SUMMARY:Vroman's: Becky Nicolaides\, in conversation with Naomi Hirahara\, The New Suburbia
DESCRIPTION:America’s suburbs have been transforming. The conventional story of suburbs as bastions of white\, middle-class homeowners no longer describes the suburbs of America’s cities. Today they house a more typical cross-section of the nation–rich\, poor\, Black American\, Latino\, Asian\, immigrant\, the unhoused\, the lavishly housed\, and everyone in between. Stories of everyday suburban life\, in the process\, have taken on new inflections. \nNowhere are these changes more vivid than in Los Angeles. In this suburban metropolis and global powerhouse\, lily white suburbs have virtually disappeared\, and over two-thirds of the County’s suburbs have become majority minority. Examining this vanguard of change from the postwar to the present\, The New Suburbia follows the Asian Americans\, Black Americans\, and Latinos who moved into white neighborhoods that once barred them. They bought homes\, enrolled their children in schools\, and began navigating suburban life. They faced a choice: would they remake the suburbs\, or would the suburbs remake them? In places like Pasadena\, San Marino\, South Gate\, and Lakewood\, suburbanites faced the challenges of living together in difference. Historian Becky Nicolaides explores a range of community experiences\, from internal resegregation to suburban poverty\, an embrace of law-and-order culture to police brutality\, friendly neighbors to social withdrawal. In some communities\, diverse residents continued longstanding habits of exclusion and perpetuated metropolitan inequality. In others\, they embraced more inclusive\, multicultural suburban ideals. Through it all\, the common denominators of suburbia remained–low-slung landscapes of single-family homes and families seeking the good life. \nAn authoritative work based on a half-century of quantitative data and unpublished oral histories and interviews\, The New Suburbia explores vital landscapes where the American dream has endured\, even as the dreamers have changed.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Sherri L. Smith and Elizabeth Wein discuss American Wings
DESCRIPTION:From the acclaimed author of Flygirl and the bestselling author of Code Name Verity comes the thrilling and inspiring true story of the desegregation of the skies. \nIn the years between World War I and World War II\, aviation fever was everywhere\, including among Black Americans. But what hope did a Black person have of learning to fly in a country constricted by prejudice and Jim Crow laws\, where some previous Black aviators like Bessie \nColeman had to move to France to earn their wings? \nAmerican Wings follows a group of determined Black Americans: Cornelius Coffey and Johnny Robinson\, skilled auto mechanics; Janet Harmon Bragg\, a nurse; and Willa Brown\, a teacher and social worker. Together\, they created a flying club and built their own airfield on Chicago’s South Side. As the U.S. hurtled toward World War II\, they established a school to train new pilots\, teaching both Black and white students together and proving\, in a time when the U.S. military was still segregated\, that successful integration was possible. \nComplete with black-and-white photographs throughout\, American Wings brings to light a hidden history of pioneering Black men and women who\, with grit and resilience\, battled powerful odds for an equal share of the sky. (G.P. Putnam’s Sons for Young Readers) \nSherri L. Smith is the author of several novels for young adults\, including the critically acclaimed The Blossom and the Firefly\, Flygirl\, Orleans\, and Pasadena\, as well as the middle-grade novel The Toymaker’s Apprentice. Visit her online at sherrilsmith.com \nElizabeth Wein is a recreational pilot and the owner of about a thousand maps. She is the author of several young adult novels\, including Code Name Verity\, an Edgar Award winner and a #1 New York Times bestseller; Black Dove\, White Raven\, winner of the Children’s Africana Book Award; and most recently\, Stateless. Her book A Thousand Sisters: The Heroic Airwomen of the Soviet Union in World War II was a finalist for YALSA’s Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults Award. SUMMARY:Vroman's: Mark Eaton discusses Historical Fiction Now
DESCRIPTION:Historical Fiction Now brings together prominent authors\, scholars\, and critics of historical fiction to explore the genre’s character\, fortunes\, and potential in the twenty-first century. \nGathering together the voices of novelists\, critics\, academics\, and several authors writing across these categories\, the volume explores the nature of reading\, writing\, and writing about historical fiction in the present moment while meditating on some of the myriad contexts of the genre. \nWhat inspires writers to choose particular moments\, events\, and personalities as the subjects of their fictional imaginings\, and with what implications for their readers’ understanding of the present? How do contemporary scholars approach the making and reception of historical fiction\, and how do these approaches resonate with writers’ own preoccupations in the process of invention? What might scholars of a genre with a long and complex history learn from its contemporary practitioners? Conversely\, how do novelists understand their own historical fictions (if at all) in relation to the theoretical and critical traditions shaping the work of their academic colleagues? SUMMARY:Vroman's: Nikki Vargas\, in conversation with Jeremy Tarr\, discusses Call You When I Land
DESCRIPTION:At twenty-six years old\, life looked a certain way for Nikki Vargas. She’d settled in New York City ready to join the ranks of the Carrie Bradshaw’s of the world\, had landed in a promising advertising career\, and was newly engaged to her college sweetheart. But between corporate happy hours and wedding dress fittings\, she couldn’t shake a deep underlying sense of imposter syndrome\, a voice telling her that she was rocketing towards a future that didn’t look like her. And so\, she bought a plane ticket: first to Cartagena. Then to Panama. Then to Iguazú. \nWhat begins with one freelance travel writing assignment escalates into a whirlwind\, globe-spanning journey that would transform Nikki’s life. Taking her from the street food stalls of Vietnam to the cascading waterfalls of Argentina\, Nikki uncovers shocking truths about her family\, comes face to face with a new love interest – or two – and ultimately turns a no-name blog into the internationally celebrated venture of Unearth Women\, the first major female-focused travel publication. \nTold in transporting detail and candid reflections\, Call You When I Land takes the familiar story of a woman going abroad to find herself and turns it on its head\, as the act of traveling becomes\, for Nikki\, an exhilarating career path – and ultimately a tool to champion women’s voices across the world.

Sellerz-Jackson will be joined by panelists Dr. Mariel Buqué and Arielle Estoria\, discussing topics near to all their hearts such as healing from trauma and practices for thriving in our mental health\, self-care\, relationships\, and beyond. More panelists to be announced. \nABOUT OUR PANELISTS:\n*Brandi Sellerz-Jackson is a storyteller\, birth and postpartum doula\, and the creator of Not So Private Parts. Initially created as a women’s lifestyle blog\, Not So Private Parts has evolved into a resource removing the shame and stigma surrounding women’s issues. Sellerz-Jackson is the co-founder of Moms in Color\, a Black mom collective centered around celebrating diversity in the motherhood space. She is also the senior manager of social media for Ergobaby\, a leading brand in babywearing and attachment parenting. She has been featured in USA Today\, Essence\, and MOTHER\, among other outlets. Sellerz-Jackson lives in Pasadena\, CA with her husband\, Jon; their three boys\, Jax\, Jedi\, and Jupiter; and their labradoodle\, Chaka. \n*Mariel Buqué\, PhD\, is a Columbia University–trained trauma-informed psychologist\, professor\, and sound bath meditation healer. She has appeared as an expert on Good Morning America and Today and in Allure\, Self\, Glamour\, and Well + Good\, among many other outlets\, and has offered wellness talks to corporations such as Google\, Capital One\, and Meta. She is originally from the Dominican Republic and currently lives in New Jersey. Break the Cycle is her first book. \n*Born and raised in foggy Northern California and now residing in Los Angeles CA with her spouse John\, Arielle Estoria (R-E-L EH-STORY-UH) (she/her) is a Published and commissioned Poet\, Author and Actor and Model. Her motto\, “Words not for the ears but for the soul” stems from her dedication to remind anyone who encounters her work that words are meant to be felt and experienced not just heard. With a specific heart in empowering\, encouraging and making space for audiences of women to feel free and at home in their own bodies.\nArielle is the Co-Author of two self-published collections of poetry: Vagabonds and Zealots (2014)\, and Write Bloody Spill Pretty (2017) which can both be found on Amazon.com and in 2016\, released her EP of poetry and music titled Symphony of a Lioness. In March 2023\, Estoria released her first solo book of poetry titled\, THE UNFOLDING an invitation to come home to yourself\, with Harper One available wherever books\, e-books and audiobooks are available. \nThree ticket options are available:\nAll tickets will include one entry and one book\, depending on the title you choose.\nOptions include Brandi Sellerz-Jackson’s forthcoming title\, On Thriving\, Break The Cycle by Dr. Mariel Buqué and The Unfolding by Arielle Estoria. \nON THRIVING by Brandi Sellerz-Jackson\nA renowned doula shares powerful lessons on healing and thriving through the murky seasons of life in this moving\, intimate guide to deeper self-awareness and radical joy.\nWe’ve all been there: We take a pause\, look at our lives\, and desire more—more from our relationships\, more from our wellness journeys\, maybe simply more from ourselves. For some\, it might be more fun\, more peace\, more exploration—but what does it take to get to the other side of living in survival mode? In On Thriving\, Brandi Sellerz-Jackson helps us wade through what she calls the four great labors of our lives—labors that she’s had to overcome and that she has led many clients through.\nDrawing from her experiences as a doula and intimate storytelling from her own life\, Sellerz-Jackson guides us through the many phases of these great labors—labors that we can get stuck in\, stunting our ability to thrive. Across age\, gender\, economic status\, or background\, we all move through the great labor of our relationships\, our mental health\, grief and loss\, and the feeling of being othered. Sellerz-Jackson doesn’t shy away from the pitfalls of these labors but rather challenges us to actively remain present within them and ask ourselves: What do I need to thrive in the space I’m currently in? In On Thriving\,you’ll come to recognize the survival tools you’ve picked up along the way and exchange them for thriving tools and “rich-uals.” You’ll commit to no longer making a home out of chaos and rediscovering sanctuary within yourself.\nComparing our thriving to that of plant life\, Sellerz-Jackson simplifies the complicated—and oftentimes overwhelming—journey as we attempt to grow in an inhospitable environment. With insightful and vulnerable storytelling\, she invites a deep\, soul-stirring investigation of our past and present to gather all that we need to thrive right where we are\, right now. \nBREAK THE CYCLE by Dr. Mariel Buqué\nThe definitive\, paradigm shifting guide to healing intergenerational trauma—weaving together scientific research with practical exercises and stories from the therapy room—from Dr. Mariel Buqué\, Ph.D\, a Columbia University-trained\, trauma-informed\, psychologist\, professor\, and practitioner of holistic healing.\nWhen a physical wound is left unhealed\, it continues to cause pain and can infect the whole body. When emotions are left unhealed\, they similarly cause harm that spreads to other parts of our lives\, hurting our family\, friends\, coworkers\, and others. Eventually\, this hurt can injure an entire community\, metastasizing across years and generations. This is intergenerational trauma. This trauma is why some of us become estranged from our families\, why some of us are people pleasers\, and why some of us find ourselves in co-dependent relationships. This trauma can be rooted in the experiences of ancestors\, who may have suffered due to their race or identity\, and it can be collective\, the result of a shared experience like systemic oppression\, harmful engrained behaviors in a culture like the acceptance of physical discipline of children\, or even a natural disaster like a pandemic. These wounds are complex\, impacting our minds\, bodies\, and spirits. Healing requires a holistic approach that has so far been absent from the field of psychology. Until now.\nFrom Dr. Mariel Buqué\, a leading trauma psychologist\, comes a groundbreaking guide to transforming intergenerational pain into intergenerational abundance. With BREAK THE CYCLE\, she delivers the definitive guide to healing inherited trauma. Weaving together scientific research with practical exercises and stories from the therapy room\, Dr. Buqué teaches readers how trauma is transmitted from one generation to the next and how they can break the cycle through tangible therapeutic practices\, learning to pass down strength instead of pain to future generations. \nTHE UNFOLDING by Arielle Estoria\n“A moving\, fresh\, unique poetry collection and a generous invitation into the mind of the poet. Both a galvanizing wake-up call and a tender lullaby.” — Glennon Doyle\, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Untamed\n“What I love about Arielle’s writing is that she takes readers on this journey step by step\, filled with wisdom and grace. This book will help anyone seeking to unfold into their bloom.” — Morgan Harper Nichols\, author of All Along You Were Blooming and Peace is a Practice\nIn this beautiful collection of poems\, essays\, and meditations\, Arielle Estoria tenderly reveals the places in her life where she has been broken open and mended back together in new ways. In doing so\, she shows each of us how when we walk through our own process of “unfolding\,” though it may be uncomfortable at times\, there is light on the other side. Let these words guide your soul\, and return home to the person you were always meant to be. \nThis ticketed event will take place at All Saints Church located at 132 N Euclid Ave\, Pasadena. \nBooks that come with the ticket will be handed out at check-in and will be pre-signed so a book signing will NOT follow the conversation. Additional copies of all titles\, will be available for purchase at the event.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Alison Dundes Renteln discusses International Human Rights
DESCRIPTION:This book provides an interdisciplinary overview of international human rights issues\, offering truly international coverage including the Global South. This book goes on to analyze institutions that strive to promote and enforce human rights standards\, including the United Nations system\, regional human rights bodies\, and domestic courts. It also discusses a wide variety of substantive human rights including genocide\, torture\, capital punishment\, and other cruel and unusual punishments. In particular\, the book offers an accessible introduction to key understudied topics within human rights\, such as socioeconomic rights\, cultural rights\, and environmental rights. It also focuses on the rights of marginalized groups\, including children’s rights\, rights of persons with disabilities\, women’s rights\, labor rights\, indigenous rights\, and LGBTQ+ rights\, making this an engaging and invaluable resource for the contemporary student.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Matt Coyle and Tim Maleeny discuss Odyssey’s End and Hanging the Devil
DESCRIPTION:Odyssey’s End: San Diego private investigator Rick Cahill’s past comes back to haunt him when he’s at his most vulnerable. His wife\, Leah\, has fled with their daughter\, Krista\, to her parents’ home in Santa Barbara. She fears Rick’s violent outbursts brought on by his potentially fatal brain disorder\, CTE–and she doesn’t trust that he’ll ever be able to tame his manic desire to bring his own brand of justice to an unjust world. \nRick desperately wants to reunite his family and help provide for Krista’s future–one he fears he won’t be alive to see. A jumpstart toward that future appears in the form of Peter Stone\, Rick’s longtime enemy. Stone offers Rick $50\,000 to find a woman he claims can save his life with a kidney transplant. Rick can’t pass up the chance to buttress Krista’s future.\nWhen what seems like a simple missing person case spirals out of control into cryptocurrency machinations\, dead bodies\, and an outgunned faceoff\, Rick is forced to battle evil from his past. Can he stay alive long enough to see his family one last time? (Oceanview Publishing) \nHanging the Devil: It was supposed to be a simple job: steal the paintings\, leave the forgeries…\nWhen a helicopter crashes through the skylight of the Asian Art Museum\, an audacious heist turns into a tragedy. The only witness to the crash is eleven-year-old Grace\, who watches in horror as her uncle is killed and a priceless statue stolen by two men and a–ghost? At least that’s how the eerie\, smoke-like figure with parchment skin and floating hair appears to Grace. Scared almost to death\, she flees into the night and seeks refuge in the back alleys of San Francisco’s Chinatown. \nGrace is found by Sally Mei\, self-appointed guardian of Chinatown. While Sally trains Grace in basic survival skills\, her erstwhile partner Cape Weathers\, private detective and public nuisance\, searches for the mysterious crew behind the robbery before they strike the museum a second time. As the clock winds down\, Cape enlists aid from some unlikely allies to lay a trap for a ghost who has no intention of being caught–nor of leaving any witnesses alive to tell the tale.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Merrill Joan Gerber presents Revelation at the Food Bank
DESCRIPTION:These powerful essays share critical moments of a writer’s life: scenes from sixty years of passionate married love; suicides faced and suicide contemplated; trauma at the DMV; a night lost searching for a harpsichord in the mountains of Florence\, Italy; the tale of a beloved cousin whose plane is shot down by Japanese Zeros; and a precious friendship between two women writers derailed by the poisons of religion and politics. In the titular essay (included in Best American Essays 2023) a food bank\, assuaging the pandemic’s terrors with gifts of food and prayers\, becomes a portal for intimate confidences entrusted to us by a voice of unspoiled authenticity and perennial vigor.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Andrew Shtulman discusses Learning to Imagine
DESCRIPTION:Imagination is thought to be the province of childhood–the stuff of free play and unrestrained ideas. Then comes the dull routine of adulthood\, stifling creativity. In fact\, the opposite is true. Andrew Shtulman shows that imagination is not inherited at birth\, nor does it diminish with age. It grows as we do\, through education and reflection.

SUMMARY:Vromans: Enrico Gnaulati discusses Flourishing Love
DESCRIPTION:Flourishing Love is a secular defense of marriage and long-term intimate partnership. It rejects a moral-religious code to govern love lives and instead puts its faith in the human potential for couples to be benevolent\, loyal\, and forgiving to preserve and enhance their romantic union. Dr Gnaulati draws on a variety of sources to present the joint emotional upkeep necessary to make an intimate relationship not just satisfactory\, but vital\, and to illustrate what these lasting bonds look like. The latest science\, anecdotes from his own 30-year marriage as well as from his psychotherapy practice\, the musings of ancient and contemporary philosophers\, and real-life interviews from partners in long-term happy marriages and intimate unions are all used to reveal the secrets to a successful romantic partnership. The result is a how-to of engaging in attentive and sensitive communication; employing a fairness habit of mind around household chores\, childrearing responsibilities\, and finances; optimally moving through and beyond conflict; keeping an erotic spark alive; and ethically handling urges to stray outside the couple. A must-read for all those who crave meaning\, happiness\, and fulfilment in life and need their romantic partnerships to help\, not hinder\, in this endeavor.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Ron White Discusses 'On Great Fields'
DESCRIPTION:Before 1862\, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain had rarely left his home state of Maine\, where he was a trained minister and mild-mannered professor at Bowdoin College. His colleagues were shocked when he volunteered for the Union army\, but he was undeterred and later became known as one of the North’s greatest heroes: On the second day at Gettysburg\, after running out of ammunition at Little Round Top\, he ordered his men to wield their bayonets in a desperate charge down a rocky slope that routed the Confederate attackers. Despite being wounded at Petersburg–and told by two surgeons he would die–Chamberlain survived the war\, going on to be elected governor of Maine four times and serve as president of Bowdoin College. \nHow did a stuttering young boy come to be fluent in nine languages and even teach speech and rhetoric? How did a trained minister find his way to the battlefield? Award-winning historian Ronald C. White delves into these contradictions in this cradle-to-grave biography of General Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain\, from his upbringing in rural Maine to his tenacious\, empathetic military leadership and his influential postwar public service\, exploring a question that still plagues so many veterans: How do you make a civilian life of meaning after having experienced the extreme highs and lows of war? \nChamberlain is familiar to millions from Michael Shaara’s now-classic novel of the Civil War\, The Killer Angels\, and Ken Burns’s timeless miniseries The Civil War\, but in this book \, White captures the complex and inspiring man behind the hero . Heavily illustrated and featuring nine detailed maps\, this gripping\, impeccably researched portrait illuminates one of the most admired but least known figures in our nation’s bloodiest conflict.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Brooke Wentz\, in conversation with Anthony Davis\, discusses Transfigured New York: Interviews with Experimental Artists and Musicians\, 1980-1990
DESCRIPTION:Transfigured New York presents conversations with iconic\, genre-bending artists who shaped the sounds of experimental movements like no-wave\, avant-jazz\, and electronic music. As an undergrad in the 1980s\, Brooke Wentz hosted the show Transfigured Night on Columbia University’s WKCR-FM\, discussing art and ideas with avant-garde music luminaries. She unearths these candid interviews before only first broadcast from cassettes and reel-to-reel tapes\, letting readers today feel the excitement and creative energy of the 1980s New York underground scene. Musicians and artists\, now icons of their craft\, tell their stories and share their thoughts about the creative process\, capturing the ambition and energy that animated their work. Legends in the making like Bill Frisell\, Philip Glass\, and Laurie Anderson convey what it was like to be a struggling artist in 1980s New York when the city was alive with possibilities. Others who were well known at the time\, including John Cage\, La Monte Young\, and Ravi Shankar\, advocated for their distinctive ideas about art and opened up about their creative lives. Featuring an astonishing range of interviews with Subotnick\, Joan Tower\, Steve Reich\, Glenn Branca\, Joan La Barbara\, Living Colour\, Arthur Russell\, John Lurie\, Eric Bogosian\, Bill T. Jones\, and many more Transfigured New York provides new insight into the city’s cultural landscape in this era. It is a one-of-a-kind account of one of the most exhilarating and inventive periods for art and culture in New York City’s history.
