SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Christina Hammonds Reed discusses & signs The Johnson Four
DESCRIPTION:A 1960s teen pop group determined to conquer the music world must contend with the cost of fame–and a ghost with a grisly past–in this riveting family story from the New York Times bestselling author of The Black Kids. \nOdysseus Johnson dreams of musical stardom for his three sons: Roman\, the rebel\, more interested in being a teenager than a performer; Rocco\, arguably the most talented of the bunch but different in a way the world doesn’t understand; and dutiful River\, the youngest\, who dreams of fame just like his dad. \nDriving back from another failed audition in Detroit\, the Johnson boys encounter the ghost of Christmas Jones the Third\, an effervescent\, if lonely\, little Black boy who carries the scars of his horrific past as an orphan and minstrel sensation. Desperate for family\, Christmas begs the Johnsons to bring him home with them. When Odysseus refuses\, Christmas stows away in the family Cadillac. \nDespite their initial horror\, Christmas becomes a part of the Johnson family. With the promise of opportunities in California\, Odysseus moves the family out west\, and the boys’ talent starts getting noticed. But just as the brothers are finally on the cusp of fame\, Christmas commits a violent act that wreaks havoc on the Johnsons’ lives\, and the family is torn asunder in the aftermath. Roman flees the country. Rocco is institutionalized. River’s solo star rises. Christmas disappears. \nSpanning decades\, roving from the rapacious music industry and the ravages of Vietnam to the dark corridors of a mental institution and the very planes of the afterlife\, The Johnson Four is epic in scope. And at its beating heart is the unforgettable story of a family trying to find their way back to one another.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Jasmin ‘Iolani Hakes\, discusses & signs The Pohaku
DESCRIPTION:From the award-winning author of Hula\, a dazzling saga that moves from Hawaii to California and back\, about the generations of women tasked with protecting the history and place that made them. \nA young woman lies in a hospital bed in a coma\, watched over by her estranged grandmother. Some say she jumped off the cliff; others say she was swept away by a wave. But her tutu at her bedside suspects something else is wrong\, that the reason for the hardship and heartbreak in their family history is tied to a story that she’s never told–one about a powerful stone\, the pohaku\, that her family was tasked with protecting generations ago. In fits and starts\, the grandmother begins . . . \nWe travel back in time to the eighteenth century\, when the explorer James Cook becomes the first European to visit the Hawaiian Islands. Cook arrives in pursuit of an ancient prophecy\, a key that would unlock the mysteries of the world\, but he is killed before he can learn about the mysterious stone–a stone born alongside future Hawaiian royalty\, the key to something even more powerful than Cook could have imagined. \nSo begins a thrilling family saga of the women charged with protecting the pohaku\, as it is taken from Hawai’i to California and possibly beyond\, bringing fortune to the well-intentioned and misfortune to the bad. But with each successive generation\, the fractures caused by its displacement widen until it becomes clear that the pohaku’s story must survive if there is to be any hope at all of the family’s–and a nation’s–reconciliation with their home\, with nature\, and with each other. \nReminiscent of Yaa Gyasi’s Homegoing\, Min Jin Lee’s Pachinko\, and Tommy Orange’s There\, There\, The Pohaku is an immersive and bold novel about the history\, perseverance\, and resilience of the Hawaiian people.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Christine Platt discusses & signs Less Is Liberation: Finding Freedom from a Life of Overwhelm
DESCRIPTION:From lifestyle trailblazer and author of The Afrominimalist’s Guide To Living with Less\, a practical guide to move beyond decluttering your space and\, instead\, declutter your life. \nLess Is Liberation welcomes those who are tired and weary to embark upon a journey of self-discovery. This is an invitation to understand the interconnectedness of overwhelm and our overall well-being. \nFor years\, the constant pursuit of success silently wreaked havoc on Christine Platt’s happiness and health. While taking a personal pause\, Christine discovered how her limiting beliefs about selfishness led to self-abandonment and a life of overwhelm. So\, she decided to use the same intentional living strategy that helped her reduce overconsumption: choose less. \nWith the perfect balance of wit and wisdom\, Christine shares the necessities to come into alignment with Self and offers a roadmap for anyone ready to do the same. Less Is Liberation is more than a self-help guide; it is a call-to-action to tap into our most underutilized superpower: being intentional with our choices. \n\nWe do not have to have so many things–we can choose less.\nWe do not have to have so many obligations–we can choose less.\nWe do not have to have so many priorities–we can choose less.\nWe do not have to have so many relationships that feel transactional–we can choose less.\n\nWe must simply learn how to be intentional about honoring ourselves. \nLess Is Liberation is an invitation to pause and begin the beautiful work of choosing ourselves over the profit and pleasure of others. It invites us to let go of behaviors that hinder our growth. It is time to embrace less as a gateway to find freedom from our lives of overwhelm\, and a pathway to the life we want and deserve. Because we are not here for a life of doing. We are here for a life of being.

SUMMARY:Pasadena Playhouse: Amadeus
DESCRIPTION:The stage is set at Pasadena Playhouse for a riveting\, white-hot rivalry between two composers: Antonio Salieri\, the court’s celebrated musician\, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart\, the vulgar prodigy whose brilliance threatens everything Salieri holds dear. SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Jacob Soboroff discusses & signs Firestorm: The Great Los Angeles Fires and America's New Age of Disaster
DESCRIPTION:A “gripping\, unshakeable firsthand account” (San Francisco Chronicle) of the firestorm that consumed Los Angeles\, from the MS NOW reporter and New York Times bestselling author of Separated\, who covered the fires on the ground as an LA native. \n“Read[s] like a sci-fi thriller.” –Los Angeles Times \nOn the morning of January 7\, 2025\, a message pinged the phone of Jacob Soboroff\, a national reporter for MS NOW. “Big Palisades fire. We are evacuating\,” his brother texted within minutes of the blaze engulfing the hillside behind the home where he and his pregnant wife were living. “Really bad.” An attached photo showed a huge black plume rising from behind the house\, an umbrella of smoke towering over everything they owned. Jacob rushed to the office of the bureau chief.\n“I should go. I grew up in the Palisades.”\nSoon he was on the front line of the blaze–his first live report of what would turn out to be weeks covering unimaginable destruction\, from both the Palisades Fire and the Eaton Fire\, in Altadena. In the days to come\, Soboroff appeared across the networks of NBC News as Los Angeles was ablaze\, met with displaced residents and workers\, and pressed Governor Gavin Newsom in an interview on Meet the Press. But no story Soboroff has covered at home or abroad–the trauma of family separation at the border\, the displacement of the war in Ukraine\, the collapse of order in Haiti–could have prepared him for reporting live as the hallmarks of his childhood were engulfed in flames around him while his hometown burned to the ground. \nBut for Soboroff\, questions remained after the fires were controlled: what had he just witnessed? How could it have happened? Is it inevitable that something will happen again? This set Soboroff off on months of reporting–with firefighters\, fire victims\, political leaders\, academics\, earth scientists\, wildlife biologists\, meteorologists\, and more–that made him keenly aware of how the misfortune of seeing his past carbonize was also a form of time travel into the dystopian world his children will inhabit. This is because the 2025 LA fires were not an isolated tragedy\, but rather they are a harbinger–“the fire of the future\,” in the words of one senior emergency management official.\nFirestorm is the story of the costliest wildfire in American history\, the people it affected\, and the deeply personal connection to one journalist covering it. It is a love letter to Los Angeles\, a yearning to understand the fires\, and why America’s new age of disaster we are living through portends that–without a reckoning of how Los Angeles burned–there is more yet\, and worse\, to come.

DESCRIPTION:She can handle the press…but can she handle the Palace? \nWith the British monarchy reeling from a wave of scandals\, young American politico Lauren Morgan is plucked from the White House press office to breathe new life into the Buckingham Palace communications team and improve the royal family’s streak of bad headlines. SUMMARY:Pasadena Heritage: Botanical Blueprints: The Pioneering Heritage of Anna Atkins
DESCRIPTION:Pasadena Heritage invites the public to step back into the Victorian era for a hands-on exploration of the “blueprints of nature.” This immersive heritage workshop celebrates the groundbreaking work of Anna Atkins (1799–1871)\, the English botanist and photographer who transformed scientific documentation through art and innovation. Atkins produced the first book illustrated entirely with photographs\, Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions (1843)\, using a revolutionary cameraless printing process that continues to captivate audiences today. \nWhat Participants Will Experience\nThe HistoryGuests will discover how Atkins used the cyanotype process—developed in 1842 by her family friend Sir John Herschel—to carefully document delicate botanical specimens such as ferns and algae. Her work beautifully bridged science\, art\, and early photography. \nThe ScienceThe workshop explores the chemistry behind the iconic “sun print.” Paper treated with iron salts reacts to ultraviolet light\, producing the rich Prussian blue tones that define cyanotypes. This elegant process reveals the powerful intersection of natural light and scientific discovery. \nThe CraftParticipants will create their own botanical cyanotype using locally gathered plant materials. By arranging specimens on light-sensitive paper and harnessing the power of sunlight\, each guest will produce an archival-quality print to take home—experiencing the timeless practice of preserving nature through handmade heritage\, just as Atkins did nearly two centuries ago. \nIdeal for artists\, nature lovers\, history enthusiasts\, and anyone curious about early photography\, this workshop offers a thoughtful opportunity to slow down\, observe closely\, and create something beautiful rooted in the past.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Simona Supekar\, discusses & signs Stock Photo (Object Lessons)
DESCRIPTION:Object Lessons is a series of short\, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things. \nPart memoir\, part cultural criticism\, Stock Photo mines the significance of the stock photo in our everyday lives\, from the ads and websites we browse\, to the menus and memes that we consume. Through interviews with stock photography experts\, photographers\, models\, consumers\, and other stakeholders\, Simona Supekar explores the evolution of the industry by tracing the creation of a stock photo from concept to usage while highlighting significant historical moments. \nSupekar weaves in her own experiences as a keyworder for a stock photography company while reckoning with her Asian American/South Asian identity in a post-9/11 world. Stock Photo also addresses how these images have the power to shape our perceptions about race\, class/caste\, gender\, ability\, and more\, thus underscoring the importance of representation even in something as innocuous as a stock photo.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Lars Kenseth reads from & signs Call Me Moby
DESCRIPTION:A lovable white whale tries to befriend a shipful of sailors with hilarious results\, in this clever debut from a celebrated New Yorker cartoonist and television writer. Perfect for fans of Jon Klassen and Jory John. \nMeet Physeter Macrocephalus – but you can call him Moby. \nHe’s got the BIGGEST toothy smile. He’s always up for a game of tag. And his backflips can’t be beat! Who wouldn’t want to be his pal? \nSo when he meets a ship full of sailors out on the ocean\, he just knows they will get along swimmingly. Moby is as fin-tastic and friendly as he can be\, but the guys still seem a little…salty. What could he be doing wrong? \nThis clever riff on the Melville classic is at its heart a story about how to make friends – and find ones who appreciate the real you.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Michelle Maryk\, discusses & signs The Found Object Society
DESCRIPTION:Description\nAn atmospheric speculative suspense novel following a mysterious society offering its members the chance to relive the death of another person—and the self-destructive woman determined to uncover its secrets \nThis ambitious\, genre-bending debut is perfect for fans of time-travel fiction including Matt Haig’s The Midnight Library and Gareth Brown’s The Book of Doors \nFor twenty years\, Greta Davenport has lived with the guilt of surviving the accident that killed her parents. She’s tested the limits of her own mortality ever since\, but little gives her the dopamine rush she craves. Not until the night she almost drunkenly crashes her car into a tree\, and a peculiar blank card slides under her front door—an invitation to the Found Object Society. What she discovers there is beyond comprehension: an opulent\, subterranean playground filled with aisles of objects from different eras and regions of the world. Pick an object and go on a voyage to relive the final moments of the person who died holding it\, along with an unparalleled\, irreplicable high. Greta’s hooked\, but she can’t quiet her questions about the society and its enigmatic creators\, the answers to which have implications far beyond her growing dependence on the voyages. Death is addictive\, and what she uncovers will put her entire life into question. \nA fever dream of a novel with episodic\, time-traveling chapters told from multiple points of view\, The Found Object Society examines the depraved whims of the ultrarich and the breadth of unresolved trauma—all while asking how grief and the choices we make in its aftermath can change the course of our lives. Michelle Maryk’s wholly original and ambitious debut opens an impeccably wrought speculative world of greed\, power\, and destiny. \n\n\nAbout the Author\nMichelle Maryk graduated from Cornell University with a degree in English and attended the Yale Writer’s Workshop. For the better part of twenty-five years\, she’s been a successful voiceover\, on-camera commercial\, and comedic actor\, and she is a dual Swedish and US citizen. The Found Object Society is her debut novel.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Elizabeth Day\, discusses & signs One of Us
DESCRIPTION:“Funny\, sharp\, sophisticated\, this is Elizabeth Day’s writing at its finest.” \n–Dolly Alderton\, New York Times bestselling author of Good Material \n“The thinking person’s thriller. A Trojan horse of a book–part Highsmith\, part Waugh–that hides within its superbly gripping plot a gimlet-eyed interrogation of class\, privilege and power.” \n–Lucy Foley \nWhen Fliss\, the eccentric grown daughter of the powerful Fitzmaurice clan\, is found dead on beach in Bali\, what seems like a tragic accident stirs more suspicion than closure for those who’ve traded favors with–and within–her family for decades. \nThere is Ben\, Fliss’s brother\, eager to minimize his sister’s passing\, since it’s suddenly clear he’s next in line to be Prime Minister. And Martin–Ben’s erstwhile best friend–who is just happy that Fliss’s memorial gives him the chance to re-enter the Fitzmaurice orbit\, seeking revenge and acceptance. He can’t help but notice that Ben’s wife\, Serena\, seems to have discovered in middle age that her privileged existence is more like a gilded cage. Or that Ben and Serena’s daughter Cosima has become an environmental activist fighting against everything her parents seem to stand for–a pivot her late aunt would’ve applauded. Where does Richard Take–Ben’s disgraced colleague\, determined to make his big comeback\, fit in? And circling them all is Andrew Jarvis and his money: Has he been their loyal hero\, or the one who has thrown his weight around just to keep them all in check? \nDelivering incisive commentary on the hypocrisies of the elite\, this juicy ensemble drama about old friends and dazzling wealth perfectly captures the uneasy balance between personal ambition and collective responsibility. One of Us is a page-turner with teeth\, a mash-up of The Wedding People and Succession–darkly comic and cutting\, as well as unexpectedly hopeful.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Steven C. Bowie discusses & signs Concerto for Cootie: The Life and Times of Cootie Williams
DESCRIPTION:Jazz legend Cootie Williams left home to start his career as a professional musician at the age of fifteen. In 1940\, after eleven years as one of the major soloists with the Duke Ellington orchestra\, Williams was lured away to the band of Benny Goodman\, one of the most popular bands in the country. At the time\, it was a controversial move–it was still taboo for African Americans to share the bandstand with white people. Current references to the move usually reduce it to a song written by Raymond Scott\, “When Cootie Left the Duke.” In reality\, it was a seismic event. The Black press predicted Black bands would collapse from raids on their ranks. White musicians were afraid they would be put out of work. And the white press stirred up visions of Black musicians mixing with white women in the new landscape of integrated orchestras. \nThe twenty years trumpeter Williams spent as a band leader (1942-1962) have been covered in only the barest of details. His involvement in politics and the civil rights movement have not been detailed before. An astute talent scout\, Williams and his band launched the careers of Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson\, Earl “Bud” Powell\, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis\, and Pearl Bailey. He also was the first to record the music of a young Thelonious Monk\, using two of Monk’s compositions (“Epistrophy” and “‘Round Midnight”) as theme songs for his band. \nSteven C. Bowie respectfully tells Williams’s story\, from his Alabama ancestry onward\, including many new details rediscovered from the historical archives of the African American press and those gleaned from the author’s interviews with his friends and colleagues.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Dr. Melisa Moore discusses & signs The Good Sleep Guide for Neurodivergent Kids: Science-Backed Strategies for Children and Teens with Adhd\, Autism\, and Other Neurodiversities
DESCRIPTION:A compassionate\, science-backed guide to improving sleep in children and teens with neurodiversities — written by a renowned pediatric sleep expert who is also the parent of a neurodivergent child. \nWhen Dr. Melisa Moore realized her son had autism and ADHD\, she already had a decade of experience helping families navigate sleep issues\, but nothing had prepared her for the reality of managing sleep in her own household. The advice she had learned felt too rigid\, unrealistic\, or simply ineffective for kids like hers. What she needed was a different kind of guide — so she set out to create one. \nWith humor\, validation\, and true empathy\, Moore offers a multifaceted framework that blends evidence-based science with real-life parenting wisdom. She breaks down the myths of sleep training\, redefines “healthy sleep” for neurodiverse families\, and provides a toolkit for finding what works — for your child\, in your life\, right now\, even if it doesn’t look the way anyone told you it should. As Moore shows\, consistently better sleep is possible\, and The Good Sleep Guide for Neurodivergent Kids will get your family there.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: TICKETED - Dr. Deepika Chopra\, in conversation with Mindy Kaling\, discusses and signs The Power of Real Optimism: A Practical\, Science-Based Guide to Staying Resilient\, Curious\, and Open Even When Life Is Hard
DESCRIPTION:Optimism isn’t about pretending everything is fine. It’s about staying open and flexible–especially when it’s not. In this fresh\, science-backed debut\, professional psychologist and media expert Dr. Deepika Chopra shows us how to build the kind of optimism that can actually withstand real life. \nWe’ve been sold the idea that optimism is a mood\, a mindset\, or worse–just an inherent trait. But what if real optimism is something else entirely? \nIn The Power of Real Optimism\, Dr. Deepika Chopra–known as The Optimism Doctor(R)–offers a radically different definition: optimism as a science\, a skill\, and a psychological muscle we can strengthen. Drawing from over a decade immersed in the science of resilience\, emotional well-being\, and cognitive psychology–as well as her work with clients\, innovative workshops\, and hallmark practices (think: evidence-based visualization\, narrative reframing\, her signature “self-worth work\,” and even color therapy)–Dr. Chopra offers a toolkit for navigating the chaos\, uncertainty\, and nuance of being human–without losing yourself to it. \nGrounded\, practical\, and poetic in all the right ways\, this book will challenge your relationship with hope\, rewire how you recover from hard things\, and invite you to stay soft without falling apart. With her blend of intimate storytelling\, psychological insight\, and tangible tools–including a 33-day Real Optimism Challenge–Dr. Chopra offers something far more enduring than a quick fix or fleeting affirmation. She invites us into a deeper\, more resilient way of living–one where we can stay curious in the face of fear\, open in the face of grief\, and grounded even as the world wobbles beneath us. \nBecause real optimism doesn’t deny the dark–it teaches us how to see in it.
