SUMMARY:Vroman's: Dan Frey discusses Dreambound
DESCRIPTION:When Byron Kidd’s twelve-year-old daughter vanishes\, the only clue is a note claiming that she’s taken off to explore the Hidden World\, a magical land from a series of popular novels. She is not the only child to seek out this imaginary realm in recent years\, and Byron–a cynical and hard-nosed reporter–is determined to discover the whereabouts of dozens of missing kids. \nByron secures a high-profile interview with Annabelle Tobin\, the eccentric author of the books\, and heads off to her palatial home in the Hollywood Hills. But the truth Byron discovers is more fantastic than he ever could have dreamed. \nAs he unearths locations from the books that seem to be bleeding into the real world\, he must shed his doubts and dive headfirst into the mystical secrets of Los Angeles if he hopes to reunite with his child. Soon Byron finds himself on his own epic journey–but if he’s not careful\, he could be the next one to disappear. \nTold through journal entries\, transcripts\, emails\, and excerpts from Tobin’s novels\, Dreambound is a spellbinding homage to Los Angeles and an immersive and fast-paced story of how far a father will go–even delving into impossible worlds–to save his daughter.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Local Author Day featuring Sally Stevens\, Michael D. Meloan\, and Emma Gazley
DESCRIPTION:Sally Stevens presents I Sang That: A Memoir from Hollywood \nIt’s a personal journey behind the scenes with this singer/lyricist/choral director into the world of music makers who created the film scores\, television music\, sound recordings\, commercials\, and concert evenings over the last sixty years. She has worked with some of the best composers and artists and shares her fascinating journey. \nMichael D. Meloan presents Pinball Wizard \n“Are you the Pinball Wizard or the pinball?” asks Ralph’s manager inside a nuclear-hardened bunker in England. That is the question driving Michael D. Meloan’s new novella–a story of love\, sex\, jets\, and Bukowski. \nLights flash and bells ring as Ralph is buffeted between a controlling father\, international intrigue in the US defense industry\, and a friendship with the writer Charles Bukowski. A wild girlfriend also ratchets up the action. \nBut in the end\, it is Ralph’s turn at the controls. \n  \nEmma Gazley presents For Those Who Cannot Live or Die \nWhat does it mean to live? To die? A young woman wrestles with her ancestors\, her daemons\, and her faith after plunging into the mysteries of illness and memory. This collection of poetry will leave you in awe\, with inspiration\, and daring to ask deeper questions surrounding your own experiences and existence.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Jana Monroe\, in conversation with Dawn Haghighi discuss Heart of Darkness
DESCRIPTION:Jana Monroe was no ordinary cop. One of the first analysts–and\, at the time\, the only female agent–in the world-renowned FBI Behavioral Sciences Unit at Quantico\, she consulted on more than 850 homicide cases\, including infamous serial killers Ted Bundy\, Jeffrey Dahmer\, Edmund Kemper\, and Aileen Wuornos. Monroe was also the model for Clarice Starling in the movie version of The Silence of the Lambs; she even helped train Jodie Foster for her Oscar-winning role. Monroe’s later years found her dealing with the aftermath of Columbine\, heading up the FBI’s post-9/11 investigation in Las Vegas\, and much more. \nIn Hearts of Darkness\, Monroe steps out from the shadows to tell the story of her astonishing life in shaping law enforcement and intelligence analysis. Monroe explores the cases that have stayed with her\, breaking down victimology\, offering new insight into the minds of serial killers\, and discussing the psychological toll of the job and the obstacles she faced as a woman in the male-dominated Bureau. This is a gripping\, sometimes gruesome\, and always remarkable memoir of an unparalleled life and career spent chasing the monsters among us. (Abrams Press) \nDawn Haghighi is an independent board director for Elevate Services and general counsel for Murcor Real Estate\, law and business school lecturer\, global business\, trade association\, and not-for-profit leader. She previously held senior legal roles at Princess Cruises\, RBS/Citizens\, and Nordstrom. Ms. Haghighi recently presented her first TED Talk:  Say Hello to Your Better Self: Going from The Ordinary to the Extraordinary. She is a member of the FBI Los Angeles Citizens Academy 2023. In June 2023\, she was selected as an Inaugural Member Of The 50/50 Women To Watch In North America For Public Company Board Service.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Reggie Watts discussing Great Falls\, MT
DESCRIPTION:Comedian and musician Reggie Watts shares his story of growing up in Montana as a biracial oddball struggling to navigate life\, girls\, drugs\, and his own identity in America’s heartland–and having a blast doing it. \nReggie Watts is weird. But you knew that. Anyone who’s seen his multifaceted\, entirely improvised comedy and music shows knows that. Reggie Watts is also from the town of Great Falls\, MT. \nThese two facts are not unrelated. \nWatts grew up in Montana in the ’80s\, half French\, half American\, half white\, half Black\, speaking a bunch of different languages and slipping between the orchestra geeks and the football jocks until he finally found a squad of fellow misfits with an affinity for trouble. It was a wide-open time and place that invited freedom and exploration–as well as car theft and the not infrequent use of recreational cough syrup. And it helped him become the uniquely strange creative voice he is today. \nIn Great Falls\, MT\, Watts takes us through his story\, hitting on the culture shock he experienced after moving from Europe to the heart of America\, where he was called racial slurs by neighbors but wasn’t Black enough for his father’s extended family. Where he fought with his authoritarian dad\, built a new family of antiestablishment\, post-punk oddballs–and ultimately knew he had to leave. But after Watts’s career exploded in Seattle and New York\, ultimately scoring him a nightly place next to James Corden on The Late Late Show\, he found himself drawn back to his hometown after the deaths of his parents. This is his love letter to the town that made him. But like love itself\, it’s messy and complicated and dirty and beautiful–and as weird and wonderful as Watts himself. (Tiny Reparations Books) \nTickets include one seat/entry and one signed copy of Great Falls\, MT which will be handed out at check-in. Books will be pre-signed so a book signing will NOT follow the conversation.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Sarah James\, in conversation with Kemper Donovan\, discusses Last Night at the Hollywood Canteen
DESCRIPTION:Perhaps the best place in 1943 Hollywood to see the stars is the Hollywood Canteen\, a club for servicemen staffed exclusively by those in show business. Murder mystery playwright Annie Laurence\, new in town after a devastating breakup\, definitely hopes to rub elbows with the right stars. Maybe then she can get her movie made. \nBut Hollywood proves to be more than tinsel and glamour. When despised film critic Fiona Farris is found dead in the Canteen kitchen\, Annie realizes any one of the Canteen’s luminous volunteers could be guilty of the crime. To catch the killer\, Annie falls in with Fiona’s friends\, a bitter and cynical group–each as uniquely unhappy in their life and career as Annie is in hers–that call themselves the Ambassador’s Club. \nSolving a murder in real life\, it turns out\, is a lot harder than writing one for the stage. And by involving herself in the secrets and lies of the Ambassador’s Club\, Annie just might have put a target on her own back.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Special Storytime featuring Sasha Mayer presents Squash\, the Cat
DESCRIPTION:Squash\, who looks a lot like the vegetable\, is an early-breakfast\, lots-of-naps kind of cat. Maggie is a wake-up-late\, wild-playdate kind of girl. Despite their differences\, they are the best of friends. That is until one day Squash confuses Maggie’s new toy for a dangerous beast and makes a terrible mistake. An unbelievably BIG MISTAKE. Now Squash is a can’t-face-Maggie kind of cat\, and Maggie is a wishes-she-had-her-toy kind of girl. But the thing about best friends is\, one way or another\, they always a way back to each other.\nIn this story of accountability and forgiveness\, these cute characters help kids learn the important lesson of owning up to your actions and being able to accept an apology. Best friends fight and teaching young readers how to deal with it when it happens\, is an invaluable social emotional learning skill. Squash and Maggie show kids how easy it can be.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Shibani Mahtani & Timothy McLaughlin\, in conversation with Ben Rhodes\, discuss Among the Braves
DESCRIPTION:Hong Kong was an experiment in governance. Handed back to China in 1997 after 156 years of British rule\, it was meant to be a carve-out between hostile systems: a bridge between communism and capitalism\, authoritarianism and liberal democracy. “One country\, two systems” kept its media free\, its courts independent and its protests boisterous\, designed also to convince Taiwan of a peaceful solution to Beijing’s desire for reunification. \nYet this formulation excluded Hong Kong’s own people\, their future negotiated by political titans in faraway capitals. In 2019\, an ill-conceived law spear-headed by a sycophantic leader pushed millions to take to the streets in one of the most enduring protest movements the world has ever seen. Xi Jinping responded with a draconian national security law that sought not only to end the demonstrations but quash the “problem” of Hong Kongers’ identity and desire for freedom. \nReverend Chu\, who believed Hong Kong had to carry the spirit of students at Tiananmen Square\, saw his silver-haired comrades who birthed the city’s modern pro-democracy movement handcuffed and taken from their homes. Tommy\, an art student radicalized into throwing Molotov cocktails\, watched “braves” like him brutalized by police before his own arrest prompted him to flee. Finn epitomized the decentralized nature of the movement and its internet-fueled victories\, but online anonymity couldn’t stop his life from unravelling. Gwyneth could predict her eventual fate when she chose to give up her career as a journalist to stand for election as an opposition candidate\, and did it anyway. \nIn Among the Braves\, Shibani Mahtani and Timothy McLaughlin tell the story of Hong Kong’s past\, and what the sacrifices of its people mean for global democracy’s shaky foundation.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Storytime featuring Jennifer Gray Olson presents Party Pooper
DESCRIPTION:Every party has a pooper. You may not have wanted one. You certainly did not invite one. But\, inevitably\, every party will have one. So what should you do? \nMaybe you can interest the pooper in a game? Hopefully the pooper doesn’t lay down in defeat in the middle of your Twister mat… oh\, there he goes. Directly on the blue dot you needed. \nPerhaps you can entice the pooper with a delicious\, scrumptious cake? Unless the pooper sticks his booger-y fingers directly into the layer you were most excited to eat… sigh. \nOh\, I know what to do! Let’s. Party. HARDER. \nUntil… things get taken too far. Then it might be time to take a step back and do the hardest thing of all: apologize. \nIn Party Pooper\, Jennifer Gray Olson tackles complex SEL themes with expertise\, grace\, and laugh-out-loud humor. It’s a thoughtful\, yet entertaining examination that has equal empathy for the party goers and\, of course\, the party pooper.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Alice Simpson\, in conversation with Kathryn Kay\, discusses The Winthrop Agreement
DESCRIPTION:When Rivkah Milmanovitch arrives at Ellis Island\, her husband is not waiting for her as promised. Alone and pregnant\, she makes her way to the Lower East Side tenement of an old friend. Lottie Aarons\, whose husband went out for a newspaper and never returned\, takes Rivkah in and they work side-by-side in dispiriting sweatshops. Rivkah gives birth to a daughter\, Mimi\, determined that her child will have a better life in America. \nFrederick Winthrop\, slum landlord\, lives in one of Fifth Avenue’s sumptuous mansions–and preys on young girls. When he serendipitously meets fifteen-year-old Mimi\, who dreams of silks\, satins and velvets\, imagines costumes and ball gowns\, she is easily seduced\, and her life takes an unexpected turn. To avoid scandal\, the Winthrop family offers Mimi a rare opportunity. While Lottie\, now a bookkeeper in the employ of the Winthrops\, wisely advises her\, Mimi knows exactly what she wants. But as she rises to international fame\, she must struggle with the secrets of her past and protect those she loves. \nPart history\, part romance\, with a twist of gothic\, The Winthrop Agreement is a spellbinding tale of a determined heroine who will entrance Bridgerton and all historical fiction fans.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Illeana Douglas discusses Connecticut in the Movies: From Dream Houses to Dark Suburbia
DESCRIPTION:Illeana Douglas has long been known for shining new light on forgotten films. Now the celebrated actress and film historian turns her focus to a heretofore unrecognized brand: the Connecticut movie. Told from the passionate perspective of an author who grew up here\, Illeana takes the reader on a cinematic road trip through Hollywood history and Connecticut geography\, bringing the breezy\, intimate\, knowledgeable writing style acclaimed by reviewers of her first book\, I Blame Dennis Hopper (2015). Illeana defines how the perception of on-screen Connecticut\, originally created in Hollywood\, has shifted more than that of any other New England state over the decades. Films from Hollywood’s Golden Age\, such as Theodora Goes Wild\, Bringing Up Baby\, and Christmas in Connecticut\, presented Connecticut as an antidote to the metropolis–a place where you could find your true self. The slogan “Come to Peaceful Connecticut” not only led to Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House\, but to an exodus of urban moviegoers seeking their dream houses. Gentleman’s Agreement\, which highlighted social inequity\, challenged Connecticut’s well-cultivated image\, as did the dark suburban malaise of The Swimmer and The Ice Storm. From Sherlock Holmes to Mystic Pizza to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull\, from horror in The Stepford Wives to historical in Amistad\, the Constitution State has been at the heart of nearly two hundred feature films featuring a variety of genres. Illeana’s insights provide some surprising conclusions about just what it means to be a “Connecticut movie.” Filled with behind-the-scenes stories as well as her own personal snapshots of the places where these films were made\, Connecticut in the Movies is not only a keepsake for denizens of the state\, but a valuable resource for film buffs everywhere.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Special Storytime featuring Sonoko Sakai presents Mai and the Missing Melon
DESCRIPTION:This charming story invites the reader on a journey through rural 1960s Japan following a little girl named Mai on the Enoden train\, past the oceanside populated with fishers\, and to the classic shrine-like home of her grandmother\, or obachama. \nLoosely based on an event in Sonoko’s childhood\, Mai wishes to share the gift of a sweet muskmelon with her grandmother but loses it on the train along the way. Obachama shares the Japanese folktale of The Stone Buddhas as an example of the power of good intentions to cheer Mai up. \nAfter the story\, Mai hears from the train station master that the melon has been found\, and she and her obachama are able to enjoy the sweet muskmelon together.\nThis sweet story explores the cherished relationship between a young girl and her grandmother-two great friends despite the age gap-while the expressive art takes the reader through the Japanese countryside\, past the sea\, bamboo forests\, and temples\, drawn from the author’s own childhood memories.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Liên Shutt\, in conversation with Lon Kurashige\, discusses Home is Here
DESCRIPTION:Home is Here builds on foundational Buddhist teachings–the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path–offering an intersectional frame to help you embody antiracist practices and tend to your own healing under racism and oppression. \nGrounded in practice\, memoir\, and mindful self-help skill-building\, Rev. Liên Shutt’s Engaged Four Noble Truths illuminate a path toward healing and liberation. She shares her own experiences with anti-Asian hate–as a teen riding her bike\, meditating in whitewashed monasteries–and asks\, what does it mean to attend to our suffering in body\, heart\, and mind when racism can cause such intense hurt and pain? What does it look like to heal? \nWhile written mainly for Asian American Buddhists and other BIPOC practitioners\, Home is Here moves us all from knowing and contemplation to a place of action and wholeness. \nIn the doing is the realization\, and in practicing antiracism\, we build a home for all beings. This is reflected in Rev. Shutt’s choice to frame each step of the Engaged Eightfold Path not as “right” but as “skillful”–to convey both the knowing and the practices essential to healing harm.\nAn engaged reframing of core Buddhist spiritual principles\, Home is Here connects foundational practices to urgent causes–and invites readers on a path home to wholeness.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Brooke Wentz\, in conversation with Anthony Davis\, discusses Transfigured New York: Interviews with Experimental Artists and Musicians\, 1980-1990
DESCRIPTION:Transfigured New York presents conversations with iconic\, genre-bending artists who shaped the sounds of experimental movements like no-wave\, avant-jazz\, and electronic music. As an undergrad in the 1980s\, Brooke Wentz hosted the show Transfigured Night on Columbia University’s WKCR-FM\, discussing art and ideas with avant-garde music luminaries. She unearths these candid interviews before only first broadcast from cassettes and reel-to-reel tapes\, letting readers today feel the excitement and creative energy of the 1980s New York underground scene. Musicians and artists\, now icons of their craft\, tell their stories and share their thoughts about the creative process\, capturing the ambition and energy that animated their work. Legends in the making like Bill Frisell\, Philip Glass\, and Laurie Anderson convey what it was like to be a struggling artist in 1980s New York when the city was alive with possibilities. Others who were well known at the time\, including John Cage\, La Monte Young\, and Ravi Shankar\, advocated for their distinctive ideas about art and opened up about their creative lives. Featuring an astonishing range of interviews with Subotnick\, Joan Tower\, Steve Reich\, Glenn Branca\, Joan La Barbara\, Living Colour\, Arthur Russell\, John Lurie\, Eric Bogosian\, Bill T. Jones\, and many more Transfigured New York provides new insight into the city’s cultural landscape in this era. It is a one-of-a-kind account of one of the most exhilarating and inventive periods for art and culture in New York City’s history.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Ron White Discusses 'On Great Fields'
DESCRIPTION:Before 1862\, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain had rarely left his home state of Maine\, where he was a trained minister and mild-mannered professor at Bowdoin College. His colleagues were shocked when he volunteered for the Union army\, but he was undeterred and later became known as one of the North’s greatest heroes: On the second day at Gettysburg\, after running out of ammunition at Little Round Top\, he ordered his men to wield their bayonets in a desperate charge down a rocky slope that routed the Confederate attackers. Despite being wounded at Petersburg–and told by two surgeons he would die–Chamberlain survived the war\, going on to be elected governor of Maine four times and serve as president of Bowdoin College. \nHow did a stuttering young boy come to be fluent in nine languages and even teach speech and rhetoric? How did a trained minister find his way to the battlefield? Award-winning historian Ronald C. White delves into these contradictions in this cradle-to-grave biography of General Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain\, from his upbringing in rural Maine to his tenacious\, empathetic military leadership and his influential postwar public service\, exploring a question that still plagues so many veterans: How do you make a civilian life of meaning after having experienced the extreme highs and lows of war? \nChamberlain is familiar to millions from Michael Shaara’s now-classic novel of the Civil War\, The Killer Angels\, and Ken Burns’s timeless miniseries The Civil War\, but in this book \, White captures the complex and inspiring man behind the hero . Heavily illustrated and featuring nine detailed maps\, this gripping\, impeccably researched portrait illuminates one of the most admired but least known figures in our nation’s bloodiest conflict.
