SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Kevin Fedarko discusses A Walk in the Park
DESCRIPTION:A few years after quitting his job to follow an ill-advised dream of becoming a guide on the Colorado River\, Kevin Fedarko was approached by his best friend\, the National Geographic photographer Pete McBride\, with a vision as bold as it was harebrained. Together\, they would embark on an end-to-end traverse of the Grand Canyon\, a journey that\, McBride promised\, would be “a walk in the park.” Against his better judgment\, Fedarko agreed to the scheme\, unaware that the small cluster of experts who had completed the crossing billed it as “the toughest hike in the world.” \nThe ensuing ordeal\, which lasted more than a year\, revealed a place that was deeper\, richer\, and far more complex than anything the two men had imagined–and came within a hair’s breadth of killing them both. They struggled to make their way through the all but impenetrable reaches of its truest wilderness\, a vertical labyrinth of thousand-foot cliffs and crumbling ledges where water is measured out by the teaspoon and every step is fraught with peril–and where\, even today\, there is still no trail along the length of the country’s best-known and most iconic park. \nAlong the way\, veteran long-distance hikers ushered them into secret pockets\, invisible to the millions of tourists gathered on the rim\, where only a handful of humans have ever laid eyes. Members of the canyon’s eleven Native American tribes brought them face-to-face with layers of history that forced them to reconsider myths at the center of our national parks–and exposed them to the impinging threats of commercial tourism. Even Fedarko’s dying father\, who had first pointed him toward the canyon more than forty years earlier but had never set foot there himself\, opened him to a new way of seeing the landscape.

SUMMARY:Vroman’s Bookstore: Jacqueline Winspear discusses The Comfort of Ghosts
DESCRIPTION:London\, 1945: Four adolescent orphans with a dark wartime history are squatting in a vacant Belgravia mansion–the owners having fled London under heavy Luftwaffe bombing. Psychologist and Investigator Maisie Dobbs visits the mansion on behalf of the owners and discovers that a demobilized soldier\, gravely ill and reeling from his experiences overseas\, has taken shelter with the group. \nMaisie’s quest to bring comfort to the youngsters and the ailing soldier brings to light a decades-old mystery concerning Maisie’s first husband\, James Compton\, who was killed while piloting an experimental fighter aircraft. As Maisie unravels the threads of her dead husband’s life\, she is forced to examine her own painful past and question beliefs she has always accepted as true.

Having previously studied jazz in classes at LACM with instructors such as Tierney Sutton (6-time Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist)\, Sara Leib\, and Steve Billman (Grammy-winning bassist)\, she thought it was the perfect time to apply her performing skills out in Los Angeles. After Kira decided to form a jazz group\, Kira & The Major 3 was born! This LA-based jazz quartet has a repertoire of over 40 standards from American jazz\, Brazilian jazz\, and Afro-Cuban music. \n  \n

SUMMARY:T. Boyle Tavern: Geeks Who Drink Trivia Night
DESCRIPTION:Modeled after pub quizzes in Ireland and the U.K.\, Geeks Who Drink is an authentic homegrown trivia quiz. It’s a great way to drink with friends\, without burning brain cells. And it’s where useless knowledge means everything. Our quizzes cover everything from Hungary to The Hunger Games\, from science to sports\, from the Billboard Hot 100 to Better Call Saul. Each quiz consists of seven rounds of eight questions\, in a variety of formats\, including audio and visual rounds. Teams can be up to six players\, so bring your smartest friends (or some likable dummies)—or come solo. We can always help you join a team! \nNo reservations are needed\, just show up! Winning teams get bar cash and other prizes\, depending on the venue. Bonus questions sprinkled throughout the quiz will net you additional goodies. But mostly it’s about establishing your dominance—or at least pleasantly surprising yourself. You’re into that\, right?

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: K.X. Song discusses The Night Ends with Fire
DESCRIPTION:The Three Kingdoms are at war\, but Meilin’s father refuses to answer the imperial draft. Trapped by his opium addiction\, he plans to sell Meilin for her dowry. But when Meilin discovers her husband-to-be is another violent\, ill-tempered man\, she realizes that nothing will change for her unless she takes matters into her own hands. \nThe very next day\, she disguises herself as a boy and enlists in her father’s place. \nIn the army\, Meilin’s relentless hard work brings her recognition\, friendship–and a growing closeness with Sky\, a prince turned training partner. SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Joseph Kanon discusses Shanghai
DESCRIPTION:After the violence of Kristallnacht (1938)\, European Jews\, now desperate to emigrate\, found the consular doors of the world closed to them. Only one port required no entry visa: Shanghai\, a self-governing Western trading enclave in what was technically Chinese territory\, a political anomaly that became an escape hatch–if you were lucky enough to afford a ticket on one of the great Lloyd liners sailing to the East and safety. \nDaniel Lohr was one of the lucky ones–lucky enough to have escaped the Gestapo when his colleagues in the resistance were caught\, lucky to have an uncle waiting in Shanghai\, lucky to find a casual shipboard flirtation turn unexpectedly passionate. But even lucky refugees have to confront the reality of Shanghai. With all their assets\, and passports confiscated by the Nazis\, they arrive penniless and stateless in a tumultuous\, nearly lawless city notorious for vice. When you can sink fast\, how far are you willing to go to survive? What lines do you cross? As Daniel tries to navigate his way through his uncle’s world in Shanghai’s fabled nightlife\, he finds himself increasingly ensnared in a maze where politics and crime are two sides of the same shiny coin. The trick\, his uncle tells him\, is to stay one step ahead. But how do you stay ahead of murder? How do you outrun your own past?

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Anton Hur\, in conversation with Elise Hu\, discusses Toward Eternity
DESCRIPTION:In a near-future world\, a new technological therapy is quickly eradicating cancer. The body’s cells are entirely replaced with nanites–robot or android cells which not only cure those afflicted but leaves them virtually immortal. \nLiterary researcher Yonghun teaches an AI how to understand poetry and creates a living\, thinking machine he names Panit\, meaning Beloved\, in honor of his husband. When Yonghun–himself a recipient of nanotherapy–mysteriously vanishes into thin air and then just as suddenly reappears\, the event raises disturbing questions. What happened to Yonghun\, and though he’s returned\, is he really himself anymore? \nWhen Dr. Beeko\, the scientist who holds the patent to the nanotherapy technology\, learns of Panit\, he transfers its consciousness from the machine into an android body\, giving it freedom and life. As Yonghun\, Panit\, and other nano humans thrive–and begin to replicate–their development will lead them to a crossroads and a choice with existential consequences. \nExploring the nature of intelligence and the unexpected consequences of progress\, the meaning of personhood and life\, and what we really have to fear from technology and the future\, Toward Eternity is a gorgeous\, thought-provoking novel that challenges the notion of what makes us human–and how love survives even the end of that humanity.
