SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: TICKETED - Patti Callahan Henry\, in conversation with Julia Whelan\, discusses and signs The Story She Left Behind
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by a true literary mystery\, New York Times bestselling author of the mesmerizing The Secret Book of Flora Lea returns with the sweeping story of a legendary book\, a lost mother\, and a daughter’s search for them both. \nIn 1927\, eight-year-old Clara Harrington’s magical childhood shatters when her mother\, renowned author\, Bronwyn Newcastle Fordham\, disappears off the coast of South Carolina. Bronwyn stunned the world with a book written in an invented language that became a national sensation when she was just twelve years old. Her departure leaves behind not only a devoted husband and heartbroken daughter\, but also the hope of ever translating the sequel to her landmark work. As the headlines focus on the missing author\, Clara yearns for something far deeper and more insatiable: her beautiful mother. \nBy 1952\, Clara is an illustrator raising her own daughter\, Wynnie. When a stranger named Charlie Jameson contacts her from London claiming to have discovered a handwritten dictionary of her mother’s lost language. Clara is skeptical. Compelled by the tragedy of her mother’s vanishing\, she crosses the Atlantic with Wynnie only to arrive during one of London’s most deadly natural disasters—the Great Smog. With asthmatic Wynnie in peril\, they escape the city with Charlie and find refuge in the Jameson’s family retreat nestled in the Lake District. It is there that Clara must find the courage to uncover the truth about her mother and the story she left behind. \nTold in Patti Callahan Henry’s lyrical\, enchanting prose\, The Story She Left Behind is a captivating novel of mystery and family legacy that captures the profound longing for a mother and the evergreen allure of secrets. \nAbout the author\nPatti Callahan Henry is the New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of several novels\, including Surviving Savannah and Becoming Mrs. Lewis. She is the recipient of the Christy Award\, the Harper Lee Award for Alabama’s Distinguished Writer of the Year Award\, and the Alabama Library Association Book of the Year. She is the cohost and cocreator of the popular weekly online live web show and podcast Friends and Fiction. She lives in Alabama and South Carolina with her family. Find out more at PattiCallahanHenry.com. \n  \nThis is a ticketed in-store event. Tickets include one seat/entry and one copy of The Story She Left Behind which will be handed out at check-in.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Alwyn Hamilton\, in conversation with Victoria Aveyard\, discusses The Notorious Virtues
DESCRIPTION:Please note: an RSVP does not guarantee seating if we reach capacity. Please plan on arriving early. A purchase of the book from Vroman’s is greatly appreciated and makes events like this possible. \n\nImage\n \n\nBestselling Rebel of the Sands author Alwyn Hamilton is back with a glittering fantasy thriller about a glamorous media darling\, a surprise heiress\, and the magical competition of a lifetime. \nThis gorgeous hardcover first edition features emerald-hued edges\, creating a lush look for this stunning fantasy. \nAt sixteen\, Honora “Nora” Holtzfall is the daughter of the most powerful heiress in all of Walstad. Her family controls all the money–and all the magic–in the entire country. But despite being the center of attention\, Nora has always felt like an outsider. When her mother is found dead in an alley\, the family throne and fortune are suddenly up for grabs\, and Nora will be pitted against her cousins in the Veritaz\, the ultimate magical competition for power that determines the one family heir. \nBut there’s a surprise contestant this time: Lotte\, the illegitimate daughter of Nora’s aunt. When Lotte’s absent mother retrieves her from the rural convent where she’d abandoned her\, Lotte goes from being an orphan to being surrounded by family. Unfortunately\, most of them want her dead. \nAnd soon\, Nora discovers that her mother’s death wasn’t random–it was murder. The only person she can trust to uncover the truth of what happened is a rakish young reporter who despises everything Nora and her family stand for. \nWhile the dangers of the Veritaz competition threaten each of the Holtzfall girls\, and the stark class differences turn political outrage to terrifying violence–the new cousins must fight to stay alive\, no matter what. \nIncredible tests\, impossible choices\, and deadly odds await both girls. But there can only be one winner.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Stephen Witt discusses & signs The Thinking Machine: Jensen Huang\, Nvidia\, and the World's Most Coveted Microchip
DESCRIPTION:A purchase of the book from Vroman’s is greatly appreciated and makes events like this possible. \n“Stephen Witt’s deep reporting shines through every page of The Thinking Machine. The result is a page-turning biography of perhaps the most consequential CEO and company in the world.” –David Epstein\, New York Times bestselling author of Range \nNvidia is as valuable as Apple and Microsoft. It has shaped the world as we know it. But its story is little known. This is the definitive story of the greatest technology company of our times. \nIn June of 2024\, thirty-one years after its founding in a Denny’s restaurant\, Nvidia became the most valuable corporation on Earth. The Thinking Machine is the astonishing story of how a designer of video game equipment conquered the market for AI hardware\, and in the process re-invented the computer. \nEssential to Nvidia’s meteoric success is its visionary CEO Jensen Huang\, who more than a decade ago\, on the basis of a few promising scientific results\, bet his entire company on AI. Through unprecedented access to Huang\, his friends\, his investors\, and his employees\, Witt documents for the first time the company’s epic rise and its single-minded and ferocious leader\, now one of Silicon Valley’s most influential figures. \nThe Thinking Machine is the story of how Nvidia evolved to supplying hundred-million-dollar supercomputers. It is the story of a determined entrepreneur who defied Wall Street to push his radical vision for computing\, becoming one of the wealthiest men alive. It is the story of a revolution in computer architecture\, and the small group of renegade engineers who made it happen. And it’s the story of our awesome and terrifying AI future\, which Huang has billed as the ‘next industrial revolution\, ‘ as a new kind of microchip unlocks hyper-realistic avatars\, autonomous robots\, self-driving cars\, and new movies\, art\, and books\, generated on command. \nThis is the story of the company that is inventing the future.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Jennifer E. Smith discusses Fun For the Whole Family
DESCRIPTION:A breathtaking\, joy-filled novel about the people we love\, the secrets we keep\, and the enduring power of family\, from the bestselling author of The Unsinkable Greta James. \n“A glorious novel of love in all its forms–familial\, romantic\, lost\, and found. Jennifer E. Smith is a ray of literary sunshine.”–Jenny Jackson\, author of Pineapple Street\nThe four Endicott siblings–Gemma\, Connor\, Roddy\, and Jude–were once inseparable\, a bond created by the absence of their dazzling\, mercurial mother\, who would return for a few weeks each summer to whisk them off on sprawling road trips around the country.\nDecades later\, the unthinkable has happened: the Endicotts haven’t spoken in years . . . until an out-of-the-blue text arrives from Jude\, now a famous actress\, summoning them to a small town in North Dakota. They’re each at a crossroads: Gemma\, who put her own ambitions aside to raise the others\, now isn’t sure if she wants to be a mother herself; Connor\, a celebrated novelist\, is floundering after his recent divorce and suffering from an epic case of writer’s block; and Roddy\, at the tail end of a professional soccer career\, is dangerously close to losing his future husband for the chance at one last season.\nJude is the only Endicott who seems to have it all together–but appearances can be deceiving. As the weekend unfolds\, and the siblings wrestle with their shared past and uncertain futures\, they’ll discover that Jude has been keeping three secrets . . . each of which could change everything.\nA captivating journey and an ode to forgiveness that takes readers across all fifty states\, Fun for the Whole Family brims with heart and resonates long after the final page.

All the farm animals would celebrate Easter in their own special way. \nFeaturing playful rhymes and adorable art\, little ones can see how creatures\, great and small\, celebrate Easter. Families will giggle along as they imagine the critters that inhabit places near and far. A wonderful gift for baby showers\, birthdays\, new parents\, or any occasion! \nDon’t miss the other books in this adorable series: If Animals Kissed Good Night\, If Animals Said I Love You\, If Animals Celebrated Christmas\, If Animals Went to School\, If Animals Gave Thanks\, If Animals Tried to Be Kind\, If Animals Trick-or-Treated\, and If Animals Went to Work.ree

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Anna-Marie McLemore discusses & signs The Influencers
DESCRIPTION:A social media influencer’s empire is burned to the ground–literally. The top suspects? The five daughters who made her famous. \n“A witty and razor-sharp whodunit that will leave you both satisfied and challenged . . . A gorgeous\, gloriously scathing story.”–Ashley Herring Blake\, author of Iris Kelly Doesn’t Date \nWhat do you really know about the people you’ve made famous? \n“Mother May I” Iverson has spent the past twenty-five years building a massively successful influencer empire with endearing videos featuring her five mixed-race daughters. But the girls are all grown up now\, and the ramifications of having their entire childhoods commodified start to spill over into public view\, especially in light of the pivotal question: Who killed May’s newlywed husband and then torched her mansion to cover it up? \nApril is a businesswoman feuding with her mother over intellectual property; twins June and July are influencers themselves\, threatening to overtake May’s spotlight; January is a theater tech who steers clear of her mother and the limelight; and the youngest . . . well\, March has somehow completely disappeared. As the days pass post-murder\, everyone has an opinion–the sisters\, May\, a mysterious “friend of the family\,” and the collective voice of the online audience watching the family’s every move–with suspicion flying every direction. \nA campy and escapist exploration of race\, gender\, sexuality\, and class\, The Influencers is an evisceration of influencer culture and how alienating traditional expectations can be\, ripe for the current moment when the first generation of children made famous by their parents are\, now\, all grown up–and looking for retribution.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: 19 William Archila reads from & signs his poetry collection S is For\, with special guests Michelle Bitting\, Amaud Jamaul Johnson & Luis J. Rodriguez\, moderated by Douglas Manuel
DESCRIPTION:S is For is an investigation by poet William Archila of the Central American migrant crisis haunted by the past of the civil war in El Salvador\, the meanings of family spirits\, and trees disappearing to urban sprawl–always wielding the voice of the immigrant\, the refugee\, and the ever-present exile as a weapon against invisibility and displacement. Inventive and compassionate\, Archila’s poems navigate the meanings of family spirits\, weeds and wildflowers\, and the irreverence to lay down roots with our dead. The collection expresses the importance of an inner voice from the perspective of exile–people with no country\, no language\, ghosts split between present and past\, between home and foreign. In a variety of forms–quasi-sonnet\, sestina\, ekphrastic\, syllabic\, lyric\, memorial–the poems create a bridge between flaws and fractures\, between the northern region of Central America and the beloved north which is the US. S is for: every letter never uttered\, but evoked.

SUMMARY:Pasadena Heritage: Ian Whitcomb
DESCRIPTION:Janet Klien and bassist Marquis Howell\, of the inimitable “Janet Klein and Her Parlor Boys\,” along with Ian’s widow\, Regina Whitcomb\, will review the life and music of Altadena’s own Ian Whitcomb on the anniversary of his passing. An alumnus of the British Invasion\, with his 1965 song You Turn Me On reaching #8 on the Billboard Top 100\, Ian and his ukelele inspired others like Tiny Tim. He won a 1998 Grammy for his Titanic: Music Heard on The Fateful Voyage. After invading America\, Ian spent most of his life in Altadena as the grand master of folk accordion\, ukulele\, Ragtime\, and other important early American styles. He served as Grand Marshal of the Doo-Dah Parade in 1999\, was a regular “Parlor Boy\,” and hosted the Ian Whitcomb show on internet radio until his passing in April 2020 from complications of a stroke. His wife\, Regina\, lost their home and Ian’s archive in the Eaton Fire this past month. We thought it was a great time to celebrate the life and work of this music preservationist and Pasadena/Altadena treasure! Expect to hear great Early Americana music while learning more about Ian’s life and work.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: NEW DATE! - Gayle Forman\, in conversation with Lauren Oliver\, discusses & signs After Life
DESCRIPTION:One spring afternoon after school\, Amber arrives home on her bike. It’s just another perfectly normal day. But when Amber’s mom sees her\, she screams. \nBecause Amber died seven years ago\, hit by a car while on the very same bicycle she’s inexplicably riding now. \nThis return doesn’t only impact Amber. Her sister\, Melissa\, now seven years older\, must be a new kind of sibling to Amber. Amber’s estranged parents are battling over her. And the changes ripple farther and farther out: Amber’s friends\, boyfriend\, and even people she met only once have been deeply affected by her life and death. In the midst of everyone’s turmoil\, Amber is struggling with herself. What kind of person was she? How and why was she given this second chance? \nThis magnificent tour de force by acclaimed author Gayle Forman brilliantly explores the porous veil between life and death\, examines the impact that one person can have on the world\, and celebrates life in all its beautiful complexity.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Bridget Morrissey discusses Anywhere You Go
DESCRIPTION:A small-town waitress and a big-city Broadway press agent swap homes to escape the messiness of their personal lives\, only to find new purpose–and new love. \nTatum Ward and Eleanor Chapman lead totally opposite lives. Tatum’s never left her Midwestern hometown. She resides in a quaint guest cottage on her parents’ property while working part-time as a waitress\, where she spends most shifts ignoring her feelings for a beautiful regular named June. Eleanor dedicates every waking hour to her high-profile press career\, sacrificing personal relationships for professional success\, save for the occasional hookup to fight off her loneliness. When both women’s lives unexpectedly blow up at the exact same time\, they each need an escape\, and fast. \nIn Tatum’s hometown\, Eleanor expects a quiet hideaway where she can recharge. Instead she gets wrapped up in the family drama that Tatum left town to avoid\, pulled in by Tatum’s charismatic older sibling\, Carson\, who charms Eleanor at every turn. Tatum ends up in Eleanor’s New York high-rise apartment with June. One week together in the big city might make it impossible for Tatum to avoid not just her true feelings for June\, but her real dreams for her life. \nAmid a friendship with a reclusive Hollywood actress and a complicated family reunion\, Tatum and Eleanor each discover much more than they bargained for away from home. Their house swap won’t last forever\, but it might be just long enough for both women to surrender their defenses and finally fight for the life–and love–they deserve.
