SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Kelly Yang\, in conversation with Lisa Ling\, discusses & signs The Take
DESCRIPTION:A provocative\, fast-paced novel about two creative women—a young writer fighting to be heard and an older producer clinging to relevancy—and the age reversal treatment that intertwines both of their lives…from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the beloved Front Desk series \nWould you sell your youth for $3 million? \nMaggie Wang\, a broke young Asian American writer\, needs a lifeline. Ingrid Parker\, a veteran white Hollywood producer with her career on the edge\, offers an irresistible deal: $3 million for ten experimental medical sessions to reverse her aging\, using Maggie as a transfusion partner\, and mentorship. \nFor Ingrid\, it’s a chance to reboot her fading career. For Maggie\, it’s access and freedom—money to support her parents and the connections to finally get her novel published. \nWhat starts as a professional transaction exchanging blood quickly becomes a complex psychological dance. As Maggie gains unprecedented access to Ingrid’s hard-earned wisdom\, Ingrid sees in Maggie a weapon against an industry that’s been trying to sideline her. \nAs their relationship intensifies\, the rules around aging begin to shift. So does the balance of power between the two women\, leaving both questioning who holds the upper hand and what they’re willing to sacrifice to succeed. \nSharp\, timely\, and utterly compelling\, The Take is perfect for readers of Yellowface and Such a Fun Age—a searing portrait of two women fighting to rewrite their story. \n  \nThis ticketed event is FREE and will take place at Vroman’s Bookstore\, located at 695 E. Colorado Blvd\, Pasadena\, CA 91101. \nThere is a ticket option that includes a book. A purchase of The Take from Vroman’s is greatly appreciated and makes events like this one possible. SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore" Amy Coombe discusses & signs Stay for a Spell
DESCRIPTION:A cursed princess must discover what her heart truly longs for in this charmingly cozy romantic fantasy for everyone who’s ever lost – or found – themselves in a bookshop. \nPrincess Tanadelle of the Widdenmar is disillusioned with life as a princess. She longs for real conversation\, the chance to build a life of her own making\, and uninterrupted reading time. \nDuring a routine royal visit to the town of Little Pepperidge\, Tandy’s dream comes true when she finds herself cursed to remain in a run-down bookshop until she unlocks her heart’s desire. Certain that someone will figure out how to break the curse eventually\, and delighted by the prospect of an entire bookstore of her own\, Tandy settles into life among the stacks. She finds it easy to exchange balls and endless state dinners for teetering piles of books and an irritatingly handsome pirate who seems bent on stealing her stock. \nShe even starts to believe she’s stumbled into her very own happily ever after. \nThere’s just one\, minor problem: as Tandy’s royal duties go unfulfilled\, her frantic parents start sending princes to woo her\, each one of them certain their kiss will break the curse. After all\, what more could a princess want but a prince?

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Lisa Lee\, in conversation with Muriel Leung\, discusses & signs American Han
DESCRIPTION:“A pulsating signal from the liminal zone where the American dream meets the American nightmare.” –Viet Thanh Nguyen\, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Sympathizer \nJane and her brother Kevin Kim embody the model minority myth until both depart from the path: Jane drops out of law school without telling her parents\, and her brother Kevin gives up his promising tennis career and cuts himself off from the family. Their parents feel equally lost in a country that claims to support them and yet in which they can find no place. When Kevin goes missing\, no one recognizes his absence as the warning sign it is\, until it erupts in a moment that indicts them all. \nBoth deeply serious and absurdly funny\, AMERICAN HAN is a story about striving and assimilation\, difficult love\, and family fidelity. A searing and probing portrait that challenges assumptions about the immigrant experience\, Lisa Lee’s debut introduces a powerful new voice on the literary landscape. \n“A fantastic sleight-of-hand. Lee makes us look one way while all sorts of stuff comes into focus around us. This is a novel about a singular and eccentric family but yields understanding about so much more. A beautiful\, important novel that will leave a mark.” — Percival Everett\, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of James

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Paul Fischer\, in conversation with Drew McWeeny\, discusses & signs The Last Kings of Hollywood
DESCRIPTION:The untold\, intimate story of how three young visionaries–Francis Ford Coppola\, George Lucas\, and Steven Spielberg–revolutionized American cinema\, creating the most iconic films in history while risking everything\, redefining friendship\, and shaping Hollywood as we know it. \nIn the summer of 1967\, as the old Hollywood studio system was dying\, an intense\, uncompromising young film school graduate named George Lucas walked onto the Warner Bros backlot for his first day working as an assistant to another up-and-coming\, largely-unknown filmmaker\, a boisterous father of two called Francis Ford Coppola. At the exact same time\, across town on the Universal Studios lot\, a film-obsessed twenty-year-old from a peripatetic Jewish family\, Steven Spielberg\, longed to break free from his apprenticeship for the struggling studio and become a film director in his own right. \nWithin a year\, the three men would become friends. Spielberg\, prioritizing security\, got his seven-year contract directing television. Lucas and Coppola\, hungry for independence\, left Hollywood for San Francisco to found an alternative studio\, American Zoetrope\, and make films without answering to corporate capitalism. \nBased on extensive research and hundreds of original interviews with the inner circle of these Hollywood icons\, The Last Kings of Hollywood tells the thrilling\, dramatic inside story of how\, over the next fifteen years\, the three filmmakers rivalled and supported each other\, fell out and reconciled\, and struggled to reinvent popular American cinema. Along the way\, Coppola directed The Godfather\, then the highest-grossing film of all-time\, until Spielberg surpassed it with Jaws — whose record Lucas broke with Star Wars\, which Spielberg surpassed again with E.T. By the early 1980s\, they were the richest\, best-known filmmakers in the world\, each with an empire of their own. The Last Kings of Hollywood is an unprecedented chronicle of their rise\, their dreams and demons\, their triumphs and their failures — intimate\, extraordinary\, and supremely entertaining.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Rhae Lynn Barnes & David M. Henkin discuss & sign\, Darkology: Blackface and the American Way of Entertainment & Out of the Ballpark: How to Think about Baseball
DESCRIPTION:Never before has the disturbing story of blackface and its piercing reflection of American society been so comprehensively told. With Darkology\, Princeton historian Rhae Lynn Barnes meticulously unravels the complex\, subterranean\, and all-too-often expunged history of “Darkology”–the insidious study\, commodification\, and dehumanization of Black life\, through which performers caricatured the enslaved and formerly enslaved for their supposed subservience and happy demeanor. \n  \nGiven the extraordinary research reflected in Darkology\, it’s not surprising that Barnes spent twenty years tracking down “fading photographs\, old movies\, bureaucratic detritus\, moldy scripts\, and living witnesses\, assembling an impressive archive that allowed her to demonstrate the astonishingly broad reach of blackface minstrelsy” (Laurel Thatcher Ulrich). Painstakingly piecing together these scattered shards of evidence\, Barnes reveals the shocking extent to which blackface took center stage in every era of American history. \n  \nThis was not a fringe activity. By 1830\, as political resistance to slavery grew\, blackface exploded from a niche performance into a venomous national export. Within a decade\, hardly a theater in the country didn’t put on minstrel shows. Following the Civil War\, this grotesque entertainment soared\, seeping from professional theaters into everyday amateur shows\, print\, and advertisements. It was everywhere: Elks Clubs\, religious institutions\, battlefields\, universities\, and schools. It wasn’t just in the Jim Crow era; it defined it. The very name “Jim Crow” derives from minstrelsy’s founding character. \n  \nDarkology dismantles the myth that blackface was a fleeting\, post-Civil War phenomenon. Even in eras known for liberal progressivism\, it flourished. Barnes unearths the startling fact that four-term president Franklin D. Roosevelt was a devotee who died hours before a blackface show he had commissioned at Warm Springs. It permeated U.S. military bases and was even used in World War II Japanese American concentration camps and German POW camps as a bizarre tool of “Americanization.” \n  \nAfter WWII\, the tide began to turn as Black veterans and mothers in places like suburban California protested the practice in schools. Still\, blackface performances proved resilient\, surfacing as late as 1969 at the University of Vermont. Even as the Civil Rights movement fought for equality\, blackface remained present in American politics and white supremacist organizing through the Nixon and Ford administrations\, its legacy still percolating in variable forms today.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: TICKETED - Jordan Harper\, in conversation with S.A. Cosby\, discusses & signs A Violent Masterpiece
DESCRIPTION:The next epic crime novel from Jordan Harper\, a story of Los Angeles power brokers and those at the edge\, and a single shattering incident that threatens to bring it all crashing down. \nLos Angeles\, right now. America with its back up against the wall. This Frankenstein’s monster of crimes and lurid dreams sewn together into something like a city. \nA city ready to explode: A Hollywood pedophile is arrested\, and is ready to tear down the city to get his freedom. A young woman goes missing — and men in black rubber gloves who look like cops clean out her apartment in the middle of the night. And the serial killer known as the LA Ripper is on the loose\, leaving tragic/graphic/brutal crime scenes in his wake. Three people trying to keep their heads above the dirty water will find themselves coming together to unite these strands into one enormous\, unspeakable crime … \nJake Deal is a gonzo live-streaming nightcrawler\, beaming the city’s chaos straight to his audience of blood-hungry subscribers\, giving them the view from the top of the mushroom cloud — until a job he can’t refuse drags him back into his old life of Hollywood glamour\, drugs\, sex and sleaze. Armed with cameras and hidden mics\, he’ll infiltrate private clubs\, gather high-class dirt — and stumble onto a conspiracy woven into the center of LA’s most powerful men\, who call themselves “The Kids in the Candy Store.” \nDoug Gibson is a street lawyer\, who fights for his clients against the army of cops\, prosecutors and judges – he is the knife they bring to the gunfight. But when he’s hired by a Hollywood pedophile ready to sell out his friends for a chance for freedom\, he’ll take on a fight bigger than he could have imagined. And when his client “commits suicide” in prison\, Gibson will have to stop being a weapon – and become a warrior. \nKara Delgado works for an underground private concierge company – a make-a-wish foundation for the terminally rich. She scores drugs\, makes connections\, and plans multi-million dollar sex parties. She has learned the secret truth of this world: there are no rules\, only prices. Her best friend Phoebe has gone missing\, and Kara’s the only person who knows that Phoebe’s place was wiped clean of evidence by men in black rubber gloves. But when she begins to unravel the mystery of what happened to Phoebe\, and its connection to the killer known as the LA Ripper\, it will drag her into the dark heart of the city. \nAs Jake\, Doug and Kara all investigate these crimes\, they’ll encounter ketamine-addled sitcom stars\, bloody riots\, homeless gangsters\, a killer cop on death row\, secret vaults in Beverly Hills\, tech-bro orgies\, medical cannibals\, true crime junkies\, private security wet-work teams\, reality shows\, street takeovers\, car chases\, coyotes\, a sadistic Tarzan\, and a three day\, fifty million dollar wedding\, before everything is revealed and they must each make their choice about how to fight back in this violent world before the bloody\, blazing conclusion.\n \nThis is a ticketed program and will take place at Vroman’s Bookstore\, located at 695 E. Colorado Blvd\, Pasadena\, CA 91101. \nYour Eventbrite ticket will include a copy of A Violent Masterpiece\, to be handed out at check-in on the night of the program.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Mario Garcia discusses & signs Rupert García: The Making of an American Artist\, a Testimonio
DESCRIPTION:This is the first biography of the renowned American Chicano visual artist and activist Rupert García\, drawing on fifty hours of interviews conducted over thirty years and accompanied by eighty images. This in-depth oral history gives an unparalleled look at García’s life and work\, tracing his evolution as an artist and the political upheavals that shaped his life and worldview. \nMario T. García’s testimonio places Rupert García’s art in historical perspective\, from his beginnings as a working-class Mexican American from California’s Central Valley\, his coming of age in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War\, his involvement in the antiwar movement during the San Francisco State student strike in 1968-69\, and his participation in the Chicano Movement and beyond. Influenced by history and politics\, García’s vital works of art represent a changing world through the eyes of an artist\, speaking to issues of poverty\, racism\, capitalism\, war\, and the role of the artist in society. \nHis art–from revolutionary silkscreen posters to monumental pastels to portraits of political icons like Frida Kahlo\, Che Guevara\, and Dolores Huerta–serves to critique history and reassess it. It is work that will endure for generations to come.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Steven J. Ross discusses & signs The Secret War Against Hate
DESCRIPTION:From the author of Pulitzer Prize finalist Hitler in Los Angeles\, the definitive story of the intrepid activists and spies who fought against a resurgent movement of hate in America. \nAmericans today like to believe that the end of World War II brought a new era of tolerance in the United States. But antisemitism and racism went up-not down-after the war’s end. Violence broke out in cities across the country\, and the number of organized hate groups more than doubled from 1940 to 1946. In this shocking account of a resurgence of White Supremacy in America\, celebrated historian Steven J. Ross reveals how four key leaders-Emory Burke\, J. B. Stoner\, James Madole\, and George Lincoln Rockwell-worked together to “finish the job Hitler had begun\,” launching deadly attacks on Jews and African Americans and building a network of terrorists across the U.S. In response to this “war of hate\,” three men-Arnold Forster of the Anti–Defamation League\, George Mintzer of the American Jewish Committee\, and James Sheldon of the Non–Sectarian Anti–Nazi League-along with dozens of men and women\, launched a multipronged effort: They infiltrated\, monitored\, and undermined these hate groups\, putting their own safety on the line and scoring important victories that\, today\, have been all but forgotten. \nTracing the extraordinary work of these unsung heroes\, The Secret War Against Hate provides a groundbreaking reconsideration of the legacy of the “Good War\,” and essential reading on how America today can beat hate once again and build a just and united nation.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Alyssa Villaire discusses & signs The Neon Sky
DESCRIPTION:For fans of Stephanie Garber and Maggie Stiefvater comes the bewitching sequel to The Glittering Edge\, where magic is real\, witches make irresistible boyfriends\, and keeping secrets is dangerous–but not as dangerous as the truth. \nPenny Emberly didn’t expect to fall head over heels for Alonso De Luca last summer–or to discover that he’s a witch. Together with their friend Corey Barrion\, they managed to save her mother from a deadly spell. Now autumn has arrived\, and Penny believes they can take on anything. \nBut darkness is descending on the small town of Idlewood. Corey is desperate to undo the bloody legacy that made his family rich. The price\, however\, is steep: to unravel the magical bargain made by his grandfather\, Corey must take a life. \nAs Corey wrestles with an impossible choice\, Alonso begins to change. The more he pushes the limits of his magic\, the more volatile\, violent\, and possessive he becomes. When tragedy strikes one of their classmates\, the trio is forced to confront a terrifying question: is Alonso being consumed by something that’s bent on the destruction of everyone around him–especially Penny and Corey? \nAs supernatural forces drive them apart\, Penny\, Corey\, and Alonso must decide what they’re willing to sacrifice before more blood is spilled–even if it means losing each other.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Natalie Lemle discusses & signs Artifacts
DESCRIPTION:For readers of The Cloisters and Counterfeit\, Natalie Lemle’s debut novel offers an insider’s view into the world of stolen artifacts and the hidden networks that link museums to organized crime\, when a woman is forced to remember the summer she spent on an archaeological dig in Italy\, as everyone she knew then may now be in danger. \nSuccessful trusts and estates attorney Lena Connolly is asked by a colleague to assist on a case: the Italian government claims an artifact was looted and sold to a museum illegally\, and is seeking repatriation. The object in question is a cup made of dichroic glass\, which would have been rare even in Ancient Rome\, let alone thousands of years later. \nLena has done everything she can to put the study abroad summer she spent on an archaeological dig in the Italian Alps behind her. Her dreams of being an archaeologist were shattered when her mentor\, Cyrille\, disappeared\, and her enigmatic boyfriend Giamma went dark\, but with this new case\, the past comes roaring back. \nTold in alternating timelines\, Artifacts follows young Lena as she falls in love with both archaeology and Giamma on the streets of Torino while her adult self pieces together what truly happened on the dig\, now a fully restored Roman villa with World Heritage status. The dichroic cup\, Lena discovers\, may have been taken from the very site she helped unearth. \nPowerful and exuberant\, Natalie Lemle’s Artifacts brings readers behind the museum glass and asks questions about cultural heritage and the historical preservation of our shared sense of humanity.

SUMMARY:Pasadena Heritage: Explore Historic Architecture in the Playhouse Village
DESCRIPTION:The Pasadena Playhouse Historic District includes approximately 34 buildings that tell the story of Pasadena’s eastward growth in the 1920s and 1930s\, as the city shifted from its agricultural roots into a center of tourism\, culture\, and design. This period of development brought a mix of architectural styles that still define the district today\, most notably Art Deco\, Spanish Colonial Revival\, and Mediterranean Revival. \nThis walking tour takes a closer look at how these styles came together during a moment of real growth and change in Pasadena. Along the way\, we’ll stop at landmarks like the Scottish Rite Cathedral\, the United Artists Theatre\, and the Warner Building\, along with other buildings that reflect the energy and optimism of the period. \nJoin Pasadena Heritage as they explore how architecture and development shaped this district\, looking at both the original vision for the area and how it continues to evolve today.
