DESCRIPTION:The Pasadena Department of Transportation\, Day One\, and Pasadena Complete Streets Coalition present its 6th annual Pasadena Walktober\, an annual event to get people walking in Pasadena. Whether you walk for physical health\, or mental health\, to meet people\, to see new things\, to admire our historic architecture\, or simply to get things done (maybe all of the above!)\, we recognize and celebrate walking! \nAs part of this year’s Walktober\, Pasadena Heritage will offer a free docent-guided tour of the historic Civic Center. Join us as we learn about fountains designed by Ernest Batchelder\, Myron Hunt\, and Ruth Shellhorn and the history of the buildings they were designed to complement. October’s tour will include a wide variety of water features\, from historic to contemporary\, designed by some of Pasadena’s best architects. \nTours last approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes and cover approximately 1.5 miles. Reservations are required.

SUMMARY:Pasadena Heritage: “Craftsman Architectural Sub-Styles” a Lecture and Presentation by John Ripley
DESCRIPTION:Craftsman residential architecture encompasses several major sub-styles\, ranging from the original Stickley version to the Swiss Chalet style and other variants. Being able to recognize the sub-styles can increase the pleasure of viewing the buildings and enhance restoration accuracy. Pasadena historian and author John Ripley will use current and historical images to illustrate the development and features of these different Craftsman versions. Homes shown will range from vernacular designs to those of sophisticated architects like Greene & Greene\, the Heineman brothers\, and Sylvanus Marston. DESCRIPTION:Join Council Member Jason Lyon\, on a twilight exploration of Pasadena’s Playhouse Village! Named for the Pasadena Playhouse\, a renowned live theater venue since 1925\, this area has been a cultural hub since the 1920s. It’s full of art installations\, murals\, and architecture representing a wide range of styles and time periods. \nOn this walking tour\, you’ll learn about one of Pasadena’s first Art Deco buildings\, the first parking structure in the city\, and Southern California’s largest and oldest independent bookstore. We’ll talk about how the arts helped shape this district from its beginnings up to the present day\, and how the village continues to support a vibrant\, dynamic group of local artists and entrepreneurs. \nWe’ll end our tour with “Pasadena Agua Fresca” featuring hibiscus and rose water that will be provided complimentary to all attendees\, courtesy of Anaya’s Restaurant. \nTotal walking distance will be approximately 1.5 miles. \nWe recommend wearing comfortable shoes and a light jacket (weather-dependent). \nPlease RSVP in advance so we have an idea of how many attendees to anticipate. \nThis event is a collaboration of Julia Long\, Council Member Jason Lyon\, and the Playhouse Village Association and is part of Walktober Pasadena 2023\, made possible by the City of Pasadena Department of Transportation.
