SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Nov 09 Allen Zadoff in conversation with Yehudi Mercado\, discusses The Donut Prince of New York
DESCRIPTION:Eugene Guterman’s junior year in high school is off to a rocky start.  No love life\, no new theater production\, and if his mother has her way\, no more of his favorite comfort food—donuts. Eugene would just as soon spend the year playing small\, but that’s hard to do when you’re the biggest kid in your class. \nThings change when he accidentally tackles the school’s star quarterback and Coach sees the possibilities and recruits the plus-size playwright onto the varsity football team. Eugene is suddenly catapulted into the world of the “The Pops\,” the exclusive clique of popular athletes known for their parties and dating scene. Best of all is the new and mysterious girl Daisy who seems to be noticing him. \nThen Eugene discovers that life at the top is more complicated than he imagined— there’s pressure to excel\, to fit in\, and to uphold a certain image—and Eugene misses his former life and his old friends. Can he find the courage to give it all up\, write something real\, and maybe\, just maybe\, be the big guy who actually gets the girl?

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Molly Ruttan\, in conversation with Stacy Lynn Carroll\, discusses The Yowlers
DESCRIPTION:A playful picture book about the transformative power of being nice \nThe Yowler family is always in a monstrously bad mood: Papa grumbles\, Mama yells\, Sara and Sonya bicker\, and the baby fusses day and night. They’re so used to being grumpy that when their new neighbors smile at them\, the Yowlers are puzzled and are immediately suspicious. And when the new kids ask Sara and Sonya to play? Well\, that’s just plain odd. Then again\, it does feel good to be treated kindly . . . and all of a sudden the sisters start acting nicer themselves\, causing Mama and Papa to wonder if they’re coming down with something. But as it turns out\, even the smallest acts of kindness can be powerful. The weather may have been stormy— but there is friendliness is in the forecast!

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Jesse Katz\, in conversation with Héctor Tobar\, discusses The Rent Collectors: Exploitation\, Murder\, and Redemption in Immigrant LA
DESCRIPTION:Baby-faced teen Giovanni Macedo is desperate to find belonging in one of LA’s most predatory gangs\, the Columbia Lil Cycos—so desperate that he agrees to kill an undocumented Mexican street vendor. The vendor\, Francisco Clemente\, had been refusing to give in to the gang’s shakedown demands. But Giovanni botches the hit\, accidentally killing a newborn instead. The overlords who rule the Lil Cycos from a Supermax prison 1\,000 miles away must be placated and Giovanni is lured across the border where\, in turn\, the gang botches his killing. And so\, incredibly\, Giovanni rises from the dead\, determined to both seek redemption for his unforgivable crime and take down the gang who drove him to do it. \n  \nWith The Rent Collectors\, Jesse Katz has built a teeth clenching and breathless narrative that explicates the difficult and proud lives of undocumented black market workers who are being extorted by the gangs and fined by the city of LA—in other words\, exploited by two sets of rent collectors.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Aaron Carnes\, in conversation with Dan Ozzi\, discusses In Defense of Ska: Expanded 2nd Edition
DESCRIPTION:With an additional 30\,000 words of compelling stories\, research\, and analysis\, music journalist and ‘In Defense of Ska’ podcast creator/host Aaron Carnes presents the case that ska never died\, by jumping headfirst into ska’s “lost years\,” i.e.\, the period after the ’90s third-wave ska boom. \nNew topics covered include LA’s ongoing vibrant traditional ska scene and how young Latinos are keeping the ska torch aflame\, how the devastation of Hurricane Katrina inadvertently kicked off a thriving scene focused on keeping community alive in New Orleans\, a deep review of Christian ska group Five Iron Frenzy\, who broke a Kickstarter record in the ’10s while making progressive activists out of their fan base\, a close inspection of a hipster rocksteady scene in Brooklyn that grew so popular it nearly kicked off a nationwide revival\, and more secret ska past revelations with none other than Fall Out Boy lead singer Patrick Stump—who has a story that\, up until recently\, was carefully guarded. \nPlus\, the book re-explores several bands featured in the first edition\, revealing new layers and more details about all the bands fans love\, like Mighty Mighty Bosstones\, Operation Ivy\, the Slackers\, Hepcat\, Mephiskapheles\, and Reel Big Fish. With 30\,000 additional words\, this is the complete ska package.

Bored\, Charlie wants magic\, adventure\, and even to slay a dragon When a rainbow suddenly appears\, Charlie steps outside to take a sensory journey through his neighborhood discovering the sights\, sounds\, and smell of nature. On his walk\, Charlie learns much more about the world around him than he would have just playing video games. \nAbout the Author:\nJulie Schnieders grew up in South Pasadena\, California\, where her family settled over 100 years ago. As a child\, her parents took her hiking in the local mountains and on vacation at the beach where she collected seashells by the dozens. Her early childhood memories fostered in her a love of nature\, exploration\, and of course\, a sweet tooth! \nJulie has written freelance stories for The Tidings\, Angelus News\, and Quarterly Magazine. She also taught elementary school\, which piqued her interest in children’s books. \nToday\, Julie calls Northwest Montana home where her adventure continues. The beauty of wildlife\, starry skies\, and the great outdoors inspire her to write stories about how nature cultivates the creativity and curiosity of children of all ages. \nJulie is a wife and mother of two grown children. SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: M.T. Anderson discusses Nicked
DESCRIPTION:From the award-winning and bestselling author of Feed comes a raucous and slyly funny adult fiction debut. Based on a bizarre but true quest to steal the mystical corpse of a long-dead saint\, Nicked is a fantastical\, genre-defying\, and delightfully queer historical romp. \nThe year is 1087\, and a pox is sweeping through the Italian city of Bari. When a lowly monk is visited by Saint Nicholas in his dreams\, he interprets the vision as a call to serve the sick. But his superiors\, and the power brokers they serve\, have different plans for the tender-hearted Brother Nicephorus. \nEnter Tyun\, a charismatic treasure hunter renowned for “liberating” holy relics from their tombs. Tyun says that the seven-hundred-year-old bones of Saint Nicholas are rumored to weep a mysterious liquid that can heal the sick. For the humble price of a small fortune\, he will steal the bones and deliver them to Bari\, curing the plague and restoring glory to the fallen city. And Nicephorus\, the “dreamer\,” will be his guide. \nWhat follows is a heist for the ages\, as Nicephorus is swept away on strange tides\, and alongside even stranger bedfellows\, to commit sacrilegious theft. Based on real historical accounts\, Nicked is a swashbuckling saga\, a medieval novel noir\, a meditation on the miraculous\, and a monastic meet-cute\, filled with wide-eyed wonder at the world that awaits beyond our own borders.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Elizabeth Ai\, in conversation with Oliver Wang\, discuss New Wave: Rebellion and Reinvention in the Vietnamese Diaspora
DESCRIPTION:Fifty years of the Vietnamese Diaspora as seen through the New Wave movement\, showing how young Vietnamese refugees in Orange County found rebellion and reinvention through music\, fashion\, and community. \nAs Vietnamese refugees sought safety in the United States in the wake of the fall of Saigon\, a generation of Vietnamese teenagers and young adults struggled to adjust to a new life in America. Many of these young people in Southern California found a new life and a new identity in New Wave music\, a type of Euro Disco that became enormously popular in this community. New Wave: Rebellion and Reinvention in the Vietnamese Diaspora celebrates the rebellion\, reinvention\, and rebirth of joy in this young generation in cultural limbo. Featuring essays from prominent Vietnamese scholars\, critics\, and stars\, New Wave explores how music\, fashion\, and rebellion can be a force for healing. New Wave is a love letter to the first generation of Vietnamese punks and rebels who came of age in the 1980s.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Special Storytime presents: Laura Obuobi discusses What Love Looks Like
DESCRIPTION:From Laura Obuobi\, author of Black Gold and NAACP Image Award nominee\, and illustrator Anna Cunha comes a whimsical bedtime story about the love between a Black father and his daughter. This tender tale with lush natural imagery and pure Black joy captures love’s vastness\, showing us its greatest form is often the one between parent and child. \nOne question must be answered before Afia can slip into a peaceful sleep: What does love look like? With the companionship of her loving papa\, Afia journeys to find love and learns that it is the warmth of the sun’s hugs\, the brook’s soothing song\, and other mesmerizing gifts of nature. But Afia’s quest also teaches her that she may not have to go too far to see the emotion at the heart of the world’s wonders.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: TICKETED - Jason Reynolds discusses Twenty-Four Seconds from Now…:A LOVE Story
DESCRIPTION:#1 New York Times bestselling author Jason Reynolds tackles it—you know…it—from the guy’s perspective in this unfiltered and undeniably sweet stream-of-consciousness story of a teen boy about to experience a huge first. \nTwenty-four months ago: Neon gets chased by a dog all around the parking lot of a church. Not his finest moment. And one he would have loved to forget if it weren’t for the dog’s owner: Aria. Dressed in sweats\, a t-shirt\, and hair in a ponytail. Aria. Way more than fine. \nTwenty-four weeks ago: Neon’s dad insists on talking to him about tenderness and intimacy. Neon and Aria are definitely in love\, and while they haven’t taken that next big step…yet\, they’ve started talking about…that. \nTwenty-four days ago: Neon’s mom finds her—gulp—bra in his room. Hey! No judging! Those hook thingies are complicated! So he’d figured he’d better practice\, what with the big day only a month away. \nTwenty-four minutes ago: Neon leaves his shift at work at his dad’s bingo hall\, making sure to bring some chicken tenders for Aria. They’re not candlelight and they definitely aren’t caviar\, but they are her favorite. \nAnd right this second? Neon is locked in Aria’s bathroom\, completely freaking out because twenty-four seconds from now he and Aria are about to…about to… Well\, they won’t do anything if he can’t get out of his own head (all the advice\, insecurities\, and what-ifs) and out of this bathroom! \nNote: the subject matter of this book contains PG-13 material and is not recommended for the youngest of readers. \n**All tickets include a signed copy of Twenty-Four Seconds From Now . . .: A LOVE Story as well as admittance to the meet and greet line for a photo with Jason!

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Kathleen Glasgow\, in conversation with Alexa Donne\, discuss The Glass Girl
DESCRIPTION:From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Girl in Pieces comes a raw\, heart-wrenching novel about a teenager facing down her struggles with alcohol–and the journey she must take to heal. \nEveryone in fifteen-year-old Bella’s life needs something from her. SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstor: Scott Dominic Carpenter\, in conversation with Joan Meyerson\, discuss Paris Lost and Found: A Memoir of Love
DESCRIPTION:Following his hilarious introduction to Paris in French Like Moi\, Midwesterner Scott Dominic Carpenter returns to the scene of the crime with more tales of intrigue. \nThis time\, though\, the story starts with sorrow as Carpenter’s wife struggles with dementia. Humor may be the best medicine\, but even the antics of a vandal in their building can’t cement the tiles of her memory for long. Before he expects it\, the author finds himself alone in a capital that is also blighted by the pandemic. \nIt’s against this backdrop that the city comes roaring back to life. From bizarre encounters on the Metro to comical clashes with authority figures\, and even a quixotic battle against a flock of migrant parrots\, Paris Lost and Found unveils sides of the great city that are as quirky as they are authentic. With his unique blend of wit\, insight\, and wistfulness\, Carpenter charts a path through his new labyrinth of solitude–only to emerge on the other side\, squinting into the bright light of hope and new beginnings.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Mike Madrid discusses The Latino Century: How America's Largest Minority Is Transforming Democracy
DESCRIPTION:An insightful investigation of how and why the two major political parties have failed to appeal to the Latino vote—the largest ethnic voting group in the country—and the impact it will have on American democracy and politics for decades to come. \nIn 2020\, Latinos became the second-largest ethnic voting group in the country. They make up the largest plurality of residents in the most populous states in the union\, as well as the fastest segment of the most important swing states in the US Electoral College. Fitting neither the stereotype of the aggrieved minority voter nor the traditional assimilating immigrant group\, Latinos are challenging both political parties’ notions of race\, religious beliefs\, economic success\, and the American dream. Given their exploding numbers—and their growing ability to determine the fate of local\, state\, and national elections—you’d think the two major political parties would understand Latino voters. After all\, their emergence on the national scene is not a new phenomenon. But they still don’t. \nRepublicans\, not because of their best efforts but rather despite them\, are just beginning to see a movement of Latinos toward the GOP. Democrats\, for the moment\, still win a commanding share of the Latino vote\, but that share is dwindling fast. Now\, in The Latino Century\, veteran political consultant Mike Madrid uses thirty years of research and campaign experience at some of the highest levels on both sides of the aisle to address what might be the most critical questions of our time: Will the rise of Latino voters continue to foment the hyper-partisan and explosive tribalism of our age or will they usher in a new pluralism that advances the arc of social progress? How and why are both political parties so uniquely unprepared for the coming wave of Latino votes? And what must each party do to win those votes? \nBy answering these questions\, The Latino Century explores the true meaning of America at a time of rapid cultural change\, the founding principles of self-government and individual responsibility\, and one man’s journey through a political party that has turned itself inside out.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: MG Lord\, discusses Swimming Pretty: The Untold Story of Women in Water
DESCRIPTION:A groundbreaking history of how women found synchronicity―and power―in water. \n“If you’re not strong enough to swim fast\, you’re probably not strong enough to swim ‘pretty\,’” said a young Esther Williams to theater impresario Billy Rose. Since the nineteenth century\, tensions between beauty and strength\, aesthetics and athleticism have both impeded and propelled the careers of female swimmers―none more so than synchronized swimmers\, for whom Williams is often considered godmother. \nIn this revelatory history\, Vicki Valosik traces a century of aquatic performance\, from vaudeville to the Olympic arena\, and brings to life the colorful cast of characters whose “pretty swimming” not only laid the groundwork for an altogether new sport but forever changed women’s relationships with water. Williams\, who became a Hollywood sensation for her splashy “aquamusicals\,” was just one in a long\, bedazzled line of swimmers who began their careers as athletes but found greater opportunity\, and often social acceptance\, in the world of show business. \nNow\, on the fortieth anniversary of synchronized swimming’s elevation to Olympic status\, Swimming Pretty honors its incredible history of grit\, glamor\, and sheer athleticism.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Elizabeth Acevedo\, in conversation with Yesika Salgado\, discuss Family Lore
DESCRIPTION:From National Book Award-winning author Elizabeth Acevedo comes the story of one Dominican American family told through the voices of its women \nFlor has a gift: she can predict\, to the day\, when someone will die. So when she decides she wants a living wake—a party to bring her family and community together to celebrate the long life she’s led—her sisters are surprised. Has Flor foreseen her own death\, or someone else’s? Does she have other motives? She refuses to tell her sisters\, Matilde\, Pastora\, and Camila. \nBut Flor isn’t the only person with secrets: her sisters are hiding things\, too. And the next generation\, cousins Ona and Yadi\, face tumult of their own. \nSpanning the three days prior to the wake\, Family Lore traces the lives of each of the Marte women\, weaving together past and present\, Santo Domingo and New York City. Told with Elizabeth Acevedo’s inimitable and incandescent voice\, this is an indelible portrait of sisters and cousins\, aunts and nieces—one family’s journey through their history\, helping them better navigate all that is to come.

SUMMARY:Vroman's Bookstore: Esinam Bediako\, in conversation with Jayne Allen\, discuss Blood on the Brain
DESCRIPTION:An impulsive\, madcap and newly concussed young woman comes of age as she navigates her Ghanaian American identity\, her relationships\, and the muddled landscape of history\, memory\, imagination\, and delusion. \nTwenty-four-year-old Akosua is easily knocked off her feet. When she falls and hits her head\, she’s too preoccupied with her latest dramas to fully absorb the shock. In three months\, she has broken up with her boyfriend Wisdom\, discovered that her deadbeat dad has moved back to the States from Ghana\, and dropped so many classes that she believes she’s the only history grad student in the history of grad students to be registered for just one partial-credit class.
