SUMMARY:Vroman's: Hillary Rodham Clinton and Louise Penny discussing State of Terror
DESCRIPTION:This ticketed event will take place on Crowdcast. There will not be an opportunity to submit questions during the live event\, but you can submit questions when you purchase your ticket\, at check out. \nABOUT THE BOOK:\nAfter a tumultuous period in American politics\, a new administration has just been sworn in\, and to everyone’s surprise the president chooses a political enemy for the vital position of secretary of state. \nThere is no love lost between the president of the United States and Ellen Adams\, his new secretary of state. But it’s a canny move on the part of the president. With this appointment\, he silences one of his harshest critics\, since taking the job means Adams must step down as head of her multinational media conglomerate. \nAs the new president addresses Congress for the first time\, with Secretary Adams in attendance\, Anahita Dahir\, a young foreign service officer (FSO) on the Pakistan desk at the State Department\, receives a baffling text from an anonymous source. \nToo late\, she realizes the message was a hastily coded warning. \nWhat begins as a series of apparent terrorist attacks is revealed to be the beginning of an international chess game involving the volatile and Byzantine politics of Pakistan\, Afghanistan\, and Iran; the race to develop nuclear weapons in the region; the Russian mob; a burgeoning rogue terrorist organization; and an American government set back on its heels in the international arena. \nAs the horrifying scale of the threat becomes clear\, Secretary Adams and her team realize it has been carefully planned to take advantage of four years of an American government out of touch with international affairs\, out of practice with diplomacy\, and out of power in the places where it counts the most. \nTo defeat such an intricate\, carefully constructed conspiracy\, it will take the skills of a unique team: a passionate young FSO; a dedicated journalist; and a smart\, determined\, but as yet untested new secretary of state. \nState of Terror is a unique and utterly compelling international thriller cowritten by Hillary Rodham Clinton\, the 67th secretary of state\, and Louise Penny\, a multiple award-winning #1 New York Times bestselling novelist. (Simon & Schuster/St. Martin’s Press) \n  \nThis event ticket includes a hardcover copy of State of Terror with signed bookplate\, as well as online access to the event for your household. You will receive a link and password to attend the Crowdcast event on the afternoon of Thursday\, October 14th. \n  \nPlease note: Ticket options include in-store pick up; shipped domestically (allow up to 3 weeks for delivery); or shipped internationally (allow 4-5 weeks for delivery). Books will be mailed to you shortly after the event. For those who choose in-store pick up\, you will be contacted by Vroman’s via email shortly after the event and alerted as to when your book will be ready for pick up. \n  \nQuestions? Award-winning author Myriam J. A. Chancy masterfully charts the inner lives of the characters affected by the disaster-Richard\, an expat and wealthy water-bottling executive with a secret daughter; the daughter\, Anne\, an architect who drafts affordable housing structures for a global NGO; a small-time drug trafficker\, Leopold\, who pines for a beautiful call girl; Sonia and her business partner\, Dieudonné\, who are followed by a man they believe is the vodou spirit of death; Didier\, an emigrant musician who drives a taxi in Boston; Sara\, a mother haunted by the ghosts of her children in an IDP camp; her husband\, Olivier\, an accountant forced to abandon the wife he loves; their son\, Jonas\, who haunts them both; and Ma Lou\, the old woman selling produce in the market who remembers them all. SUMMARY:Vroman's: Ryan Hampton discusses Unsettled: How the Purdue Pharma Bankruptcy Failed the Victims of the American Overdose Crisis
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast.\nRegister for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/ryan-hampton \nIn September 2019\, Purdue Pharma–the maker of OxyContin and a company controlled by the infamous billionaire Sackler family–filed for bankruptcy to protect itself from 2\,600 lawsuits for its role in fueling the U.S. overdose crisis. Author and activist Ryan Hampton served as co-chair of the official creditors committee that acted as a watchdog during the process\, one of only four victims appointed among representatives of big insurance companies\, hospitals\, and pharmacies. He entered the case believing that exposing the Sacklers and mobilizing against Purdue would be enough to right the scales of justice. But he soon learned that behind closed doors\, justice had plenty of other competition–and it came with a hefty price tag.\nUnsettled is the inside story of Purdue’s excruciating Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings\, the company’s eventual restructuring\, and the Sackler family’s evasion of any true accountability. It’s also the untold story of how a group of determined ordinary people tried to see justice done against the odds–and in the face of brutal opposition from powerful institutions and even government representatives. \nAlthough America was envisioned as an equitable place\, where the vulnerable are protected from the greed of the powerful\, the corporate-bankruptcy process betrays those values. In its heart of hearts\, this system is built to shield the ultra-wealthy\, exploit loopholes for political power\, promote gross wealth inequality\, and allow companies such as Purdue Pharma to run amok. \nThe real story of the Purdue bankruptcy wasn’t that the billion-dollar corporation was a villain\, a serial federal offender. No matter what the media said\, Purdue didn’t do this alone. They were aided and abetted by the very systems and institutions that were supposed to protect Americans. Even on-your-side elected officials worked against Purdue’s victims–maintaining the status quo at all costs. \nAmericans deserve to know exactly who is responsible for failing to protect people over profits–and what a human life is worth to corporations\, billionaires\, and lawmakers. Unsettled is what happened behind closed doors–the story of a sick\, broken system that destroyed millions of lives and let the Sacklers off almost scot-free. Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/kate-bowler \nIt’s hard to give up on the feeling that the life you really want is just out of reach. A beach body by summer. A trip to Disneyland around the corner. A promotion on the horizon. Everyone wants to believe that they are headed toward good\, better\, best. But what happens when the life you hoped for is put on hold indefinitely? \nKate Bowler believed that life was a series of unlimited choices\, until she discovered\, at age 35\, that her body was wracked with cancer. In No Cure for Being Human\, she searches for a way forward as she mines the wisdom (and absurdity) of today’s “best life now” advice industry\, which insists on exhausting positivity and on trying to convince us that we can out-eat\, out-learn\, and out-perform our humanness. We are\, she finds\, as fragile as the day we were born. \nWith dry wit and unflinching honesty\, Kate Bowler grapples with her diagnosis\, her ambition\, and her faith as she tries to come to terms with her limitations in a culture that says anything is possible. She finds that we need one another if we’re going to tell the truth: Life is beautiful and terrible\, full of hope and despair and everything in between–and there’s no cure for being human. Not because he’s into both guys and girls. Not because his father has some drinking issues. Not because his friends are always bringing him their drama. No\, the hole in Gio’s life takes the shape of his birth mom\, who left Gio\, his brother\, and his father when Gio was nine years old. For eight years\, he never heard a word from her . . . and now\, just as he’s started to get his life together\, she’s back. \nIt’s hard for Gio to know what to do. Complicating things further\, Gio’s started to hang out with David\, a new guy on the basketball team. Are they friends? More than friends? At first\, Gio’s not sure . . . especially because he’s not sure what he wants from anyone right now. \nThere are no easy answers to love — whether it’s family love or friend love or romantic love. So when their school’s art budget faces cutbacks\, of course Natalie finds herself up against her nemesis once more. She’s fighting to direct the school’s first ever student-written play\, but for her small production to get funding\, the school’s award-winning band will have to lose it. Reid’s band. And he’s got no intention of letting the show go on. \nBut when their rivalry turns into an all-out prank war that goes too far\, Natalie and Reid have to face the music\, resulting in the worst compromise: writing and directing a musical. Together. At least if they deliver a sold-out show\, the school board will reconsider next year’s band and theater budget. Everyone could win. \nExcept Natalie and Reid. \nBecause after spending their entire lives in competition\, they have absolutely no idea how to be co-anything. And they certainly don’t know how to deal with the feelings that are inexplicably\, weirdly\, definitely developing between them… (Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers)

Sara\, who knows no one in Northern Ireland\, is jobless\, carless\, friendless–all but a prisoner in her own house. When a blood-soaked old woman beats on the door\, insisting the house is hers before being bundled back to her care facility\, Sara begins to understand the house has a terrible history her husband never intended for her to discover. As the two women form a bond over their shared traumas\, Sara finds the strength to stand up to her abuser\, and Mary–silent for six decades–is finally ready to tell her story . . . \nThrough the counterpoint voices–one modern Englishwoman\, one Northern Irish farmgirl speaking from half a century earlier–Stuart Neville offers a chilling and gorgeous portrait of violence and resilience in this truly haunting narrative. A romantic and intellectual attachment soon morphs into an interspecies love triangle that pushes hard at the boundaries of consciousness and the question of what we know and how we know it. \nWhat if it were possible to speak to the members of another species–to converse with them\, not just give commands or coach them but to really have an exchange of ideas and a meeting of minds? Did apes have God? Did they have souls? Did they know about death and redemption? About prayer? The economy\, rockets\, space? Did they miss the jungle? Did they even know what the jungle was? DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK:  https://www.crowdcast.io/e/p2phyt4b \n  \nHe was seventeen when an all-white jury sentenced him to prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Now a pioneering lawyer\, he recalls the journey that led to his exoneration–and inspired him to devote his life to fighting the many injustices in our legal system. \nSeventeen years old and facing nearly thirty years behind bars\, Jarrett Adams sought to figure out the why behind his fate. Sustained by his mother and aunts who brought him back from the edge of despair through letters of prayer and encouragement\, Adams became obsessed with our legal system in all its damaged glory. After studying how his constitutional rights to effective counsel had been violated\, he solicited the help of the Wisconsin Innocence Project\, an organization that exonerates the wrongfully convicted\, and won his release after nearly ten years in prison. \nBut the journey was far from over. Adams took the lessons he learned through his incarceration and worked his way through law school with the goal of helping those who\, like himself\, had faced our legal system at its worst. After earning his law degree\, he worked with the New York Innocence Project\, becoming the first exoneree ever hired by the nonprofit as a lawyer. In his first case with the Innocence Project\, he argued before the same court that had convicted him a decade earlier–and won. \nIn this cinematic story of hope and full-circle redemption\, Adams draws on his life and the cases of his clients to show the racist tactics used to convict young men of color\, the unique challenges facing exonerees once released\, and how the lack of equal representation in our courts is a failure not only of empathy but of our collective ability to uncover the truth. Redeeming Justice is an unforgettable firsthand account of the limits–and possibilities–of our country’s system of law. SUMMARY:Vroman's: Susan H. Kamei\, in conversation with Teresa Watanabe\, discusses When Can We Go Back to America?
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event and will take place on Crowdcast. Register for FREE ahead of time to save your spot and get an email reminder! Scroll down to purchase your copy of the book from Vroman’s. \nEVENT LINK:  https://www.crowdcast.io/e/an51m2pv \n  \nIn this dramatic and page-turning narrative history of Japanese Americans before\, during\, and after their World War II incarceration\, Susan H. Kamei weaves the voices of over 130 individuals who lived through this tragic episode\, most of them as young adults. \nIt’s difficult to believe it happened here\, in the Land of the Free: After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941\, the United States government forcibly removed more than 120\,000 persons of Japanese ancestry from the Pacific Coast and imprisoned them in desolate detention camps until the end of World War II just because of their race. \nIn what Secretary Norman Y. Mineta describes as a “landmark book\,” he and others who lived through this harrowing experience tell the story of their incarceration and the long-term impact of this dark period in American history. For the first time\, why and how these tragic events took place are interwoven with more than 130 individual voices of those who were unconstitutionally incarcerated\, many of them children and young adults. \nNow more than ever\, their words will resonate with readers who are confronting questions about racial identity\, immigration\, and citizenship\, and what it means to be an American.
