SUMMARY:USC PAM: Sacred Sand Mandala
DESCRIPTION:USC Pacific Asia Museum is proud to host Tibetan monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery in South India. They will spend four days creating a Sand Mandala\, a Tibetan Buddhist tradition that involves the creation and destruction of paintings made using colored sand. Once completed\, it is dismantled as a symbol of the Buddhist belief in the transitory nature of material life. \nThe opening blessing ceremony will take place on Wednesday\, January 24th at 2:00PM and the closing dissolution ceremony will take place on Saturday\, January 27 at 3PM. DESCRIPTION:USC PAM presents exhibited artists Ken Lum and Jennifer Ling Datchuk from Another Beautiful Country as they discuss their work in an intimate gallery conversation. Drawing from the Chinese translation of America\, (美國/měiguó) and the American-born Chinese abbreviation\, ABC\, Another Beautiful Country\, features artworks that portray nuanced interplays between Chinese American identities and representations\, challenging conventional notions of nationhood. Resisting stereotypes and globalization’s dehumanizing aspects\, Another Beautiful Country brings together artworks as scenes of cross-cultural sharing. \nFree with cost of admission \nRSVP recommended \nMore about the Artists: \nJennifer Ling Datchuk /玲 \nJennifer Ling Datchuk was born in Warren\, Ohio and raised in Brooklyn\, New York. Her work is an exploration of her layered identity – as a woman\, a Chinese woman\, as an “American\,”and as a third culture kid. Trained in ceramics\, Datchuk works with porcelain and other materials often associated with traditional women’s work\, such as textiles and hair\, to discuss fragility\, beauty\, femininity\, intersectionality\, identity\, and personal history. Through these materials\, she explores how Western beauty standards influenced the East\, how the non-white body is commodified and sold\, and how women’s – globally\, girls’ – work is still a major economic driver whose workers still struggle for equality. Datchuk holds an MFA in Artisanry from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and a BFA in Crafts from Kent State University. In 2017\, she received the Emerging Voices award from the American Craft Council\, and in 2020 was named a United States Artist Fellow in Craft. Her work is in the collections at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston\, San Antonio Museum of Art\, Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. She is an Assistant Professor of Ceramics at Arizona State University and lives and maintains a studio practice in Phoenix\, Arizona. \nKen Lum / 林蔭庭 \nKen Lum is an artist with an international exhibition record that includes Documenta\, the Venice Biennale\, Sao Paolo Bienal\, Shanghai Biennale\, Gwangju Biennale\, Carnegie Triennial and the Whitney Biennial. He is co-founder and founding editor of the Yishu Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art. He is a prolific writer and has given 6 keynote addresses including the 2022 congress of the International Association of Empirical Aesthetics in Philadelphia. A book of his writings titled Everything is Relevant: Writings on Art and Life 1991 – 2018 was published in 2020 by Concordia University Press. In 2020\, he wrote a screenplay titled The Cook about Chinese contract laborers in the 19th century. In 2021\, he penned a second screenplay about the forced expulsion of Chinese from Tacoma\, Washington Territory in 1885. Lum has realized numerous permanent public art commissions\, including co-curating Shanghai Modern: 1919 – 1945. A long-time professor\, Lum is currently the Marilyn Jordan Taylor Presidential Professor and Chair of the Department of Fine Arts\, Stuart Weitzman School of Design\, University of Pennsylvania.

SUMMARY:USC PAM: Stenciling Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn the history of stenciling and create your own artwork using different stenciling techniques with printmaking artist Kiyomi Fukui Nannery. We will discuss the idea of layering for creating an edition of identical prints and for creating variations of one-of-a-kind prints (monoprints). No prior experience is necessary. \nMaterials included \nTickets include complimentary admission to the museum.  \nMore About the Artist: \nKiyomi Fukui Nannery\, b. 1988\, was born in the U.S. and grew up in Japan as a daughter of a Zainichi Korean father and a Japanese mother. Her practice often deals with personal narratives and history exploring emotional internal landscapes. Her works aim to find beauty in difficulties and trauma\, ultimately yielding healing experiences. In addition to producing print-based artworks\, her works often involve participatory performance and fiber arts\, such as tatting and natural dye. At the core of her practice is an attempt to capture transient intimacy\, irrespective of media. She received an MFA in Printmaking from California State University Long\, Beach and a BFA in Graphic Design from La Sierra University. Her recent exhibitions include Seeds of Contemplation\, Biola University\, La Mirada\, CA; Yearning\, Boston Court Pasadena\, Pasadena\, CA; and Conversation on Conflict\, Painting and Sculpture Outpost\, Marysville\, CA\, and Flux Art Space\, Long Beach\, CA.

During this gallery tour\, Shang will provide an in-depth look at the extraordinary prints of Chinese artists from the 1980s to the present featured in the exhibition. \nMore About the Exhibition: \nImprinting In Time surveys printmaking by Chinese artists from the 1980s to the present\, examining the unique narrative of the medium within the contexts of cultural\, academic\, sociopolitical\, and economic changes in recent Chinese history. From its inception\, the woodblock has been given singular priority for articulating social commentary and nationalistic sentiments since the 1930s. The emergence of etching\, lithograph\, silkscreen\, and digital devices in the 1980s added new energy to the medium. In response to the current decline of printmaking in the art market\, a handful of artists are searching for ways to advance the medium and participate in global conversations. \n  \nMore About the Guest Speaker: \nDanielle Shang is a Los Angeles-based art historian and exhibition organizer. Her research focuses on the impact of globalization\, urban renewal\, social change\, and class restructuring on art-making and the narrative of art history. DESCRIPTION:The USC Pacific Asia Museum and artist Nick Dong invite you to participate in an intimate and healing artistic endeavor as part of Divine Immersion: The Experiential Art of Nick Dong. \nThis project emerged after a close friend of Dong’s lost her husband and all that remained was his wedding ring. Dong wanted to do something more meaningful and lasting than offering his sympathies. Given his background in metalsmithing\, Dong offered to craft their rings together\, forging a newly fashioned piece\, bringing positivity and healing to her grief. \nAs part of USC PAM’s special exhibition\, selected participants will be asked to bring two sentimental jewelry pieces or other personal objects to be “mended” together. Working collaboratively with the participant\, Dong will use the stories and memories of their relationship to guide the final design\, marrying the two pieces together to form a new personal item. Constructed in 1925\, the courtyard has transformed over the past 90 years to become an intercultural hub in Pasadena\, California\, transitioning from a private residence into a community-utilized space. \nAs USC PAM celebrates its 50th anniversary\, it is looking for ways to evolve in its accessibility and community service. These sessions are intended for conversations about the different ways in which this particular space in the museum can serve that goal.
