SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Jessie Rosen\, in conversation with Cindy Chupack\, discusses The Heirloom
DESCRIPTION:The answer to the biggest question of her life lies in someone else’s past. \nShea Anderson’s beloved Nonna had endless rules for a happy\, healthy life: avoid owls\, never put a hat on a bed\, and never\, ever accept a marriage proposal that comes with an heirloom ring. Happily ever after is hard enough without bad karma in the mix.\nNaturally\, panic sets in when Shea’s boyfriend\, John\, proposes with an heirloom ring. Yes is her answer\, but Nonna’s warning sets Shea on a mission to ensure the ring contains forever energy: She will find its previous owners wherever they may be. With the help of her long-suffering big sister and a nosy journalist eager for a big story\, Shea embarks on a journey that takes her from Los Angeles and New York to Italy and Portugal. \nSophisticated\, cinematic\, and full of lively observations\, The Heirloom is a diamond-sharp read for everyone who’s ever tried to make their own good luck.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Christina Vo discusses My Vietnam\, Your Vietnam: A Father Flees. a Daughter Returns. a Dual Memoir.
DESCRIPTION:In this captivating\, heartfelt dual memoir\, Christina Vo and her father\, Nghia M. Vo\, delve into themes of their identity\, heritage\, and the tragic multi-generational ordeals of war\, with intertwined stories that present a multifaceted portrayal of Vietnam and its profound influence on shaping both familial bonds and individual identities across time. \nNghia M. Vo left Vietnam in April 1975 with only the clothes on his back\, following the US withdrawal of troops and the fall of Saigon. After a harrowing two-month journey\, he found himself in a refugee camp outside Harrisburg\, Pennsylvania where he began the painful process of reconnecting with his family and rebuilding his life as a medical doctor. Christina Vo\, Nghia’s daughter\, grew up in the US. As a restless young adult\, she felt a longing to connect with her heritage and soon moved to Hanoi in former North Vietnam–much to her father’s distress–to discover a country that had changed dramatically since the war\, yet retained many of the ancient traits experienced by her ancestors. \nCaptivating in its fluid movement and evocative depictions of place\, My Vietnam\, Your Vietnam offers readers a rich\, multilayered exploration of Vietnam through two very distinct voices and perspectives. The memoir’s exploration of healing the trauma suffered by war refugees and their families echoes far beyond the personal experience of the two authors\, providing a path to discussion of reconciliation and hope.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Holly Gramazio discusses The Husbands
DESCRIPTION:When Lauren returns home to her flat in London late one night\, she is greeted at the door by her husband\, Michael. There’s only one problem–she’s not married. She’s never seen this man before in her life. But according to her friends\, her much-improved decor\, and the photos on her phone\, they’ve been together for years. \nAs Lauren tries to puzzle out how she could be married to someone she can’t remember meeting\, Michael goes to the attic to change a lightbulb and abruptly disappears. In his place\, a new man emerges\, and a new\, slightly altered life re-forms around her. Realizing that her attic is creating an infinite supply of husbands\, Lauren confronts the question: If swapping lives is as easy as changing a lightbulb\, how do you know you’ve taken the right path? When do you stop trying to do better and start actually living?

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: TICKETED - Vroman’s presents Alua Arthur discusses Briefly Perfectly Human
DESCRIPTION:For her clients and everyone who has been inspired by her humanity\, Alua Arthur is a friend at the end of the world. As our country’s leading death doula\, she’s spreading a transformative message: thinking about your death–whether imminent or not–will breathe wild\, new potential into your life. \nWarm\, generous\, and funny AF\, Alua supports and helps manage end-of-life care on many levels. The business matters\, medical directives\, memorial planning; but also honoring the quiet moments\, when monitors are beeping and loved ones have stepped out to get some air–or maybe not shown up at all–and her clients become deeply contemplative and want to talk. Aching\, unfinished business often emerges. Alua has been present for thousands of these sacred moments–when regrets\, fears\, secret joys\, hidden affairs\, and dim realities are finally said aloud. When this happens\, Alua focuses her attention at the pulsing center of her clients’ anguish and creates space for them\, and sometimes their loved ones\, to find peace. \nThis has had a profound effect on Alua\, who was already no stranger to death’s periphery. Her family fled a murderous coup d’état in Ghana in the 1980s. She has suffered major\, debilitating depressions. And her dear friend and brother-in-law died of lymphoma. Advocating for him in his final months is what led Alua to her life’s calling. She knows firsthand the power of bearing witness and telling the truth about life’s painful complexities\, because they do not disappear when you look the other way. They wait for you. \nBriefly Perfectly Human is a life-changing\, soul-gathering debut\, by a writer whose empathy\, tenderness\, and wisdom shimmers on the page. Alua Arthur combines intimate storytelling with a passionate appeal for loving\, courageous end-of-life care–what she calls “death embrace.” Hers is a powerful testament to getting in touch with something deeper in our lives\, by embracing the fact of our own mortality. “Hold that truth in your mind\,” Alua says\, “and wondrous things will begin to grow around it.” (Mariner Books) \nTembi Locke is a New York Times bestselling author\, TV producer\, actor\, and screenwriter with a passion for connecting with her audience both on the page and on the screen. In partnership with Hello Sunshine\, Tembi served as co-creator and executive producer for the adaptation of her memoir\, “From Scratch: A Memoir of Love\, Sicily\, and Finding Home\,” for Netflix. The series\, “From Scratch\,” became an instant global hit\, spending weeks on Netflix’s Top Ten List in over thirty countries around the world and earning six NAACP Image Award nominations and the prestigious Los Angeles Film Italy award. Her aforementioned memoir was also a Reese’s Book Club pick and an instant bestseller. Tembi and her sister\, Attica\, are currently under an overall development deal with Universal Television \nIn addition to her accomplishments as a writer and producer\, Tembi is an accomplished actor with over sixty film and television credits. She most recently held a recurring role on Netflix’s hit show\, “Never Have I Ever.” Offscreen\, she is a nationally recognized speaker\, delivering keynotes on resilience\, loss\, creativity and the power of storytelling. Her TEDx talk has been viewed by individuals and nonprofits around the world. She launched her podcast\, “Lifted\,” which features dynamic women sharing their stories of what and who have lifted their lives. Through her work Tembi aims to inspire people to embrace resilience\, love\, and the power of community. \nThis ticketed event will take place in the Forum at All Saints Church located at 132 N Euclid Ave\, Pasadena. \nTickets include one copy of Briefly Perfectly Human which will be handed out at check-in.\nA book signing will follow the discussion.

SUMMARY:SCCM: Connections Exhibits and Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Connections is a public project produced for the Southern California Children’s Museum by the nonprofit Drawing Together in collaboration with four artists: Karen Godfrey and Mary Duman from Wrightwood and Amy Bauer and Emily Gallagher from Los Angeles. The exhibit and workshops aim to explore our connection to each other and the planet and address social isolation. This project is made possible by an Impact Grant from the California Arts Council\, a state granting agency. \nWorkshop: April 27th at 11:30 – Interconnected Wonders \nThe Interconnected Wonders workshop offers cooperative activities to experience a felt sense of our place in the larger web of life on Earth. Children will be invited to connect through a community connection action and imaginative play dress-up activity. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nKaren Godfrey: As a mixed media artist\, I am richly inspired and intrigued by the raw wild beauty inherent in the immense and minute wonders of Life itself. Amy explores environmental themes and ties them into an investigation of the likenesses and frictions between her urban life and her folk art aesthetic. \nEmily Gallagher: Emily Gallagher is a soprano and community-based artist living in Los Angeles. She has performed in the United States and Europe and works to unite communities through the arts through programming that is accessible and engaging for a diverse audience. \nMary Duman: Mary Duman is an experienced ceramics instructor and artist for over 30 years\, who currently serves as a resident artist at Cobb Mountain Art and Ecology. SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Shaina Steinberg discusses Under the Paper Moon
DESCRIPTION:It’s 1942\, and as far as her father knows\, Evelyn Bishop\, heiress to an aeronautics fortune\, is working as a translator in London. In truth\, Evelyn–daring\, beautiful\, and as adept with a rifle as she is in five languages–has joined the Office of Strategic Services as a spy. Her goal is personal: to find her brother\, who is being held as a POW in a Nazi labor camp. Through one high-risk mission after another she is paired with the reckless and rebellious Nick Gallagher\, growing ever close to him until the war’s end brings with it an act of deep betrayal. \nSix years later\, Evelyn is back home in Los Angeles\, working as a private investigator. The war was supposed to change everything\, yet Evelyn\, contemplating marriage to her childhood sweetheart\, feels stifled by convention. Then the suspected cheating husband she’s tailing is murdered\, and suddenly Evelyn is back in Nick’s orbit again. \nTeaming up for a final mission\, Evelyn and Nick begin to uncover the true nature of her case– and realize that the war has followed them home. For beyond the public horrors waged by nations there are countless secret\, desperate acts that still reverberate on both continents\, and threaten everything Evelyn holds dear.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: James Charles Darnborough discusses The Gambler’s Game
DESCRIPTION:In the twilight of the 19th century\, as the Old West collides with the opulence of the Gilded Age\, one man embarks on a journey that will redefine his life. The Gambler’s Game is a captivating historical fiction saga that follows the extraordinary life of a mid-western baseball player turned high-stakes gambler. His audacious spirit leads him from the dust chocked plains to the refined ambiance of English garden parties and the allure of Belle Epoque Monte Carlo. \nThis romantic and fast-paced tale will transport you to a time when anything was possible\, where dreams were chased\, and risks were taken. \nThis is a story of self-discovery in a rapidly changing world. The Gambler’s Game lures readers into a realm where the echoes of gunshots meet the clinking of champagne glasses\, and the magnificent network of railways and steamships takes the reader on grand adventures. \nBill ultimately finds himself torn between his love of gambling and a woman who might make him give it all up.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Kaveh Akbar discusses Martyr!
DESCRIPTION:Cyrus Shams is a young man grappling with an inheritance of violence and loss: his mother’s plane was shot down over the skies of the Persian Gulf in a senseless accident; and his father’s life in America was circumscribed by his work killing chickens at a factory farm in the Midwest. Cyrus is a drunk\, an addict\, and a poet\, whose obsession with martyrs leads him to examine the mysteries of his past–toward an uncle who rode through Iranian battlefields dressed as the angel of death to inspire and comfort the dying\, and toward his mother\, through a painting discovered in a Brooklyn art gallery that suggests she may not have been who or what she seemed. \nKaveh Akbar’s Martyr! is a paean to how we spend our lives seeking meaning–in faith\, art\, ourselves\, others. (Knopf Publishing Group) \n“Kaveh Akbar is one of my favorite writers. Ever.” –Tommy Orange\, Pulitzer Prize-nominated author of There There \n“The best novel you’ll ever read about the joy of language\, addiction\, displacement\, martyrdom\, belonging\, homesickness.” –Lauren Groff\, best-selling author of Matrix and Fates and Furies

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Michael Ramos discusses The After: A Veteran's Notes on Coming Home
DESCRIPTION:When Michael Ramos enlisted in the Navy and was assigned to serve as a chaplain’s bodyguard thirteen days before 9/11\, he had no idea he would soon be sent to Iraq. But he embraced the posting\, combat service\, and career for a decade\, until\, at age thirty-four\, the military told him his skill set was no longer relevant. Through divorce and remarriage\, his son’s choice to enlist in the Marines\, the loss of friends to war and suicide\, and his inability to sleep or rest\, Michael struggled with the return to civilian life\, and particularly with civilian attitudes toward veterans. \nIn twenty-four concussive\, embodied\, and nonlinear essays\, Michael creates a challenging and complex portrait of what it means to be a warrior\, civilian\, veteran\, father\, husband\, and teacher–for he ultimately uses the skills he developed in the military to help others find meaning in their lives. While this may sound like a redemption story\, it is instead a brutally honest portrayal that refuses easy answers and seeks to help other war veterans realize they’re not alone as they search for their place in the world.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Simone Gorrindo discusses The Wives: A Memoir
DESCRIPTION:When her new husband joins an elite Army unit\, Simone Gorrindo is uprooted from New York City and dropped into Columbus\, Georgia–a town so foreign she might as well have landed on the moon. With her husband frequently deployed\, Simone is left to find her place in this new world\, alone–until she meets the wives. \nGorrindo gives us an intimate look into the inner lives of a remarkable group of women and a tender\, unflinching portrait of a marriage. A love story\, an unforgettable coming-of-age tale\, and a bracing tour of the intractable divisions that plague our country today\, The Wives offers a rare and powerful gift: a hopeful stitch in the fabric of a torn America.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Yulin Kuang\, in conversation with Candice Lim\, discusses How to End a Love Story
DESCRIPTION:Helen Zhang hasn’t seen Grant Shepard once in the thirteen years since the tragic accident that bound their lives together forever. \nNow a bestselling author\, Helen pours everything into her career. She’s even scored a coveted spot in the writers’ room of the TV adaptation of her popular young adult novels\, and if she can hide her imposter syndrome and overcome her writer’s block\, surely the rest of her life will fall into place too. LA is the fresh start she needs. After all\, no one knows her there. Except… \nGrant has done everything in his power to move on from the past\, including building a life across the country. And while the panic attacks have never quite gone away\, he’s well liked around town as a screenwriter. He knows he shouldn’t have taken the job on Helen’s show\, but it will open doors to developing his own projects that he just can’t pass up. \nGrant’s exactly as Helen remembers him–charming\, funny\, popular\, and lovable in ways that she’s never been. And Helen’s exactly as Grant remembers too–brilliant\, beautiful\, closed off. But working together is messy\, and electrifying\, and Helen’s parents\, who have never forgiven Grant\, have no idea he’s in the picture at all. \nWhen secrets come to light\, they must reckon with the fact that theirs was never meant to be any kind of love story. And yet… the key to making peace with their past–and themselves–might just lie in holding on to each other in the present. (Avon Books) \nCandice Lim is the co-host of ICYMI\, Slate’s podcast about internet culture. She comes to Slate from NPR\, where she was an assistant producer and occasional panelist on Pop Culture Happy Hour. She graduated from Boston University and hails from Orange County\, California.

SUMMARY:Boston Court Pasadena: Nolan Shaheed
DESCRIPTION:Local Jazz legend Nolan Shaheed joins his brilliant trumpet stylings with his dedicated band of great musicians to share a program of hot Jazz on the Boston Court Pasadena stage for the first time. \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nNolan Shaheed has achieved his world class standing in two varied genres. He holds a world record in running and has musical talent that has taken him all over the world playing trumpet to back-up remarkable performers notably Marvin Gaye\, Stevie Wonder\, Diana Ross and Phil Collins. He has also performed and toured with: Eddie Harris\, Teddy Edwards\, Duke Ellington Orchestra\, Lionel Hampton Orchestra\, Jeannie & Jimmy Cheatham and Francisco Aquabea. Notwithstanding\, Shaheed is in demand as a studio musician and has recently released the album\, Lamentations From The Middle Passage. \nBorn in 1949\, this California native knew he had athletic talent at an early age. Before entering competitive track as a high school sophomore\, Shaheed enjoyed beating all-comers in around-the-block races. He was also involved in basketball\, baseball and football during his formative years as a member of the Pasadena Boys Club. During the time that Shaheed excelled as a high school track star\, he was also making a name for himself as an outstanding trumpeter. He was named to the All-City-Band and All-State-Band. Thankfully\, his passion for the trumpet was recognized by his mother\, who permitted him to relinquish the violin at age 12 and begin his remarkable dedication to the trumpet. He credits his musical shift to listening to recordings of Louie Armstrong\, the great jazz trumpeter. \nShaheed had the speed to qualify for the Olympic trials as a runner but did not pursue this path. He recognized there was not the money in track that his musical talent would garnish. Therefore\, running became an avocation and a supplement to his musical career. As he puts it\, “Running made my trumpet playing better\, which gave me an incentive to run.” While touring with phenomenal musicians\, Shaheed honed his running skills and built the conviction to become an Ageless/Timeless Athlete. “When I was on the road\, I always jogged ten miles. I did my best work writing music when on a nice long run\,” Shaheed stated.
