DESCRIPTION:Fans of Maria Bamford’s acclaimed quasi-autobiographical Lady Dynamite! Netflix series already know of her romance with LA painter Scott Marvel Cassidy\, as well as her droll pug sidekicks Blueberry and Bert.Now the story has been recounted in the graphic novella Hogbook and Lazer Eyes\, written by Bamford/Cassidy\, drawn by Cassidy\, and all told by the rescue dogs they’ve adopted. \nFor those unfamiliar with the story\, newly single fortysomethings Maria Bamford and Scott Cassidy each signed up on the dating site O.K. Cupid\, under the respective usernames “Hogbook” and “Lazer Eyes.” They went on a date\, and then another\, and soon\, despite a history of Bipolar II disorder and unhealthy relationships for each of them\, they fall in love and are married in 2015. We view all of this through the prism of their pug housemates\, including Blueberry and Bert (who has an unnatural obsession with Michael Flatley of “Riverdance” fame)\, and the elderly bonded pair Betty and Arnold (who recount their star turn as interplanetary canine scientists in the second season of Lady Dynamite). \nCassidy’s fine art training translates with ease into graphic storytelling\, with a naturalistic illustrative style that is a pitch-perfect match Bamford’s comic timing\, making Hogbook and Lazer Eyes a beautifully illustrated love story\, told by some incredibly charming pugs.

While you enjoy the music on your picnic blanket\, indulge in delicious taco plates and more from Anaya’s Restaurant\, or bring a picnic from your favorite local restaurant. \nFeatured Artists \nLittle Brazil – Little Brazil was born with the idea of revisiting the defining moments of Brazilian music from a contemporary perspective. Samba\, Choro\, Baião and Bossa Nova are addressed in an acoustic set with vocal\, nylon guitar\, drums and percussion led by the Brazilian musicians Natália Spadini and Marcelo Bucater. The arrangements are well crafted and modern\, all played by Brazilian musicians who live in Pasadena\, what makes the music stay true to its Brazilian identity. \n  \n  \n  \n

Latin Beat Magazine describes Elliott Caine as “one of the West Coast’s finest trumpeters.” His original compositions have been heard on programs including The Oprah Winfrey Show and Late Night with David Letterman. With the relocation of drummer Jeff Donavan\, bassist Larry Muradian has continued the legacy of straight-ahead jazz in the area. The quintet regularly performs at notable local venues\, including the Playhouse Village Summer Jazz Series\, the Pasadena Art Walk\, the Pasadena Playhouse Theater\, Boston Court\, and the Pasadena Central Library. The band features Kye Palmer on trumpet\, Chuck Manning on saxophone\, Chad Edwards on piano\, Larry Muradian on bass\, and Jack Cook on drums. \n  \n  \n

After Kira decided to form a jazz group\, Kira & The Major 3 was born! This LA-based jazz quartet has a repertoire of over 40 standards from American jazz\, Brazilian jazz\, and Afro-Cuban music. \n  \n

Join award-winning recording artist Karen Golden for a delightful session\, followed by a sensory playcraft where you can learn to make salt-dough challah. You might even pick up a little Hebrew and Yiddish! Admission is free for these activities! \nABOUT KAREN GOLDEN\nKaren Golden is a storyteller/musician\, and award-winning recording artist. She has traveled to China\, S. Korea\, Hong Kong\, Peru\, Argentina\, Uruguay\, Brazil\, and Colombia to tell stories in international schools. Her written stories have been published in eight anthology collections. Karen is also the Founder/Director of Creative Learning Place\, a homeschool learning center founded in 2009 in Los Angeles. When she is not making story\, musical\, or educational connections\, Karen can be found in her garden tending to her many flowers\, plants\, and turtles. \n

DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Children’s Book Week with Vroman’s–May 6th-12th! \nChildren’s Book Week is a national week-long event that celebrates books for young readers. 2024 is the 105th anniversary of this beloved program\, and this year’s event slogan is No Rules. Just Read. \nJoin us for a special event on Wednesday\, May 8th at 11am. We will have storytime led by Mr. Steve\, plus crafts\, coloring\, and more! We will also be doing a costume parade through the store\, so be sure to dress up as one of your favorite book characters and receive a gift from the Children’s Department! \nIf you are not able to attend on Wednesday\, stop by the Children’s Info Desk at any point during the week for coloring sheets\, art supplies\, and other freebies. We will have additional prizes for children and teens who dress as their favorite book characters!
