SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Michael Yang discusses & signs Coming Alive on the Ride: A Memoir of Motorcycle Travel\, Self-Discovery\, and Korean Heritage
DESCRIPTION:Answering the call of the open road–from Seoul to Silicon Valley to riding 40\,000 life-changing miles across America \nWhen Michael Yang bought his first motorcycle\, he was a teenager who’d just moved to America. He knew little English and had few friends. Still\, whenever he rode that green Yamaha\, he felt more in touch with life’s possibilities. The bike was stolen a few months later\, but Yang never forgot the feeling. \nIt wasn’t until later in life that Yang got back on a motorcycle. By then\, he’d settled into Silicon Valley amidst the technology revolution; and founded\, scaled\, and sold a half-billion-dollar tech startup. Then\, during the upheaval of the dot-com bubble burst and a few failed attempts to get new companies off the ground\, Yang felt a strong pull to reengage with himself. Sensing that this midlife crisis was an opportunity to do something fun and exciting\, he revved up his bike and began riding into unfamiliar landscapes. Coming Alive on the Ride narrates more than 40\,000 miles of his travels\, from California’s coast to the upper reaches of Alaska\, Canada’s far eastern edge\, and more. \nOne thing about long motorcycle trips is that there’s a lot of time to think. Yang describes the unique bliss of watching the miles pass beneath two wheels as he relives moments from his past–growing up in Korea during the turbulent years after the Korean War\, and moving to America as a fourteen-year-old–all the while taking in North America’s astounding scenery\, from the stillness of the desert to heart-racing glimpses of a bison herds and grand mountain ranges. Somewhere along the way\, it happens: Past experiences and future aspirations converge into a present discovery. This inspiring memoir is a reminder that\, if we slow down and tune in our senses\, adventure inspires and instructs the way nothing else can.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: TICKETED - Valerie Bertinelli signs Getting Naked: The Quiet Work of Becoming Perfectly Imperfect
DESCRIPTION:With her signature warmth and disarming humor\, the beloved actress and New York Times bestselling author strips away the polished façade and shares what it’s really like to grow older\, love harder\, and start over. Now in her mid-sixties\, Valerie reflects on the hard-won lessons of aging\, self-worth\, and letting go. From her experiences with menopause\, relationships\, and family trauma\, she writes with clarity and compassion about the insecurities that have haunted her for decades: shame and anxiety about her body\, and the false belief that her value depended on perfection. Through it all\, Valerie reflects on the quiet\, daily work of self-acceptance—the kind that doesn’t make headlines but changes lives. Getting Naked isn’t just a story of survival. It’s a reckoning—with her past\, her family history\, and the generational pain that shaped her. It’s about the myths we believe when we’re young—about beauty\, love\, success—and how we carry them until they break us open. It’s about unlearning the script that says women must please\, endure\, and stay silent. \nThe result is a deeply personal\, unexpectedly funny\, and profoundly uplifting look at the inner journey we all share. Getting Naked isn’t about vulnerability for vulnerability’s sake. It’s about finally letting go of the need to be perfect\, quieting the harsh inner critic\, and choosing compassion over judgment. After all\, it’s never too late to make peace with yourself—and to fall madly in love with the perfectly imperfect person you already are.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Chris Jennings\, in conversation with Jim Newton\, discusses & signs End of Days: Ruby Ridge\, the Apocalypse\, and the Unmaking of America
DESCRIPTION:The gripping story of the Ruby Ridge siege\, showing how the historic standoff between federal agents and a white-separatist family set the stage for the conspiracy-laced politics of the Trump era. \n“Vivid\, frightening\, and fascinating…This book blew me away and opened my eyes.”–Walter Isaacson\, author of The Code Breaker and Elon Musk \nOn August 21\, 1992\, shots rang out while federal agents were surveilling a cabin in Boundary County\, Idaho as part of an operation to arrest Randy Weaver–a reclusive\, mountain-dwelling survivalist–for failure to appear in court on a gun charge. When Weaver finally surrendered to the authorities eleven days later\, his wife\, son\, and dog lay dead\, as did a US Marshal. Ever since\, America has been trying to make sense of what happened on Ruby Ridge. Today\, the question could not be more urgent\, as the shock waves from Ruby Ridge have amplified and compounded\, cracking the very foundations of our democracy. \nIn End of Days\, Chris Jennings explains the significance of this historic siege by setting the story of the Weaver family within the long history of apocalyptic Christianity in the United States\, illuminating the ways in which that faith has gradually transformed the nation. The strain of doomsday Christianity that gripped the Weavers\, he shows\, was grounded in a particular reading of biblical prophecy that can be traced back to the 1870s and up through the twentieth-century rise of Christian fundamentalism to the right-wing conspiracism that now defines American society and politics. The events at Ruby Ridge acted as an accelerant for this spreading worldview\, and are essential to understanding the crisis that our nation confronts today.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Ava Morgyn discusses & signs Only Spell Deep
DESCRIPTION:Rebecca meets The Craft in this dark\, atmospheric novel of one witch rediscovering her power while on the run from another willing to kill her for it. \nFrom the USA Today bestselling author of The Bane Witch! \nJudeth Cole has always had certain uncanny abilities. But when she arrived at Solidago\, her grandfather’s estate by the sea\, she was forced to keep them secret. There she lived a harsh life under his rule and the haunting legacy of her late grandmother\, Aurelia. Until the fateful day she ignited a fire with her magic. It was the last time she saw her family alive. \nSeventeen years later\, she’s living in Seattle as Jude Clark\, and failing at life\, when she makes a last detour through her favorite bookstore\, selecting a book to read as she waits to die. But when she pulls it from the shelf\, an invitation to her for a clandestine midnight meeting slips out. \nJude is quickly swept up into a world of secrets and magic\, discovering a circle of powerful new companions led by the mysterious\, enigmatic Arla. The source of their magic\, Arla tells her\, is an entity\, trapped and bound\, that they call The Fathom. But Jude swiftly realizes Arla wants this power all to herself\, and that she’s willing to kill for it. \nTerrified\, Jude turns to Levi\, the handsome bookseller who’s seen her at her worst. With his help\, she begins a research journey that leads her all the way back to Solidago\, the house she swore to never return to. Now\, the Fathom threatening to break free and Arla on the hunt\, Jude must finally face her past to save her future. \nAva Morgyn’s Only Spell Deep is a novel that takes readers on a journey into a dark\, glittering world of magic\, a place where power should never be caged and misplaced trust can have deadly consequences. \n“Only Spell Deep is beautifully written and richly immersive\, weaving a gothic atmosphere with supernatural tension in a story about reclaiming one’s power in more ways than one and unraveling generational trauma. Morgyn builds a world that feels both mythic and real\, where gods walk among us and the most terrifying magic is the kind passed down through blood. This novel cast a lasting spell on me. I was all in.” – Katy Foraker\, author of Memories\, Lies\, and Other Binds \n“Only Spell Deep is a dark parable of feminine rage and power\, blending horror\, fantasy\, and mythology seamlessly into the streets and hidden places of modern-day Seattle. With gorgeous prose\, Ava Morgyn weaves a spell of her own and gives us a courageous heroine to root for.” – Alyssa Palombo\, author of The Spellbook of Katrina Van Tassel

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Scott Broker & Sheldon Costa discuss & sign The Disappointment and The Great Work
DESCRIPTION:Set during a doom-fated vacation to the Oregon coast\, The Disappointment follows a couple trying to hold close to one another while a bent reality–warped by personal losses and an ever-increasing drift toward the surreal–threatens to unravel them \nIt’s the night before a much-needed vacation\, and Jack–a former playwright mourning his failed career–catches his husband\, Randy\, packing his mother’s urn. They had agreed: no mother on this trip. Parents\, living or otherwise\, aren’t the ideal guests for romantic getaways. But Randy has been carrying his mother’s remains everywhere since her death\, and he isn’t ready to let go now. \nDespite its natural beauty and kitschy charm\, the Oregon coast does not provide the respite the couple seeks. Instead\, their surroundings and encounters with locals grow increasingly surreal as the days pass. An overly dedicated Method actor\, tantra-obsessed neighbors\, and a child environmentalist who may be able to communicate with the dead are but a few of the characters whose presence exposes long-simmering tensions that threaten to undo Jack and Randy’s marriage–to say nothing of their hold on reality. \nTold with sly\, irreverent humor and shot through with dark currents of envy and longing for something other than what one has\, The Disappointment explores the mutual exhilaration and terror of being placed center stage in one’s own life. \nThe Great Work\n“A moody\, atmospheric\, and singular novel which navigates corners of American history through the complicated territory of horror\, the monstrous\, and the heroic.”–Kelly Link\, best-selling author of The Book of Love \nAn alchemist and his teenage nephew hunt down a legend in this profound and unsettling speculative Western\, for fans of Karen Russell and Victor LaValle. \nAlone in a frontier town in the nineteenth-century Pacific Northwest\, Gentle Montgomery is grieving his best friend. Liam was an alchemist\, killed when he tried to capture a creature that shouldn’t exist: a giant salamander that drives men mad. When Gentle’s nephew\, Kitt\, arrives at his doorstep\, the two set out together to track the monster down so they can use its blood in an alchemical formula that will bring Liam back to life. \nIt’s a hard and haunted journey. The salamander produces surreal nightmares and waking dreams of a blighted\, burning future. And Gentle and Kitt soon find themselves pursued by a bloodthirsty hunter\, a sadistic judge\, and a doomsday cult\, all of whom have their own plans for the river monster. Armed with nothing but Liam’s alchemical notebooks\, they must not only find the salamander but learn to understand it–and the terrifying visions it causes–before it’s too late. And as Gentle struggles to comprehend this harrowing experience\, it becomes clear that the Great Work of the alchemists may pale in comparison to the small work of human connection. \nSheldon Costa’s dark\, vivid\, and strangely hopeful debut novel is a supernatural adventure through the wilderness of friendship and the rotten heart of the early American empire.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Woody Brown presents Upward Bound: A Novel
DESCRIPTION:Upward Bound is not a place anyone dreams of spending their days. The dreary adult daycare center for Los Angeles’s disabled community is\, for many of its clients and staff\, a place of last resort. This includes Carlos\, a young aide who lost his mother as a boy and now works there alongside his beloved sister\, Mariana; Jorge\, the gentle nonspeaking giant whom Carlos seeks to befriend (and prevent from escaping); Tom\, a beautiful young man with cerebral palsy who pines for Ann\, the summer lifeguard at the center’s pool who feels out of her depth. Then there’s Dave\, Upward Bound’s director\, who came to L.A. to pursue an acting career but now channels his passion into staging an overly ambitious holiday show starring the center’s irrepressible clients. Framing these intertwined narratives–and connecting them in surprising\, shattering ways–is the riveting and sometimes ironic testimony of Walter\, a recent community college graduate who\, after a family tragedy\, must return to the company of his disabled peers. \nIn Upward Bound\, Woody Brown has created an indelible\, authentic\, and profoundly moving group portrait of autism and other disabilities\, all illuminated by his empathy\, sly sense of humor\, and enormous gifts as a novelist. With remarkable sophistication\, insight\, and creativity\, Brown depicts a community too-often invisible in literature and society. Filled with characters you won’t soon forget\, Upward Bound will inspire and touch you\, teaching you as much about yourself as the tender\, miraculous world behind the center’s doors.

SUMMARY:Vroman'sBookstore: TICKETED - Andrew McCarthy discusses & signs Who Needs Friends: An Unscientific Examination of Male Friendship Across America
DESCRIPTION:A moving and provocative exploration of male friendship and loneliness\, from New York Times bestselling author\, filmmaker\, and actor Andrew McCarthy as he crisscrosses the country to reconnect with his friends. \n“You don’t really have any friends\, do you\, Dad?” \nA seemingly innocuous\, if direct\, question from Andrew McCarthy’s son left him reeling. McCarthy did have friends\, but like so many other men\, the necessities of modern adult life had forced his friendships to the background. At one point his friends had been instrumental in broadening his horizons\, bolstering his courage\, providing safe harbor. Now\, McCarthy found himself questioning what had happened to those friendships\, whether he needed them\, what he valued\, and what he had to offer. A simple question had become a moment that demanded a reckoning. \nWho Needs Friends charts McCarthy’s journey over nearly ten thousand miles behind the wheel\, following him on often-unexpected travels through Appalachia\, the Mississippi Delta\, the Chihuahuan Desert\, the Rocky Mountains with one driving purpose: to reconnect. Along the way he talks to countless men about their male friendships\, from cowboys and blues musicians to preachers and rootless teens. What began as a simple desire to catch up with a few friends turned into a deep exploration of the challenges and rewards that men experience in forming bonds with each other. \nIn McCarthy’s own words\, “It turns out that guys have a difficult time with friendship.” But that’s not the way it needs to be.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Nadine Takvorian discusses & signs Armaveni: A Graphic Novel of the Armenian Genocide
DESCRIPTION:A bold\, autobiographical graphic novel chronicling one girl’s quest to uncover her family’s history during the Armenian genocide. \nNadine loves stories and her mother loves to tell them–all but one. Nadine would give anything to learn about her family’s history in Armenia and Turkey–where they came from and how they came to America–but it is just too painful for her parents. All Nadine knows is that they were caught up in the Armenian genocide. \nUntil one day the dam bursts. And through that flood of stories and memories\, and a trip back to their people’s homelands\, Nadine discovers a key to unlocking her own heritage and the courage to speak up when injustice rears its head again. \nTold in interwoven historical\, contemporary\, and fantastical sequences\, Armaveni is a gripping graphic novel debut and a much-needed historical document.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Lisa Lee\, in conversation with Muriel Leung\, discusses & signs American Han
DESCRIPTION:“A pulsating signal from the liminal zone where the American dream meets the American nightmare.” –Viet Thanh Nguyen\, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Sympathizer \nJane and her brother Kevin Kim embody the model minority myth until both depart from the path: Jane drops out of law school without telling her parents\, and her brother Kevin gives up his promising tennis career and cuts himself off from the family. Their parents feel equally lost in a country that claims to support them and yet in which they can find no place. When Kevin goes missing\, no one recognizes his absence as the warning sign it is\, until it erupts in a moment that indicts them all. \nBoth deeply serious and absurdly funny\, AMERICAN HAN is a story about striving and assimilation\, difficult love\, and family fidelity. A searing and probing portrait that challenges assumptions about the immigrant experience\, Lisa Lee’s debut introduces a powerful new voice on the literary landscape. \n“A fantastic sleight-of-hand. Lee makes us look one way while all sorts of stuff comes into focus around us. This is a novel about a singular and eccentric family but yields understanding about so much more. A beautiful\, important novel that will leave a mark.” — Percival Everett\, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of James

SUMMARY:Pasadena Heritage: The Museum of Me: Learning to Talk About Ourselves for Posterity
DESCRIPTION:Joshua Goode is a Professor of History who has also managed a museum studies program and has worked internationally with museums to contemplate how they tell their stories and to whom.  He will lead an exercise in all of us becoming the Curator and Director of the Museum of Me\, putting on a show about us. \nMuseums generally rely on objects to convey stories\, ideas\, knowledge\, a sense of culture and belonging\, and meaning.  Museums can tell collective stories of a people\, a nation\, a small group\, a family\, a time\, and a place.  Museums are also meant to hold collections and tell their stories in perpetuity\, to stand the test of time.  But they also have to think about the audience.  What do they know? How might they react?  Who is walking in the front door?  Who isn’t visiting?  So\, in this hands-on activity driven evening\, we are going to wear a lot of museum hats to talk about ourselves.  We are going to be curators\, thinking about how we present ourselves through objects.  We are going to be museum directors who want to make sure their audiences are served by the exhibition.  And\, we will be collections managers who want to know what objects are going to be used and make sure they don’t break! \n  \n
