SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: James Charles Darnborough discusses The Gambler’s Game
DESCRIPTION:In the twilight of the 19th century\, as the Old West collides with the opulence of the Gilded Age\, one man embarks on a journey that will redefine his life. The Gambler’s Game is a captivating historical fiction saga that follows the extraordinary life of a mid-western baseball player turned high-stakes gambler. His audacious spirit leads him from the dust chocked plains to the refined ambiance of English garden parties and the allure of Belle Epoque Monte Carlo. \nThis romantic and fast-paced tale will transport you to a time when anything was possible\, where dreams were chased\, and risks were taken. \nThis is a story of self-discovery in a rapidly changing world. The Gambler’s Game lures readers into a realm where the echoes of gunshots meet the clinking of champagne glasses\, and the magnificent network of railways and steamships takes the reader on grand adventures. \nBill ultimately finds himself torn between his love of gambling and a woman who might make him give it all up.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Shaina Steinberg discusses Under the Paper Moon
DESCRIPTION:It’s 1942\, and as far as her father knows\, Evelyn Bishop\, heiress to an aeronautics fortune\, is working as a translator in London. In truth\, Evelyn–daring\, beautiful\, and as adept with a rifle as she is in five languages–has joined the Office of Strategic Services as a spy. Her goal is personal: to find her brother\, who is being held as a POW in a Nazi labor camp. Through one high-risk mission after another she is paired with the reckless and rebellious Nick Gallagher\, growing ever close to him until the war’s end brings with it an act of deep betrayal. \nSix years later\, Evelyn is back home in Los Angeles\, working as a private investigator. The war was supposed to change everything\, yet Evelyn\, contemplating marriage to her childhood sweetheart\, feels stifled by convention. Then the suspected cheating husband she’s tailing is murdered\, and suddenly Evelyn is back in Nick’s orbit again. \nTeaming up for a final mission\, Evelyn and Nick begin to uncover the true nature of her case– and realize that the war has followed them home. For beyond the public horrors waged by nations there are countless secret\, desperate acts that still reverberate on both continents\, and threaten everything Evelyn holds dear.

SUMMARY:SCCM: Connections Exhibits and Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Connections is a public project produced for the Southern California Children’s Museum by the nonprofit Drawing Together in collaboration with four artists: Karen Godfrey and Mary Duman from Wrightwood and Amy Bauer and Emily Gallagher from Los Angeles. The exhibit and workshops aim to explore our connection to each other and the planet and address social isolation. Research has found that nearby nature can help us feel connected by offering socially isolated people an alternative way of feeling connected and overcoming the effect of low social connectedness. \nJoin Southern California Children’s Museum for several workshops and an exhibit that brings nature\, imagination\, and connection for little ones together! This project is made possible by an Impact Grant from the California Arts Council\, a state granting agency. \nWorkshop: April 27th at 11:30 – Interconnected Wonders \nThe Interconnected Wonders workshop offers cooperative activities to experience a felt sense of our place in the larger web of life on Earth. Children will be invited to connect through a community connection action and imaginative play dress-up activity. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nKaren Godfrey: As a mixed media artist\, I am richly inspired and intrigued by the raw wild beauty inherent in the immense and minute wonders of Life itself. I am informed by the vast sensuality of the rhythmic seasons and cycle of Nature: The Spiral Dance of Birth\, Life\, Death\, and Rebirth. \nAmy Bauer: A lifelong maker\, Amy Bauer is an artist\, designer\, educator\, creator of Fun-A-Day-LA\, and Creative Corps Grantee 23-24. Amy explores environmental themes and ties them into an investigation of the likenesses and frictions between her urban life and her folk art aesthetic. \nEmily Gallagher: Emily Gallagher is a soprano and community-based artist living in Los Angeles. She has performed in the United States and Europe and works to unite communities through the arts through programming that is accessible and engaging for a diverse audience. \nMary Duman: Mary Duman is an experienced ceramics instructor and artist for over 30 years\, who currently serves as a resident artist at Cobb Mountain Art and Ecology. Drawing inspiration from nature\, ancient Celtic symbols\, and the Wheel of the Year\, her sculptures act as portals to ancestral wisdom.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: TICKETED - Vroman’s presents Alua Arthur discusses Briefly Perfectly Human
DESCRIPTION:For her clients and everyone who has been inspired by her humanity\, Alua Arthur is a friend at the end of the world. As our country’s leading death doula\, she’s spreading a transformative message: thinking about your death–whether imminent or not–will breathe wild\, new potential into your life. \nWarm\, generous\, and funny AF\, Alua supports and helps manage end-of-life care on many levels. The business matters\, medical directives\, memorial planning; but also honoring the quiet moments\, when monitors are beeping and loved ones have stepped out to get some air–or maybe not shown up at all–and her clients become deeply contemplative and want to talk. Aching\, unfinished business often emerges. Alua has been present for thousands of these sacred moments–when regrets\, fears\, secret joys\, hidden affairs\, and dim realities are finally said aloud. When this happens\, Alua focuses her attention at the pulsing center of her clients’ anguish and creates space for them\, and sometimes their loved ones\, to find peace. \nThis has had a profound effect on Alua\, who was already no stranger to death’s periphery. Her family fled a murderous coup d’état in Ghana in the 1980s. She has suffered major\, debilitating depressions. And her dear friend and brother-in-law died of lymphoma. Advocating for him in his final months is what led Alua to her life’s calling. She knows firsthand the power of bearing witness and telling the truth about life’s painful complexities\, because they do not disappear when you look the other way. They wait for you. \nBriefly Perfectly Human is a life-changing\, soul-gathering debut\, by a writer whose empathy\, tenderness\, and wisdom shimmers on the page. Alua Arthur combines intimate storytelling with a passionate appeal for loving\, courageous end-of-life care–what she calls “death embrace.” Hers is a powerful testament to getting in touch with something deeper in our lives\, by embracing the fact of our own mortality. “Hold that truth in your mind\,” Alua says\, “and wondrous things will begin to grow around it.” (Mariner Books) \nTembi Locke is a New York Times bestselling author\, TV producer\, actor\, and screenwriter with a passion for connecting with her audience both on the page and on the screen. In partnership with Hello Sunshine\, Tembi served as co-creator and executive producer for the adaptation of her memoir\, “From Scratch: A Memoir of Love\, Sicily\, and Finding Home\,” for Netflix. The series\, “From Scratch\,” became an instant global hit\, spending weeks on Netflix’s Top Ten List in over thirty countries around the world and earning six NAACP Image Award nominations and the prestigious Los Angeles Film Italy award. Her aforementioned memoir was also a Reese’s Book Club pick and an instant bestseller. Tembi and her sister\, Attica\, are currently under an overall development deal with Universal Television \nIn addition to her accomplishments as a writer and producer\, Tembi is an accomplished actor with over sixty film and television credits. She most recently held a recurring role on Netflix’s hit show\, “Never Have I Ever.” Offscreen\, she is a nationally recognized speaker\, delivering keynotes on resilience\, loss\, creativity and the power of storytelling. Her TEDx talk has been viewed by individuals and nonprofits around the world. She launched her podcast\, “Lifted\,” which features dynamic women sharing their stories of what and who have lifted their lives. Through her work Tembi aims to inspire people to embrace resilience\, love\, and the power of community. \nThis ticketed event will take place in the Forum at All Saints Church located at 132 N Euclid Ave\, Pasadena. \nTickets include one copy of Briefly Perfectly Human which will be handed out at check-in.\nA book signing will follow the discussion.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Holly Gramazio discusses The Husbands
DESCRIPTION:When Lauren returns home to her flat in London late one night\, she is greeted at the door by her husband\, Michael. There’s only one problem–she’s not married. She’s never seen this man before in her life. But according to her friends\, her much-improved decor\, and the photos on her phone\, they’ve been together for years. \nAs Lauren tries to puzzle out how she could be married to someone she can’t remember meeting\, Michael goes to the attic to change a lightbulb and abruptly disappears. In his place\, a new man emerges\, and a new\, slightly altered life re-forms around her. Realizing that her attic is creating an infinite supply of husbands\, Lauren confronts the question: If swapping lives is as easy as changing a lightbulb\, how do you know you’ve taken the right path? When do you stop trying to do better and start actually living?

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Christina Vo discusses My Vietnam\, Your Vietnam: A Father Flees. a Daughter Returns. a Dual Memoir.
DESCRIPTION:In this captivating\, heartfelt dual memoir\, Christina Vo and her father\, Nghia M. Vo\, delve into themes of their identity\, heritage\, and the tragic multi-generational ordeals of war\, with intertwined stories that present a multifaceted portrayal of Vietnam and its profound influence on shaping both familial bonds and individual identities across time. \nNghia M. Vo left Vietnam in April 1975 with only the clothes on his back\, following the US withdrawal of troops and the fall of Saigon. After a harrowing two-month journey\, he found himself in a refugee camp outside Harrisburg\, Pennsylvania where he began the painful process of reconnecting with his family and rebuilding his life as a medical doctor. Christina Vo\, Nghia’s daughter\, grew up in the US. As a restless young adult\, she felt a longing to connect with her heritage and soon moved to Hanoi in former North Vietnam–much to her father’s distress–to discover a country that had changed dramatically since the war\, yet retained many of the ancient traits experienced by her ancestors. \nCaptivating in its fluid movement and evocative depictions of place\, My Vietnam\, Your Vietnam offers readers a rich\, multilayered exploration of Vietnam through two very distinct voices and perspectives. The memoir’s exploration of healing the trauma suffered by war refugees and their families echoes far beyond the personal experience of the two authors\, providing a path to discussion of reconciliation and hope.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Joanne Leedom-Ackerman and Adam Sikes present their latest releases\, The Far Side of the Desert and The Underhanded
DESCRIPTION:The Far Side of the Desert: A terrorist attack–a Kidnapping–the ultimate vacation gone Wrong \nSisters Samantha and Monte Waters are vacationing together in Santiago de Compostela\, Spain\, enjoying a festival and planning to meet with their brother\, Cal–but the idyllic plans are short-lived. When terrorists’ attacks rock the city around them\, Monte\, a U.S. foreign service officer\, and Samantha\, an international television correspondent\, are separated\, and one of them is whisked away in the frenzy. \nThe family mobilizes\, using all their contacts to try to find their missing sister\, but to no avail. She has vanished. As time presses on\, the outlook darkens. Can she be found\, or is she a lost cause? And\, even if she returns\, will the damage to her and those around her be irreparable? \nMoving from Spain to Washington to Morocco to Gibraltar to the Sahara Desert\, The Far Side of the Desert is a family drama and political thriller that explores links of terrorism\, crime\, and financial manipulation\, revealing the grace that ultimately foils destruction. (Oceanview Publishing) \n  \nThe Underhanded: Europe’s last line of defense against neofascism–a history professor? \nProfessor William Dresden has found solitude in the south of France to grapple with his troubled past–a neglected upbringing failed romances\, the recent demolition of his life’s work in academia\, and even witnessing genocide\, among other secrets. But he soon learns that he has much larger problems when an adrift MI6 officer\, Adeline Parker\, calls and insists on a meeting\, revealing shocking information about his family. Then a bomb explodes. \nWilliam and Adeline narrowly escape the attempt on their lives and find themselves battling a group of neofascists and extreme nationalists who are inciting violent divisions across Europe. They are pulled into a shadowy war against a cabal called the Strasbourg Executive and pushed to the brink by family betrayals\, corrupt institutions\, and the Executive’s subversive plots against the fabric of Western society.\nTo survive\, William must make tough decisions and act in ways he could’ve never previously imagined–but even that might not be enough.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Wendy Chen\, in conversation with Alexandra Chang\, discusses Their Divine Fires
DESCRIPTION:In 1917\, at the dawn of the Chinese Revolution\, Yunhong grew up in the southern China countryside and fell deeply in love with the son of a wealthy landlord despite her brother’s objections. On the night of her wedding\, her brother destroys the marriage before it has even lasted a day and irrevocably changes the shape of Yunhong’s family; her daughter Yuexin will never know her father. Haunted by a history that she will never fully understand\, Yuexin passes those memories onto her daughters Hongxing and Yonghong\, who come of age in the years following Mao’s death\, battling the push and pull of political forces as they forge their own paths. Each generation guards its secrets\, leaving Emily\, great-granddaughter of Yunhong and living in contemporary America\, to piece together what actually happened between her mother\, her sister\, and the weight of their shared ancestry. \nDrawing on the lives of her great-grandmother and her great-uncles–both of whom fought on the side of the Communists–as well as her mother’s experiences during the Cultural Revolution\, Wendy Chen infuses Their Divine Fires with a passion that will transport the reader back to powerful moments in history while bringing us close to the women who persisted despite the forces all around them. Both brilliant and haunting\, it’s a story about what our ancestors will\, and won’t\, tell us.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: TICKETED - Ali Velshi\, in conversation with Reza Aslan\, discusses Small Acts of Courage
DESCRIPTION:A captivating family history that illustrates how small actions can have an outsized political impact. \nSmall acts of courage matter. Sometimes\, they change the world. Our history books are filled with the stories of those who fought for democracy and freedom–for idealism itself–against all odds\, from Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela to Rev. Martin Luther King\, Jr. These iconic struggles for social change illustrate the importance of engagement and activism\, and offer a template for the battles we are fighting today. But using the right words is often easier than taking action; action can be hard\, and costly. \nMore than a century ago\, MSNBC host Ali Velshi’s great-grandfather sent his seven-year-old son to live at Tolstoy Farm\, Gandhi’s ashram in South Africa. This difficult decision would change the trajectory of his family history forever. From childhood\, Velshi’s grandfather was imbued with an ethos of public service and social justice\, and a belief in absolute equality among all people–ideals that his children carried forward as they escaped apartheid\, emigrating to Kenya and ultimately Canada and the United States. \nIn Small Acts of Courage\, Velshi taps into 125 years of family history to advocate for social justice as a living\, breathing experience–a way of life more than an ideology. With rich detail and vivid prose\, he relates the stories of regular people who made a lasting commitment to fight for change\, even when success seemed impossible. This heartfelt exploration of how we can breathe new life into the principles of pluralistic democracy is an urgent call to action–for progress to be possible\, we must all do whatever we can to make a difference. (St. Martin’s Press) \nREZA ASLAN is a renowned writer\, commentator\, professor\, Emmy- and Peabody-nominated producer\, and scholar of religions. A recipient of the prestigious James Joyce award\, Aslan is the author of three internationally best-selling books\, including the #1 New York Times Bestseller\, Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth. His producing credits include the acclaimed HBO series The Leftovers and the hit CBS comedy United States of Al. He is the host and Executive Producer of CNN’s Believer and Rough Draft with Reza Aslan\, as well as co-host along with Rainn Wilson of the podcast Metaphysical Milkshake.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Tom Hoffarth discusses Perfect Eloquence: An Appreciation of Vin Scully
DESCRIPTION:When Vin Scully passed away in 2022\, the city of Los Angeles lost its soundtrack. If you were able to deliver a eulogy for him\, what might it be? What impact did he have on you? What do you carry forward from his legacy? Sixty-seven essayists-one representing each season of his career calling games for the Los Angeles Dodgers\, from 1950 through 2016-reflect on the ways his professional and private life influenced them. The contributions include a range of stories and remembrances from those who knew and followed him. The consensus of the contributions is that Scully’s actions spoke louder than his well-recognized words. This collection includes fellow broadcasters as well as historians\, players\, journalists\, celebrities\, and others connected to the game of baseball\, with each piece introduced by sports journalist Tom Hoffarth. Readers can consider Scully’s life through common themes: his sincerity\, his humility\, his professionalism\, his passion for his faith\, his devotion to his family\, his insistence on remembering and giving context to important moments in the history of not just the game but the world in general\, all wrapped up in a gift for weaving storytelling with accurate reporting\, fellowship with performance art\, humor\, and connection.

DESCRIPTION:On January 28\, 1986\, just seventy-three seconds into flight\, the space shuttle Challenger broke apart over the Atlantic Ocean\, killing all seven people on board. Millions of Americans witnessed the tragic deaths of the crew\, which included New Hampshire schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe. Like the assassination of JFK\, the Challenger disaster is a defining moment in twentieth-century history–one that forever changed the way America thought of itself and its optimistic view of the future. Yet the full story of what happened\, and why\, has never been told. \nBased on extensive archival research and meticulous\, original reporting\, Challenger: A True Story of Heroism and Disaster on the Edge of Space follows a handful of central protagonists–including each of the seven members of the doomed crew–through the years leading up to the accident\, and offers a detailed account of the tragedy itself and the investigation afterward. It’s a compelling tale of ambition and ingenuity undermined by political cynicism and cost-cutting in the interests of burnishing national prestige; of hubris and heroism; and of an investigation driven by leakers and whistleblowers determined to bring the truth to light. Throughout\, there are the ominous warning signs of a tragedy to come\, recognized but then ignored\, and later hidden from the public. \nHigginbotham reveals the history of the shuttle program and the lives of men and women whose stories have been overshadowed by the disaster\, as well as the designers\, engineers\, and test pilots who struggled against the odds to get the first shuttle into space. A masterful blend of riveting human drama and fascinating and absorbing science\, Challenger identifies a turning point in history–and brings to life an even more complex and astonishing story than we remember.
