SUMMARY:SCCM: Connections Exhibits and Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Connections is a public project produced for the Southern California Children’s Museum by the nonprofit Drawing Together in collaboration with four artists: Karen Godfrey and Mary Duman from Wrightwood and Amy Bauer and Emily Gallagher from Los Angeles. The exhibit and workshops aim to explore our connection to each other and the planet and address social isolation. Research has found that nearby nature can help us feel connected by offering socially isolated people an alternative way of feeling connected and overcoming the effect of low social connectedness. \nJoin Southern California Children’s Museum for several workshops and an exhibit that brings nature\, imagination\, and connection for little ones together! This project is made possible by an Impact Grant from the California Arts Council\, a state granting agency. \nWorkshop: April 27th at 11:30 – Interconnected Wonders \nThe Interconnected Wonders workshop offers cooperative activities to experience a felt sense of our place in the larger web of life on Earth. Children will be invited to connect through a community connection action and imaginative play dress-up activity. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nKaren Godfrey: As a mixed media artist\, I am richly inspired and intrigued by the raw wild beauty inherent in the immense and minute wonders of Life itself. I am informed by the vast sensuality of the rhythmic seasons and cycle of Nature: The Spiral Dance of Birth\, Life\, Death\, and Rebirth. \nAmy Bauer: A lifelong maker\, Amy Bauer is an artist\, designer\, educator\, creator of Fun-A-Day-LA\, and Creative Corps Grantee 23-24. Amy explores environmental themes and ties them into an investigation of the likenesses and frictions between her urban life and her folk art aesthetic. \nEmily Gallagher: Emily Gallagher is a soprano and community-based artist living in Los Angeles. She has performed in the United States and Europe and works to unite communities through the arts through programming that is accessible and engaging for a diverse audience. \nMary Duman: Mary Duman is an experienced ceramics instructor and artist for over 30 years\, who currently serves as a resident artist at Cobb Mountain Art and Ecology. Drawing inspiration from nature\, ancient Celtic symbols\, and the Wheel of the Year\, her sculptures act as portals to ancestral wisdom.

What started as gatherings with friends and decades of personal experience\, transformed me with the results I achieved. So many of my students have also achieved great success. Their testimonials are shared below. Now it’s YOUR turn! \nHead into the new year with impact. Get clarity and focus. Live the life you’ve imagined.\nThis workshop is for you if: \n\nYou want to level up in some aspect of your life\nYou have been dreaming of starting something\nYou want to get laser-focused on your goals\nYou’re an action-taker\n\nCourse Flow (2 hours): \n\nVision board basics: why\, what\, how?\nScience behind visualization\nShort meditation to get you prepared for your vision board\nTime to journal\nStart your vision board\nGetting results once you’ve created your vision board\nEach participant also receives a special gift\n\nWhat you need to bring: \n\nJournal and pen for the writing portion of the workshop\nPhotos\, images that you want to put on your board\nOpen mind + a smile\n\nWhat past participants have said about my vision board workshops: \nAbsolutely recommend! It was a chance to organize my thoughts and goals in an intentional way and then express them in a collage of images and phrases and colors that I “attracted” and was meant to see and use. It’s like a micro version of the universe helping you with whatever you are trying to accomplish. I also got a chance to connect with other creative entrepreneurs. It was an inspirational time. – Malia Jade\, Music Theorist & Entrepreneur \nClarissa’s beautifully guided workshop was just what I needed to feel inspired and empowered. Can’t wait for another one! -Eva Gardner\, Musician/Bassist to Cher\, Moby\, Pink\, and more! \nI attended Clarissa’s Vision board event\, it was such a well put together event\, meaningful and just right amount of unstructured\, for everyone to create! No doubt Clarissa brings many years of a diverse background in art and psychology that makes her a success in assisting others as well! – Joanna Revel\, Owner Blue Violet Boutique & Captured Corners Photography \nThis workshop was just what I needed! And the atmosphere\, space\, and energy here was over and above what I expected. I strongly recommend everyone who’s ready to create a vision for themselves\, get clear\, and have a playful time. SUMMARY:Vroman's: Merrill Joan Gerber presents Revelation at the Food Bank
DESCRIPTION:These powerful essays share critical moments of a writer’s life: scenes from sixty years of passionate married love; suicides faced and suicide contemplated; trauma at the DMV; a night lost searching for a harpsichord in the mountains of Florence\, Italy; the tale of a beloved cousin whose plane is shot down by Japanese Zeros; and a precious friendship between two women writers derailed by the poisons of religion and politics. In the titular essay (included in Best American Essays 2023) a food bank\, assuaging the pandemic’s terrors with gifts of food and prayers\, becomes a portal for intimate confidences entrusted to us by a voice of unspoiled authenticity and perennial vigor.

SUMMARY:SCCM: Diwali Celebration and Dance performance
DESCRIPTION:Diwali is known as the festival of lights. The festival is named after the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that are lit outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects them from spiritual darkness. Come join us SCCM as they welcome Bollypop LA\, a local Indian dance performance group that will teach children and families about the culture of India through the dance art form. After the performance\, we will learn more about the celebration through art activities.
