SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Marjan Kamali discusses The Lion Women of Tehran
DESCRIPTION:In 1950s Tehran\, seven-year-old Ellie lives in grand comfort until the untimely death of her father\, forcing Ellie and her mother to move to a tiny home downtown. Lonely and bearing the brunt of her mother’s endless grievances\, Ellie dreams of a friend to alleviate her isolation. \nLuckily\, on the first day of school\, she meets Homa\, a kind\, passionate girl with a brave and irrepressible spirit. Together\, the two girls play games\, learn to cook in the stone kitchen of Homa’s warm home\, wander through the colorful stalls of the Grand Bazaar\, and share their ambitions for becoming “lion women.” \nBut their happiness is disrupted when Ellie and her mother are afforded the opportunity to return to their previous bourgeois life. Now a popular student at the best girls’ high school in Iran\, Ellie’s memories of Homa begin to fade. Years later\, however\, her sudden reappearance in Ellie’s privileged world alters the course of both of their lives. \nTogether\, the two young women come of age and pursue their own goals for meaningful futures. But as the political turmoil in Iran builds to a breaking point\, one earth-shattering betrayal will have enormous consequences.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: K.X. Song discusses The Night Ends with Fire
DESCRIPTION:The Three Kingdoms are at war\, but Meilin’s father refuses to answer the imperial draft. Trapped by his opium addiction\, he plans to sell Meilin for her dowry. But when Meilin discovers her husband-to-be is another violent\, ill-tempered man\, she realizes that nothing will change for her unless she takes matters into her own hands. \nThe very next day\, she disguises herself as a boy and enlists in her father’s place. \nIn the army\, Meilin’s relentless hard work brings her recognition\, friendship–and a growing closeness with Sky\, a prince turned training partner. But has she simply exchanged one prison for another? As her kingdom barrels toward destruction\, Meilin begins to have visions of a sea dragon spirit that offers her true power and freedom\, but with a deadly price. \nWith the future of the Three Kingdoms hanging in the balance\, Meilin will need to decide whom to trust–Sky\, who inspires her loyalty and love; the sea dragon spirit\, who has his own murky agenda; or an infuriating enemy prince who makes her question everything she once knew–about her kingdom and about her own heart.

SUMMARY:Vroman’s Bookstore: Yasmine Cheyenne discusses Wisdom of the Path: The Beautiful and Bumpy Ride to Healing and Trusting Our Inner Guide
DESCRIPTION:“When I decided to stop hiding in the shadows of what I’d been through and embrace the hills and rugged terrain of my life\, I saw who I really was and loved her.” –FROM THE EPILOGUE \nWe’re each walking our own journey\, and sometimes it’s a hard one: a divorce\, a career change\, grief\, or a major life transition. These chapters of our lives can leave us feeling lost and overwhelmed thinking\, “How did I end up here?” Most often\, the answers we tell ourselves make us feel either stuck on the path or stuck in shame. We are uncomfortable with the discomfort that life inevitably presents. \nBut another possibility is that we allow this question to spark curiosity that inspires and invites us to keep going\, step by step\, until we arrive on the other side of our journey. \nWisdom of the Path weaves stories of grief\, heartbreak\, joy\, and overcoming that invite you to gather the wisdom you’ve collected throughout your life and use it for your path ahead. Anchored in four guideposts: base camp\, intent\, walk the talk\, and lessons learned\, this soulful and warm storytelling guide encourages us to embrace the bumpy roads of our lives with knowledge and knowing that we’re moving forward.

SUMMARY:Vroman’s Bookstore: Lori Tucker Sullivan discusses I Can’t Remember if I Cried: Rock Widows on Life\, Love\, and Legacy
DESCRIPTION:The stories of rock musicians who die young are the thing of lore and legend. Accidents\, drug overdoses\, plane crashes–all have taken the lives of male rock stars still in their primes. But what became of their widowed brides? How did they survive a loss so great? What is it like to have to share your grief with millions of strangers? And where are these widows today? \nI Can’t Remember if I Cried is part music history\, part memoir\, based around interviews with rock widows conducted by Lori Tucker-Sullivan–who herself lost her husband in 2010. With each widow that Lori interviews\, she learns lessons in love\, forgiveness\, coping\, and moving on. The book is framed by the author’s own narrative to create a single thread that links the stories together to ultimately create a tale of how the author’s life is changed through her interactions with these amazing women.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Daniel Handler discusses And Then? and Then? What Else?
DESCRIPTION:Writing as Lemony Snicket\, Daniel Handler has led several generations of young readers into that special and curious space of being hopelessly lost\, and joyfully finding yourself\, in the essential strangeness of literature. The wondrous and perilous journey of the Baudelaire orphans sprung from the author’s own path\, from his childhood discovery of Baudelaire’s poetry through the countless peculiarities of his pursuit of a literary life–abject failure and startling success\, breakthrough and breakdown\, concordance and controversy–lit along the way by the books and culture he loved best. \nAt once a personal memoir and a literary exploration\, a how-to book and a critical inquiry\, a sequence of stories and a series of events\, And Then? And Then? What Else? is a book not just for anyone curious about the creator of Lemony Snicket\, but for anyone who loved books when they were a child\, and still loves them now.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Nicola Yoon discusses One of Our Kind
DESCRIPTION:Jasmyn and King Williams move their family to the planned Black utopia of Liberty\, California hoping to find a community of like-minded people\, a place where their growing family can thrive. King settles in at once\, embracing the Liberty ethos\, including the luxe wellness center at the top of the hill\, which proves to be the heart of the community. But Jasmyn struggles to find her place. She expected to find liberals and social justice activists striving for racial equality\, but Liberty residents seem more focused on booking spa treatments and ignoring the world’s troubles. \nJasmyn’s only friends in the community are equally perplexed and frustrated by most residents’ outlook. Then Jasmyn discovers a terrible secret about Liberty and its founders. Frustration turns to dread as their loved ones start embracing the Liberty way of life. \nWill the truth destroy her world in ways she never could have imagined? \nThrilling with insightful social commentary\, One of Our Kind explores the ways in which freedom is complicated by the presumptions we make about ourselves and each other.

SUMMARY:Vroman’s Bookstore: Jacqueline Winspear discusses The Comfort of Ghosts
DESCRIPTION:London\, 1945: Four adolescent orphans with a dark wartime history are squatting in a vacant Belgravia mansion–the owners having fled London under heavy Luftwaffe bombing. Psychologist and Investigator Maisie Dobbs visits the mansion on behalf of the owners and discovers that a demobilized soldier\, gravely ill and reeling from his experiences overseas\, has taken shelter with the group. \nMaisie’s quest to bring comfort to the youngsters and the ailing soldier brings to light a decades-old mystery concerning Maisie’s first husband\, James Compton\, who was killed while piloting an experimental fighter aircraft. As Maisie unravels the threads of her dead husband’s life\, she is forced to examine her own painful past and question beliefs she has always accepted as true.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Max Podemski discusses A Paradise of Small Houses
DESCRIPTION:The Philadelphia row house. The New York tenement. The Boston triple-decker. Every American city has its own iconic housing style\, structures that have been home to generations of families and are symbols of identity and pride. Max Podemski\, an urban planner for the city of Los Angeles and lifelong architecture buff\, has spent his career in and around these buildings. Deftly combining his years of experience with extensive research\, Podemski walks the reader through the history of our dwelling spaces–and offers a blueprint for how time-tested urban planning models can help us build the homes the United States so desperately needs. \nIn A Paradise of Small Houses\, Podemski charts how these dwellings have evolved over the centuries according to the geography\, climate\, population\, and culture of each city. He introduces the reader to styles like Chicago’s prefabricated workers cottages and LA’s car-friendly dingbats\, illuminating the human stories behind each city’s iconic housing type. Through it all\, Podemski interrogates the American values that have equated home ownership with success and led to the US housing crisis\, asking\, “How can we look to the past to build the homes\, neighborhoods\, and cities of the future that our communities deserve?

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Kevin Fedarko discusses A Walk in the Park
DESCRIPTION:A few years after quitting his job to follow an ill-advised dream of becoming a guide on the Colorado River\, Kevin Fedarko was approached by his best friend\, the National Geographic photographer Pete McBride\, with a vision as bold as it was harebrained. Together\, they would embark on an end-to-end traverse of the Grand Canyon\, a journey that\, McBride promised\, would be “a walk in the park.” Against his better judgment\, Fedarko agreed to the scheme\, unaware that the small cluster of experts who had completed the crossing billed it as “the toughest hike in the world.” \nThe ensuing ordeal\, which lasted more than a year\, revealed a place that was deeper\, richer\, and far more complex than anything the two men had imagined–and came within a hair’s breadth of killing them both. They struggled to make their way through the all but impenetrable reaches of its truest wilderness\, a vertical labyrinth of thousand-foot cliffs and crumbling ledges where water is measured out by the teaspoon and every step is fraught with peril–and where\, even today\, there is still no trail along the length of the country’s best-known and most iconic park. \nAlong the way\, veteran long-distance hikers ushered them into secret pockets\, invisible to the millions of tourists gathered on the rim\, where only a handful of humans have ever laid eyes. Members of the canyon’s eleven Native American tribes brought them face-to-face with layers of history that forced them to reconsider myths at the center of our national parks–and exposed them to the impinging threats of commercial tourism. Even Fedarko’s dying father\, who had first pointed him toward the canyon more than forty years earlier but had never set foot there himself\, opened him to a new way of seeing the landscape.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Adam Higginbotham discusses Challenger: A True Story of Heroism and Disaster on the Edge of Space
DESCRIPTION:On January 28\, 1986\, just seventy-three seconds into flight\, the space shuttle Challenger broke apart over the Atlantic Ocean\, killing all seven people on board. Millions of Americans witnessed the tragic deaths of the crew\, which included New Hampshire schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe. Like the assassination of JFK\, the Challenger disaster is a defining moment in twentieth-century history–one that forever changed the way America thought of itself and its optimistic view of the future. Yet the full story of what happened\, and why\, has never been told. \nBased on extensive archival research and meticulous\, original reporting\, Challenger: A True Story of Heroism and Disaster on the Edge of Space follows a handful of central protagonists–including each of the seven members of the doomed crew–through the years leading up to the accident\, and offers a detailed account of the tragedy itself and the investigation afterward. It’s a compelling tale of ambition and ingenuity undermined by political cynicism and cost-cutting in the interests of burnishing national prestige; of hubris and heroism; and of an investigation driven by leakers and whistleblowers determined to bring the truth to light. Throughout\, there are the ominous warning signs of a tragedy to come\, recognized but then ignored\, and later hidden from the public. \nHigginbotham reveals the history of the shuttle program and the lives of men and women whose stories have been overshadowed by the disaster\, as well as the designers\, engineers\, and test pilots who struggled against the odds to get the first shuttle into space. A masterful blend of riveting human drama and fascinating and absorbing science\, Challenger identifies a turning point in history–and brings to life an even more complex and astonishing story than we remember.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Tom Hoffarth discusses Perfect Eloquence: An Appreciation of Vin Scully
DESCRIPTION:When Vin Scully passed away in 2022\, the city of Los Angeles lost its soundtrack. If you were able to deliver a eulogy for him\, what might it be? What impact did he have on you? What do you carry forward from his legacy? Sixty-seven essayists-one representing each season of his career calling games for the Los Angeles Dodgers\, from 1950 through 2016-reflect on the ways his professional and private life influenced them. The contributions include a range of stories and remembrances from those who knew and followed him. The consensus of the contributions is that Scully’s actions spoke louder than his well-recognized words. This collection includes fellow broadcasters as well as historians\, players\, journalists\, celebrities\, and others connected to the game of baseball\, with each piece introduced by sports journalist Tom Hoffarth. Readers can consider Scully’s life through common themes: his sincerity\, his humility\, his professionalism\, his passion for his faith\, his devotion to his family\, his insistence on remembering and giving context to important moments in the history of not just the game but the world in general\, all wrapped up in a gift for weaving storytelling with accurate reporting\, fellowship with performance art\, humor\, and connection.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: TICKETED - Ali Velshi\, in conversation with Reza Aslan\, discusses Small Acts of Courage
DESCRIPTION:A captivating family history that illustrates how small actions can have an outsized political impact. \nSmall acts of courage matter. Sometimes\, they change the world. Our history books are filled with the stories of those who fought for democracy and freedom–for idealism itself–against all odds\, from Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela to Rev. Martin Luther King\, Jr. These iconic struggles for social change illustrate the importance of engagement and activism\, and offer a template for the battles we are fighting today. But using the right words is often easier than taking action; action can be hard\, and costly. \nMore than a century ago\, MSNBC host Ali Velshi’s great-grandfather sent his seven-year-old son to live at Tolstoy Farm\, Gandhi’s ashram in South Africa. This difficult decision would change the trajectory of his family history forever. From childhood\, Velshi’s grandfather was imbued with an ethos of public service and social justice\, and a belief in absolute equality among all people–ideals that his children carried forward as they escaped apartheid\, emigrating to Kenya and ultimately Canada and the United States. \nIn Small Acts of Courage\, Velshi taps into 125 years of family history to advocate for social justice as a living\, breathing experience–a way of life more than an ideology. With rich detail and vivid prose\, he relates the stories of regular people who made a lasting commitment to fight for change\, even when success seemed impossible. This heartfelt exploration of how we can breathe new life into the principles of pluralistic democracy is an urgent call to action–for progress to be possible\, we must all do whatever we can to make a difference. SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Wendy Chen\, in conversation with Alexandra Chang\, discusses Their Divine Fires
DESCRIPTION:In 1917\, at the dawn of the Chinese Revolution\, Yunhong grew up in the southern China countryside and fell deeply in love with the son of a wealthy landlord despite her brother’s objections. On the night of her wedding\, her brother destroys the marriage before it has even lasted a day and irrevocably changes the shape of Yunhong’s family; her daughter Yuexin will never know her father. Haunted by a history that she will never fully understand\, Yuexin passes those memories onto her daughters Hongxing and Yonghong\, who come of age in the years following Mao’s death\, battling the push and pull of political forces as they forge their own paths. Each generation guards its secrets\, leaving Emily\, great-granddaughter of Yunhong and living in contemporary America\, to piece together what actually happened between her mother\, her sister\, and the weight of their shared ancestry. \nDrawing on the lives of her great-grandmother and her great-uncles–both of whom fought on the side of the Communists–as well as her mother’s experiences during the Cultural Revolution\, Wendy Chen infuses Their Divine Fires with a passion that will transport the reader back to powerful moments in history while bringing us close to the women who persisted despite the forces all around them. Both brilliant and haunting\, it’s a story about what our ancestors will\, and won’t\, tell us.
