom practices for women to reclaim their bodily autonomy and power. \nWhat happens if we free ourselves of equality? Controversial and thrilling\, Breaking Free guides readers toward new hope for the future of the feminist movement.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: James Ellroy Discusses The Enchanters
DESCRIPTION:Los Angeles\, August 4\, 1962. The city broils through a midsummer heat wave. Marilyn Monroe ODs. A B-movie starlet is kidnapped. The overhyped LAPD overreacts. Chief Bill Parker’s looking for some getback. The Monroe deal looks like a moneymaker. He calls in Freddy Otash. \nThe freewheeling Freddy O: tainted ex-cop\, defrocked private eye\, dope fiend\, and freelance extortionist. A man who lives by the maxim “Opportunity is love.” Freddy gets to work. He dimly perceives Marilyn Monroe’s death and the kidnapped starlet to be a poisonous riddle that only he has the guts and the brains to untangle. We are with him as he tears through all those who block his path to the truth. We are with him as he penetrates the faux-sunshine of Jack and Bobby Kennedy and the shuck of Camelot. We are with him as he falters\, and grasps for love beyond opportunity. We are with him as he tracks Marilyn Monroe’s horrific last charade through a nightmare L.A. that he served to create — and as he confronts his complicity and his own raging madness. \nIt’s the Summer of ’62\, baby. Freddy O’s got a hot date with history. The savage Sixties are ready to pop. It’s just a shot away. \nThe Enchanters is a transcendent work of American popular fiction. It is James Ellroy at his most crazed\, brilliant\, provocative\, profanely hilarious\, and stop-your-heart tender. It is a luminous psychological drama and an unparalleled thrill ride. It is\, resoundingly\, the great American crime novel.
