SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Storytime featuring Mauricio Abril presenting Programmed to Paint
DESCRIPTION:Join Pintro the robot’s journey as he learns how to create art! \nPintro is a robot who is practically perfect. He knows all there is to know about how to garden\, how to bake\, and especially everything about math. But the one thing Pintro does not know how to do? Make art! Whenever he tries\, he just produces a perfect copy of the subject. While that’s not a bad thing\, he knows there’s more to art than that. Can Pintro connect with his creativity and overcome his programming so he can finally paint the way he wants to?

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Eilish Quin discusses Medea
DESCRIPTION:Among the women of Greek mythology\, the witch Medea may be the most despised. Known for the brutal act of killing her own children to exact vengeance on her deceitful husband\, the Argonauts leader Jason\, Medea has carved out a singularly infamous niche in our histories. \nBut what if that isn’t the full story? \nThe daughter of a sea nymph and the granddaughter of a Titan\, Medea is a paradox. She is at once rendered compelling by virtue of the divinity that flows through her bloodline and made powerless by the fact of her being a woman. As a child\, she intuitively submerges herself in witchcraft and sorcery\, but soon finds it may not be a match for the prophecies that hang over her entire family like a shroud. \nAs Medea comes into her own as a woman and a witch\, she also faces the arrival of the hero Jason\, preordained by the gods to be not only her husband\, but also her lifeline to escape her isolated existence. Medea travels the treacherous seas with the Argonauts\, battles demons she had never conceived of\, and falls in love with the man who may ultimately be her downfall. \nIn this propulsive\, beautifully written debut\, readers will finally hear Medea’s side of the story through a fresh and feminist lens.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Naomi Hirahara\, discusses Village in the Dark
DESCRIPTION:On a frigid February day\, Anchorage Detective Cara Kennedy stands by the graves of her husband and son\, watching as their caskets are raised from the earth. It feels sacrilegious\, but she has no choice. Aaron and Dylan disappeared on a hike a year ago\, their bones eventually found and buried. But shocking clues have emerged that foul play was involved\, potentially connecting them to a string of other deaths and disappearances. \nSomehow tied to the mystery is Mia Upash\, who grew up in an isolated village called Unity\, a community of women and children in hiding from abusive men. Mia never imagined the trouble she would find herself in when she left home to live in Man’s World. Although she remains haunted by the tragedy of what happened to the man and the boy in the woods\, she has her own reasons for keeping quiet. \nAided by police officer Joe Barkowski and other residents of Point Mettier\, Cara’s investigation will lead them on a dangerous path that puts their lives and the lives of everyone around them in mortal jeopardy.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Frank C. Girardot discusses Becoming Clark Rockefeller
DESCRIPTION:BECOMING CLARK ROCKEFELLER: Murder\, Love\, Deception\, and the Con Man Behind It All delves into the life of a young immigrant entangled in a multi-generational murder investigation ensnaring some of the wealthiest Americans. Posing as bogus aristocrat Clark Rockefeller\, he duped the affluent\, leaving a trail of deception and national headlines in his wake. \nYet the story would grow even more sinister. In 1985\, Linda Sohus\, a talented\, outgoing artist\, and her husband John\, a computer geek with dreams of space\, mysteriously vanished from their quiet San Marino\, California life. But why? Were they on a secret government mission\, chasing elusive dreams\, or had something terrible happened to them? The police investigated while the public and media speculated. But all leads came to a dead end\, and eventually\, the mystery faded into the shadows. \nThen\, in 1994\, a shocking backyard discovery reignited the case. Bones were unearthed\, revealing a convoluted tale of murder\, lust\, and trickery. At its center\, the same audacious grifter\, whose real name was Christian Gerhartsreiter\, who had conned his way into high society as Clark Rockefeller. \nIn this thrilling true crime masterpiece\, tenacious investigative journalist and bestselling author Frank C. Girardot unveils this transcontinental\, decades-long mystery with interviews from witnesses\, court documents\, and exclusive insights from the con man himself.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Kemper Donovan discusses The Busy Body
DESCRIPTION:“I tell other people’s stories for a living. . . . I nip and tuck their excesses\, soften their hard edges\, polish whatever an armada of editors and publicists deem unsightly till it sparkles.” \nIt’s a dream assignment. Former Senator Dorothy Gibson\, aka that woman\, is the most talked-about person in the country right now\, though largely for the wrong reasons. As an independent candidate for President of the United States\, Dorothy split the vote and is being blamed for the shocking result. After her very public defeat\, she’s retreated to her home in rural Maine\, inviting her ghostwriter to join her. \nHer collaborator is impressed by Dorothy’s work ethic and steel-trap mind\, not to mention the stunning surroundings (and one particularly gorgeous bodyguard). But when a neighbor dies under suspicious circumstances\, Dorothy is determined to find the killer in their midst. And when Dorothy Gibson asks if you want to team up for a top secret\, possibly dangerous murder investigation\, the only answer is: “Of course!” \nThe best ghostwriters are adept at asking questions and spinning stories . . . two talents\, it turns out\, that also comes in handy for sleuths. Dorothy’s political career\, meanwhile\, has made her an expert at recognizing lies and double-dealing. Working together\, the two women are soon untangling motives and whittling down suspects\, to the exasperation of local police. But this investigation–much like the election–may not unfold the way anyone expects.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Graham Zimmerman\, in conversation with Abbey Smith\, discusses A Fine Line
DESCRIPTION:How do we reconcile our love of outdoor adventure with the inevitability of loss in high-risk sports? Still in his thirties\, Graham Zimmerman has made first ascents from Alaska to Pakistan\, and in 2020 he received the Piolet d’Or for his climb on Pakistan’s Link Sar with Steve Swenson. A sponsored athlete who is sought out as a climbing partner\, Zimmerman knows that he must find a balance between his ambitions as an alpinist and his social responsibilities–as a husband\, climate advocate\, and community leader. \nHis generation has faced devastating grief in the mountains\, including the deaths of Kyle Dempster\, Hayden Kennedy\, and Inge Perkins\, and his cohort has witnessed firsthand the effects of climate change in the form of disappearing glaciers and increasingly erratic weather. Zimmerman writes of the exhilaration he feels while climbing but also the painful realization that summiting at all costs is an outdated model. As A Fine Line traces Graham’s journey\, mountain lovers everywhere will see themselves in this coming-of-age story of adventure and personal reckoning. \n

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Becky Nicolaides\, in conversation with Naomi Hirahara\, The New Suburbia
DESCRIPTION:America’s suburbs have been transforming. The conventional story of suburbs as bastions of white\, middle-class homeowners no longer describes the suburbs of America’s cities. Today they house a more typical cross-section of the nation–rich\, poor\, Black American\, Latino\, Asian\, immigrant\, the unhoused\, the lavishly housed\, and everyone in between. Stories of everyday suburban life\, in the process\, have taken on new inflections. \nNowhere are these changes more vivid than in Los Angeles. In this suburban metropolis and global powerhouse\, lily white suburbs have virtually disappeared\, and over two-thirds of the County’s suburbs have become majority minority. Examining this vanguard of change from the postwar to the present\, The New Suburbia follows the Asian Americans\, Black Americans\, and Latinos who moved into white neighborhoods that once barred them. They bought homes\, enrolled their children in schools\, and began navigating suburban life. They faced a choice: would they remake the suburbs\, or would the suburbs remake them? In places like Pasadena\, San Marino\, South Gate\, and Lakewood\, suburbanites faced the challenges of living together in difference. Historian Becky Nicolaides explores a range of community experiences\, from internal resegregation to suburban poverty\, an embrace of law-and-order culture to police brutality\, friendly neighbors to social withdrawal. In some communities\, diverse residents continued longstanding habits of exclusion and perpetuated metropolitan inequality. In others\, they embraced more inclusive\, multicultural suburban ideals. Through it all\, the common denominators of suburbia remained–low-slung landscapes of single-family homes and families seeking the good life. \nAn authoritative work based on a half-century of quantitative data and unpublished oral histories and interviews\, The New Suburbia explores vital landscapes where the American dream has endured\, even as the dreamers have changed.

SUMMARY:Vroman's: Sherri L. Smith and Elizabeth Wein discuss American Wings
DESCRIPTION:From the acclaimed author of Flygirl and the bestselling author of Code Name Verity comes the thrilling and inspiring true story of the desegregation of the skies. \nIn the years between World War I and World War II\, aviation fever was everywhere\, including among Black Americans. But what hope did a Black person have of learning to fly in a country constricted by prejudice and Jim Crow laws\, where some previous Black aviators like Bessie \nColeman had to move to France to earn their wings? \nAmerican Wings follows a group of determined Black Americans: Cornelius Coffey and Johnny Robinson\, skilled auto mechanics; Janet Harmon Bragg\, a nurse; and Willa Brown\, a teacher and social worker. Together\, they created a flying club and built their own airfield on Chicago’s South Side. As the U.S. hurtled toward World War II\, they established a school to train new pilots\, teaching both Black and white students together and proving\, in a time when the U.S. military was still segregated\, that successful integration was possible. \nComplete with black-and-white photographs throughout\, American Wings brings to light a hidden history of pioneering Black men and women who\, with grit and resilience\, battled powerful odds for an equal share of the sky. (G.P. Putnam’s Sons for Young Readers) \nSherri L. Smith is the author of several novels for young adults\, including the critically acclaimed The Blossom and the Firefly\, Flygirl\, Orleans\, and Pasadena\, as well as the middle-grade novel The Toymaker’s Apprentice. SUMMARY:Vroman's: Mark Eaton discusses Historical Fiction Now
DESCRIPTION:Historical Fiction Now brings together prominent authors\, scholars\, and critics of historical fiction to explore the genre’s character\, fortunes\, and potential in the twenty-first century. \nGathering together the voices of novelists\, critics\, academics\, and several authors writing across these categories\, the volume explores the nature of reading\, writing\, and writing about historical fiction in the present moment while meditating on some of the myriad contexts of the genre. \nWhat inspires writers to choose particular moments\, events\, and personalities as the subjects of their fictional imaginings\, and with what implications for their readers’ understanding of the present? How do contemporary scholars approach the making and reception of historical fiction\, and how do these approaches resonate with writers’ own preoccupations in the process of invention? What might scholars of a genre with a long and complex history learn from its contemporary practitioners? Conversely\, how do novelists understand their own historical fictions (if at all) in relation to the theoretical and critical traditions shaping the work of their academic colleagues? SUMMARY:Vroman's: Nikki Vargas\, in conversation with Jeremy Tarr\, discusses Call You When I Land
DESCRIPTION:At twenty-six years old\, life looked a certain way for Nikki Vargas. She’d settled in New York City ready to join the ranks of the Carrie Bradshaw’s of the world\, had landed in a promising advertising career\, and was newly engaged to her college sweetheart. But between corporate happy hours and wedding dress fittings\, she couldn’t shake a deep underlying sense of imposter syndrome\, a voice telling her that she was rocketing towards a future that didn’t look like her. Initially created as a women’s lifestyle blog\, Not So Private Parts has evolved into a resource removing the shame and stigma surrounding women’s issues. Sellerz-Jackson is the co-founder of Moms in Color\, a Black mom collective centered around celebrating diversity in the motherhood space. She is also the senior manager of social media for Ergobaby\, a leading brand in babywearing and attachment parenting. She has been featured in USA Today\, Essence\, and MOTHER\, among other outlets. Sellerz-Jackson lives in Pasadena\, CA with her husband\, Jon; their three boys\, Jax\, Jedi\, and Jupiter; and their labradoodle\, Chaka. \n*Mariel Buqué\, PhD\, is a Columbia University–trained trauma-informed psychologist\, professor\, and sound bath meditation healer. She has appeared as an expert on Good Morning America and Today and in Allure\, Self\, Glamour\, and Well + Good\, among many other outlets\, and has offered wellness talks to corporations such as Google\, Capital One\, and Meta. She is originally from the Dominican Republic and currently lives in New Jersey. Break the Cycle is her first book. \n*Born and raised in foggy Northern California and now residing in Los Angeles CA with her spouse John\, Arielle Estoria (R-E-L EH-STORY-UH) (she/her) is a Published and commissioned Poet\, Author and Actor and Model. Her motto\, “Words not for the ears but for the soul” stems from her dedication to remind anyone who encounters her work that words are meant to be felt and experienced not just heard. With a specific heart in empowering\, encouraging and making space for audiences of women to feel free and at home in their own bodies.\nArielle is the Co-Author of two self-published collections of poetry: Vagabonds and Zealots (2014)\, and Write Bloody Spill Pretty (2017) which can both be found on Amazon.com and in 2016\, released her EP of poetry and music titled Symphony of a Lioness. In March 2023\, Estoria released her first solo book of poetry titled\, THE UNFOLDING an invitation to come home to yourself\, with Harper One available wherever books\, e-books and audiobooks are available. \nThree ticket options are available:\nAll tickets will include one entry and one book\, depending on the title you choose.\nOptions include Brandi Sellerz-Jackson’s forthcoming title\, On Thriving\, Break The Cycle by Dr. Mariel Buqué and The Unfolding by Arielle Estoria. \nON THRIVING by Brandi Sellerz-Jackson\nA renowned doula shares powerful lessons on healing and thriving through the murky seasons of life in this moving\, intimate guide to deeper self-awareness and radical joy.\nWe’ve all been there: We take a pause\, look at our lives\, and desire more—more from our relationships\, more from our wellness journeys\, maybe simply more from ourselves. For some\, it might be more fun\, more peace\, more exploration—but what does it take to get to the other side of living in survival mode? In On Thriving\, Brandi Sellerz-Jackson helps us wade through what she calls the four great labors of our lives—labors that she’s had to overcome and that she has led many clients through.\nDrawing from her experiences as a doula and intimate storytelling from her own life\, Sellerz-Jackson guides us through the many phases of these great labors—labors that we can get stuck in\, stunting our ability to thrive. Across age\, gender\, economic status\, or background\, we all move through the great labor of our relationships\, our mental health\, grief and loss\, and the feeling of being othered. Sellerz-Jackson doesn’t shy away from the pitfalls of these labors but rather challenges us to actively remain present within them and ask ourselves: What do I need to thrive in the space I’m currently in? In On Thriving\,you’ll come to recognize the survival tools you’ve picked up along the way and exchange them for thriving tools and “rich-uals.” You’ll commit to no longer making a home out of chaos and rediscovering sanctuary within yourself.\nComparing our thriving to that of plant life\, Sellerz-Jackson simplifies the complicated—and oftentimes overwhelming—journey as we attempt to grow in an inhospitable environment. With insightful and vulnerable storytelling\, she invites a deep\, soul-stirring investigation of our past and present to gather all that we need to thrive right where we are\, right now. \nBREAK THE CYCLE by Dr. Mariel Buqué\nThe definitive\, paradigm shifting guide to healing intergenerational trauma—weaving together scientific research with practical exercises and stories from the therapy room—from Dr. Mariel Buqué\, Ph.D\, a Columbia University-trained\, trauma-informed\, psychologist\, professor\, and practitioner of holistic healing.\nWhen a physical wound is left unhealed\, it continues to cause pain and can infect the whole body. When emotions are left unhealed\, they similarly cause harm that spreads to other parts of our lives\, hurting our family\, friends\, coworkers\, and others. Eventually\, this hurt can injure an entire community\, metastasizing across years and generations. This is intergenerational trauma. This trauma is why some of us become estranged from our families\, why some of us are people pleasers\, and why some of us find ourselves in co-dependent relationships. This trauma can be rooted in the experiences of ancestors\, who may have suffered due to their race or identity\, and it can be collective\, the result of a shared experience like systemic oppression\, harmful engrained behaviors in a culture like the acceptance of physical discipline of children\, or even a natural disaster like a pandemic. These wounds are complex\, impacting our minds\, bodies\, and spirits. Healing requires a holistic approach that has so far been absent from the field of psychology. Until now.\nFrom Dr. Mariel Buqué\, a leading trauma psychologist\, comes a groundbreaking guide to transforming intergenerational pain into intergenerational abundance. With BREAK THE CYCLE\, she delivers the definitive guide to healing inherited trauma. Weaving together scientific research with practical exercises and stories from the therapy room\, Dr. Buqué teaches readers how trauma is transmitted from one generation to the next and how they can break the cycle through tangible therapeutic practices\, learning to pass down strength instead of pain to future generations. \nTHE UNFOLDING by Arielle Estoria\n“A moving\, fresh\, unique poetry collection and a generous invitation into the mind of the poet. Both a galvanizing wake-up call and a tender lullaby.” — Glennon Doyle\, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Untamed\n“What I love about Arielle’s writing is that she takes readers on this journey step by step\, filled with wisdom and grace. This book will help anyone seeking to unfold into their bloom.” — Morgan Harper Nichols\, author of All Along You Were Blooming and Peace is a Practice\nIn this beautiful collection of poems\, essays\, and meditations\, Arielle Estoria tenderly reveals the places in her life where she has been broken open and mended back together in new ways. In doing so\, she shows each of us how when we walk through our own process of “unfolding\,” though it may be uncomfortable at times\, there is light on the other side. Let these words guide your soul\, and return home to the person you were always meant to be. \nThis ticketed event will take place at All Saints Church located at 132 N Euclid Ave\, Pasadena. \nBooks that come with the ticket will be handed out at check-in and will be pre-signed so a book signing will NOT follow the conversation. Additional copies of all titles\, will be available for purchase at the event.
