SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Lian Dolan discusses The Marriage Sabbatical
DESCRIPTION:After twenty-three years of building careers and raising kids together\, Jason and Nicole Elswick are ready for a break from their daily lives. Jason has spent years planning his dream sabbatical–ditching work for a nine-month-long motorcycle trip through South America. The problem is\, that’s Jason’s dream\, not Nicole’s. After years of working retail and parenting in Portland\, Nicole craves the sun of the Southwest and the artistic community in Santa Fe\, where she wants to learn jewelry design. \nA chance encounter at a dinner party presents a surprising–and intriguing–way out of their dilemma. Over a little too much wine\, Jason and Nicole’s married neighbors sing the praises of the 500 Mile Rule: their policy of enjoying themselves however they wish–and with whomever they wish–when they’re temporarily far apart. It seems like the perfect solution: nine months pursuing their own adventures–with a bit of don’t-ask-don’t-tell–and then a return to their shared lives. It’ll be a sabbatical from their marriage as well as their day jobs. \nAs Jason bikes his way across a continent and Nicole reclaims the art she’s long neglected\, they discover the pleasures and pitfalls of the 500 Mile Rule\, confronting temptations of all kinds\, uncomfortable truths about themselves\, and gaining new perspectives on their partnership.\nBut all sabbaticals come to an end…then what?

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: A Group Poetry event featuring Senator Anthony Portantino\, Linda Ravenswood\, and Brian Sonia Wallace
DESCRIPTION:Political instability\, poverty\, climate change\, and the insatiable appetite for cheap labor all fuel clandestine movement across borders. As those borders harden\, the demand for smugglers who aid migrants across them increases every year. Yet the real lives and work of smugglers–or coyotes\, or guides\, as they are often known by the migrants who hire their services–are only ever reported on from a distance\, using tired tropes and stereotypes\, often depicted as boogie men and violent warlords. In an effort to better understand this essential yet extralegal billion dollar global industry\, internationally recognized anthropologist and expert Jason De León embedded with a group of smugglers moving migrants across Mexico over the course of seven years. \nThe result of this unique and extraordinary access is SOLDIERS AND KINGS: the first ever in-depth\, character-driven look at human smuggling. It is a heart-wrenching and intimate narrative that revolves around the life and death of one coyote who falls in love and tries to leave smuggling behind. In a powerful\, original voice\, De León expertly chronicles the lives of low-level foot soldiers breaking into the smuggling game\, and morally conflicted gang leaders who oversee rag-tag crews of guides and informants along the migrant trail. SOLDIERS AND KINGS is not only a ground-breaking up-close glimpse of a difficult-to-access world\, it is a masterpiece of narrative nonfiction.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Yulin Kuang\, in conversation with Candice Lim\, discusses How to End a Love Story
DESCRIPTION:Helen Zhang hasn’t seen Grant Shepard once in the thirteen years since the tragic accident that bound their lives together forever. \nNow a bestselling author\, Helen pours everything into her career. She’s even scored a coveted spot in the writers’ room of the TV adaptation of her popular young adult novels\, and if she can hide her imposter syndrome and overcome her writer’s block\, surely the rest of her life will fall into place too. LA is the fresh start she needs. After all\, no one knows her there. Except… \nGrant has done everything in his power to move on from the past\, including building a life across the country. And while the panic attacks have never quite gone away\, he’s well liked around town as a screenwriter. He knows he shouldn’t have taken the job on Helen’s show\, but it will open doors to developing his own projects that he just can’t pass up. \nGrant’s exactly as Helen remembers him–charming\, funny\, popular\, and lovable in ways that she’s never been. And Helen’s exactly as Grant remembers too–brilliant\, beautiful\, closed off. But working together is messy\, and electrifying\, and Helen’s parents\, who have never forgiven Grant\, have no idea he’s in the picture at all. \nWhen secrets come to light\, they must reckon with the fact that theirs was never meant to be any kind of love story. And yet… the key to making peace with their past–and themselves–might just lie in holding on to each other in the present. (Avon Books) \nCandice Lim is the co-host of ICYMI\, Slate’s podcast about internet culture. She comes to Slate from NPR\, where she was an assistant producer and occasional panelist on Pop Culture Happy Hour. She graduated from Boston University and hails from Orange County\, California.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Matt Strassler discusses Waves in an Impossible Sea
DESCRIPTION:In Waves in an Impossible Sea\, physicist Matt Strassler tells a startling tale of elementary particles\, human experience\, and empty space. He begins with a simple mystery of motion. When we drive at highway speeds with the windows down\, the wind beats against our faces. Yet our planet hurtles through the cosmos at 150 miles per second\, and we feel nothing of it. How can our voyage be so tranquil when\, as Einstein discovered\, matter warps space\, and space deflects matter? \nThe answer\, Strassler reveals\, is that empty space is a sea\, albeit a paradoxically strange one. Much like water and air\, it ripples in various ways\, and we ourselves\, made from its ripples\, can move through space as effortlessly as waves crossing an ocean. Deftly weaving together daily experience and fundamental physics–the musical universe\, the enigmatic quantum\, cosmic fields\, and the Higgs boson–Strassler shows us how all things\, familiar and unfamiliar\, emerge from what seems like nothing at all.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Darcie Little Badger discusses Sheine Lende
DESCRIPTION:Shane works with her mother and their ghost dogs\, tracking down missing persons even when their families can’t afford to pay. Their own family was displaced from their traditional home years ago following a devastating flood – and the loss of Shane’s father and her grandparents. They don’t think they’ll ever get their home back. \nThen Shane’s mother and a local boy go missing\, after a strange interaction with a fairy ring. Shane\, her brother\, her friends\, and her lone\, surviving grandparent – who isn’t to be trusted – set off on the road to find them. But they may not be anywhere in this world – or this place in time. \nNevertheless\, Shane is going to find them. \nDarcie Little Badger’s Elatsoe launched her career and in the years since has become a beloved favorite. This prequel to Elatsoe\, centered on Ellie’s grandmother\, deepens and expands Darcie’s one-of-a-kind world and introduces us to another cast of characters that will wend their way around readers’ hearts.

DESCRIPTION:When her new husband joins an elite Army unit\, Simone Gorrindo is uprooted from New York City and dropped into Columbus\, Georgia–a town so foreign she might as well have landed on the moon. A love story\, an unforgettable coming-of-age tale\, and a bracing tour of the intractable divisions that plague our country today\, The Wives offers a rare and powerful gift: a hopeful stitch in the fabric of a torn America.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Trish Lundy discusses The One That Got Away with Murder
DESCRIPTION:kRobbie and Trevor Cresmont have a body count–the killer kind. Handsome and privileged\, the Crestmont brothers have enough wealth to ensure they’ll never be found guilty of any wrongdoing\, even if all of Happy Valley believes they’re behind the deaths of their ex-girlfriends. First there was soccer star Victoria Moreno\, Robbie’s ex\, who mysteriously drowned at the family lake house. Then\, a year later\, Trevor’s girlfriend died of a suspicious overdose. \nBut the Crestmonts aren’t the only ones with secrets. Lauren O’Brian might be the new girl at school\, but she’s never been a good girl. With a dark past of her own\, she’s desperate for a fresh start. Except when she starts a no-strings-attached relationship with Robbie\, her chance is put in jeopardy. During what’s meant to be their last weekend together\, Lauren stumbles across shocking evidence that just might implicate Robbie. \nWith danger closing in\, Lauren doesn’t know who to trust. And after a third death rocks the town\, she must decide whether to end things with Robbie or risk becoming another cautionary tale. (Henry Holt & Company) \nAlexa Donne is the author of Brightly Burning and The Stars We Steal\, sci-fi romance retellings of classics set in space\, and the YA thriller The Ivies\, which Kirkus Reviews called “a thrilling boarding school story with a satirical edge.” A graduate of Boston University\, Alexa works in TV marketing and has done pro bono college admissions mentoring since 2014. A true INFJ\, in her “free” time she mentors with WriteGirl\, organizes the Author Mentor Match program\, and runs one of the most popular writing advice channels on YouTube. She lives in Los Angeles with two fluffy ginger cats named after characters from YA literature. You can find her online at alexadonne.com.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Mae Ngai discusses Corky Lee’s Asian America: Fifty Years of Photographic Justice
DESCRIPTION:Known throughout his lifetime as the “undisputed\, unofficial Asian American photographer laureate\,” the late photojournalist Corky Lee documented Asian American and Pacific Islander communities for fifty years\, breaking the stereotype of Asian Americans as docile\, passive\, and\, above all\, foreign to this country. Corky Lee’s Asian America is a stunning retrospective of his life’s work–a selection of the best photographs from his vast collection\, from his start in New York’s Chinatown in the 1970s to his coverage of diverse Asian American communities across the country until his untimely passing in 2021. \nCorky Lee’s Asian America traces Lee’s decades-long quest for photographic justice\, following Asian American social movements for recognition and rights alongside his artistic development as an activist social photographer. Iconic photographs feature protests against police brutality in New York in the 1970s\, a Sikh man draped in an American flag after 9/11\, and a reenactment of the completion of the transcontinental railroad of 1869 featuring descendants of Chinese railroad workers\, and his last photos of community life and struggle during the coronavirus pandemic. \nAsian American writers\, artists\, activists\, and friends of Lee reflect on his life and career and provide rich historical and cultural context to his photographs\, including a foreword from writer Hua Hsu and contributions from artist Ai Weiwei\, filmmaker Renée Tajima-Peña\, writer Helen Zia\, photographer Alan Chin\, historian Gordon Chang\, playwright David Henry Hwang\, and more. \nFeaturing never-before-seen photographs alongside his best-known images\, Corky Lee’s Asian America represents Lee’s mission to chronicle a history of inclusion\, resistance\, ethnic pride\, and patriotism. This is a remarkable documentation of vital moments in Asian American history and a timely reminder that it’s also a history that we continue to make.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Michael Ramos discusses The After: A Veteran's Notes on Coming Home
DESCRIPTION:When Michael Ramos enlisted in the Navy and was assigned to serve as a chaplain’s bodyguard thirteen days before 9/11\, he had no idea he would soon be sent to Iraq. But he embraced the posting\, combat service\, and career for a decade\, until\, at age thirty-four\, the military told him his skill set was no longer relevant. Through divorce and remarriage\, his son’s choice to enlist in the Marines\, the loss of friends to war and suicide\, and his inability to sleep or rest\, Michael struggled with the return to civilian life\, and particularly with civilian attitudes toward veterans. \nIn twenty-four concussive\, embodied\, and nonlinear essays\, Michael creates a challenging and complex portrait of what it means to be a warrior\, civilian\, veteran\, father\, husband\, and teacher–for he ultimately uses the skills he developed in the military to help others find meaning in their lives. While this may sound like a redemption story\, it is instead a brutally honest portrayal that refuses easy answers and seeks to help other war veterans realize they’re not alone as they search for their place in the world.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Kaveh Akbar discusses Martyr!
DESCRIPTION:Cyrus Shams is a young man grappling with an inheritance of violence and loss: his mother’s plane was shot down over the skies of the Persian Gulf in a senseless accident; and his father’s life in America was circumscribed by his work killing chickens at a factory farm in the Midwest. Cyrus is a drunk\, an addict\, and a poet\, whose obsession with martyrs leads him to examine the mysteries of his past–toward an uncle who rode through Iranian battlefields dressed as the angel of death to inspire and comfort the dying\, and toward his mother\, through a painting discovered in a Brooklyn art gallery that suggests she may not have been who or what she seemed. \nKaveh Akbar’s Martyr! is a paean to how we spend our lives seeking meaning–in faith\, art\, ourselves\, others. (Knopf Publishing Group) \n“Kaveh Akbar is one of my favorite writers. Ever.” –Tommy Orange\, Pulitzer Prize-nominated author of There There \n“The best novel you’ll ever read about the joy of language\, addiction\, displacement\, martyrdom\, belonging\, homesickness.” –Lauren Groff\, best-selling author of Matrix and Fates and Furies
