We are evacuating\,” his brother texted within minutes of the blaze engulfing the hillside behind the home where he and his pregnant wife were living. “Really bad.” An attached photo showed a huge black plume rising from behind the house\, an umbrella of smoke towering over everything they owned. Atkins produced the first book illustrated entirely with photographs\, Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions (1843)\, using a revolutionary cameraless printing process that continues to captivate audiences today. \nWhat Participants Will Experience\nThe HistoryGuests will discover how Atkins used the cyanotype process—developed in 1842 by her family friend Sir John Herschel—to carefully document delicate botanical specimens such as ferns and algae. Her work beautifully bridged science\, art\, and early photography. \nThe ScienceThe workshop explores the chemistry behind the iconic “sun print.” Paper treated with iron salts reacts to ultraviolet light\, producing the rich Prussian blue tones that define cyanotypes. Through interviews with stock photography experts\, photographers\, models\, consumers\, and other stakeholders\, Simona Supekar explores the evolution of the industry by tracing the creation of a stock photo from concept to usage while highlighting significant historical moments. \nSupekar weaves in her own experiences as a keyworder for a stock photography company while reckoning with her Asian American/South Asian identity in a post-9/11 world. Stock Photo also addresses how these images have the power to shape our perceptions about race\, class/caste\, gender\, ability\, and more\, thus underscoring the importance of representation even in something as innocuous as a stock photo.
