SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Bree Paulsen\, in conversation with Victoria Ying\, discusses Firelight’s Apprentice

Safi is thrilled about her new adventure—even if that means leaving behind Ada and their sickly father. And Ada is right to worry about her sister\, for there may be monsters hiding behind friendly faces…

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Sebastian Junger discusses In My Time of Dying
DESCRIPTION:A near-fatal health emergency leads to this powerful reflection on death—and what might follow—by the bestselling author of Tribe and The Perfect Storm. \nFor years as an award-winning war reporter\, Sebastian Junger traveled to many front lines and frequently put his life at risk. And yet the closest he ever came to death was the summer of 2020 while spending a quiet afternoon at the New England home he shared with his wife and two young children. Crippled by abdominal pain\, Junger was rushed to the hospital by ambulance. Once there\, he began slipping away. As blackness encroached\, he was visited by his dead father\, inviting Junger to join him. “It’s okay\,” his father said. “There’s nothing to be scared of. I’ll take care of you.” That was the last thing Junger remembered until he came to the next day when he was told he had suffered a ruptured aneurysm that he should not have survived. \nThis experience spurred Junger—a confirmed atheist raised by his physicist father to respect the empirical—to undertake a scientific\, philosophical\, and deeply personal examination of mortality and what happens after we die. How do we begin to process the brutal fact that any of us might perish unexpectedly on what begins as an ordinary day? How do we grapple with phenomena that science may be unable to explain? And what happens to a person\, emotionally and spiritually\, when forced to reckon with such existential questions? \nSebastian Junger is the New York Times bestselling author of Tribe\, War\, Freedom\, A Death in Belmont\, Fire\, and The Perfect Storm\, and co-director of the documentary film Restrepo\, which was nominated for an Academy Award. He is also the winner of a Peabody Award and the National Magazine Award for Reporting.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Juhea Kim\, in conversation with Katya Apekina\, discusses City of Night Birds
DESCRIPTION:A once-famous ballerina faces a final choice—to return to the world of Russian dance that nearly broke her\, or to walk away forever—in this incandescent novel of redemption and love \nOn a White Night in 2019\, prima ballerina Natalia Leonova returns to St. Petersburg two years after a devastating accident that stalled her career. Once the most celebrated dancer of her generation\, she now turns to pills and alcohol to numb the pain of her past. \nShe is unmoored in her old city as the ghosts of her former life begin to resurface: her loving but difficult mother\, her absentee father\, and the two gifted dancers who led to her downfall. \nOne of those dancers\, Alexander\, is the love of her life\, who transformed both Natalia and her art. The other is Dmitri\, a dark and treacherous genius. When the latter offers her a chance to return to the stage in her signature role\, Natalia must decide whether she can again face the people responsible for both her soaring highs and darkest hours. \nPainting a vivid portrait of the Russian ballet world\, where cutthroat ambition\, ever-shifting politics\, and sublime artistry collide\, City of Night Birds unveils the making of a dancer with both profound intimacy and breathtaking scope. Mysterious and alluring\, passionate and virtuosic\, Juhea Kim’s second novel is an affecting meditation on love\, forgiveness\, and the making of an artist in a turbulent world. \nAbout the Korean Cultural Center of Los Angeles \nLocated at 5505 Wilshire Blvd.\, in the Miracle Mile District\, the Korean Cultural Center is the axis of Korean heritage in Los Angeles. The Korean Cultural Center welcomes the general public to experience the rich traditions and history of Korea through specialized programs\, sponsored events\, and multiple learning resources. \nOperated by the Korean government’s Ministry of Culture\, Sports and Tourism\, the Korean Cultural Center is dedicated to providing insights into the rich cultural heritage of Korea. We encourage everyone to visit and learn something new about a nation with a history spanning more than 5\,000 years.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Yxta Maya Murray discusses A History of Hazardous Objects
DESCRIPTION:Laura de León is a radar astronomer who studies Potentially Hazardous Objects (PHOs) such as threatening asteroids and comets at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena\, California. In Los Angeles in 2020\, several crises are coalescing. The first strain of SARS-CoV-2 triggers the lockdowns\, the city roils with protests of Derek Chauvin’s murder of George Floyd and the police killing of Breonna Taylor\, while the Bobcat Fire sweeps across the San Fernando Valley. In the midst of these emergencies\, Laura is struggling to keep her family alive. \nSimultaneously\, Laura is trying to write the history section of a Congressional report titled the National Near-Earth Object Preparedness Strategy and Action Plan. This report will advise Congress that it must develop a system to detect and deflect PHOs\, and the section Laura is working on cites several historical meteorite impacts as proof that the Earth is now undefended against a significant impact event. \nA story about family\, love\, risk\, and science\, A History of Hazardous Objects contemplates how experiencing trauma and pain may help us secure a safer and more just world.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Martha Blanding\, in conversation with Tim O’Day\, discusses Groundbreaking Magic: A Black Woman’s Journey Through The Happiest Place on Earth
DESCRIPTION:An empowering and moving story of a young woman from South Central Los Angeles (Watts and Compton) who took a chance\, defied the odds and became the first-ever Black American to achieve a half-century-long career with The Walt Disney Company. \nDisneyland was groundbreaking when it opened in 1955 and continues to possess a legacy of being a trendsetter in both the world of themed\, immersive\, entertainment and workplace culture\, experiences\, and training. Although change was inevitable it didn’t always come easy. \nHere is the incredible story of a young woman from South Central Los Angeles (Watts and Compton) who took a chance\, defied the odds\, and became the first-ever Black American to achieve a half-century-long career with The Walt Disney Company. \nWhen Martha Blanding started working at Disneyland Park in 1971\, it was already a wildly successful and internationally beloved travel destination that had welcomed more than 100 million guests. This book is a personal journey through fifty years of Disneyland as told like never before . . . through the eyes and perspective of a successful Black woman who was indeed an example of Groundbreaking Magic. \nThis book tells how a twenty-year-old college student came to work in Walt Disney’s original theme park during the racially charged era of the early 1970s\, starting as the park’s first Black tour guide and eventually overseeing multi-million dollar generating merchandise-based events\, many featuring globally acclaimed artists and celebrities. Martha also had a unique vantage point as she saw how societal changes impacted and changed Disneyland while she helped make much of that change possible. \nIn addition to all the Disney pixie dust\, an incredibly loving\, resilient\, and close American family is at the heart of this book. With her bedrock parents who had joined the Great Migration out of the Deep South\, her family witnessed firsthand some of our country’s most shameful events while never faltering in their faith or pride in being Black Americans. \nPart memoir and part cultural history\, Groundbreaking Magic is sweet\, insightful\, sometimes blunt\, occasionally heartbreaking\, and often funny and surprising\, providing the first-ever account of Disney history as seen through the eyes of “Martha B.”

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Richard Walter discusses Deadpan
DESCRIPTION:Deadpan follows the misadventures of a vaguely antisemitic West Virginia Buick dealer who wakes up one day transformed into the world’s most popular Jewish comedian. Steeped in magical realism\, the narrative confronts the pivotal issues of our day: identity\, intolerance\, tribalism\, and the redemptive force of humor. \nThe story is set during the worldwide oil crises of the 1970s\, alternating among locations in West Virginia\, Las Vegas\, Washington\, Tehran\, and Sinai\, and featuring characters as diverse as Sarah Palin\, Mel Brooks\, and the Shah of Iran. This phantasmagorical tour-de-force not only constitutes a satirical takedown of antisemitism (and bigotry in general)\, it is also a dazzling display of human dignity\, resilience\, and humor.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Vroman’s and PJ Library present Latkes\, Latkes\, Good to Eat: A Chanukah Story by Naomi Howland
DESCRIPTION:Vroman’s  is celebrating Hanukkah by partnering with PJ Library to present a very special Storytime featuring Latkes\, Latkes\, Good to Eat: A Chanukah Story by Naomi Howland. \nSadie and her four little brothers are very poor and always hungry. On the first night of Chanukah\, Sadie performs a generous act\, and in turn receives a frying pan that cooks up sizzling hot\, golden latkes on command. Sadie tells her brothers never to use the magic pan\, but when she goes out one afternoon\, the mischievous boys can’t resist. They remember the words to start the pan cooking . . . but what were the words to make it stop? This humorous tale of generosity and greed is accompanied by bright\, cheerful illustrations depicting a traditional Russian village. An author’s note and a recipe for Sadie’s latkes are included. \nPJ Library sends free high-quality Jewish children’s books to families every month. These stories spark conversations that inspire the whole family to explore and celebrate what they love about Jewish life. \nThe program was created by the nonprofit Harold Grinspoon Foundation (HGF) in keeping with its mission to help people connect to Jewish values\, traditions\, and culture while building vibrant Jewish communities. The HGF partners with local Jewish organizations to fund PJ Library and make it available in their community.
