SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Jen Pastiloff\, in conversation with Henry Czerny\, discusses & signs Proof of Life: Let Go\, Let Love\, and Stop Looking for Permission to Live Your Life
DESCRIPTION:An urgent rallying cry to stop holding back and start living life on your terms. \nJen Pastiloff convinced herself My life is fine and fine’s enough\, until the whisper that something was missing turned full-on scream. \nThis is Pastiloff’s account of how she reclaimed her voice and desire by radically changing her life. She did this despite believing that change equaled death ever since her beloved father died when she was eight. (Much to her shock\, change did not equal death.) She shows us it is never too late to begin again\, or to let go of stories like: I don’t deserve this; I don’t get to be happy; no one will love me; I’m too old\, to name a few. \nThrough this book\, you’ll quiet your Inner Asshole\, participate in the cathartic process of Shame Loss\, ignore the Imaginary Time Gods\, use creativity as a portal into healing and connection\, and become your own permission slip. Complete with takeaways in Jen’s signature style\, creativity prompts\, and poetry\, Proof of Life is funny\, inspiring\, and full of love. This book is a reminder that your birthright is not stress or shame and that you don’t have to show proof that you are worthy or deserving. You are your own proof of life.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Dr. Julie Taylor discusses & signs The Hormone Manual
DESCRIPTION:From hormone specialist and functional medicine doctor\, Dr. Julie Taylor\, comes a paradigm-shifting guidebook to help women optimize their hormones\, starting from birth\, through every stage of life\, so they can reverse their symptoms\, prevent disease\, and thrive as they age. \nHave the vibrant life you’ve always wanted. No matter your age or stage. \nWe have a manual for everything from our smartphones to our printers to our refrigerators. But where is the manual for our most important asset? \nWhere is the manual for you? \nWe’re all different\, and there’s no one-size-fits-all rulebook. But there are universal truths that apply to all of us at every stage. Dr. Julie Taylor understands this. After being disillusioned by the lack of solutions within conventional medicine–a system aimed at treating not preventing diseases and disorders–she walked away from her medical residency in search of something better. A way to stop diseases before they even start. \nAnd now\, Dr. Taylor has created a Manual just for women. One where she starts at the very beginning and shares paradigm-shifting advice that details a woman’s needs from birth through her senior years. Dr. Julie believes that when a person’s hormones are balanced\, everything changes for the better. And she has proof: from physical to mental to relational transformations–Dr. Taylor has seen it all. \nThis Manual filled with carefully crafted\, age-specific guidance was written so that you can see yourself reflected in its pages. No matter what age or stage you’re in\, know that you do not have to suffer with symptoms and sickness. The buck stops with you. Your body is your airplane\, and you are the pilot. You can function at your best and feel better than ever. Dr. Taylor is providing you with the Manual. \nNow go live!

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Sarah James discusses Last Stop Union Station
DESCRIPTION:Murder\, movie stars\, and mystery await those who climb aboard this cross-country train\, inspired by the real-life history of the Hollywood Victory Caravan \nHollywood\, 1942. Jacqueline Love’s acting career is flailing. Suddenly on the wrong side of 40\, parts are drying up\, directors are calling her “difficult\,” and Humphrey Bogart has definitely stopped taking her calls. Desperate to cling to stardom\, Jackie takes the only gig that will have her: the Hollywood Victory Caravan\, a train full of movie stars crossing the country to fundraise for the war effort. Jackie wouldn’t call herself patriotic\, but with her life’s work on the line\, she’ll do anything. \nWhen a fellow star dies on board\, everyone assumes the death was a tragic accident-but Jackie isn’t so sure. Stuck in Chicago’s Union Station\, Jackie enlists the help of Grace\, one of the few women in the police force\, to investigate. But “difficult” outside of a movie set is dangerous\, and when the pair fall into a homegrown Nazi scheme\, Jackie must ask herself what’s more important: her career\, or her country?

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Meg Waite Clayton discusses and signs Typewriter Beach
DESCRIPTION:Set in Carmel-by-the-Sea and Hollywood\, Typewriter Beach is an unforgettable story of the unlikely friendship between an Oscar-nominated screenwriter and a young actress hoping to be Alfred Hitchcock’s new star. \n1957. Isabella Giori is ten months into a standard seven-year studio contract when she auditions with Hitchcock. Just weeks later\, she is sequestered by the studio’s “fixer” in a tiny Carmel cottage\, waiting and dreading. \nMeanwhile\, next door\, Léon Chazan is annoyed as hell when Iz interrupts his work on yet another screenplay he won’t be able to sell\, because he’s been blacklisted. Soon\, they’re together in his roadster\, speeding down the fog-shrouded Big Sur coast. \n2018. Twenty-six-year-old screenwriter Gemma Chazan\, in Carmel to sell her grandfather’s cottage\, finds a hidden safe full of secrets–raising questions about who the screenwriter known simply as Chazan really was\, and whether she can live up to his name. \nIn graceful prose and with an intimate understanding of human nature\, Meg Waite Clayton captures the joys and frustrations of being a writer\, being a woman\, being a star\, and being in love. Typewriter Beach is the story of two women separated by generations–a tale of ideas and ideals\, passion and persistence\, creativity\, politics\, and family. \n  \nMeg Waite Clayton is the New York Times bestselling author of eight previous novels\, including the Good Morning America Buzz Pick and New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice The Postmistress of Paris\, The Last Train to London\, and The Wednesday Sisters. Her books have been published in twenty-four languages\, and have been finalists for the Bellwether Prize (now the PEN Bellwether)\, the National Jewish Book Award\, and the Langum Prize. She also writes for major newspapers and magazines\, mentors in the OpEd Project\, and is a member of the National Book Critics Circle and the California bar. She lives in California and Connecticut.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Local Author Day - Young Readers Edition - Introducing Kyriacos Vidalakis and Norah Lally
DESCRIPTION:My journey through faith was profoundly shaped by my father\, whose colorful and varied career brought unique experiences into my life. From cooking in France\, working at Universal Studios\, developing real estate\, to creating an Italian restaurant\, my father’s career took us around the world\, exposing me to adventures like tasting Szechuan rabbit heads and fried scorpions in China and exploring a decommissioned nuclear missile silo in Moscow. However\, his most impactful gift was sending my brother and me to the Missouri Military Academy (MMA) in Mexico\, Missouri\, the summer I was twelve. This was no ordinary summer camp. At MMA\, I faced rigorous military training: crawling under barbed wire\, rappelling down 50-foot walls\, and enduring homesickness that felt almost unbearable. It was in these moments of struggle that I found a deeper understanding of God’s presence in my life. \nThroughout my life\, it hasn’t been the amazing moments that have taught me God’s glory\, but rather the harsh and arduous obstacles I’ve encountered. I believe struggle is the key to developing both as a person and growing spiritually. MMA represented the greatest challenge of my young life\, and through this trial\, I grew tremendously—both spiritually and in understanding myself as a young man. In Murky Waters\, I recount my transformative experience at MMA\, where I navigated the emotional and physical demands of military life. Through the friendships I forged and the moments of deep reflection\, I discovered that faith\, resilience\, and God’s love can help overcome even the greatest obstacles. My story explores how the toughest trials can bring about the greatest growth\, revealing the power of spirituality in times of struggle. \n  \nNorah Lally presents Back to Bainbridge\n2024 CIBA Gertrude Warner Book Awards Grand Prize Winner for Middle Grade Fiction \nAmazon #1 New Release in Teen & Young Adult Fiction about Being a Teen \nA “moving\, empathetic must-read about growing up and discovering what matters.” -BookLife by Publishers \nWeekly Editor’s Pick” An] accomplished work that packs a big emotional punch…” -Readers’ Favorite” \n…emotively captures the struggles of a young teen as she tries to find a place that feels like home…” –IndieReader\, IR Approved \nWelcome to Bainbridge Avenue\, where fourteen-year-old Vicki’s life takes a bumpy turn. SUMMARY:Vroman's Local Author Day Introducing Carlos Vasquez\, S.L. Cook\, and Scott Coon
DESCRIPTION:This work is an exploration of masculinity penned by an author who unearthed the essence of true manhood under harrowing circumstances in prison serving a 20-year sentence. Vasquez’s work reveals how the rules he learned for survival and integrity behind bars are equally vital for men in the free world. \nS.L. Cook presents A Snow Leopard Names Midas\nAfter his girlfriend is kidnapped\, brutalized\, and left drugged in a filthy hotel\, Midas McNight is forced to return to a persona he buried years before: A ruthless and lethal black bag operator known to a chosen few as The Snow Leopard. \nBut that was a long time ago\, and Midas is not the same man. This wary and aging soldier now has no choice but to face a small army of former associates who want to eliminate him and everyone he cherishes. \n“A Snow Leopard Named Midas” goes to the heart of the anxiety and unease now pervasive throughout not only the United States but beyond its borders as well. Told through flawed survivors committed to a war against apathy and fear\, as well as enemies which\, due to sheer numbers and organization\, can never truly be overcome. \nThose trying to make incremental improvements in a world where wrong people inevitably win. \nScott Coon presents Godless Armageddon\nThom dies in World War II and enters a godless afterlife where souls are clouds upon a golden ocean around the Earth. \nHe blames himself for ending his family name. He doesn’t know why he never married because he’s buried it too deep: Thom is gay. \nTo help him\, Thom’s dad reaches out from inside a soul well-a monster made of captured souls. But all Thom sees is his father apologizing for something while dying in World War I. Determined to rescue his father\, Thom teaches himself how to fight the soul wells with weaponized memories. \nOthers want Thom to stop the soul wells before they unleash Earth’s Armageddon and consume all souls\, living and dead. But Thom just wants to atone for ending his family name.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Bruce Holsinger\, in conversation with Sara Sligar\, discusses & signs Culpability
DESCRIPTION: OPRAH’S BOOK CLUB PICK – “I was riveted until the very last shocking sentence “–Oprah Winfrey \nFrom the bestselling author of the “wise and addictive” (New York Times) The Gifted School comes a riveting family drama about moral responsibility in the age of artificial intelligence. \nWhen the Cassidy-Shaws’ autonomous minivan collides with an oncoming car\, killing an elderly couple\, seventeen-year-old Charlie is in the driver’s seat\, with his father\, Noah\, riding shotgun. In the back seat\, tweens Alice and Izzy are on their phones\, while their mother\, Lorelei\, a world leader in the field of artificial intelligence\, is absorbed in her work. Yet each family member harbors a secret\, implicating them each in the tragic accident. \nDuring a weeklong recuperation on the Chesapeake Bay\, the family confronts the excruciating moral dilemmas triggered by the crash. Noah tries to hold the family together as a seemingly routine police investigation jeopardizes Charlie’s future. Alice and Izzy turn strangely furtive. And Lorelei’s odd behavior tugs at Noah’s suspicions that there is a darker truth behind the incident–suspicions heightened by the sudden intrusion of Daniel Monet\, a tech mogul whose mysterious history with Lorelei hints at betrayal. When Charlie falls for Monet’s teenaged daughter\, the stakes are raised even higher in this propulsive family drama that is also a fascinating exploration of the moral responsibility and ethical consequences of AI. \nCulpability explores a world newly shaped by chatbots\, autonomous cars\, drones\, and other nonhuman forces in ways that are thrilling\, challenging\, and unimaginably provocative.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Dennis McNally\, discusses & signs The Last Great Dream: How Bohemians Became Hippies and Created the Sixties
DESCRIPTION:From the New York Times bestselling author of A Long Strange Trip and the publicist of the Grateful Dead\, a riveting social history of everything that led up to the 1960s counterculture movement. \nFew cities represent the countercultural movement of the 1960s more than San Francisco. By that decade\, the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood was home to self-branded “freaks” (dubbed “hippies” by the media) who created the world’s first psychedelic neighborhood–an alchemical chamber for social transformation. They rejected a large part of the traditional American identity\, passing over American exceptionalism\, consumerism\, misogyny\, and militarism in favor of creativity\, mind-body connection\, peace\, and love of all things. \nThe Last Great Dream is a history of everything that led to the 1960s counterculture\, when long-simmering resistance to American mainstream values birthed the hippie. It begins with the San Francisco Poetry Renaissance\, peaks with the Human Be-in in Golden Gate Park\, and ends with the Monterey Pop Festival that introduced Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin to the world. It tells of several micro-histories\, including beat poetry\, visual arts\, underground publishing\, electronic/contemporary compositional music\, experimental theater\, psychedelics\, and more. \nFascinating and definitive\, The Last Great Dream is the ultimate guide to a generation-defining countercultural movement–an Underground 101 course for newcomers and aficionados alike.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: D.J. Waldie discusses & signs Elements of Los Angeles: Earth\, Water\, Air\, and Fire
DESCRIPTION:In Elements of Los Angeles: Earth\, Water\, Fire\, Air\, acclaimed essayist D.J. Waldie continues his singular meditation on Los Angeles: a place of contradictions\, dreams\, and disquiet. With uncommon clarity and emotional depth\, Waldie considers Los Angeles as a place of both promise and disillusionment\, of civic memory and strategic forgetting\, of natural beauty and environmental fragility. Each of the four classical elements forms the basis for a profound and poetic reassessment of the city’s image\, exploring topics as diverse and resonant as the unlikely history of the Hass avocado\, the St. Francis Dam disaster\, an endurance contest that saw a young woman buried alive\, and the sound of Vin Scully’s voice carried across the summer air.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Chip Jacobs discusses & signs Later Days
DESCRIPTION:In an evocative follow-up to his Los Angeles-Times bestselling Arroyo\, Chip Jacobs returns with a gripping tale of brotherhood\, recklessness\, and last-ditch redemption against the backdrop of a Southern California prep school in gender upheaval. \nAs the elite\, all-boys institution transitions to coed\, transforming the place from suburban Lord of the Flies to soap-operatic play\, two unlikely friends–Luke Burnett and Denny Drummond–alternate rescuing the other from self-destruction and home lives gutted by loss and distracted parents. Eager to maximize their era as God-like Seniors at Stone Canyon Prep\, the pair and their classmates act invincible. They commandeer Bob’s Big Boy and wander the secret world beneath Caltech\, meeting a charismatic Nobel Prize physicist in the process. They sweat destiny-making S.A.T.s\, grapple with fallout when two boys fall for the same girl\, and watch in horror as a playoff basketball game is upended by the chemistry lab. Just when our heroes barely graduate\, en route to prized universities\, their bond is severed by a wild gunshot that will haunt them for decades. \nTwenty years later\, Luke is a hard-charging journalist with an imploding career\, while Denny is a visionary software engineer on the verge of a breakthrough–until a terminal diagnosis rewrites any happy ending. Their reunion forces both to confront the worst of themselves\, a luminous female classmate who predicted her own death\, and exactly how they squandered the potential Stone Canyon draped around them. As Denny’s time runs short\, Luke races to make peace with his failures in a world shorn of the magic his teachers once heralded. In a final act of reckoning\, with the famous Elizabeth Kubler-Ross in the mix\, fate offers them one last chance to heal the other by confronting mortality and pleading for goodbyes slippery before. \nLater Days is a powerful exploration of the ties that bind and break us. Perfect for readers drawn to fierce\, flawed friendships\, the currency of forgiveness\, and the raw beauty of life skimming its edge. With rich insight into the secret histories of the late-seventies Pasadena area\, and the psychological baggage of growing up in the shadows of “Great Men\,” father\, Jacobs second novel is as emotionally resonant as it is intellectually sharp.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: How to Write a Book: A Conversation with Jade Chang & Ann Friedman
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the launch of Jade Chang’s new novel\, What a Time to Be Alive\, Jade and frequent collaborator Ann Friedman discuss one of their favorite topics… How to Write a Book! Together\, Jade Chang and Ann Friedman (Big Friendship) are The Midwives of Invention (www.midwivesofinvention.com). They lead popular idea development workshops and retreats\, and on 10/8 they will talk about the unexpected overlaps between writing fiction and non-fiction\, their own writing processes\, and their current projects. \nA little more about What a Time to Be Alive: \n“What a Time to Be Alive is a sly\, sexy work of art. Jade Chang has captured the true essence of Los Angeles\, in all of its motley\, messy beauty\, with humor and heart. This is a novel that you will devour\, and share with your friends\, and soon want to devour again.” — Angela Flournoy\, author of The Wilderness and The Turner House \nA deeply moving and often hilarious novel following a woman who becomes an internet folk hero in the most unexpected way\, catapulting her into fame and influence just as she’s finally beginning to reckon with her complicated past \nLola Treasure Gold can’t figure out her life. She’s broke\, unemployed\, and back in her childhood home\, a crumbling cottage in the Hollywood Hills. Worse—unspeakably worse—one of her closest friends has just died. So nobody is more surprised than Lola when a jackpot falls in her lap: she stars in a Very Viral Video\, opening a surprising path for her to become a self-help guru. \nWith the encouragement of her other best friend\, Celi—still alive\, thank god—Lola embraces the public interest in her perceived message. But is she a scammer or a sage? Just as Lola is telling others to be their own guiding lights\, she can’t seem to find hers: she’s grieving; she’s accused of using the notoriety of her friend’s death to fuel her rise; and she’s full of questions about the fate of her mother\, who came to America pregnant\, fleeing China’s one-child policy\, got deported when Lola was eight\, and now has totally disappeared. \nDriven by an exuberant\, searching spirit\, Jade Chang’s kaleidoscopic new novel is a deep examination of the ways we commodify belief\, the power and precarity of fame\, and the delicious terror of being truly seen. What a Time to Be Alive asks if we can look honestly at the world and still love it; the answer is a brilliant\, resounding yes.

SUMMARY:Vroman Bookstore: Tom Lutz\, in conversation with John Powers\, discusses & signs 1925: A Literary Encyclopedia
DESCRIPTION:The year 1925 was arguably the peak of literature’s centrality. There were more magazines\, more journals\, more reviews\, more book news\, and more book gossip than ever before or since. Literature’s rivals for cultural attention were on the rise—film was becoming a more significant part of people’s media diet\, radio was just taking off\, television technologies were advancing—but literature was still king. Even mediocre books got dozens of reviews\, and the reviews were (most often) thoughtful and intellectually engaged. The belief that literary writing was an essential and consequential business was nearly universal. Modernist ferment continued to excite discussion while the pulp revolution in genre fiction—detective stories\, science fiction\, Westerns\, romance—was booming. These popular books\, even if sometimes condescended to\, were also given thoughtful review attention. \nThis encyclopedia was written as we approached the 100th anniversary of the annus mirabilis. In what follows\, we can see the seeds of virtually every aspect of our cultural life\, from art\, literature\, theater\, and music to physics\, philosophy\, social science\, and political discourse. The fear of environmental degradation\, the corruption in our politics\, the competing claims of utopianism and dystopia\, the bitterly divided views on science\, mass media\, art\, nature\, justice\, generations\, community\, freedom\, sexuality\, race\, immigration—all can be seen in their budding or full-blown gore and glory in 1925. We have come far and not very far at all.

But\, Pepe and his class soon discover that this harmless fib takes on a life of its own– literally– growing into a giant\, uncontrollable monster that threatens to eat the entire school.\nAs chaos ensues\, Pepe learns a valuable lesson: even the smallest fib can spiral out of control\, but the truth holds the power to set things right. The Fib is a timeless story that weaves magic and morality into a powerful message about honesty\, responsibility and the power of creativity. \n  \nPedro Iniguez is a Mexican-American Bram Stoker Award-winning speculative fiction writer from Los Angeles. The Fib is his first picture book and he is the author of Mexicans on the Moon: Speculative Poetry from a Possible Future and the comic book Catrina’s Caravan\, among several others. SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Barbara Roberts discusses & signs The Metamorphosis of Bunny Baxter
DESCRIPTION:Bunny Baxter thinks nothing could be worse than starting seventh grade at a school where she knows no one. But after her first day\, she realizes things can actually get much worse. \nIf Bunny Baxter were an insect\, she’d have so many ways to slip through seventh grade unnoticed. But she’s tall instead of tiny\, has flaming red Medusa hair instead of camouflage\, and she suffers from social anxiety\, which makes it hard to be part of a swarm. Worst of all\, she’s been redistricted to a new middle school away from her best friend who she could always hide behind when her anxiety got the best of her. \nThe first day at E.D. Britt Middle School does not go well. Bunny trips on the steps\, falls into the cutest boy in the school\, and causes a kid domino pile-up. At lunch\, she unintentionally causes an uproar in the cafeteria\, which lands her and another girl in the principal’s office.  Bunny decides there is only one option: to get expelled so she can transfer to the school her best friend attends. \nShe soon discovers that it isn’t that hard to get in trouble—don’t turn in your homework\, walk around the track instead of run in P.E.\, pretend you deliberately hit someone with a badminton birdie. What isn’t so easy for Bunny is realizing she now has a reputation as a troublemaker. And even more confusing\, when it looks like her plan to get expelled might work\, she’s no longer sure what to do. \nThe Metamorphosis of Bunny Baxter is a heartfelt coming of age story about an insect-loving girl who is learning to grow into herself—quirks and all.
