SUMMARY:Boston Court Pasadena: Nolan Shaheed
DESCRIPTION:Local Jazz legend Nolan Shaheed joins his brilliant trumpet stylings with his dedicated band of great musicians to share a program of hot Jazz on the Boston Court Pasadena stage for the first time. \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nNolan Shaheed has achieved his world class standing in two varied genres. He holds a world record in running and has musical talent that has taken him all over the world playing trumpet to back-up remarkable performers notably Marvin Gaye\, Stevie Wonder\, Diana Ross and Phil Collins. He has also performed and toured with: Eddie Harris\, Teddy Edwards\, Duke Ellington Orchestra\, Lionel Hampton Orchestra\, Jeannie & Jimmy Cheatham and Francisco Aquabea. Notwithstanding\, Shaheed is in demand as a studio musician and has recently released the album\, Lamentations From The Middle Passage. \nBorn in 1949\, this California native knew he had athletic talent at an early age. Before entering competitive track as a high school sophomore\, Shaheed enjoyed beating all-comers in around-the-block races. He was also involved in basketball\, baseball and football during his formative years as a member of the Pasadena Boys Club. During the time that Shaheed excelled as a high school track star\, he was also making a name for himself as an outstanding trumpeter. He was named to the All-City-Band and All-State-Band. Thankfully\, his passion for the trumpet was recognized by his mother\, who permitted him to relinquish the violin at age 12 and begin his remarkable dedication to the trumpet. He credits his musical shift to listening to recordings of Louie Armstrong\, the great jazz trumpeter. \nShaheed had the speed to qualify for the Olympic trials as a runner but did not pursue this path. He recognized there was not the money in track that his musical talent would garnish. Therefore\, running became an avocation and a supplement to his musical career. As he puts it\, “Running made my trumpet playing better\, which gave me an incentive to run.” While touring with phenomenal musicians\, Shaheed honed his running skills and built the conviction to become an Ageless/Timeless Athlete. “When I was on the road\, I always jogged ten miles. I did my best work writing music when on a nice long run\,” Shaheed stated.

SUMMARY:Boston Court Pasadena: Click\, Clack\, Moosic with Collective
DESCRIPTION:This delightful music programming for ages 3-7 is a live musical storytime event featuring the Click Clack Moo! book by Doreen Cronin set to original music by Helix Collective resident composer\, Phil Popham. Come meet musicians\, explore an instrument petting zoo\, and hear Click Clack Moo come to life! \nABOUT THE PROJECT \nAn educational concert featuring the Click Clack Moo! book set to original music by Helix Collective resident composer\, Phil Popham. This original musical work set to the popular book Click Clack Moo by Doreen Cronin was commissioned by the West Michigan Symphony. This popular concert for children (ages 3 – 7) has been performed by that symphony for ten years running with enormous success. \nHelix Collective will bring this delightful educational concert to children in the Pasadena area with a performance in the Spring of 2024. \nThis high-quality music programming for young children is a live musical-story time event. Children will meet musicians\, learn about basic music concepts\, interact with the narrator throughout the story and hear live music performed\, specifically written for the Click Clack Moosic program. \nThe program introduces one instrument from each instrument family (brass\, string\, piano\, percussion\, woodwind). Each character is represented by an instrument so the young audience can get to know each instrument through the character’s personality. Each character has a featured section to highlight what that instrument does best. This updated version of the classic programs like Peter and the Wolf covers more diverse styles of music including salza\, a ho down\, waltz\, and blues. \nThrough the story\, children learn about working together\, collective action\, and how one small voice can make a big difference. \n  \nPRE-CONCERT LEARNING PROGRAM \nOur primary goal with this first concert in the series is to engage young learners with an introduction to the instruments and learning about how music expresses emotion. The instrument petting zoo before the performance allows each child to see and touch instruments up close and interact with the musicians that make music through each instrument. \nAt the start of the program\, the narrator and conductor will lead the children through a series of exercises where they learn to recognize and name emotions through the tone of voice and word emphasis they hear. They then each get to try this themselves using their own voice. Then the program brings this concept to storytelling through music. \nWe will engage with young audiences in deep learning with the musical story. Young attendees will gain a firm understanding of the different instrument families and be able to recognize the nine instruments by ear. They will understand the role of the conductor and how different types of music express different moods and moments in the character’s journey. They will discover how music can be used to tell a story\, celebrate\, express emotions\, and bring people (or farm animals) together. \nABOUT THE KEY PROJECT PARTICIPANT  \nPhil Popham\, Music Director \nClick Clack Moosic Music Director Phil Popham is a co-founder of Helix Collective. He composed the music for and conducted the world premieres of his Click\, Clack\, Moosic children’s concerts with the West Michigan Symphony Orchestra. The four programs (Click Clack Moosic\, Giggle Giggle Quack\, Dooby Dooby Moo\, and Click\, Clack\, Ho! Ho! Ho!) include his original music accompanying the narration of the stories. \nHe has conducted the Los Angeles Live Score Film Festival for 8 years and has conducted the scores for over 30 films. Dr. Popham holds graduate degrees in both Composition and Performance with studies in Music Industry and Production Music from the University of Southern California and the Peabody Conservatory of Music. \nSarah Robinson\, Co-founder\, Administrator\, and Flutist \nSarah Robinson is the flutist and co-founder of Helix Collective. She is the author of Clubbing for Classical Musicians\, a guide to presenting music in alternative venues which has been called “enlightening\, instructional\, and inspiring.” As a flutist she has recorded scores for television\, video games\, commercials\, and several albums. She holds degrees in flute performance from the Royal Northern College of Music (UK)\, the University of Illinois\, the University of South Carolina\, and the Chicago College of Performing Arts. SUMMARY:Boston Court Pasadena: WANDER/WONDER Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:Wander/Wonder features the work of two Los Angeles-based artists: Jeanne Dunn and Sonja Schenk. Both artists depict natural elements in their works that speak volumes about the wondrous and terrifying interconnectedness of humanity and our environment. \nIn paintings by Jeanne Dunn\, the subject is monumental\, awe-inspiring trees and forests. Both large-scale paintings are from her Tangle Tree Painting series\, in which the artist writes “I use a paintbrush like a dowser uses a divining rod.” Using a lustrous color palette\, her works create portals through which we can experience our natural environment e. Dunn’s trees feel like unique individuals who form connections with one another similar to human relationships. These connections are rendered in the way each trunk or branch bends towards one another and in the reaching out of their roots. \nAlthough the work of Sonja Schenk similarly represents the artist’s intense engagement with the environment around her\, these particular bodies of work investigate man-made structures unique to Los Angeles. Schenk’s inspiration for the suspended sculpture titled The End was imagining what kind of ruins would remain in the West once humanity is no longer on Earth. The paintings on view from the New Mountain series are at once serenely beautiful and unnerving–– the saturated hues of the skies hinting at the intense smog in the Southern California air. \nIn presenting the works of Jeanne Dunn and Sonja Schenk\, Wander/Wonder inspires a deeper connection with the world around us\, acknowledges the journey we’re all on together\, and reminds us to be gentle with one another and with the Earth.
